overall, a nice start to what will be a cool day for the time of year. look now at san francisco, it's 54 degrees, highs today reaching 64 and 68 degrees in the east bay. we'll have a chance of rain tomorrow, yes, i said rain, i'll show you where and we'll take a look ahead to a sizzling weekend coming up. mike is now tracking the worst drive right now. >> the worst of the bay. look at this. this is san jose, lighter by comparison than normal wednesday. looking at the maps, you see the slowing. there is the silicon valley, zooming out the rest of the bay looks good, right there, there is a crash working southbound, your three left lanes are blocked. walk avenue, chp says, you are jammed up from davis treat. it basically is north and south of the area. it's an alternate for some. consider that remember the rest

of the bay moves very well. again, there is that south bay. pretty easy. back to you. >> thanks so much. not easy, one certain south bay neighborhood breaking news, recovering this morning. look alt those sky high flames. they devoured much of the san jose mall, crews are still off scene near santa teresa boulevard. >> that rose to a four alarm fire. today in the bay chris sanchez has been on the scene since 4:30 the morning. are they still monitoring hot spots? >> they are still monitoring hot spots. can you see one of the ladder hoses just stopped putting water on the rooftops of that building. now it's daylight, can you see some of the those businesses are completely burned to the ground. take a look at the voracious fire. it was reported near teresa and kahalan avenue. it was quickly spreading through

the attic space. the fire went to four alarms. firefighters were not only trying to contain the fire here. they were trying to defend the homes right behind one part of that l-shaped building. there is also a gas station here. clearly that could have been at that time strofk. it took two hours to contain the fire. three-and-a-half hours to get it under control. as you see, they're still out here this morning, a battalion chief says all but one of the businesses in that l-shaped building are affected by either fire, smoke or water. there are 20 businesses on the marquee, there are restaurants, there is a wine store, a tattoo parlor, a pet dprooming place, all will be affected today, only one shop on the far end of that l-shaped building is untouched by damage. there are still hot spots. we are not seeing direct impact from the fire department responds, however, there are

people slowing and taking a look at a yogurt shop, their favorite pizza place now burned to the ground. we can tell you, though, there are no injuries to report among the folks who work here or own the places here, also among the firefighters who responded as well. >> chris, thank you very much. it was a tough morning for those firefighters, many of whom had left an emotional tribute for a san jose police officer killed yesterday in the line of duty. six hours ago, hundreds of flashing lights moved through the streets escorting the officers body. "today in the bay" is live at san jose headquarters, where the department and the community are certainly mourning together. >> reporter: yes, a major load, really family. this is an 11 year police veteran of this force t. death of michael katerman, a big impact here. you can see some flowers,

including a bouquet left here at the department. more importantly, he was a husband and father of two kids, a heavy moment for officers just after mid-nit when they with the help and flashing lights escorted his poid from the regional medical center of san jose to the coroner's office. police say earlier around 4:00 in the afternoon, he was on duty on his police motorcycle on north 10th street when a driver of a minivan made a left turn and they crashed, sending his bike 100 feet away. the police chief is in touch with the family. >> they are groveing. they are unbelievably strong. they have very strong faith. they're strong for each other. >> now, a passerby did try to save him, giving first-aid and using his police radio to call for help. his funeral arrangements are set

to be announced this week. then again, there is still this task of finishing this investigation into the collision from the officers. police say the minivan driver by the way, he stayed on scene and has been cooperating with investigators. live this morning from san jose police headquarters. >> such a huge loss, thank you very much. we have been following breaking news this morning from florida from orlando. more dramatics now, a desperate search continuing for a two-year-old boy who was drowned by an alligator in a la began to. this tragic story began last night about 9:00 eastern time t. boy and his father were wadeing in a foot of water when the alligator came out of nowhere and attacked. the boy's father tried to grab his son from the alligator's mouth. he wasn't successful. 50 law enforcement officers spent the entire night searching

that lagoon for the little boy. they are still searching right now. >> this is still a search and rescue oechgs. still a search and rescue operation. we are very hope. . we are hoping for the best. sometimes you get the worst. we're certainly hoping for the best. >> that alligator is believed to be somewhere between 4 and 7-feet long t. family of five is from nebraska. they were vacationing at that resort. laura. >> it's hard to believe, yet another incident in orlando. certainly a heavy week for that community there. as the investigation into the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history is now shifting to the wife of the gunman, norah salman says she tried to talk her husband out of the attack. at one point, she drove her husband to the pulse nightclub to allegedly scope the place out. "today in the bay" le anne greg live in orlando with new angles of this investigation and where it's going from here.

>> reporter: laura, federal officials are considering whether mateen's wife should face criminal charges. they say she is cooperating. she had lived two hours from the crime scene with her husband and three-year-old son. she told officials she was with her husband when he bought ammunition and a holster used in the attack. she says she drove him be i the bar so he could quote scope it out. she says she tried to talk him out of his plans. so it remains to be seen whether she will have to face charges. they certainly are talking to her about. that they are talking to her family members who live in northern california. they spent about two hours or less than two hours speaking with them. also the investigation is continuing. they're collecting more evidence, it's moving forward. >> reporter: gatherings

continue. this one last night in orlando, in support of the victims. as we learn more about the man who caused this chaos. omar mateen lived two hours from the crime scene in this for the st. lucy apartment with his wife for ra salman and their three-year-old son. she told federal agents, she tried to talk him out of his plan and she once drove him by pulse because he wanted to scope out the club. he would later kill 49 people and injure 53 others. >> i look over. he shoots the gun next to me. i'm laying down. i'm thinking, i'm next. i'm dead. >> reporter: he was shot three times. still hospitalized like many of the victims patients carter among those held hostage in a rightroom described the moments when a s.w.a.t. team broke through and rescued them. >> they bust through the wall and they start engage income gunfire. they tell him, "put your weapon

down! put your weapon down!" he didn't. so they continued the fun fire. >> reporter: they continue their search for answers. new affection about mateen's state of mind, his father said he applied to the police academy, a life long dream, he filed a complaint with the florida department of law enforcement and he was claiming that he was turned away because he's a muslim. from orlando, lee ain grag greg, back to you. >> hard to know where he is coming from. we spoke to two victims with the gunman inside the pulse nightclub t. people you see here, so many faces. some of their lives cut so tragically shomplt but they were son, daughters, members of the military, dancers, partners. the youngest had just graduated from high school. to read more about their lives, they're so interesting.

on airplanes .. will soon be applied to almost all san francisco city-owned vehicles. >> the same concept behind black boxes like data recorders on airplanes, all san francisco owned vehicles supervisors approved that plan yesterday t. goal is to track city vehicles and perhaps pre vent pedestrian deaths by encouraging safe driving. now we said almost. the law does not currently aploo i to law enforcement vehicles, but supervisors right now are working out plans to extend the law to could have those vehicles, too. >> meanwhile, a federal court order has given the go ahead for a new challenge. >> a nice topic, net neutrality. scott mcgrew, supreme court? >> we talked about net neutrality. on one side, silicon valley says all data should be treated equal

on the internet. we have interservice providers. let me take you back to last february. that's when the fcc passed rules to treat public utilities. they have to follow certain rules an one of those rules was they have to treat all data the same, net neutrality. internet providers took the fcc to court over there, on tuesday, they lost t.fcc won. now, honestly, it's currently nothing changes for you, but it does protect the internet. at&t says it will appeal to the supreme court. comcast is a part of that lawsuit. it's on at&t's side. san francisco's one kings lane has been sold to bed, bath and beyond. one kings lane was a high flyer t. store chain says it didn't pay much. in fact, it was immaterial to finance, they said. wall street, waiting on aannouncement from the feds as

it does feel cool in spots. talking upper 40s knew in santa rosa. in pal lo alta, it is 53 degrees. oakland starts out the morning at 56 degrees. a look at all the microclimate temperatures. 71 in gilroy, halfmoon by a, 66 degrees. at&t park 62 today, oakland up to 68 degrees. also skate in san money, taking a look at that seven-day forecast, the temperatures will be going up after the next couple of days. so enjoy the mid-day game at at&t park, the giants first pitch at 62 degrees. mostly sunny skies, temperatures low 60s through the game. we will be tracking our next weather system. that could bring in a chance of rain, starting early tomorrow morning, that's where the bulk of the rain will be, the measurable rain. it starts out during that morning commute. it may move into san francisco, by the time it moves into the south bay, a lot of rain will have dried up by the afternoon.

something we'll be tracking and really unusual for the time of year, especially when you look at the rainfall stills, showing up to the possibility of a half of an inch of rain in santa rosa. in the farther south you go, there will be lesser rain amounts. but looking at these temperatures, we go from cooler than average to welabove average by the weekend and into early next week. we could be hitting low- to mid-90s by monday and tuesday. so take this in as we enjoy some cool temperatures now, looking ahead to the weekend. temperatures in the 60s and 70s by friday. a warming trend begins on friday, much warmer on sunday. some spots will be hitting the uper '80s to lower 90s. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. mike, hoping for some improvement through san leandro. >> i think we will get that, the bottom of the screen. you see a little slowing.

overall the bay shows a lighter volume, it should give us a little chance to ease up. even over in the tri-valley, no major slowing here from 580 off 680 and pleasanton. but over here, we're watching southbound 880 out of san leandro. they start to tap on their brakes. by the time you get to the marina, it improves, washington and 230 the scene of the earlier crash, which cleared about 15 minutes ago. easier flow of traffic. no you the volume heads down towards the san mateo bridge. keep that in mind. meanwhile, over towards the bay bridge, we have a smooth drive. the metering lights are on. i'll show you as well. i'm talking about a lane shift and a time shift, starting a half an hour earlier in the afternoon. they maximize the city towards the north bay. keep that in mind as well. no problems, folks heading over here, anyway, because of summertime months bring a lot of folks to this beautiful bridge.

nobody was hurt. her live report coming up in 20 minutes. >> many of the firefighters had left an emotional tribute for a san jose police officer killed yesterday in the line of duty. just hours ago hundreds of flashing lights moved through the streets, escorting officer michael katerman's body from regional medical center. >> "today in the bay" at police headquarters, where the department and community are all mourning together. >> reporter: good morning, can you hear the grief of the police chief, you can see that someone else, just in the last two minutes, left another bouquet of flowers here, in honor of michael katerman, an 11-year veteran of this force. there was a long line of police officers and san who sigh firefighters laying their respects as well. powerful moments, they hemmed escort the body of the

34-year-old husband and father of two in the regional medical center of san jose to the coroner's office. police say it was roughly eighty earlier when katerman was on duty on his police motorcycle riding on north 10th street when a driver of a minivan made a left turn and they collided. his motorcycle ended up 100 feet away. they gave him first-aid, using his police radio to call for help. he died later at the hospital. >> he put his uniform on, left to go to work. he wanted to see his family when he got off. didn't make it. >> reporter: chief garcia says he spoke with katerman's family. says, while they are grieving, that i are an incredibly strong group with strong faith. his funeral arrangements are set for this week. the cameraman is cooperating. he has not been in custody, as the investigation continues, a tougher task than usual for some of these officers here in san jose. live this morning at the headquarters in san jose, "today

in the bay". >> steph, thank you very much. it turned tragic. when a 16-year-old girl shot and kille killed. >> reporter: they do, police believe it was a fight among men the chronicle reports a dispute over a dice game that resulted in the two men pulling out their guns, starting the fire, you can see they hit and blew out the windows here at the lotus restaurant at the corner of 13th and franklin. they hit four people who reports they had nothing to do with the argument. one of those people was regina jeffreys, a 16-year-old girl who later tied at highland hospital t. three other people shot are if stable condition. jeffreys had been around the corner at a memorial service for two teenage boys who had drowned last month.

she and a small group of those mourners ended up here in front of the restaurant on 13th and franklin. it was around 5:30. she was tragically caught in the cross fire. >> i heard several shots, probably about six in a row. then at that point i saw a bunch of kids running. >> there were a group of people in the 1,300 block of franklin and there was a group or two individual that shot each of the group, striking the victim and then fleeing. >> police have yet to catch the shooters. regina jeffries and about 2340u6789 mourners were attended a memorial. both best friends and 15-years-old who died in a water accident over the memorial weekend. reporting live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> truly saddening, bobble, thank you very much for that report. 6:36. new details in a story we have been following for a while.

off the case. santa clara district attorney's office has blocked judge aaron perski from another sexual assault case. this comes following fallout after brock turner sentencing, he is serving a six-month sentence the d.a. filed a motion of bias saying he does not believe he is capable of being fair in these cases, legal analysts say seek a new judge is quite unusual. >> what's clearly a response to the d.a.'s display with the sentencing that occurred in the brock turner case that i are now saying at least when it comes to sexual assault cases, we're not going to allow judge perski to hear these cases. >> since that sentencing, many stanford students signed a petition for the recall of judge perski, they applaud the decision by the administrative judge to move him from a new case. fears and heartache stretch

across the country. some of the clues are leading investigators to the bay area and the former home of the gunman's wife. >> "today in the bay" lee anne greg is live. we understand while mateen's wife knew her husband was planning some type of attack? >> reporter: that's right. at least that's what she told federal investigators, which is why they considered to file charges. she talked with them and told them she was with her husband when he purchased ammunition and a holster used in the atam. she says that she drove her husband to the bar so he could scope it out ahead of the attack. she also said she begged him not to go through with his plans. as you mentioned, they were in the bay area talking to her family. that's where she's from. her father and other relatives, that meeting took a little less than two hours. we are learning more about mateen's possible mental state. his father-in-law said he

beetle by two guards last september. he claimed the grdz accused him of giving them attitude. >> the laceration on my forehead came from my head hit the cement and it split opened. at the time i was kicked so many times i felt my face get warm. i thought, oh, shoot, i'm bleeding. >> the former inmate's attorney say the alleged beating took place within a month of michael tyree's death allegedly by three yards. vasquez was serving sentence for assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence convictionles. the santa clara county office is investigations the allegations. the santa cruz teenager set a trial for adrian gonzalez, he is being charged for the murder of maddie middleton last july. they say he beat and sexually assaulted his 8-year-old body

and proceeded to put her body into a recycling bin. if convicted, he faces life if prison. looking for cash, even though he received billions. >> we're not exactly sure, why uber needs so much money. as you point out, it got millions and millions just last month from the kingdom of saudi arabia and the reason we don't know why is uber is a private company. it says it doesn't have to show us its financials. we know it costs money to expand, find new drives. it does subsidize some markets where drivers are getting money from you and uber as well. so word on wall street this morning is uber will seek another $2 billion in loans by issuing bonds, technically, they're junk bonds, they pay out nicely, 5% or. so the problem is because ub certain private, you can't see their financials when you make your decision as to whether you'd like to invest.

day, we will have some mostly sunny skies. temperatures are a little cool in the north bay. it's 49 degrees in santa rosa, 52 degrees in san jose. some showers tomorrow. very unusual for june. we will see measurable rain, mostly for the north bay, as it moves to the south during the morning commute. a lot becomes a little more scattered. it dries out with lesser amounts of rain from san francisco and farther to the south. so looking ahead on how much

rain we could see the possibility of a half of an inch of rain in santa rosa, that would be amazing. then as we see elsewhere, trace amounts of rain, maybe a tenth or .2 of an inch from half moon bay. after that, temperatures get hot. in the tri-valley, here's a look at pleasanton, about average on saturday, sunday it jumps up to 90 degrees, 94 degrees on monday and it looks like most of next week could be pretty hot. enjoy this weekend the cooler temperatures on friday, saturday up again, reach noose the 70s and '80s. we could be pushing 90s for the inland valleys on sunday. and that warming trend continues. i'll have another quick look at the forecast coming up let's head over to mike now, still tracking gusty winds at the bay bridge. >> we have a clear drive across the bridge, a clear view as well, a camera shake to it. we are looking at the maps. we see slowing down the east shore freeway from the top of

>> welcome back. it's been a busy morning in the area. >> chris sanchez is at the scene of a fire that scorched a number of businesses there, chris. >> yeah, a number of those businesses are completely gutted. you can see all the way to the back fence the firefighters stopped putting water on what was a very stubborn fire, several hours after it was reported. it was reported initially as a dumpster fire, outside of the building, when firefighters arrived, they realized it had spread into this l-shaped strip mall. most of the businesses that are a part of this stril strip mall have been affected by the fire, water or smoke t. firefighters were trained to not only contain the fire to the strip mall. they have defended the home behind and the gas station that's here in the same parking lot. in all, it was about three-and-a-half hours before the fire was under control. it was a four alarm fire.

there were more than 100 firefighters here on scene. the chief says they are trying to determine the cause of the fire. >> hundreds of flashing lights moving through the streets of san jose, escorting michael katerman's body last fight. the officer was on duty on his police motorcycle when a minivan making a left turn crashed into h him. >> that crash remains under investigation. funeral arrangements will be announced later this week. the chief, his voice quivering, talking about what happened yesterday. we'll have much more in the hours to come, also, organizers at city hall. san francisco leaders will be meeting with members of the
