live in san jose, a truck slams into a house and the homeowner says this has happened many times before. today in the bay continues right now. a very good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. let's get you going this morning with a forecast that feels comfortable. >> comfortable. have the sunglasses. we'll have a lot of sunshine as we go throughout the day. we are seeing it this morning all across the bay area. temperatures now in the mid 50s as you head out the door. light jacket needed. not later on today. we'll be in the 70s for most of the inland areas. mid 60s for the coast and san francisco. we'll take a look ahead to a chance of rain and warmer temperatures this weekend. a lot of changes. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike is watching what's happening in walnut creek. >> southbound 680 off highway

24, let's show you what we are talking about on the map. volume starts to build around the bay. nothing dramatic for the maze. farther east, south 680. off highway 246789 we are starting to see more consistently show speed better than 30 miles per hour. you head downed where there was a crash there. another south of there. sounds like all the activity moved to the shoulder. that recovery starting to kick in now. a live look at 101 northbound. the second one will kick in about a half hour if everything goes as planned. we'll track it. back to you. >> thank you. the world uniting in honor of the victims from the bay area to paris. people are coming together to remember those killed in the orlando terror attack. >> we are learning more about the shooter and his days leading up to the attack that killed 49 people. michelle roberts has been in orlando reporting since yesterday. she is going to give us more information on that in a moment.

first a growing memorial outside the hospital as we talk about remembering and honoring those victims. >> reporter: there are memorials popping up all over orlando. 49 people killed. all their names have been released. 53 people were injured. many of those people were brought here to orlando health. you can see the growing memorial behind me. one sign saying, "we are strong" and "we love our survivors." investigators have begun to recreate the crime scene at pulse night club by using evidence and witness testimony to determine exactly what happened. they will also be continuing to interview the gunman's family, friends and co-workers. there are reports omar mateen, 29 years old, sent messages using a gay dating site and he had been seen at pulse night club several times. federal officials say mateen appeared to be a home grown

terrorist. >> unfortunately, he's evil. we happen to be the gun store he picked. there is nothing else i can say. >> hate cannot bring an end to hate. only love can do that. >> mateen was on the fbi watch list for remarks he made about terrorist connections. if he tried to buy a gun then, the fbi would have been notified. because the case was closed, they were not notified. mateen did buy the weapons he used legally. president obama will be visiting orlando this week to support this community that has been suffering. we just saw a tweet from the fbi that their therapy dog will be comforting the victims' families today. michelle roberts, nbc bay area news. thank you, michelle. 6:03. members of the lgbtq in the bay area are refusing to retreat in

fear. dozens came together last night and you watched through downtown san jose. they lit candles at city hall memorializing 49 people who were lost. many say the shooting at the club where members of the community go to be free is frightening. >> the spaces that are safe for us and as women, for a lot of women it's hard to be out. those are places where you feel a little safer. >> marchers refuse to hide in fear. they are leaning on each other during this time of grief. police department says it will make its presence known in places where the community gathers, hoping to provide protection and reassurance. >> this morning we are getting to know the victims better through their loves ones. their stories are just emerging and will continue to emerge in the days that follow. luis worked at harry potter. j.k. rowling tweeted out, i

can't stop crying. eddie is being remembered as popular and fun loving. eddie justice was trapped inside the bathroom during that rampage. his mother learned yesterday he is among the dead. >> he said, mommy, i love you. in the club there shooting, that was at 2:06. trapped in the bathroom. downtown. police call police. i'm going to die. >> among all of this devastation and tears, there are stories of hope. one man was so badly injured, doctors mistakenly told the family he passed away. after four operations, he fights for his life. people around the world are rooting for him and the 52 others injured in that attack who are still recovering. a woman who lives in san francisco is close friends with one of the victims. she texted her best friend, an ex-girlfriend saturday night.

>> i sent her a text message and said, i miss you. she wrote me back. her last words were "i miss you, too." >> kimberly morris started working as a bouncer at that night club when she was killed. the two moved to hawaii together but parted ways when sheldon moved to san francisco for school and morris moved to orlando to be closer to her family. above everything, sheldon wants to make sure her spirit lives on. >> she is a wonderful person, a great spirit. always smiling, bringing joy to everyone around her. >> kimberly k.j. morris was only 37 years old. kris sanchez will have more personal stories of the victims in our next half hour. our coverage continues online at nbcbayarea.com. if you wonder how to help victims of the shooting, click on the tab in the upper right hand corner of our home page. 6:06. breaking news overnight.

a truck smashing into a home in san jose. this isn't the first time it's happened at this property or the second. sharon, you talked to the homeowner who says his home is constantly being hit. >> the homeowner has been in and out of the house. fortunately, he was not seriously injured. take a look at the damage behind me. he says this is pretty much the worst he's seen before. it's happened 19 times to his house. he lived here since the 1950s. the owner sans he was just heading to the back of his house around 11:00 last night when he heard this loud rumbling noise. he thought it was an earthquake but then neighbors started yelling. he realized it happened again. a truck crashed into his home near the jackson street exit off 680. he tried to prevent this from happening. >> putting the poles down. it tore off my fence.

i put my car here. the guy in the truck hit my car. >> fortunately nobody was seriously injured and police reportedly arrested the driver for drunk driving. sharon katsuda, today in the bay. we had a trend the last few weeks of steamy hot weekends and nice weekends. >> we better get ready for another one. >> we are still on this roller coaster where we have temperatures in the 60s and 70s expected today. this weekend, some areas will be back in the 90s. clear and cool. lunchtime temperatures will be in the 60s feeling nice for most of the bay area. north bay low 70s with a high of 75 today.

65 in san francisco. we'll have a slight chance of rain in the forecast on thursday. i'll tell you where and when will be the best time to see that. let's head over to mike now watching a crash now in sunol. >> another problem for 680. wayn i want to show 101. traffic starting to build here. that's the only section 101 in the silicon valley. out of sunol in toward fremont, reported. a crash in the center divide and possibly sticking out into the fast lane. that is a distraction. traveling down out of pleasanton in toward sunol. all this traffic where the arrow is, you see pleasanton slowing. that will be an issue until they clear that. farther north southbound 680 coming off highway 24, trying to clear those cars.

at a warehouse near downtown, at 6:13 on this tuesday morning, breaking news out of los angeles. live pictures of a massive warehouse fire happening close to downtown l.a. it knocked out power to thousands of people. you can tell by the size of it there you saw the thick black smoke as chopper zooms in to cover firefighters in the area, as well. there are more than 80 on the scene trying to control this fire. l.a. fire department says there is magnesium inside that building, which when water is put on it can produce massive fire balls. we'll stay on top of the story and bring you updates. 6:13. we have more photos of three people wanted by san jose police in connection with the assault at a donald trump rally. police released these photos and

are asking for the public's help. the men attended a trump rally earlier in the month and committed various attacks of violence. it was a crazy scene down there. so far, nine people have been arrested from the same rally stemming from assault-related charges. all of them are minors. police are looking for eight more people right now. this as investigators follow the trail of the gunman in this weekend's mass shooting in orlando. that is a new point of polarization for congress and presidential candidates. >> edward lawrence live in washington with a look at the fallout now. good morning. this is turning very political. fireworks inside capitol dome yesterday. members of congress actually protested on the house floor after a moment of silence for the victims in orlando. chaos in the house chamber. speaker paul ryan asked for a moment of silence.

that's when representatives walked out under protest. >> i could have passed legislation, but i decided to observe yet another moment of silence. that's not leadership. i'm not doing it. >> reporter: as the nation mourns for the orlando shooting victims in vigils across the country, including senator bernie sanders, law makers remain deeply divided. democrats want strict gun control bills to pass the house. >> we have to make sure that it is not easy for somebody who decides they want to harm people in this country to be able to obtain weapons. >> it's essential we stop terrorists from getting the tools they need to carry out the attacks. >> the presumptive republican nominee countered, saying we need to do more to secure america, adding omar mateen may have been born here, but his parents immigrated from

afghanistan. trump added he would lock down the border. >> i will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the united states. >> later this afternoon, members of congress will be briefed in a classified meeting about the terror links between omar mateen and terrorist group isis. live in washington, edward lawrence. back to you. thank you very much. here in california, law makers are scheduled to pick up the debate over tough new gun laws. last year san bernardino rampage sparked a series of bills, one could take a closer look at some of the bullet button on those gym assault rifles that allows people to take out the magazines more quickly than what the law would have attended. >> another would require background checks for people who buy ammunition. the proposed laws may have

unintended consequences. >> near term, the likelihood is sales will rise as people are concerned this law has the potential to restrict their ability to get a product they want. in the long term, there will be a lot of questions. >> california voters will decide on gun control measures this fall. many believe that measure is stronger now that the bills are being considered by legislature. a heavy news morning here. we'll continue to follow these stories. how about something a little more lighthearted? >> perhaps something out of las vegas this morning. the riviera came down last night. >> this is a point where we show you amazing video of the hotel. here is the view point from the helicopter as charges goes off then somebody turns out the lights or the lights fail. someone is in really big trouble in las vegas. apple's big show is going

off without a hitch. worldwide developers conference begins today in san francisco. i want to point out the women on the stage monday. more than any other time in apple history, four women, this woman runs apple music. she poked fun at the lack of diversity among software developers pointing out not everybody in the audience was staying on beat. talking about immigration in the news, let's point out the coolest person at apple was born in ghana. apple's watch will soon be able to call 911 silently for you by pressing a button and it will tell police where you are, who you are without the bad guy knowing that message went out. apple did as expected and opened up its siri voice to outside developers making it far more powerful. siri will be available on more products like mac. apple wants to catch up with

amazon which has a blockbuster hit with its echo device. that artificial intelligence comes at a cost. to work well, siri has got to talk to the computers back at apple. siri is back at apple. somewhere in cupertino. the concern is apple wants to keep everything private. they are huge on privacy but are concerned making siri more powerful. all of a sudden what you want is not staying inside your phone. there is a balance between competing with amazon but keeping the privacy. >> can we go back to the apple watch? there is a new button that allows you to dial 911. >> right. it's on the crown there. by holding a certain length of time it will say i'm an apple watch owned by sam brock. i am at this location.

it won't say why you're in trouble. it's a way of doing it without the bad guy seeing you go to your phone 911. >> thank you, scott. new video of a strong tornado. that ripped through north texas yesterday bringing with it sweeping hail and dramatic lightning strikes. drivers near amarillo were forced to stop and take shelter. parts of the texas panhandle are under storm watches and warnings through this morning as rain and hail continues to fall there. amazing there was no damage from that tornado. good news there. >> good thing it wasn't moving through a populated area. >> right. in the middle of nowhere. we are certainly populating outside these days. been nice weather. that will continue for a few more days. >> yes. feeling like spring. enjoy it a few more days until we officially hit summer time. it will feel like it this weekend as we get a live look outside at the golden gate bridge. a clear start to the day.

we are getting sunshine to start out. we will see more of the sun the rest of the day. this is what it feels like. temperatures in the mid 50s. let's drop in on the north bay and get a look at weather underground sites. 53 in dbelvedere. san francisco will be in the upper 50s for the next couple of hours. with all that sun, temperatures making it into the low 60s. we will have clear skies throughout the day. temperatures won't get out of hand. that strong ocean breeze keeps our temperatures in check. we'll stay in the lower 60s there. here is a look at wind speeds coming in from the northwest at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. stronger near the coast at about 25, maybe 30 miles per hour. it will still be breezy later on tonight with slightly cooler temperatures today. this cold front and area of low pressure stays along theos.

it will move closer thursday and bring in a chance of scattered showers. looks like we won't see much of that. most in the north bay. the possibility of maybe even about 1/4 inch for the north bay while the rest sees trace amounts of rain. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. let's head over to mike to see what's happening as you head through the maze. >> reason why it's called the maze. look over here. a maze of roadways, but they are moving well. manageable. typical backup toward the bay bridge off 580/24 interchange. we'll go to the right side. this is wall net creek. southbound 680 continuing to recover. chp has not begin the all-clear. speeds are improving. slow southbound 680 toward sheridan. quick look will end with this

everyone knows "stairway to heaven." starting today, it's the subject of a copyright infringement. members of the band spirit saying robert plant and jimmy paige stole the chords from a song of theirs. they once towered together. they are expected to take the stand to testify. "stairway to heaven" generated hundreds of millions of dollars. >> interesting to hear the beginning of the song. nbc bay area responds. a man had trouble with paint on his brand-new car. >> let's turn to chris with more. >> good morning. oliver nicholas concedes the yellowing on his white toyota camry is tough for others to see but after paying $32,000 he sees it and wants it fixed. an inspector confirmed the

world.. you're taking a live lookt a growing memorial outside just an overwhelming sense of grief felt around the world as we take you right now to orlando outside of the hospital there where is there a growing memorial. flowers and expressions of love, dozens of people still recovering in the hospital this morning. we are going to have a live report from orlando in just minutes. good morning, i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. the sun is up and shining. not too hot today.

>> it's going to be nice today. you'll want to take it in because we'll have more changes in the forecast for the next couple of days into the weekend. right now it's in the mid 50s across the bay area. all clear skies with sunshine today. breezy winds with highs in the 70s for inland areas. 60s along the coast and in san francisco. we'll take a look ahead to some rain that is possible in the forecast for thursday and warmer air this weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. let's head to mike tracking the san mateo bridge. >> i can't see anything specific, we see the cars slowing. almost to a stops werebound from the toll plaza across mid span. reports where the arrow is and dunbarton bridge may be a better alternate. reports that something is going on near the toll plaza. it's probably along the flat section. we have slowing out of pleasanton in towards sunol. activity in the center divide. in the south bay a burst of

traffic. we'll show more of that coming up. back to you. >> two days later and a lot of questions still unanswered after the massacre in an orlando night club enters another day. >> michelle roberts has been live in orlando. as the memorial grows at the hospital where you are, one of the shooter's former co-workers is speaking out about his rage. >> absolutely. we are learning more about the gunman as people mourn the loss of the 49 people who were killed. we are outside orlando health, the hospital many victims were taken to moments after the shooting. only a couple blocks away from pulse night club. that is an active investigation. take a look behind me. i want to show you this growing memorial as people have been stopping by this morning and yesterday to drop off flowers and candles and well wishes to the victims fighting for their lives.

investigators are continuing to interview the gunman's family, friends and former colleagues. in 2013, omar mateen co-worker reported him to the fbi as he made radical comments. there are reports he sent messages using a gay online dating site and he had been seen at pulse night club several times. the fbi will be looking for any clues at his apartment and on his cell phone. >> he would kick things and throw things and slam his hands down and have a violent outburst of rage. he always referred to every other race, religion, gender in a very derogatory, negative way. >> investigators have begun to recreate the crime scene using evidence and witness testimony to determine exactly what happened and if anyone else was involved in planning the attacks. federal officials do say mateen appears to be a home grown terrorist. if you want to help, there are several donation websites set

life. with all the technology we use, people were connected until their last moments. that was a snapchat posted by 25-year-old amanda alvear. you can hear the gun fire in the background. she died with her best friend. on the phone eddie justice was texting his mother. >> he said, mommy, i love you. >> the last time we spoke would be when he was in the club. >> what did he say? >> he said, i love you. i said i love you, too. >> she was in orlando celebrating her high school graduation. and a mother who beat cancer twice was no match for that ar-15. she had gone dancing with her 21-year-old son. he survived. she did not. he was with her when she died.

in orlando continues at nbcbayarea.com where you'll find the latest information as it gets updated minute by minute, including pictures and bios of the victims. 6:37, we are following breaking news in the south bay. here is a look at the damage left behind after a truck slammed into a home. it happened off south jackson off 680. the owner of the home says it's becoming a regular occurrence. it happened at least 19 times where a vehicle left the road and hit his property. his home has been hit four times. we have a reporter on the scene gathering information. a santa cruz teenager accused of killing his 8-year-old neighbor is scheduled to return to court this morning. he pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the violent death last july of maddie middleton. it happened in their apartment complex. investigator found the girl's body in a nearby recycling bin. he is accused of sexual assault

and due in court today for further arraignment. >> prompted by the stanford sexual assault case and heightened awareness of sexual assault on campuses all over the country, two state law makers are pushing for an expanded definition of rape. california law describes rape as an act of sexual intercourse. many states adopted the fbi definition which labels rape as p penetration with any body part. a juror in the case is expressing outrage to the judge about what he calls a ridiculously lenient sentence. a jury wrote a letter to the judge saying it seems you did not accept the jury's findings. we were unanimous in our finding of the defendant's guilt. turner will serve a maximum six-month sentence in jail but

heroism and survival as personal stories of the victims come to life. we remember and honor the lives lost. at 6:43, following breaking news out of los angeles this morning. take a look at live pictures flying high over the scene of a massive fire at a warehouse close to downtown l.a. it knocked out power to thousands of people. look at the size of it. more than 85 firefighters on the

scene trying to put it out from all angles. no injuries have been reported. l.a. fire department says there is magnesium inside that building, which when water is put on it can produce massive fire balls. we'll continue to stay on top of this story and bring you updates throughout the morning. as the memorial grows in castro for the orlando victims so does the discussion over security for the pride celebration which is coming up in less than two weeks. >> stephanie chuang live in our san francisco newsroom with more on the lawsuit being filed over safety concerns. >> good morning. the orlando tragedy shattered the sense of security and safety for some people. it put a spotlight on the issue of security for the upcoming pride celebration. in fact, people who say they were victims of violence at past pride events are suing for more security.

most recently a san francisco man in his 60s was shot in the arm after a fight broke out last year. there was a shooting. l.a.-based personal injuryç person ryan lapine is representing that man who is asking $10 million in damages. he represents an oakland man after a 2013 shooting at the civic center festival. pride says security is fine. lapine says there's been a pattern of violence and wants the same security they had at the super bowl events. talking barricades, metal detecting wands and bag searches. >> people trying to come out and shoot like what happened in orlando. people who can address this situation. >> there is a special place in hell for personal injury attorneys who want to use terror attack events to garner media

attention to line their pockets and their clients' pockets with money. >> a judge is set to hear the lawsuit. there was a different lawsuit filed by a man who was shot. scott weiner says he is meeting with pride organizers to make sure they do everything in terms of security. live in our san francisco newsroom, stephanie chuang, today in the bay. new details on the oakland police sex scandal. nbc bay area learned the contra costa county sheriff's department is investigating allegations of one of its employees had sex with a woman who tells the media she was a prostitute. she says she slept with 28 law enforcement officials. some of them while she was just 17 years old.

they include members of the oakland police department, richmond police department, alameda county sheriff's department, livermore police and someone based in stockton. a fifth oakland police officer has been put on administrative lead. is there a google car in your garage? hints that the federal government will make autonomous cars legal by next month. >> this will be fast for any organization but washington? they are looking here. new guidelines could be out by july. those guidelines could make it legal for private citizens to own totally automated cars or cars where automation was added later. there are some instances of automation out there already. tesla, but talking fully robotic. >> markets mildly lower. dow industrials down 10 points. that is jay leno ringing the

bell there. fed starts tuesday interest meeting. no chance they will raise rates. the british are considering leaving the european union. that caused something bizarre to happen in germany. interest rates for german government bonds have gone so low, they're actually negative. what's happening here is so many people in europe are so worried about their money, they are buying the safest thing they can find. it's german government bonds. germany is the biggest, most powerful stable government in europe. so much money flowing into bonds, government will pay you back less than you gave it. if you give it a euro we'll give you 99 cents back. that's safer than anything you can get on the european stock market. it's geeky, but super fascinating. >> this is coming from the

>> we have great weather today. it is cool as you head out. we have a lot of sunshine. it will be a beautiful day. take it in because we will have quite a few changes over the next few days. we are taking a live look at sunol. you see the sunshine there. make sure you have sunglasses. we also have sun along the coast as we get a live look at ocean beach. waves a little bit choppy there winds kicking up. it will stay breezy throughout the day. temperaturewise we have 50s. we drop into the east bay to get a closer look from our weather underground sites. 54 in dublin. it's 52 in lafayette. 54 in the north bay. winds coming in from the northwest. will turn more westerly as we go from this afternoon to this evening. stay up to 15 to 20 miles per hour. stronger along the coast. half moon bay. the sustained winds at 25 miles per hour. that will keep things choppy throughout the day. a look at all the microclimates.

no complaints about this. it will be in the 60s and 70s for all of us in the bay area. will be cooler along the coast. half moon bay 61. at&t park will be at 65. seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen shows temperatures will not stay like this. it will be heating up in time for the weekend. if you're heading out to at&t park, let's hope giants can do another game like they had last night. at 7:15 first pitch will be at 62. dropping back to 58 by the end of the game. we'll talk more about what to expect, another quick look at the forecast coming up. mike looking at the macarthur maze. >> why call it the maze? we have westbound 80. east 580. the roads are moving well. look at the san mateo bridge. still a little slow away us from.

this is typically where we see this westbound traffic building volume. we had an incident between the midsection and flat section over at the toll plaza. no details came in on specifics other than that. we have seen traffic slow down. the report is there was a dog running around. they pigged up the dog so this should start to move better. you don't see anything dramatic. that san mateo bridge looking slow. over here there is the tri-valley south 680. no big problems. a little build for 280 northbound. 101 south. over the hill all the way from san rafael toward the golden gate bridge. back to you. we go back to one of your favorite cameras. live look at the golden gate bridge. starting day evening commute lane adjustments are going to change slightly. some patterns tend to be earlier. four lane northbound evening commute will start earlier. at 4:00 instead of 4:30 p.m.

=sam/2shot= 6:56. welcome back. before we head out the door, here are the top stories on nbc bay area. >> new details out of orlando days after a gunman opened fire inside a crowded night club. michelle roberts has been reporting outside orlando at the health hospital with an update. >> reporter: the hospital will have a press conference in a half hour. we'll get an update about the victims who survived as well as talking to a couple of them who were shot. it's been a very busy 48 hours

for the doctors here. this is what's outside the hospital, a growing memorial with kind thoughts and words as people pray for the victims and their families. investigators have begun to recreate the crime scene at pulse night club which is a couple blocks away from the hospital. they are using evidence and witness testimony to determine exactly what happened. they will be continuing to interview the gunman's family, friends and co-workers. there are reports this morning omar mateen sent messages using a gay dating site and had been seen at pulse night club several times. federal officials say mateen appeared to be a home grown terrorist. yesterday his ex-wife spoke out about the abuse she endured during their marriage. >> he would get mad out of nowhere. that's when i started worrying about my safety. after a few months he started to beat me. >> kick things and throw things and slam his hands down and have
