some cushy jail cell somewhere. >> mark, good morning. morgan freeman, that must have been intimidating. >> it was. it was god! >> it was. you're like right in his face. "now you see me 2." i've gotten a chance to talk to a bunch of the actors this week and everybody said they were really up to the sequel. it was not a hard decision. >> no. it is really a great group of people and we have a lot of fun together. we all had our hand in the script, in the collaboration with ed solomon, our great writer. so we were all -- we all had a hand in it. we all were really pulling for it to be good. >> it is really fun because it has this whole magic theme. it's really different. were you one of the actors that went to the so-called magic boot camp? >> i did one day at magic boot camp just because i wanted to see them doing magic boot camp. i don't get to do a lot of magic in this particular movie.
8:35 am
maybe in "now you see me 3" i'll get to do it more. >> people are talking about that. >> i know. >> are you into it? >> if "now you see me 2 "does well. >> you don't have any magic but you do have a fight scene. >> it was a real choreographed fight scene that has kind of an homage to jackie chan. it has magic in it, it has some humor and it has good fighting in it. but yeah, i generally don't get to do that kind of thing but i love doing that. >> it looks really fun. i have another shot, i have a behind-the-scenes situation where -- this is what i heard about it. that you're coming out of the water, and you start coughing -- see if we can roll it. then something happens. let's see. >> here you are. there is your action.
8:36 am
>> ooh! you act like you vomit on yourself. >> i acted like i vomit on myself! i did! >> oh, i thought you were playing a prank on them. >> oh, my gosh. >> no. i swallowed water. >> i thought it was a prank and the guys were like, wow, that's really real. >> i actually did. first i ate woody harrelson's fake cheesecake which was like a raw cashew faux cheesecake. and so that wasn't sitting well with me after lunch. and i had to do this coughing scene where i come out of the water from drowning. and all of a sudden i'm coughing and coughing and then all of a sudden i'm -- i throw up. >> i just want to say that, if i knew that was really you actually being sick, i don't know if i would have played it. i feel kind of bad now. >> yeah. my fellow cast members, did

back now, 8:40, with our special series "fresh start today." this morning, hitting the refresh button on your finances. when a survey conducted by the federal reserve board asked respondents how they'd pay for a $400 emergency, 47% of americans said they would have to cover the expense by borrowing money or selling something, or that they wouldn't be able to come up with the money the a all. if you're part of that 47%, our resident money maven jean
8:41 am
chatzky is here. you know what struck me? that $400 is not really a lot of money when it comes to a real financial emergency. >> that's right. $400 could push a lot of people over edge. what's really scary about this is we are watching our credit card debt numbers tick up very quickly. we are almost at 2008 levels. >> we put out the call online for people who found themselves in this same situation and they could ask you their questions. kelly from milwaukee. >> i'm recently divorced, and while i make a nice salary, in any given month i would have a hard time coming up with $400 in the event of an emergency. this past month, for example, my basement flooded. in order to clean that up i had to set a couple of bills aside that i couldn't pay. in addition, i have two teenage daughters who when they need money i give it to them and that adds up over the course of the month. >> she's got issues with spending, then that issue with giving her kids money. >> that's right. so we dug in. the first thing i toll her to do
8:42 am
was just track her spending. she had to figure out where that money was actually going. and what she found was she's going to the grocery store four different, five different times a week. we put a lid on that. she's spending a lot less. also with the kids, she was giving each teenager $20 each week, adds up to $160 to $200 a month. it's summer. they've put out notices. they're going to get jobs, baby-sit, walk dogs. >> you think you can come up with the $400 that way. >> very quickly. >> next up with be j, jen and a maine. >> we have two children with medical issues. if the time were to come that they needed medical care or got sick, that i would not get paid to stay home with them. so therefore, our bills get behind and the medical bills come in and we need to pay them. >> jen and adam find themselves in a position a lot of people
8:43 am
do. medical expenses. >> by the way, medical expenses are really tough but a lot of people believe they're not negotiable, that you can't shop around for things like prescription drugs. that's an entire different segment but you can and you should talk to your doctor about lowering the price. meanwhile, we'll find their $400 by working on their monthly expenses. they got a lot of redundancies. $400 on cell phone bills, plus bills from land lines. we cut some of those expenses. immediately found $60 a month. she's working part-time but she's got to work to bring in additional income while staying home. took a look at her skills and recommended she look for jobs as a virtual assistant. >> because her salary goes like this and she needs to steady it out. >> she just needs to bring more in. >> next up, just continue frin cincinnati. >> i currently work two jobs, one is commission without benefits. because i don't get a regular paycheck it makes it very difficult to make ends meet an
8:44 am
plan for each month and plan for the future. >> the guy's working two jobs and still has this $400 problem. >> that's right. he's working two jobs but his income is not steady and he needs to do what's called income smoothing. take his income for six months, divide by six so he knows what his monthly income really is. that way he can stay on a budget. he's also too overreliant right now on his parents. while they are helping him out -- which they are right now -- i want him to super charge his savings and figure out what it will cost him to actually move out. you need a goal to work toward in order to get yourself there. >> kudos to the parents who are helping as so many parents across the country are. >> absolutely. my son is graduating from college in a week and he needs a job, too. by the way. >> all right. general tips. >> automate your savings. if you see money at the bottom line offy you are bank account, you are going to spend it. get it out of there. only withdraw for mrnlgs and

8:49 am
the adult animals of shelters are problem children and that's why they're there. that's not necessarily the case. sometimes it is really sad circumstances where the owner passed away. i say visit the adult animals first when you go to your local shelter. they are the best pets. >> talk about some of the friends you brought. >> savannah, you've got a 10-week-old, i think a shepherd mix. we do a lot of rescues from the cayman islands. she's going to be about 50 pounds so i think that she needs a yard. children. a perfect family dog. she's about 10 weeks old. >> she matches your dress. >> tamron? >> tamron's got a 13-week-old retriever mix. we named her mattie. she's probably going to be about 60 pounds. a great family dog. she's already spayed. she's ready to go home right now. anybody in the studio can take this one home. we spay and neuter all our pets

you were nine years ago so this is a better play because of it. >> yeah. well, we all get better. you do this show for a year and you're better than you were a year ago. just little things. so you come out of newsroom and do some other things, then you get to do "blackbird" again, then you think, okay, i have the tools to actually no you do this. that's been a joy to revisit it and go deeper. >> how was it to receive the tony nomination? >> that was great but i really wanted it for me and michelle. it is just the two of us for 90 minutes of just slugfest and so when they were announcing the names, it wasn't jeff -- it was -- listen. i have worked too hard and we both got in.
