hood soldiers swept away in flooding in texas. three others were injured when the soldiers got caught during a training exercise. the search is on for four more soldiers missing. gabe gutierrez is in texas with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning. earlier this year this unit returned from a nine-month deployment. now military officials call this tragedy a heartbreaking accident. this morning a desperate search at ft. hood, five soldiers killed, four missing after a flash flood overturned a tactical vehicle like this one during a training exercise. >> they launched from owl creek and they were possibly floating toward white plains last seen in a military vehicle. >> reporter: three others were rescued, in stable condition, potentially released later today. this military community is grieving. the deputy commanding general speaking out.

>> this tragedy extends well beyond ft. hood and the outpouring of support from around the country is sincerely appreciated. >> reporter: ft. hood is vast t largest post in the country spanning more than 200,000 acres, the vehicle overturned in a wooded area in the northeast part of the installation. >> this is a remote area, it's difficult to see. as you know the weather conditions are not -- they are helping us out now but the water is flowing. >> reporter: most of texas is under a flash flood watch, the historic high waters swallowing anything in its path. >> get out! >> do not underestimate the power of water. >> reporter: in fort ben county neighborhoods ravaged. as we got on this helicopter we saw more storms in the distance. there is no place for the water

to go. it could be weeks before waters recede. neither people nor animals are spared. the devastation rippling across the lone star state. these are live pictures from a drone overhead richmond, texas, that area devastated there, more than 550 water rescues in the county alone over the past few days. here in ft. hood, the soldiers have yet to be identified. when asked why these soldiers may have been conducting this training in dangerous weather, the spokesman here says that they train in these conditions every day. >> that's gabe gutierrez. thank you. to al, waiting for you to say the worst is over, this is going to get better. >> i think 24 more hours, then things will start to recede. it's going to take days. and again, we saw that video in gabe's piece, some folks trying to drive through.

well, just a few facts. six inches of moving water 6 miles per hour will knock somebody over. then you're at the mercy of all of that wet weather. also, in your car, two feet of rushing water will float most vehicles including vans and pickup trucksment water four miles per hour can damage or destroy a home. the power of water is incredible. and do not underestimate it. you can see the rain coverage a little bit less today. we do have 24 million people under some sort of flood watch or flash flood warning. but it has spread into central and southern louisiana and still goes up into central oklahoma. rainfall amounts still from 1 to 2 inches of rain but locally we could see 4 to 7 inches in southeast texas, on into central louisiana, still guys, rainfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour through today, starts to taper off tomorrow.

and should be done by sunday. >> we'll check back in with you. >> let us turn to politics, violence out side of a donald trump rally in san jose, california, as donald trump and hillary clinton throw some of their sharpest attacks yet at each other. we've got it all covered. let's begin with kristen welker in los angeles. good morning. >> good morning to you. did hillary clinton finally crack the code for taking on donald trump? that's the big question this morning after clinton delivered a withering 35-minute speech arguing that electing trump would be a, quote, historic mistake. it was a passionate address, many democrats had been waiting to hear but was also aped at independents and moderate republicans, late thursday night trump fired back as protesters got violent outside of his rally. another trump rally, another wild protest. this time in san jose, trump supporters mobbed by protesters thursday, unpches were thrown.

one supporter pelted with eggs. while this group set a what the slogan make america great again on fire. police in riot gear eventually moving in to keep the peace. inside the venue, trump on the defensive, unleashing sharp attacks against hillary clinton. >> i watched hillary today, it was pathetic. it was pathetic. >> reporter: trying to turn the tables on clinton's blistering krit such of his foreign policy, by putting the focus back on familiar ground, her e-mails. >> she has to go to jail. that was a phony hit job. she's guilty as hell. >> after she delivered her most squathing rebuke of him yet. >> donald trump's ideas aren't just different, they are dangerously incoherent. >> speaking in san diego thursday clinton tried to capitalize on polls including one showing 12% of registered voters think trump has the right temperament to be president.

better way, maybe take the poverty agenda, to both campaigns say trump came closer tmt way he did it will not spare him sort of taking this on both sides. but you know, i think that the exasperation people like paul ryan feel there was a legitimate foreign policy critique of hillary clinton but our nominee didn't make it yesterday. >> lest we forget we have a democratic primary. we don't want to let you go to your wall. >> well, i mean it's going to be a big night because this is what you got in thing draic side. here is the key for hillary clinton. she's going to come into the night roughly 40 off of that magic number. the first state that closes, new jersey, 8:00 p.m. eastern, the number of delegates up for grabs. the way they do it on the democratic side unless hillary clinton lost this state by 80 points she'll cross that magic number, get her 40 delegates, she will be declared the presumptive nominee. keep that in mind presumptive. sanders people will say it's not over.

sarkar had loads of ammo and gear. a note led police to his home in st. paul, they discovered what is described as a kill list naming professor bill klug, ashley hasty, a woman he married, and his second professor. that professor told knbc he remembered sarkar. >> there were problems but it wasn't that unusual and we thought we were done with him. if you had asked me about this two days ago i would have said there is no issue here. the guy's gone. it was resolved and over. >> reporter: police now looking into a blog that appears posted by sarkar saying he had personal differences with professor klug and he cleverly stole all my code and gave it to another student. the chief charlie beck saying ucla has dismissed those claims. >> this was a making of his own imagination. >> reporter: ashley's uncle says the couple separate add few years ago and they knew sarkar as a nice quiet young man. the family in shock over the

last of ashley, a med student they used to call their little duky houser. bill's widow says her loss is indescribable. she was so much more than my soul mate. all those candles very moving tribute. a lot of students and staff here turning to the school motto for comfort, it means let there be light. grief counselors will be available around campus. back to you. >> thank you. new information this morning about two fighter jet crashes that happened about the same time on thursday, in separate incidents. dramatic cell phone video shows the fire ball after a blue angels jet crashed during practice for a weekend air show in tennessee. the pilot, captain jeff kuss, was killed in that crash. and in colorado, a member of the u.s. thunder birds crashed after

a fly-over, the air force graduation action where president obama gave the commencement address. that pilot, major alex turner, ejected safely. the president met with turner after the crash and thanked him for his service. good news now on a bizarre story that got a lot of attention, a 7-year-old boy who disappeared a week ago in northern japan has been found safe. the boy's parents had left him in a forest last saturday as punishment for misbehaving. he was found in a hut in a military training area. doctors say he was slightly dehydrated but was fine. the boy's father apologized for causing trouble as he put it and expressed appreciation to everybody involved in the search. boxing great mohammed ali is hospitalized in the phoenix area this morning, he'sing treated for a respiratory infection. family spokesman said thursday that the 74-year-old was in fair condition and a brief hospital

>> good morning. for six weeks, prince's death was a mystery. we now know what killed one of this country's greatest musicians. the same thing that killed so many icons before him, a drug overdose. >> reporter: today, many may wonder, is it possible live shows like this one, that prince loved so much, ultimately played a role in the 57-year-old's untimely death? priva privately, friends say the athletic performances and the high heels caused chronic hip problems, leading to an addiction to pain medication that was supposed to help. according to the medical examiner's report, the 5'3" musician weighed 112 pounds when he died. found dressed in black, unresponsive in an elevator at paisley park. the medical examiner says the pop icon accidentally overdosed on a powerful opioid. it is prescribed in hospitals

alert, warning of a spike in fentanyl overdoses and increase in sales. investigators will have the answer that question, how did prince get his hands on this dangerous drug in the first place? savannah? >> stephanie gosk, thank you. preparations are underway at the cincinnati zoo to reopen the gorilla exhibit after a 3-year-old boy fell into the goril gorilla's enclosure. the new barrier will be up by the time the exhibit reopens next week. morgan radford is in cincinnati with the latest. good morning. >> matt, good morning. prosecutors could decide as early as today whether or not to file criminal againcharges agai the boys' family. here at the cincinnati zoo, they're building a brand-new fence, hoping something like this never happens again. >> reporter: a mother's worth nightma nightmare. >> he's dragging my son. i can't watch this. >> reporter: her 3-year-old boy

slapped back and forth by harambe, a silverback gorilla, at the sincincinnati zoo. the zoo announced it would replace the barrier that will be six inches taller with wood beams and a knotted rope netting. similar to this one used for the cheetah and lion exhibits, and one that zookeepers across the country will say it'll be more difficult for kids to squeeze through. >> before, they had horizontal bars. now, a child would have to climb over a 42-inch barrier, which is significantly more of a challenge. >> reporter: it's relief for parents who say it's already difficult to keep kids safe. >> they can run quickly. having the extra protection will be really good. >> the zoo is going to update the gorilla enclosure. that's always a good thing for the gorillas. >> what about for your kids? >> for my kids, they're going to be safe. i'm going to be on top of them.

it's typically prescribed in hospitals. and typically administered in hospitals for extreme pain. usually for cancer patients. however, it can be found on the streets for sale illegally. this is, again, one of the most potent opioid painkillers in medicine. it is 50 times more powerful than heroin and morphine. it's crazy to think. >> he must have been in an extreme case of pain, to ever get to that level. >> yeah. >> so sad. the other thing that struck me in reading this was that he was 112 pounds. >> yeah, at the time of death. >> 5'3". >> mm-hmm. >> i mean, that's -- i just can't even fathom that. >> yes. >> he was a small-statured man, but still -- >> with something that powerful, how does it affect the body? >> and he self-administered,

according to the report, as well. the fact that this is a prescribable drug -- >> how did he get it? >> that's the question. that's what they're looking into. obviously, that's where the investigation shifts to, who is now responsible for giving him that prescription or giving him -- or enabling him, really, to have those drugs? police have questioned at least two doctors. a local physician was also treating him. a source familiar with the treatment says he never prescribed pope yo ed opioids. a close associate of prince called an addiction specialist, but he said he never treated the pop star, or according to his attorney. neither doctor is accused of wrongdoing. they now have a definitive way to look at the case and will be checking out that in more detail. i'm sure we'll find out soon enough. >> seems even sadder. >> it is. the irony is, you know, of course we all -- it harkens back to michael jackson, what he was

administered. >> they seem like drugs that, me, you, normal people, would never, ever be able to get our hands on. once you hit a level of celebrity, maybe, you get access to things other people wouldn't? >> the u.s. surgeon general tweeted out 41 people die every day of opioid addiction. thousands of people die every year. >> so it's out there. >> it's out there and available on the black market. >> sure. >> then you don't know what you're getting. this is a powerful enough opioid in its own, pure form, when it's prescribed, but you can imagine the black market. they mix it probably with all kinds of things. >> very scary. >> scary stuff. kind of a wild story out of florida. >> yeah. >> there's this guy who was fishing out north of tampa. he fell overboard. his boat floated off, and he's stuck in the water. >> without a life vest? >> without anything.

taking a look at the headlines. preparations are underway at the cincinnati zoo to reopen the gorilla exhibit. although with a new barrier, it's going up, replacing the 36-inch railing that a 3-year-old boy crawled through before tumbling 15 feet into the gorilla's enclosure. the incident led to the gorilla's fatal shooting. the exhibit was originally expected to reopen this weekend. that has been delayed until next tuesday. a small preliminary study shows promise using stem cells to treat long-term motor damage following a stroke. stanford researchers injected adult stem cells into the brains of 18 chronic stroke patients. they found the procedure was not only safe, it was also able to restore some motor function thought to be lost forever.

>> look at this. we're going to do shrimp kabobs. these are about as easy as they get because it cooks quickly. soy sauce, ginger and honey. if you're going to use wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minute sos ths so they don't or it retards the burning process. make the marinade. half is going to be for the marinade. the other half is going to be for basting. once you put this on the grill. you have your garlic, honey, soy sauce. mix that all up. then you're going to pour half of this into shrimp, on top. massage it in. spin it around. >> how long do you marinade? >> put it in the fridge for three, four hours. nothing too terrible. once you do that, you're going to take the skewers. thread your shrimp and put them on the grill. just like that. >> so good. >> let them sit for about three minutes -- two minutes on one
