4:30 am
==laura/2shot== and i'm laura garcia cannon. >>. >> good monday morning. you are watching "today in the bay." we begin live from orlando with the latest details on the worst mass shooting in u.s. history. >> with more to come. the number to call for families is 407-246-4357. as the next of kin are being notified, we are putting the names of the victims on city of orlando/victims. again, i want to compliment the medical examiner for the work they did all night long making
4:31 am
the identifications then notifying the next of kin. we will continue that process today. we will not be defined by the act of a cowardly hater. we will be defined how we respond, how we treat each other. this community has already stepped up to be the best. thank you. governor. >> thank you, mayor. just a few minutes ago i asked t president obama to declare state of emergency for orlando, orange county. the mayor did it for the city. you think about thank god it wasn't our family. if you go through that list of family members, we have a lot of individuals from puerto rico, wonderful puerto rican community. k.j. morris that just moved here from hawaii to take care of mother and grandmother. the individual that works at harry potter. i was just there last week.
4:32 am
these are people we interact with every day of our lives. our law enforcement has done a wonderful job. the miami beach department, sheriff's department, fbi did a wonderful job getting the bodies removed from pulse and the medical examiner did a great job identifying the bodies. this is a wonderful community we live in. this is a wonderful state. we are the best melting pot in the world. 23 million people live here. it's a wonderful place to live and visit. we are going to continue to work hard to take care of these families and make sure we try to get this community and state back. right now it's time to grieve for each family member that lost a loved one or still has somebody in the hospital injured. i turn it over to orlando chief. >> good morning. i want to provide more information about our initial
4:33 am
response. and subsequent rescue. many, many people. we had an extra duty officer working for pulse night club in full police uniform. about 2:00 he responded to shots fired. he did engage in the gun battle with the suspect somewhere near one of the entrances. shortly after that, additional officers responded. those additional officers made entry while the suspect was shooting. engaged in another gun battle with the suspect. forced him to stop shooting and retreat to the bathroom where we believe he had several hostages. at that time, we were able to save and rescue dozens and dozens of people injured and not injured and get them out of the club. things kind of stabilized based on statements made by the suspect about explosives, about
4:34 am
possible bomb vests. we kind of secured everything. called s.w.a.t. and we did set up for an explosive breach on the bathroom wall where we knew there were 15 people in the opposing bathroom to where the suspect was with his hostages. based on statements made by the suspect, based on information we received from the suspect and from the whose tanles and people inside, we believe further loss of life was imminent. i made the decision to commence the rescue operation and do the explosive breach. the explosive breach did not penetrate the wall completely. we used our armored vehicle, barakaat armored vehicle to bunch a hole in that wall. there was a hole in the wall about two feet off the ground and two, three feet wide. we were able to rescue dozens
4:35 am
and dozens of people that came out of that hole. the suspect came out of that hole himself armed with a hand gun and long gun, engaged in a gun battle with officers where he was ultimately killed. at that time -- at this time i want to say the initial responding officers and all the other law enforcement active very heroically and courageous and saved many, many lives during this operation. one officer was struck in the kevlar helmet above his forehead. that helmet did save his life. i spoke to him at length last night. he is doing great. >> so good morning. i want to talk briefly about
4:36 am
what our primary mission for all of us today is. that's the identification of the victims, notification of the family. as you heard from mayor deyer. we confirmed 48 of our 49 victims. the last identity confirmation is pending. we anticipate having that name shortly. a number of those as you heard from the mayor, we notified their next of kin. that is our 100% priority mission today. the city of orlando is advertising the names of those victim as we make the notification to the family member. i'll explain how that is going. we have teams of agents we are deploying as we are identifying these victims throughout the state and throughout the nation to identify the family members to let them know their loved one is deceased. once we confirmed that, that is the time we'll post that to our website. i ask everybody respect the
4:37 am
privacy of the family and that we will advertise those names of those victims but only at the time we can confirm next of kin is notified. that is the primary mission of all of us right now, to notify the family members exactly that one of their loved ones is dead. then we will advertise those names publically to the rest of the community. i believe the fbi is ready spoke speak. u.s. attorney lee bentley. >> yesterday was the most horrific day in the history of orlando dealing with the largest mass shooting in the history of the united states. terrible tragedy. on behalf of the federal government, i would like to thank our state and local partners.
4:38 am
the department of law enforcement, orlando police department, orange county sheriff's office, the men and women of these agencies have been working tirelessly over the last day and a half. on behalf of the federal government, i would also like to thank the governor and all the elected officials. we are working very closely with our partners, main department of justice and national security division. we are working with the fbi and atf. an amazing amount has been done in just over 24 hours. almost all the victims have been identified. the notification process is ongoing. we've been collecting a great amount of electronic and physical evidence.
4:39 am
there is an ongoing criminal investigation. it is still in the early stages. we do not know yet whether anyone else will be charged in connection with this crime. i do want to let you know we have no reason to believe that anyone connected to this crime is placing the public in imminent danger at this time, but there is an investigation of other persons. we have teams of prosecutors and agents working around the clock, getting search warrants, court orders. if anyone else was involved in this crime, they will be prosecuted. now i'm going to turn it over to the atf, special agent in charge lombardo. thank you. >> good morning. first i would just like to extend atf's family would like
4:40 am
to extend a heartfelt warm appreciation for the extended visit here today. we are here to give you their role in the investigation. on the scene there were two weapons on the scene. atf brings unique tracing capabilities to the table. we've been able to trace the weapons. they have been traced to the shooter. the third weapon was found in his vehicle. we are still working on tracing that weapon as well. we wld like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims' families as well as lgtb community. we are working with a team of analysts, special agents, working together with the fbi and all our state and local
4:41 am
partners here today. we have a team of people here able to provide what we can to this investigation. i'd like to turn it over to the fbi, special agent in charge. >> good morning. special agent in charge of the fbi here in tampa, but includes rlando resident agency. yesterday you heard from ron harper who did an incredible job for the fbi. one of these things to take away from this is events such as this bring the community together, including the law enforcement community. as you see, everybody represented here, we all worked together from the get-go, from the time 2:00 in the morning when these shootings began, everybody rallied together to work the case as one force. we have a joint terror attack force which all these agency representatives are also
4:42 am
representatives. we work cases side by side. a lot of the investigation has been disclosed to you. the main thing we looked at in the very beginning is the victims. as you heard, there are 49 deceased, 48 identified. family members of about 24 families have been notified. we also had brought down 30 witness victims specialists to work with the families to get them what they need. resources are available. other agencies brought their resources down. fbi brought resources from the miami field office, atlanta field office, jacksonville field office, as well as quantico, virginia. the laboratory sent down a shooting reconstructionist. as of last night all the victims were removed from the pulse bar lounge.
4:43 am
now we are going to be processing it with the shooting reconstruction team to get as much forensic evidence as we can at that point. the investigation continues. over the night, we probably processed 100 leads worked on by agents and task officers combined. the task force has been up and running and will continue to run and bring the resources to bear. our focus is to get the truth, get it to you as quickly as we can. there is a balancing act. a lot of what we do in investigations may become classified. can't disclose that information. we ask your patience and you bear with us. we'll disclose what we can and when we can. you have to recognize when we can't it's not because we don't want to, there may be prosecutions down the road. we are not sure where leads will go. post 9/11, no stone is unturned. that's the same today as it was
4:44 am
then. every terrorism case and investigation will be worked the same way. we'll follow the leads wherever they take us and brief you when we can. you have to bear with us on that and trust our judgment. the fbi has been in existence over 108 years and we work cases hard and being straight forward with you. we don't want to violate that trust by giving bogus information that we have to come back out and tell you that information is wrong. we keep you abreast as best we can giving you accurate information. it may take some time to get that you accurate information. we ask you to bear with us. the first responders saved lives responding as quickly as they did. numerous people were brought out alive and unharmed. many more are in the hospital, hopefully recover and begin that healing process. this community has come together
4:45 am
and hopefully that will maintain and stay the course. barring that, we'll take some questions. >> why has the number changed from 49 to 53? >> i think what some people were given out the shooter was included in the number 50. there were 49 victims. we don't count the shooter as a victim. 48 have been identified as present. 24 families have been made aware of their location. >> can you clarify one thing. >> a couple more remarks first. >> good morning. this has certainly been a trying time for all of us. i can tell you as a native of orlando, this is certainly touching to my family and i. i served here in this community with the orlando police department and now the orange county sheriff. there's never really been a time
4:46 am
where i've seen where the agencies at the federal, state and local level have really come together to work throughout the night. our agencies have continued to work with the fbi. we have great partnerships i am certain within a short period of time all these victims will be able to be identified and those families will be reunited with their loved ones, if you will. that effort is certainly going on. we have received a tremendous outpouring of support from across the country, from our colleagues and law enforcement, and i can tell you that it's very heart warming to all of us who wear the badge and carry the gun on a daily basis. as i have talked with some of my staff and some of the staff of the orlando police department who responded yesterday to this tragedy, the men and women were certainly touched by this.
4:47 am
many of them saw carnage they would never, ever see in any other location. if you think about it, this is not a war zone we are living in. this is a civilized society and we had to deal with something unthinkable which 50 people, our 49 victims and an individual died yesterday. many of these law enforcement officers had to go in and observe that. now it's about putting our community, our nation back together and assuring those individuals are able to come back to work and do their job. that's where i am, working with all our partners to take care of our brave souls who responded. i believe we are terning it over to the attorney general is what i was hold. is that correct?
4:48 am
attorney general pam bundy. >> good morning. just to update you from last night. for the last about 15 or 20 minutes, we have been listening to various members of local law enforcement, state governor of florida rick scott, fbi, special agents describing the scene leading up to and the aftermath of that pulse shooting. we learned a lot of key pieces of information. >> it's not they downgraded the number but 49 people were killed in the night club shooting. they are not including the gunman who was also killed. >> also discussing the fact this is an ongoing investigation. they know about the shoot er omr mateen. you heard a law enforcement official describing this as not
4:49 am
a war zone but civil sized society. >> they do add it's not believes there is any imminent threat right now. our own michelle roberts is in orlando right now. we expect to hear from her in just about 10 to 15 minutes. she'll have the latest updates live from florida this morning. a lot to digest and figure out. we'll have continued coverage. there's moving... and there's moving with move free ultra. it has triple-action support for your joints, cartilage and bones. and unlike glucosamine chondroitin,
