one way to wake up. good morning. thanks for joining us. >> the only thing want to hear growling in the morning is my stomach. appreciate our appetite for cooler weather, kari. >> looking forward to that, too. it will be gradual as we go through the week. we had searing temperatures for the past several days. this weekend started the cooling trend and it continues today. right now as we look at temperatures in the east bay and peninsula, it's 57 with highs today reaching the upper 70s for the inner bay and low 80s for the north bay, south bay and tri-valley and san francisco today. 66. we'll talk about those slightly cooler temperatures in the forecast. let's head over to mike updating us on the south bay crashes. >> right. first we have that fremont drive heading into the south bay. we are watching two crashes here. at the bottom of your screen southbound 17, one lane is

currently blocked. a deer was hit earlier. it sounds like the animal has to be removed. that is sad news to start with. one lane blocked by a single car spinout. no major injuries there and no problems heading toward the bay bridge. 5:01. moving on to decision 2016. a race to the finish. we are now in the final countdown ahead of tomorrow's primaries in the golden state. >> hillary clinton and bernie sanders are fighting to the bitter end. clinton is only a few delegates away from the nomination. sanders is not giving up any time soon. kris sanchez back with the latest for us from the campaign trail this morning. that includes the last-minute rallies scheduled for today. they are going right down to the wire. senator bernie sanders will be in san francisco tomorrow, the very day californians go to the polls. so will hillary clinton here in

the bay area. let me show you the three most recent polls conducted in the last week. nbc/"wall street journal"/marist poll puts clinton up by 2%. same story for the field poll. clinton up with a margin of error about four percentage points. clinton was in the bay area yesterday in vallejo talking with community leaders about education. in oakland where she told folks that she would bring jobs and keep trying to end gun violence. former president bill clinton was also in the bay area. he was in los gatos shaking hands. while hillary clinton is sure of a win tomorrow, she says senator sanders says that even if she takes california, his superdelegate count puts him within striking distance of the nomination if there is a broken

convention. >> if working people, young people are prepared to come out make it clear it's too late for establishment politics, we are going to win. >> after tuesday, i will do everything to reach out and try to unify the democratic party and i expect senator sanders to do the same. >> senator sanders was in san diego ahead of today's bay area trips. he will rally at crisis field with danny glover. those polls show sanders is closing on clinton's lead in california as well. she still only needs about 30 delegates to get the nomination ahead of the convention and california is just one of six states voting tomorrow. >> thank you very much. 5:03. more fallout as we talk about politics and what happened after rallies. this outside a donald trump rally in san jose where things quickly turned violent. the chair of california's republican party is demanding answers.

there will be a gathering at san jose city hall at 11:00 this morning in response to violent protesters. hundreds demonstrated outside the trump event thursday night. some people in the crowd grew rowdy picking fights with trump supporters, burning trump merchandises and egging that woman. san jose police say they were spread thin in providing security for that event. the california primary is tomorrow. you can count on nbc bay area for all your decision 2016 coverage. right now click on the voter's edge section. stanford campus on alert this morning as police search for a man who accosted two female students while they slept. around 3:00 a.m. a woman woke up to a man lifting the covers off her bed. she screamed and the man ran

from her room. the woman searched the residence for 30 minutes and eventually spotted him, but he ran away. several hours later, public safety officers said the man was back lifting the covers off another woman as she slept. that woman chased him from the home into a parking lot. we'll have a live report coming up in our next half hour. in san jose there were two deadly shootings in just as many days. the latest happened yesterday afternoon near julian and 26th street. police found a man suffering from multiple gun shot wounds who later died at a hospital. the incident is nearly identical to a shooting that happened saturday night about a mile away. the victim of that shooting was found east hills drive. that man died at the hospital. investigators are struggling for leads in both these cases. >> at this point, i don't have a reason to believe they are connected. we are in the preliminary stages of this investigation and investigating the other one, as

well. we are learning new details that the man accused of stealing a gun from an fbi's car in san francisco. he was arrested last tuesday. authorities say he stole the pistol and agent badge and i.d. over the memorial day weekend. authorities have since recovered all the items. gregory is due back in court tomorrow. santa clara deputies found themselves in an unusual standoff this weekend. instead of waiting for a criminal to emerge from a hideout, they were waiting for a mountain lion to come down from a tree. this happened saturday at mcclellan ranch preserve. the cat growled at children and ran up a tree. they decided against tranquilizing and relocating the animal. instead they waited for the mountain lion to come down and leave on its own accord, which it did after nightfall.

legal in san francisco two years ago. there was a loophole in the law that allowed hosts to list properties before registering with the city. a new proposed rule would require short-term rental websites to post registration numbers to help weed out illegal rentals. the legislation goes to the board of supervisors this week. the weekend is over. everyone going back to work. that includes wall street which is trying to absorb the bizarre jobs report. >> no interest rate hike any time soon? >> no. i don't think so. not with what we saw friday. a jaw-dropper of a jobs number. 38,000 jobs added in the month of may. we've been in the hundreds of thousands of jobs added for months. this means the fed's going to punt on any planned rate hike. and serves fears the economy slowed. there were bright spots. unemployment rate, lowest it's been in more than a decade. hourly wages up better than 2%

economy added just 38,000 jobs last month. no major economic data today, but fed chair janet yellen speaks this afternoon. dow fell 31 points, nasdaq lost 28. >> a hacker group claims it was able to hack into several accounts owned by facebook ceo mark zuckerberg over the weekend, his twitter and pinterest account. the hacker posted screen shots to prove the access. zuckerberg regained control. they used new data from the old hack of linkedin. you probably have old accounts, myspace would be a good example of one that still works, you just don't use it any more. if that has easy access, the hackers may be able to use that access to then jump to the next one. now they may know something they

didn't know before. go back and look at some of those old accounts. things you don't use. >> he doesn't have a firewall set up for people specifically monitoring his account. >> firewall would work differently. someone specifically watching his accounts would be a great idea. i think he probably forgot he has them. >> now we know his really good chicken recipe and arts and crafts for the kids. 5:18. two-smile stretch of southern california coast line shut down over concerns about large sharks in the water. sheriffs' helicopter crews spotted the sharks in huntington beach. most of the sharks were believed to be at least 8 feet long and swimming 150 yards from shore. two beaches were closed but may reopen today. the sighting comes a week after a shark attack on a swimmer. 5:18. people living along florida's gulf coast are preparing for tropical storm colin in

northwest florida. inmates helped to fill up almost 7,500 sandbags to be handed out to residents. national weather service expects the tropical storm to make landfall today or tomorrow north of tampa. they say heavy rain and high surf are the main threats. as much as 8 inches of rain is expected along with the storm surge of almost three feet. no precipitation in our neck of the woods, just a lot of heat. >> it won't be as bad through the week. it's looking better through this work week. let's get a look at the golden gate bridge. we start out with cloudy skies. we'll see more clouds, especially along the coast. it will keep it from getting steamily. 59 is where you're starting now in concord. 57 in oakland. 60 in san jose. we had this area of high pressure building the heat, but that will start to back off and move farther to the south and to

the ea. we'll see this area of low pressure moving in. that will give us a stronger onshore flow. morning fog and clouds near the coast and much cooler temperatures throughout the next several days, especially for the end of the week. today is still very warm in the south bay. up to 85 in morgan hill. petaluma 78. oakland 70. 88 today in dublin. seven-day forecast, here is a look at san francisco are. it does stay right at about average along the coast and in the city. then we'll see a gradual warming trend in a couple of those spots. still very hot in the tri-valley today and tomorrow. average temperature 78. we will not see that until friday when the stronger onshore flow kicks in. making plans for the weekend, we are going to see those temperatures feeling better this weekend compared to last weekend. you can make some plans to get

outside. we are talking in san francisco and low 80s. let's head over to mike for a look at what's happening. >> we see a few folks in the cash lanes slowing down. they are backing up there. fastrack lane moving very well before the metering lights go on. look at the rest of the bay. i have circled the approach from the maze heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza. earlier crash not an issue. it was reported off the berkeley curve. we showed the flowing at the incline. in the area, eastbound 580 at macarthur boulevard, closing that off ramp a number of weeks. san pablo avenue, a much bigger roadway. the rest of your bay shows an easy flow of traffic. highway 9 cleared. east 237 going on at macarthur

5:24, today an ohio prosecutor will announce if he plans to charge the family whose 4-year-old boy fell into the gorilla exhibit. cincinnati police say they are focusing their investigation on the child's parents and family. they have since turned those results over to the prosecutor's office. most legal experts believe the child endangerment or similar charges are unlikely to be filed. veteran news photographer and editor for npr died after an attack in afghanistan. david gilkey and an afghanistan translator were killed on assignment. the convoy came under fire and their vehicle was hit. gilkey seen on the right covered both national and international news for the network and made numerous trips to afghanistan and iraq. his work has won many awards,

minutes. over to mike for an update on the south bay crash. >> we'll show you the backup at the bay bridge. no real issues at the bay but in the south bay tracking this crash heading over toward 880. one lane blocked, one not is for those out the altamont crash. bizarre incident near stanford as police are searching for clues. >> a man accosted two women as they were sleeping, walking into their rooms. pete, it happened more than once. >> reporter: yes. we had two incidents here on campus drive. this male suspect entering the unlocked rooms of two female

victims. the first one happened around 3:00 a.m. when that took place, the suspect entered the room lifting the bed covers off the victim and standing over her. he ran off after she screamed. you had a similar incident between 6:00 and 6:45 a.m. the victim chased the suspect away. he was last seen running toward this area on campus drive. hispanic male adult between 18 and 30 years old. approximately 5'9", stocky build, short brown hair, brown ice, last seen wearing a gray shirt. this is an ongoing investigation. if you have information, contact stanford university. pete suratos. it is 5:32. a man is behind bars after he engaged in lewd behavior. police say a woman and her 5-year-old daughter were walking on hemlock street saturday night when a man drove up alongside

coverage. right now, click on our voter's edge election guide to find unbiased and indepth information on candidates and local races. >> talk about the temperatures rising. wildfire season is here. hundreds of firefighters across the state are on the front lines battling six large fires. most are in southern california. there's also one burning right now near monterey. 44 local fire figfighters are assisting with that fire. after only a half hour it spread to more than 3,000 acres. more than 120 homeowners had to evacuate. the alameda county fire department said many factors are making this a particularly tough fire season. >> the weather is working against them. it's high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds. the fuel type is brush which allows for rapid fire spread.

>> as for that fire near monterey, it's listed at about 10% containment. >> another wildfire burning near an upscale los angeles suburb. some are returning home. firefighters say the so-called old fire is now 80% contained. now they want to keep residents safe. fire burned 500 acres and slid off into neighbors burning back yards and damaging homes. 5,000 people were evacuated at one point. neighbors say it was a mad rush to get everyone to safety. >> i could see the smoke and fire. >> a driver lost control of a car and crashed into power poles downing lines in three different places. >> we are bracing ourselves for what might be a very active fire season this summer.

statements how unsafe that city is. >> good morning. we spent the last six months or so digging into what life is really like on the streets of oakland. we pieced together economic data to show how there are right now two very different oaklands. we found the vibrant and booming part of oakland where high-tech companies are moving and jobs plentiful. unemployment 8% and dropping. there have only been five murders and a dozen gun arrests since last august. down the street nearby in east oakland, we found another part of the city that still lags very far behind, where unemployment is more than 18%, the average salary only about half what the others make citywide. 21,000 people there in east oakland live below the poverty line. there have been 26 murders and 90 gun arrests in that part of the city since last august.
