because if it's sunday, it's "meet the press." it's monday, june 6th. coming up on early today, tributes continue to pour in on the death of boxer muhammad ali, as preparations get under way for his funeral. another primary win puts hillary clinton on the verge of clinching the democratic nomination. plus, major progress in a fast-moving massive wildfire in southern california. a historic win for novak djokovic. and a new miss usa is crowned. "early today" starts right now. good morning, everybody. i'm dara brown. tributes continue to pour in from around the globe for icon muhammad ali. an interfaith memorial was held sunday night in ali's hometown of louisville, kentucky.

this, as his body has arrived back in louisville, where a public and private memorial service are scheduled for later this week. jay gray joins us live from louisville with more. what's the atmosphere like there on the ground? >> reporter: dara, i think the overall atmosphere here, respect, thanks. since his death, many have showed up at the ali center, bringing flowers, balloons, as you can see behind me. some because of what he did inside the ring, others drawn here by his legacy outside of boxing. all to say one final good-bye to a man simply known as the greatest. muhammad ali is back home now. a chartered jet carried the body of the champ, his family and close friends back to louisville sunday afternoon, where preparations continue for a public memorial on friday, a celebration of ali's life that will include a winding 19-mile funeral procession past the places that were a part of his life, including the neighborhood where he grew up and learned to

famous person of our -- certainly of our lifetime, maybe of all time. >> reporter: the greatest. now, look, we expect to learn a lot more about the public memorial later today. we do know that former president bill clinton, comedian billy crystal and bryant gumbel will all speak during that service. >> thank you. breaking news overnight. hillary clinton has handily won puerto rico's democratic primary. clinton scored a major victory on her way to the democratic nomination, nabbing 40 delegates. she's now just 22 delegates short of the 2,383 needed to become the country's first female nominee for president. the puerto rico primary follows clinton's blowout victory in the u.s. virgin islands this weekend. a win in new jersey tomorrow could put her over the top before the california polls even

close, but businesses as usual on the campaign trail. without even mentioning her primary win last night, she continues to go after her would-be opponent, donald trump. >> donald trump has run a campaign based on insults. started with insulting immigrants, in particular mexican immigrants -- [ booing ] -- moved on to insult muslims, american-muslims, international muslims, insulted people with disabilities, insulted john mccain, and of course makes a habit of insulting women every chance he gets. >> and while clinton says she expects bernie sanders to unite behind her after tuesday night's results, sanders, it seems, has different plans. in a sign the gloves are coming off, sanders, for the first time, went after clinton for her foundation's allegeded conflicts

of interest. >> if you ask me about the clinton foundation, do i have a problem when a sitting secretary of state and a foundation run by her husband collects many millions of dollars from foreign governments, governments which are dictatorships? yeah. do i have a problem with that? yeah, i do. >> and former president bill clinton had some tough words for sanders' supporters yesterday when he responded to hecklers at this rally. >> i don't want to pick a fight, but if i were them, i'd be screaming too. if you figured this out, they're toast for election day. >> meanwhile, conservative writer, david french, rejected calls for an independent run. he says after much time and prayer, he has decided against seeking the presidency, adding, quote, first the independent path is wider than people understand. second, i'm not the right person to walk it. that comes as trump now says a muslim judge would also have trouble remaining neutral regarding his trump university case given his proposed muslims

ban. >> if it were a muslim judge, would you also feel like they wouldn't be able to treat you fairly because of that policy of yours? >> it's possible, yes. yeah, that would be possible, absolutely. >> those new comments add to trump's numerous attacks on the judge presiding over his trump university lawsuit as he continues to ruffle feathers within his party. first, speaker paul ryan said last week that he was taken aback by trump's comments against the judge saying, quote, they came out of left field. and yesterday, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, newt gingrich, and bob corker all denounced trump's comments. >> is that not a racist statement? >> i couldn't disagree more with a statement like that in. >> is it a racist statement? >> i couldn't disagree more with what he had to say. >> okay. but do you think it's a racist statement to say? >> i don't agree with what he had to say. this is a man who is born in indiana. all of us came here from somewhere else. >> i think that it was a

mistake. i think that -- i hope it was sloppiness. he says on other occasions that he has many mexican friends, et cetera, but th's irrelevant. >> i don't condone the comments, and we can press on to another topic. >> showing the strain trump is having on his company, speaker ryan will lay out his party's agenda, going around trump. it's expected to be the platform national republicans will run on. no word yet whether trump will run on the same platform. when elected president, he says he would instruct his attorney general to reinvestigate clinton over her private e-mail server, even if she is found innocent in the current investigation. when pressed, however, he would not say what she's guilty of that's criminal. as for clinton, she'll be spending the day holding four separate campaign events in the los angeles area ahead of tomorrow's california primary. she's expected to host a watch party tomorrow night in brooklyn, where her campaign headquarters is located.

now to southern california. evacuation orders have been lifted and roads opened now that a 516-acre brush fire that damaged several structures is about 80% contained. the massive blaze in the l.a. suburb of calabasas has forced the mandatory evacuation of some 5,000 people. officials say it started saturday when an suv crashed into a power pole. three firefighters were injured battling the blaze. calabasas is home to numerous celebrities. including the kardashians. the miss usa packageant hads big reveal last night. >> district of columbia! >> congratulations to the newest miss usa, the 26-year-old army officer and i.t. analysis for the u.s. department of commerce. barbara represented the district of columbia in the pageant and only the third time in history that d.c. has taken home the crown. congratulations to her. right now, tropical storm

colin is headed for florida. meteorologist bill karins is tracking the path. good morning, bill. >> tropical storm coming to florida, could have some big problems. we could get some isolated flash flooding, weak tornadoes out of this. this will be a big soaker throughout the sunshine state and coastal areas of the southeast. right now, about 40 to 50-mile-per-hour maximum winds, moving to the north-northeast at 10 to 14 miles per hour. we have tropical storm warnings for northern portions of florida. the winds could gust as high as 50 miles per hour inland. very minor type damage to trees and tree branches. that's about it. that's the danger. north florida as we go throughout this evening. and then moving along the south carolina/georgia coastline as we go throughout your tuesday. in the west, heat has been unrelenting. 82 to 84 in calabasas. shouldn't be quite as breezy.
