shallow water near disney world's grand floridian resort when he was grabbed by an alligator. let's get right to gabe gutierrez, who is in orlando. good morning to you. >> the active search operation is underway. what began as a family vacation quickly turned into horror. one father desperately trying to wrestle his 2-year-old son from the mouth of an alligator. overnight a frantic search, 50 officers combing a man made lake for a 2-year-old boy snatched while on vacation at disney world. >> the 2-year-old male child has not been located. this is still a search and rescue operation. >> just after 9:00 tuesday night police say the father and son from nebraska were near the edge

of the lagoon when an alligator when the father entered the >> the father entered the water and tried to grab the child, was not successful in doing so. at some point i'm told the mother may have also entered the water. so the parents diligently tried to get the child. >> reporter: there have been at least 41 unprovoked major alligator attacks in florida since 2010. >> everyone here at the walt disney world resort is devastated by this tragic accident. >> reporter: police say no such attack has been recorded at the lagoon before. no nuisance alligators have been reported. >> we have an alligator trapper on the water. >> reporter: there were signs warning visitors not to swim in the lagoon. >> as a father and grand father we are going to hope for the best in these circumstances, but based upon my 35 years of law enforcement experience we know

that we have some challenges ahead of us at this time. >> authorities have taken four alligators from the lake, but no sign of the boy. it's been a difficult few days. late last week and the massacre on sunday and now this. it's diflts for everyone involved. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. >> there is like a swimming pool area and then a sandy area. you not supposed to swim and there are signs posted there. >> it is absolutely shocking. we want to bspokesman for the sheriff's office. our hearts go out to this family and what they must be going through right now. what have they been able to tell you about how this happened, what the circumstances were. >> it was just after 9:00 last night when we received emergency

call from this area. this child was playing in shallow water. about a foot or so into the water. he heard what i understand was a splashing sound. he looked over and saw his son literally in the mouth of an alligator. he quickly moved towards the situation, tried to grab his child from the gator's mouth. i believe he received some sort of laceration on his hand or arm and was not strong enough to pull the child out of the alligator's mouth. the alligator swims away. disney had a number of boats in the water at the time. fish and wildlife brought boats into the area. our boats were brought in. helicopters were sent to the air. dive team was brought out. at least 50 people came out here at some point last night to try to find and rescue this child. what we have is a rescue and recovery operation going on. it's just a tragic, tragic situation. >> obviously trying to spot the

alligator and using sonar. >> trying to use sonar to locate anything to give us some indication of what is down there. hopefully today with bright florida sunshine and a larger boat out here we will get some sign of what is down there and hopefully be able to make a rescue or recovery at some point today. >> is this an area that was known to have alligator sightings? is this an area that alligators are known to be frequently in? >> there are no signs of any alligator nuisance in the past, no alligator attacks in the past so it appears this was a very isolated, freakish kind of incident. we looked back in the past. there's been no sightings in the past for attacks in this particular area, nothing. >> the parents of this little boy, i hope they are getting

some sort of counseling and care. >> we have victim advocates and counselors with the family. they have been with them all night long and are going to stay with them. we have our top people here. my understanding from what i have been told is that they are shaken up as you can imagine. there are people with them right now and will remain with them. >> thank you very much for taking time this morning. appreciate it. >> you're welcome. >> officials in orlando also dealing with another major investigation, the pulse nightclub massacre as nbc news first reported the gunman's wife told the fbi she once drove him to the club. officials are considering whether to file criminal charges against her. we will begin our in depth coverage with stephanie gosk. >> reporter: this morning the

wife of gunman omar mateen has not been charged with a crime and for now is said to be cooperating with the fbi. together with their 3-year-old son she and her husband are seen smiling in this facebook photo. now the 30-year-old ducks from cameras and media questions. >> did you know your husband is a terrorist? >> reporter: mateen's wife told investigators she knew about the plan even driving him to pulse nightclub at least once to scout the scene. she also claims she tried to talk her husband out of it and failed. she was born and raised in northern california. on tuesday fbi agents visited her family's home there. one neighbor said she had not seen the young woman in years. >> after she married and left i have no idea what kind of girl she is.

all i know that she was a very good girl. >> reporter: in a conversation tuesday mateen's father offered little information about his son's wife. he did reveal more about his son's state of mind saying mateen applied to police academy and was rejected. >> i worked very hard to put him in the police academy. >> reporter: the florida department of law enforcement said mateen filed a complaint saying he was turned away because he was muslim. reports that mateen had been to pulse several times. his first wife was asked if she felt he had gay tendencies. >> i'm not going to lie, i questioned it in my head when i was with him. >> reporter: federal authorities are trying to piece together what led mateen to gun down club goers early sunday morning

showing little emotion and no mercy. patience carter and her friends. >> i could see my best friend on the floor and looking lifeless. i was like i don't think i'm going to get out of here. >> reporter: in a bizarre twist, blood bank confirms omar mateen donated blood on may 29. in the first 24 hours after the shooting in orlando there was an urgent cry for blood donations. >> thank you very much. let's bring in pete williams, more information on the investigation. i am not a lawyer so i need you to help me with the legal criteria here. if you are with someone who tells you they have plans to commit a crime like this, if you take them to the spot where they are in some ways casing the scene or the target, if you are with them when they buy ammunition does that qualify you as an accessory to the crime? >> perhaps not an accessory but

she could be charged. i would be surprised if she is not. according to officials here is what she told the fbi, she drove him to the pulse nightclub at least once maybe more because he wanted to check it out. she tried to talk him out of terror attack. here is new information. we are told that on saturday night the night of the shooting when he left the house he told her he was going to go visit friends. she told the fbi that she feared he was going to go shoot people at the pulse nightclub. even though she had that fear she never called the police to warn them. the fbi isn't sure whether what she is telling them is true, whether she did try to talk him out of it. she could face charges and here is why. under federal law it is illegal when someone fails to tell the police that a crime has been committed. in this case the crime would be

mateen's planning to attack the nightclub and his preparations to carry out in essence attempted murder. >> the planning and knowing about the crime of planning. i guess the question for investigators is not just whether they should charge her but when. it sounds like she is still talking and cooperating. >> that is a big concern and that is why they say they are in no rush because on the one hand she has the potential liability herself. on the other hand she has the best information about him, she is the closest person to him. it is the decision about when to charge. even if federal authorities decide not to charge, the state could certainly bring charges by itself.

>> pete, real quickly, does she have any cover in the story from the ex-wife about how he was an abusive husband, controlling husband. can she go to authorities and say i feared for my life and safety if i crossed him in any way? >> i haven't heard that she has said that. i suppose that would be something that would help in her defense if there were ever a trial y. don't think that would stop authorities from bringing charges if they are going to do it. they have to decide whether her story is true and check it out and decide whether to file charges. >> thank you very much. now to another aspect of this tragedy, the political story. donald trump pushing back hard against president obama and hillary clinton after they criticized his rhetoric in response to the shooting. peter alexander following that part of the story. >> reporter: following comments after orlando, donald trump's really increasingly becoming a man on a political island facing

a fierce round of coordinated attacks from president obama and hillary clinton but finding fewer and fewer defenders even within his own party who have his back. a fiery president obama delivering an unprecedented rebuke of the republican nominee. >> where does it stop? >> reporter: attacking donald trump. >> we don't have religious tests here. >> i watched president obama today and he was more angry at me than he was at the shooter. >> reporter: trump defiant tuesday night still implying the president is sympathetic with terrorists including the suspected orlando shooter. >> that's the kind of anger he

should have with the shooter and killers that shouldn't be here. >> reporter: hours earlier telling the ap the president continues to prioritize our enemies over our allies and for that matter the american people. trump teeing off on hillary clinton. >> she plays the woman card more than any human being i have seen and frankly i don't think women like her from everything i see. >> reporter: clinton joining the president in an attack on trump. >> what donald trump is saying is shameful. >> reporter: the two democrats echoing one another tearing into trump's insistence they use the words radical islam. >> is donald trump suggesting that there are magic words that once uttered will stop terrorists from coming after us. >> reporter: president obama trying to turn trump's rhetoric against gop. >> do republican officials agree with this? that is not the america we want. >> reporter: growing unease with trump's response to the orlando massacre. >> i continue to be discouraged by the direction of the campaign and comments that are made. >> reporter: the house speaker and senate majority leader

ducking new questions. >> i'm not going to spend my time commenting the ups and downs and in betweens by the comments. >> i'm not going commenting on the presidential candidate today. >> reporter: this morning a new poll shows major decline for donald trump trailing hillary clinton nationally by double digits 49% to 37%. that's not even the worse part for trump. an overwhelming 55% of those polled say they could never vote for trump as well as 63% of women say that they could never support him. >> peter alexander, on the politics, thank you. we are joined by nicole wallace and mark halpern. we have hillary clinton and barack obama going after donald trump. how important, how effective do you think this strategy is going to be? >> big and effective because in

part what president obama said yesterday most republicans would quietly agree with. not only is donald trump being double-teamed but doesn't have a posse to protect himself against some of these more charges of both president obama and hillary clinton. >> you are starting to see the chickens coming home to roost in terms of what he said about the judge and perhaps orlando. only one day of this poll would have captured what happened in orlando. what are republicans saying? >> i called a few republicans who have been through campaigns and they said they are surprised the numbers aren't worst. the trump campaign is experiencing its low point. we talked during the primary no one clenched the nomination without near death experience. he is experiencing his near death political exercise in the general. >> the poll did say that he would be better on terrorism than hillary clinton would be.

>> and certainly you see in campaigns in current media culture the impulse to say this is a disaster, he will never recover. this is a critical period for the campaign. republicans across the country are looking for him to turn things around not in a few days but today quick. >> any reporting on the discussion between hillary clinton and bernie sanders in that hotel last night? what did sanders want? >> he knows that he is at the end of the road but does want to use the opportunity to try to change the democratic party in fundamental ways, how they pick nominees, what they stand for. i think the clinton folks are relieved that this is not the family fight that could divide the party right now. >> i think he had a lot more leverage two months ago when he could have gotten out and didn't. now that you have elizabeth warren and president obama come to such strong and vibrant life in the fight against donald trump bernie sanders looks late to the party. >> thank you both.

[ cheers and applause ] 7:30, wednesday morning, we say good morning to a happy crowd on the plaza. >> back inside the studio a look at today's headlines, the presidential primary season has wrapped up with a win for hillary clinton in district of columbia. clinton met with bernie sanders in washington last night, a conversation that focussed on unifying the party heading into the general election. authorities are considering filing criminal charges against the wife of orlando gunman omar mateen. this morning pete williams reporting that she told investigators her husband said he was leaving to meet friends

saturday night but she suspected he was going to carry out his attack. she also said she drove mateen to the pulse night club on at least one previous occasion. a 2-year-old boy from nebraska has been attacked and dragged into the water by an alligator at disney world's grand floridian resort last night. joining us now is nick wylie, executive director of florida fish and wildlife conservation commission. good morning. >> i know it is a difficult morning. how do you even go about trying to find this alligator? >> you are right, it was a tough morning, a tough night. we searched throughout the night. we had a lot of resources searching. we are using all kinds of

technology to try to find this child. we've got very expert professional staff with orange county sheriff's department. we are putting everything we can into this to try to find the child. >> is this a large area? are there a lot of alligators? what are you and your team doing? >> it's a lake. the water body is a lake that has a lot of canals attached to it. i wouldn't say there are a lot of alligators. there are a number in the lake. we are just going to have to keep looking until we find it. >> i understand you have already taken several alligators out of that body of water over the last several hours. can you talk to me about that process and what had to happen to those alligators? >> well, our process is to go ahead and any alligators we have to take those alligators out and we will have to check them out. we will have to sacrifice them

for the investigation. and we are just going to have to look for evidence of any indication that they might have been involved. it takes trained investigators sometimes to really detect what is going on there. it is really a process. we are going to look at everywhere we can until we find evidence and find the alligator and hopefully the child. >> isn't it something that strikes you as rare in terms of alligator behavior for an alligator to approach a child in this shallow water? >> this is rare and unusual. we are puzzled and shocked by this. millions of people come and enjoy florida waters every year and it is safe. this was just a rare occurrence and we are trying to understand it. hopefully we will have answers. >> i don't mean to put you on the spot but given what you know about this incident, the time that has passed, the water you are searching, do you hold out

that is pretty horrific. >> reporter: survivors flooded orlando regional medical center. >> almost every person i called in i said this is not a drill. this is not a joke. we have 20 plus gunshot wounds coming in. >> we would proceed with operative intervention, whatever was needed and then would literally walk from that operating room to another operating room and do it again and again. >> reporter: the rampage wasn't quite finished. >> i was able to peek over and i can see him shooting at everyone. >> the gunshots were still going off rapidly. it is still not real to me yet. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. officers rescuing hostage after hostage. >> they pulled me out. i couldn't walk. the s.w.a.t. team member dragged me out by the grass. >> dragged me out while i am getting cuts.

>> reporter: the shooter finally killed. the scope of the carnage shockingly clear. >> three more trauma alerts. >> we got word that there would be another 20 to 25 patients continuing to come. and that's when the second wave started to come and it was basically a repeat of the first. >> reporter: dozens of lives would be saved, incredible resilience on the front lines during a seemingly endless night of terror. right now the latest hospital update is that 33 shooting victims are being treated at two hospitals. one of the doctors at the hospital behind me cautioned that six of those are critically ill and wouldn't be surprised if the death toll went up. >> stories are unbelievable. thank you. in the wake of that mass shooting law enforcement agencies as you might expect are reexamining how to process tips and hopefully stop terror attacks in the future.

kerry sanders has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it sounds so simple, see something, say something. but what if the person you suspect of being a lone wolf terrorist is a family member or a close friend? would you have the courage to make that call? gunman omar mateen was already on the fbi's radar, three times agents followed leads but never went further. >> there were informants sent to speak with him based upon what the fbi knew at the time there was nothing further for them to pursue. >> reporter: there lies the conundrum. police in the united states cannot arrest somebody for simply saying something or legally buying guns. in boston, in san bernardino at fort hood authorities say if someone had seen something and said something it might have prevented those lone wolf attacks. in orlando, sources within the fbi say the gunman's wife noor

zahi salman was aware of the plan, went with her husband to buy ammunition and a holster and drove him by pulse nightclub at least one time. she tells them she tried to talk him out of doing anything. >> the reality is when someone self-radicalizes there is almost always something close to that person in a position to see the signs. >> reporter: that might be easier said than done. some fear of hurting their loved ones. others worry about facing repercussions themselves. hours after the orlando attack former worker told anyone who would listen that he knew mateen was a ticking time bomb. gilroy explains why he didn't take the next step. >> because he hasn't committed a criminal offense. >> reporter: what do you know would have happened? >> they write information report which gets logged into a

database and stays there forever. that is what happens. there is no crime. we don't prosecute something unless there is a crime. >> reporter: gilroy says more than a year ago he raised concerns about mateen with his employer but the security company released a statement late tuesday night saying there is absolutely no record of dan gilroy making any complaints about omar mateen. so what signs should raise red flags? research or training with guns or explosives, using multiple cell phones or staying away from friends or family and showing interest in violent extremist beliefs and propaganda. if you see suspicious activity you should call the local police department. it could be a matter of life and death. >> kerry sanders, good information. we will take a turn. carson introduces us to the grand mother being called

tamron and natalie. an awful story, so awful i think if you are a parent and you have a kid around maybe outside the room for a minute. >> it has been a very -- our hearts go out to everybody in orlando. this has been about as bad a period of time for one city to have absorbed. from friday to tuesday. >> and all very different. this one is last night a 2-year-old boy was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator at the disney world resort. the boy and his father apparently wading at the edge of a man made lagoon, disney's grand floridian resort when an alligator attacked the boy. the father entered the water, tried to grab his son but was unsuccessful. there were signs apparently warning visitors not to swim in the lagoon. police say there have not been

previous attacks at this location. a spokesman said everybody at the resort is devastated. authorities caught four alligators in the hours after the attack and still looking for this one. i don't know what to say. >> they were in shallow water according to the report, just a foot of water. >> wading in the water. >> and we have been there. we have seen the property. this is not in an isolated area. this is in the heart of the disney property. they have a little shuttle bus if you stay at the hotel and take the bus and shuttle you along hotel to hotel. this is in the center of all of that. >> earlier on "today" we had official on in charge of the search. they talk about how they have never had in the history of the resort anything like this, never sightings of alligators. as we heard them say they were searching for alligators and
