now. >> a very good morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. >> i'm sam brock. >> laura garcia-cannon. >> it is noon, you may be able to grab a fleece out the door today. >> it's cool. to think we have rain in the forecast. not typical the time of year. but we will definitely welcome, especially that rain. it's freight degrees in the north bay, low 50s for the south bay in the peninsula. we get a little light in the sky. you see it's mostly clear there in the south bay with mostly sunny skies expected this afternoon. highs near 70. some mid- to upper-60s for the coast and part of the bay. i'll tell you what to expect. mike is tracking slowing now through fremont. >> i believe 100% of that slowing, the crew cleared. they were going backwards, clearing the construction zone. now it looks like that scene is clear. let's show you the map. overall the bay very good right

now. we had 880 both directions slow, those cones are cleared for the overnight road crew. look around 680 interchange, i'm go back and see what they have brewing so far, a little sheing showed up. a bay bridge shot as well. we'll send it right back to you. >> dark skies there, and red ones here. now to breaking news in the south bay, look at this fire. it consumed a strip mall in san jose, destroying several businesses. you can see the massive flames took firefighters hours to contain. "today in the bay" chris sanchez is joining us live from the scene with the damage that was left behind. chris, this was quite a battle. >> reporter: this was a very big battle for firefighters here, sam. it is an l-shaped building. it is older construction. the fire spread quickly. you can see behind me, firefighters on the scene here still putting water on some of the hot spots in that building.

it was raging, right around midnight. someone called it in. saying there was a fire outside that l-shaped building. but the fire was spreading quickly through the inside, through attic of this billing as well. it when to the four alarls. there were more than 110 firefighters. there were firefighters helping from the santa clara fire department as well. initially the firefight was to defend the building. then they had to try to contain it. defend the homes behind the strip mall and the gas station that is in this same very parking lot. it was two hours before firefighters could contain fire. then it was three-and-a-half total before they had it under control. battalion chief ivan lee says all but one business appears to be affected by water, fire or smoke. there are 20 businesses on the marquee of strip mall. anything from the restaurants hair and tattoo parlors. there is a pet grooming store, a karate place and pizza place.

there are hot spots on the scene, firefighters are dousing those with water t. bulk of the firefighters have gone. we did talk to the battalion chief who responded to the santa clara strip mall. he said this was smaller, but a rough fight this morning chris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> eerily reminiscent of that fire. it's a dark morning for san jose as the police department remembers a fallen officer michael katerman, an 11-year veteran of the force. thousands of officers gathered last night in his honor. >> he died from a violent crash in north san jose yesterday afternoon. >> he put the uniform on, left to go to work. wanted to see his family at the end of the day. >> police say the van had made a left turn in front of them. they collided him when his bike came to a stop about him.

>> he used the officer's police radio to call for help. >> they tried to do what they could to help. the officer was taken to the regional medical center, sadly later died. we are told the drive of the minivan is said to be cooperating, is not facing charges t. fallen officer leaves behind a wife and two children. we will have a live report coming up in our next half hour. >> a developable story out oak, where celebration of life quickly turns tragic when a 16-year-old girl is shot and killed. now this shooting happened around 5:30 at the corner of 13th and franklin in the downtown area right in the middle of a funeral. hundreds of people were gathered to remember two european e 15-year-old boys. both of them tragically died in

a water accident last month. as they were laid to rest, a fight broke out in the street. two young men walked into the crowd and started firing. four people were hit. >> i heard several shots, probably about six in a row. and then at that point i saw a bun of kid running. >> they were a group in the 1,300 block of franklin. there was a group, two individuals shot at the group, striking the victims and fleeing. >> one of the victims, a 16-year-old, regina jeffreys, she was taken to highland hospital, where she later died. police say the other three shooting victims are in stable condition. dragged by an alligator into a la began to at disney's grand floridian resort. we understand the boy and his father were wadeing in about a foot of water when the alligator came out of nowhere and attacked. it happened about 9:00 last night the boys mother and father tried to grab the boy from the alligator's mouth, they were not successful. 50 law enforcement officers spent the entire night searching the lagoon for the little boy. as you saw there, they're still doing so now. >> this is still a search and rescue of course. but we are very hopeful. we are hoping for the best. sometimes you get the worst. we're certainly hoping for the bes best. >> the family of five is from nebraska and they're vacationing at that resort. lawyer remarks sadly staying in that area, it has been a heavy week for the orlando community. now this morning, stories of survival w. rehearing more from the injured as they share

terrifying details from the shooting massacre inside the orlando nightclub as new details emerge on the investigation as well. "today in the bay" le anne greg is joining us with what we learned at this hour. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, the officials are considering whether mateen's wife should face criminal charges. they say she is cooperating. she has been staying with her father-in-law. as you say, we are hearing stories of the injured as this investigation moves forward. the gatherings continue. this one last night in orlando and supported the victims as we learn more about the man that caused this chaos. omar mateen lived about two hours from the crime scene in this port st. lucie apartment with his wife and their three-year-old son. she told federal agents she was with her husband when he bought ammunition and a holster, that she tried to talk him out of his

plans and once drove him by pulse because he wanted to scope out the club, where he would later kill 49 people and injure 53 other. >> i look over, he shoots the girl next to me. i'm there laying down, i'm thinking, i'm next, i'm dead. >> reporter: angel was shot three times, still hospitalized like many of the victims, patients carter among those held hostage in the restroom describe the moments when a s.w.a.t. team broke through and rescued them. >> they bust through the wall. they start engage physical gunfire, they told him, "put your weapon down! put your weapon down! "he didn't. so they continued gunfire. >> reporter: the community searches for answers. new information about mateen's possible state of mind. his father-in-law says he applied to the police academy but was rejected. he filed a complaint saying he was turned away because he was a

scandal. a string of accusations that's spread to other departments. they the demand to hold top city officials accountable. four bay area agencies have launched their own internal investigation. looking into whether officers had sex with an under aged girl. a girl says she slept with 28 police officers while she was working as a prostitute. she alleges some paid her while other officers tipped her off about prostitution stings. people outraged protested in oakland yesterday. >> it's a shame. it's a disgrace and they need to get out of our city. >> five oakland police officers so far have been placed on paid administrative leave as a result of this fallout. two resigned from the police force. an unnamed sheriffs deputy has been placed on leave. santa clara county jail facing another lawsuit.

a former inmate says he was severely beaten by guard in the main jail in san jose. julien vazquez says he has physical and emotional scars by a beating by at least two guards last september. he claims the guards accused him of giving attitude. >> the laceration on my forehead came from getting kicked. my head hit the cement and split opened. at the time i was being kicked so many times that i felt my face get warm. i thought, oh, shoot, i'm pleading. >> the former inmate's attorneys say the alleged beating took place last summer within a month of inmate michael tyree's death alleged-by-three guards. he was serving a sentence for an assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence conviction. they have investigating the allegation. 5 dlchl 26. coming up, breaking news we are following in the south bay.

about now on schedule. we are looking at the maps. >> that crowd did build just before they turned the lights on. we're looking at more slowing. this is the one we're talking about out of hayward into oakland. southbound from pary na boulevard, where i originally reported the crash. it sounds like it's closer to washington t. off-ramp sign it will read. the crash may still be blocking one lane there. crashes in fremont, moved to the shoulder, still a distraction. we'll talk about that in the south bay coming up, back to you. >> back to breaking news in the south bay, mike, we have been following all morning, flames consumed a strip mall, leaving behind a path of destruction. >> you have to see the video to understand the strength of this fire, several businesses destroyed inside a shopping area off santa teresa boulevard in san jose. that is where "today in the bay" chris sanchez has been there all morning. obviously, a calmer situation. this was a four alarm fire.

>> this is a four alarm fire. it's not completely out just yet. you see the ladder dousing water on the top of some these businesses in this l-shaped strip mall a. firefight here. there are homes directly behind that part of the strip mall. take a look again at what he was like as that fire was reported just around midnight. whoever called it in, says there was a fire on the outside of the building. what firefighters found is fire was spreading quickly through the attic space. it went to four alarms. there were more than 400 firefighters at the peak. this was a mutual case as well. they were trying to defend the homes behind part of the strip mall and also trying to defend the gas station that is in the same parking lot. the afc two-hour firefight, just to contain the fire. it was another hour-and-a-half after that bef the fire was

died from the crash. can you see here behind pe at the headquarters, some flowers have been left behind, including this bouquet, powerful moments also last night for the sjpd and fellow law officers, who along with san jose fire helped escort the body of the their-year-old father of two of san jose to the coroners office. about eight hours earlier around 4:00 in the afternoon is when he was on duty on his police motorcycle on north 10th street when a driver of a minivan made a left turn in front of the officer. they collided. his bike ended up about 100 feet away a. passerby tried to save him, using his police radio to call for help t. officer later died for help at the hospital. >> put his uniform on, left to go to work. he wanted to see his family when he got off. he didn't make it. >> reporter: a very emotional chief garcia there.

"today in the bay." >> thank you very much. we have few details now off of the case the santa clara county district attorneys office drops judge aaron per ski from a sexual assault case. this himcoing from the fallout of brock turner sentencing, the stanford swimmer who sexually assaulted a woman on stanford's campus and sentenced to six months in jail, a sentencing that some folks felt was too lenient. now at this point, if legal analysts say while they're seeking a new judge, it is allowed, kind of an unusual thing. >> it's clearly a response to

the da's displeasure with the sentencing that occurred in the brock turner case. they are now saying at least when it comes to sexual assault cases, we're not going to allow judge per ski to hear these cases. >> we should mention, sorry the da filed a motion of bias saying he does not believe judge per ski can be fair. many stanford students have signed a petition supporting the recall of judge per ski. >> that i say they applaud the decision, find an ad administrative judge to remove per ski from that case. >> now to the deadly mass shooting in orlando. we are learning the killer's wife says she tried to talk him out of the deadly attack that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. a high of 64 him mike is updating us on a crash in san leandro. how is it looking? >> a look over here, heading up towards the bay bridge. on the map, you see the same thing for the sensors. most of the bay, what you'd expect. we zoom in from marina boulevard through san leandro, you see how it's jammed up solid there. three left lanes are the update. that's getting enough equipment out there to move all the vehicles from the scene. so it should be another 20 to 25 minutes. just after 6:00 is when we look for those lanes to open. we will take you through the city streets, if you are east of the freeway. meanwhile the bay moves pretty well. we have that crash southbound 880 involving a motorcycle. nothing major there. we are looking at san jose as a burst of traffic hits, that's the only slowdown here. back to you. >> it looks like it's picking you up out there. coming up, an emotional kickoff for a day of baseball.
