today in the bay begins with breaking news. >> oh, my god. they're all shooting back and forth. >> that breaking news is out of florida this morning. police say at least 20 people are dead and at least 42 people are injured in a mass shooting at a popular gay nightclub in orlando, florida. the gunman has been sooided as omar mateen. he was shot and killed by s.w.a.t. teams after a standoff and hostage situation inside that club. authorities believe mateen may have been radicalized and planned the shooting. so far authorities are saying the gunman is a u.s. citizen born in new york with an address

in florida. the shooting reportedly started around 2:00 a.m. eastern time at the gay club called pulse in downtown orlando. club owners say about 100 people were inside when the attack started. the club took to facebook during the massacre and posted, quote, everyone get out of pulse and keep running. >> we are a strong, resilient community. tonight we had a crime that will have a lasting effect on our community. we node to stand strong. we need to be supportive of the victims and their families. >> authorities are calling the shooting an act of domestic terrorism. this mass shooting happened just one day after another shooting also in orlando. on friday night a star on nbc's "the voice" was shot and killed at an autograph signing at her concert. authorities right now don't think the two are connected. we will have updates for you as they come in both on air until 8:00 a.m. this morning and

victory over the penguins this evening. of course a lot of fans happy and ready, excited, for this win tonight. it's been a long stanley cup finals. >> down two games to three -- >> hopefully they can come home and take the series back. >> fingers crossed. anthony, thanks. we want to turn now to stanford, the students graduating today from stanford are planning to use the commencement to show support for victims of sexual assault. many of the students are outraged at the six-month sentence for brock turner, the former stanford student convicted of sexually assaulted a woman on campus. it's a case, of course, that's gotten international attention. the demonstration today is planned as graduating seniors walk to their seats. they want to highlight sexual assault as both a campus problem and a judicial problem in the wake of what consider turner's lenient jail sentence following his sexual assault conviction. congressman jackie speier is calling for judge aaron persky

to resign. he is the one who issued turner's six-month sentence when prosecutors called for six years behind bars. >> this cannot just be a little pebble floating across the lake with a couple of ripple effects. this needs to be something that really drives us to do something significant on the issue of rape. >> the congresswoman is pushing a house bill to require more public disclosure. a campus investigation of sexual assaults nationwide. now to a memorial of flowers and candles is growing at the scene of friday night's deadly crash in south san francisco where two people died. relatives you see here of the victims understandably very emotional as they visited the scene. we have video of how the intersection of airport boulevard and pine avenue looked just after the crash. a 19-year-old driver is now under arrest accused of driving under the influence. police say he was speeding a ii

hit another car. an 18-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were killed. no one in the other car was injured. explosive new details in the sex scandal involving members of the oakland police department. the mayor released a statement promising transparency in the investigation as these new allegations come to light. the scandal was first reported when accusations surface that had three oakland police officers had sexual relations with an underaged girl. that girl's mother worked as a police dispatcher. now the east bay express is reporting that the girl had sex with several more opd officers after she turned 18 and that some of those officers tipped her off ahead of prostitution stings in order to keep her out of jail. the now 18-year-old woman said she also had relationships with officers at other east bay police departments. the east bay express also reports the scandal is what cost oakland police chief shawn wendt his job.

the mayor is disputing these new reports and promising a full investigation. a bay area teen whose puppy was stolen from him at gunpoint has his dog back home safely. last monday in san leandro the 14-year-old was walk iing his puppy named maya when two men pulled up and snatched the dog at gunpoint and drove off. police say someone came forward on friday night and dropped off the 3-month-old german shepherd at the police department saying his friend bought the dog off the street for just a few hundred dollars, and the man says when he saw the news and realized maya had been stolen, they came to turn her in. because the thieves still hasn't been caught, the teen doesn't want to show his face on camera but had this reaction for us. >> surprised and excited the first time i heard about it. >> in a case like this, it's

equally as important not only to catch the armed robbers but almost even more important to return that dog to the 14-year-old boy. >> police are still looking for those two thieves who took maya at gunpoint. they may have been in a silver or gray four-door mercedes. oakland firefighters called to a frequent trouble spot for a car that needed to be rescued from the water. they posted this video on twitter of an suv you see nearly submerged in the canal off high street and interstate 880. you can see the firefighter in the water equipped with the only vest. the driver did manage to get out safely with the help of that firefighter. under one of those twitter messages posted a toer says a car goes into the water at this spot a few times a year. and take a look at this. the car ended up in a backyard pool yesterday afternoon. this happened in sonoma. the driver of the car an elderly man is expected to be okay.

there was no one in the pool at the time of the crash. a witness was able to help get the man out of his car before the car filled with water. no word yet on the cause of that crash. people in the south bay are marking the opening of a new health center in downtown san jose. valley health center returns to san jose for the first time in 12 years. the center brings back urgent care and eventually primary care and radiology services. it will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. and will serve a community in dire need of a nearby health center. >> 90% of the need will be walk-in, you know, outpatient kind of services and i think that's what the clinics excel in, so we're trying to get people away from our emergency room. >> the center officially opens for business tomorrow. and it's just shy of 7:09 right now. still ahead on "today in the bay" a rising star gunned down while signing autographs after a show.

nbc bay area. new changes begin this weekend at yosemite national park. park leaders are test iing a reserved parking program to help ease all that traffic congestion in the park. if you've been, you know what i'm talking about. visitors can reserve one of 150 day use spots near the lodge for the next few weekends. a fee of $1.50 is charged in order to reserve your parking spot and park leaders say they may extend the program if it goes well. more than 2,500fighting aid across california. the life cycle ride to end aids is a 545-mile ride. it started last week in san francisco and ended yesterday in los angeles. this year's ride is expected to raise $16 million for aids research and education. well, san francisco, of course, is the focal point of the bay area. a beautiful live look at the

the city. here's something folks really like to see, the golden gate bridge, not shrouded like fog as it usually is. today if you are visiting town, there you go. you have a good shot. it continue to stay bright all day long as we continue to see high pressure in control. we have offshore winds and that will warm up quickly once again for the inland valleys. the east bay yesterday you were closer to 90. today closer to 80. 84 in the north bay. here are your numbers, again, not as hot for the inner bay. hayward at 76 degrees today. redwood city up to 79. look at that, santa cruz after yesterday getting close to 80 degrees only close to 70 for today. notice those inland numbers, lots of 80s from gilroy over to concord, even napa and santa rosa. we have the red flag fire warning if you're going to be traveling up to san francisco and points north. that's where we have the highest fire danger for today until 2:00 this afternoon just coupled with low humidity and gusty winds.

it includes the delta as well. keep that in mind. look at the satellite and radar. we don't have much happening at home. that's rain and even some clouds. we'll talk about that in a little bit. let's talk about the temperatures over the next couple of days. it's not going to be as hot later today. 80s for the inland valleys and 70s for the coastline. tomorrow a big shift in the pattern. fog returns at the coastline. we'll see 60s for san francisco. 70s for most of the bay tomorrow and it gets even cooler after that. we're talking 60s and 70s for most of the bay and that will be the general trend as we head towards the next couple of days. there are the showers i was telling you about. zoom in and get a closer look. an up level system sitting down to our south and that is what is bringing the showers in place. if i can click this button and zoom in, show you what i'm talking about. lightning, thunder, and this is actually just very close to places like morgan hill and gilroy. we have some showers pop up just

about 40 miles south of gilroy. you can see the showers and there is gilroy. so this morning we may see a brief shower across extreme southern portions of the viewing area. gilroy, morgan hill. i don't it will be much more than that. if you are traveling east of 5, keep in mind over fresno showers and even some mountain thunder as we head through the day. the sea breeze returns tomorrow. that's the general trend in our shift in the weather as this area of low pressure starts to get out of here and then as we watch the next couple of days we'll stay cool, we're going to start to see our patterns shift especially by thursday. a cold front develop off the coastline, thursday night look at this. showers for san francisco and points north. this is where i think we'll see the best chance of any rain this upcoming week. thursday evening it fizzles out. by friday morning, i do think we'll be dry but, unfortunately, it's not going to be a huge rain event for everybody. i think this is mostly concentrating to the north bay and coastline.

24-year-old anthony lee on charges of robbery, assault and battery. the late nest a string of arrests connected to the rowdy demonstration outside the convention center back on june 2nd. in all nine people are now facing charges connected to the protests, four of them are minors. several people remain at-large suspected to be involved. san jose police say they are committed to holding everyone who attacks trump supporters accountable. and donald trump is back out on the campaign trail this weekend holding rallies in tampa and in pittsburgh. the presumptive gop nominee told the republican party to, quote, get his act together to beat democrat hillary clinton in the presidential election. he also took suggestions for potential running mates from the crowd which included condoleezza rice and newt gingrich. trump also respond ed to accusations that he is racist in the wake of the trump university scandal. >> i am the least racist person

subscription designed to boost her home's ranking in search results on vrbo's site. >> ten pages of homes and this way with platinum you'll be on the first page, most like ly at the top. we thought it was worth the cost. it was an investment in marketing. >> reporter: an investment that paid off. she said rent iing her home was breeze, at first. but three months ago vrbo started charging travelers a service fee, 4% to 9% of the total cost of the rental a cost vrbo pockets not carrie. show says this wasn't part of her agreement with vrbo and now because of it travelers aren't renting her home. it's too expensive. >> we didn't pay a platinum subscription to have vrbo service this way. >> reporter: her listing fell way down on vrbo's search results. she says vrbo told her it may get another change, this one to its algorithm and her platinum

supporters she's much more desirable than trump. she can do that by supporting issues without losing support. trump has to calm party leaders who are worried he's unmanageable, and has to tone down the rhetoric that has been perceived as anti-minority, anti-female, these kinds of things. these are huge elements of the elected minorities and females. the bottom line this is an important period. between now and the end of july they have to get their troops lined up behind them. they have to go in feeling good and complete. so far they both have challenges. >> before you go, we only have a minute, i want to talk to you about the shooting in orlando. how does this unbelievable tragedy affect the political process now? >> one thing is for sure.

welcome back. 7:55 the time on this sunday morning. a shot from san francisco and you can see the golden gate bridge. fog drifting through but most is over the water you can see the rest of the bay area looking good, sunshine for the peninsula, the east bay and south bay will lead to another warm day for our inland valleys, talking 80s but not as hot. yesterday some places got close to 90. today we'll be closer to 80 degrees. the south bay, the same deal for the east bay. san francisco will be cool. 70 degrees there. now if you're doing any traveling to sacramento, points north, keep in mind we still do have a red flag fire warning that remains in effect today until 2:00. we have dry winds that will be gusty through the day. that fire danger is in place and we still do have active fires burning across the state. keep that in mind as we go through the next couple of days that we are going to see cooler weather which is great news but 80s for the north bay, even the

inner bay will see some 80s down to the south bay. tomorrow 70s approach most of the bay. we'll see the 60s and it gets even cooler as we head to tuesday and wednesday. 60s and 70s for most of the bay area this upcoming week. this morning an area of low pressure to our south keeping clouds in place for places like fresno, bakersfield, even to gilroy. we had fact, you can see morgan hill south of there we have thunderstorms pop up earlier this michael jordan. if you're doing any traveling down 5 or over towards fresno, keep in mind you may run into thunderstorms later on. for the time being, though, the system will move out of here. the sea breeze returns tomorrow making for a cooler week ahead and then by thursday a system will pass to our north. i think right now the north bay has the best chance of seeing anything as far as rainfall goes. at the coastline we may get a little drizzle thursday morning. as it moves through thursday

afternoon and thursday evening we're expected to dry back out. the thing about this system not going to get the entire bay area wet and it's not going to give us measurable precipitation, probably just enough to get the ground wet. everywhere else, 80s today, 75 tomorrow. >> anthony, thanks. we want to quickly give you a final update out of orlando. at least 50 people are dead and 53 people are injured after that mass shooting at a gay nightclub in orlando. the deadliest mass shooting in american history is being called an act of domestic terrorism. the gunman has been identified as omar mateen, a u.s. citizen. he was shot and killed by s.w.a.t. teams after an hour's long standoff and a hostage situation inside the nightclub. authorities, again, are calling this shooting an act of domestic terrorism. they believe it could be related to religion. nbc news spoke with the gunman's father today. he says no. please stay tuned to nbc bay

the gunman used an assault rifle in the shooting. police saying it was an ar-15. mateen was also armed with a handgun. the gunfire began around 2:00 this morning local time and a hostage situation soon unfolded from there. about three hours later s.w.a.t. teams stormed the nightclub and a shooting ensued. mateen was killed by police gunfire. the fbi says it will be investigating this as an act of domestic terror. let's turn back now to nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. a lot of people around the country just waking up to this news out west this news out west perhaps. what more are you hearing about the shooter who you've learned is omar mateen? >> reporter: omar mir mateen, 29 years old, originally born in new york and lived in florida near his parents, had been married, we believe had a son. i think he's divorced. we don't know whether he's remarried.
