francisco shutting down several streets as police look for evidence. the latest on two victims in a live report. >> my first sense was jump out of my truck and help out. >> he did everything he could. the man who rushed to the side of a dying san jose police officer sharing his emotional story with us. bay area bracing for rare june rain. kari hall breaking down how the long wet weather could stick around. a very good thursday morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> a second ago dots of green on the radar. how will that affect us today? >> it will start out mostly later on this morning as we see rain in parts of the north bay with mist and drizzle, but not a lot of measurable rain as yet. we can see there's some activity there that will start to work

farther to the south throughout the morning. temperaturewise, we are now in the mid to upper 50s as you step out the door, grab the umbrella in the north bay, san francisco, and in the peninsula we could have a spot shower moving through quickly. elsewhere looks the same, mostly dry but cool, well below average temperatures. it ramps up with high heat this weekend. i'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike is tracking the problem for fremont drivers. >> that is unexpected, the amount of slowing we are seeing. >> southbound 880. we have only one lane open westbound. looks like the transition ramp is open. just that slow lane. that jams up from highway 92 there to union city boulevard is

a good option. you see the rest of the bay shows a lighter flow of traffic. >> 6:02. we are following in san francisco where police are investigating a double shooting in the city's busy mission district. >> steph chuang joining us. she's been at the scene all morning long. what are police telling you about the third shooting in four days in the mission? >> reporter: it's been violent here in the mission. two people were shot earlier in the 2:00 a.m. hour. a tow truck took away a car that was parked there. you can see broken glass there on the ground likely from the driver's side window getting shot out. that car was the focus of the investigation all morning long. police confirming again two people shot. we have video of the ambulance taking away those victims. those people were alive when first responders took them to sf general. what is not clear is what

condition they are in now. we did see about a dozen of investigators here a few hours this morning. we could see the driver's side window broken, shot out. this is the latest string of violence within a few blocks of the mission. the third here in about the last four days. late sunday night a man survived getting shot in the face after an argument. after tuesday morning at 20th and shotwell, a man died after he was shot there. there were no arrests at that time. there have been no arrests after this morning's double shooting as well. police officers rely on camera footage and witnesses to help in their investigation. we do know being about a block away from the 16th and mission b.a.r.t. station there are quite a few people around late in the night or early in the morning. what is unclear is if anyone was

a witness and cooperating with investigators. stephanie chuang, today in the bay. >> thank you very much. only on nbc bay area we are hearing from the good samaritan who did all that he could to help a san jose police officer who was hit and killed by a minivan driver. here is the man's call to 911 as he tried to save officer michael katherman. >> he is laying down and badly hurt. ambulance right away. >> it's been hard to sleep. when you see something this tragic and a fallen officer, and all they do for all of us. >> dan sullivan struggling with the loss of officer katherman. a minivan driver struck the officer as he was riding his squad motorcycle tuesday and sullivan picked up the man's radio and called dispatch to let them know what was happening. today marks one year since the tragic balcony collapse in

berkeley that killed six young people. lawsuit and legislation have been set in motion since that time. last night friends and family gathered to celebrate the young lives lost. father mcbride believes coming together can ease the pain for victims' family and friends. >> the first anniversary is always difficult. you know, if you lose a parent, the first -- someone loses a child, it triples the pain. >> one year later, berkeley has implemented new balcony construction and inspection rules. city leaders say more than 400 balconies are being repaired or have been repaired as a result. 6:05. the latest on the terror in orlando. the city devastated by the deadliest mass shooting in american history will get a visit from president obama and vice president biden today.

both leaders will meet with survivors and families of the victims. most importantly, the lgbtq community. the president will visit with first responders and hopes to offer comfort on behalf of the american people. the focus remains on the killer's wife. investigators are now saying the gunman omar mateen told her he was going to visit friends saturday and she feared he would attack the club. she pleaded with him not to do anything violent but never called police. as the investigation moves forward, the fbi is asking the public for help. >> regardless how small that information may be, i want to hear about it. >> 25 survivors remain hospitalized this morning. six are listed in critical condition. today in the bay leanne gregg is in orlando and will join us with

a live report at 6:30. another east bay official on administrative leave because of a sex scandal that reached several bay area police departments. this time it's rick orosco, a retired oakland police commander and inspector for the alameda county d.a.'s office. a self-described prostitute says she slept with more than 20 police officers from various bay area departments. more drama at oakland police department. a different scandal prompted the mayor to fire the interim police chief who was on the job about 120 hours. paul figeuro will step in to lead the department. >> it was during a background investigation schaaf says she discovered he is far from the right fit to lead the department. >> information i received raised concerns for me about whether he can effectively lead this

department at this particular moment in time and during this critical transition. >> mayor schaaf did not give any indication about what led to her decision but the chief of b.a.r.t. police did issue a statement offering more insight and suggesting he was involved in an extramarital affair more than a decade ago. he now returned to his former job. 6:08. we've got change in the forecast today. more changes coming this weekend. it is good to see rain moving into parts of this area. we'll see measurable participation for parts of the north bay. looking at showers moving closer to sonoma county now, and as that continues to move in, we will get a better coverage of rain across santa rosa into napa for the early morning into the afternoon. once again the rest of us may not see that. we'll talk about that chance and

warmer weather for the weekend. let's head over to mike advising folks to consider the san mateo bridge. >> that's right. typically the bridge has a heavier volume than the dunbarton bridge. the reason i'm suggesting that instead of the dunbarton bridge coming out of hayworth, oakland. 880 is a nightmare right now getting to where that crash. it had a one car spunout but blocking three rains. only the right lane gets by. you see all that red from highway 92. it's easier getting up there out of fremont. oakland had an earlier crash by the coliseum that cleared. a's play today midday. there will be some traffic. and the warriors' watch party tonight. up next, we have the latest on the alligator attack at disney world as the family of a

he was pulled by an alligatorç dragged into a lagoon at disney world grand resort. crews found his body yesterday. he had been playing in about a foot of water tuesday night when the gator, believed to be between four and seven feet long popped out and grabbed him. lane's father and a lifeguard tried to snatch the boy back but couldn't get him. there are signs saying "no swimming" but none warned alligators could be lurking in the waters. >> should there be signs warning "beware alligators?" >> one thing they'll work with is florida wildlife commission to make the determination what are the best practices they can employ. >> crews removed five alligators from that lagoon but not the one they say responsible for the attack that. service for lane is taking place in his hometown in nebraska.

>> no words can describe how horrifying that is. egyptian officials zeroed in on the wreckage of the egyptair jetliner that crashed last month in the mediterranean. u.s. vessel under contract by the egyptian government identified several main locations of the wreckage. there is still no indication if the black boxes have been recovered. 66 people died in that crash. opening statements begin in the federal criminal case against pg&e and deadly pipeline explosion that forever changed the lives and landscape of one peninsula city. bob redell joining us live from the neighborhood touched deeply and personally boo this tragedy. >> good morning, sam. it's been almost six years since that pg&e pipeline blast deviled the neighborhood here in san bruno. that natural gas firestorm killed eight people who live here, destroyed dozens of homes. many homes have been rebuilt, but there are a few lots that

remain empty after all this time. at the federal courthouse in san francisco, jury selection is expected to wrap up and opening statements to begin in the federal criminal trial against pg&e for its role in the pipeline blast. the utility has been charged with 12 pipeline safety violations and one charge of obstructing a federal investigation. the prosecution alleges that pg&e intentionally did not properly test its pipelines nor keep records. feds call it corporate culture of prioritizing profits over safety. pg&e pled not guilty but if convicted on all charges could face a fine more than $550 million. the trial is expected to last about eight weeks. earlier the year state regulators hit pg&e hit them with a penalty connected with this explosion.

a lawsuit filed here in bay area court. >> that's right. the legal experts i talk to say the suit has an uphill fight because of safe harbor. that protects websites from what its users do. if i say something on twitter, that's on me. the father of paris terrorist victim went forward with the suit. his lawyers know about the safe harbor so the suit actually accuses facebook, twitter and google of enabling terror. all three websites do delete such content when they know about it. case in point, the man who murdered a french policeman and his wife this week used facebook live as he held the couple's 3-year-old son hostage. things are happening so fast on these sites, there is so much happening, it's getting very

difficult for the site to manage all that content. in northern california court, "wall street journal" says the lawyer representing uber drivers is offering to take $10 million less in fees. some uber drivers think their lawyer settled too early. >> i'd love to show you video of an explosion but the live cameras on the spacex barge couldn't handle the explosion as the falcon rocket tried to land there. they just froze up. the impact knocked the signal offline. spacex will recover the recorded video and we'll show you a video of the explosion. they failed to land. they have satellite in orbit.

approaches from the north. you can see all those clouds over the bay bridge into the rest of the day we should see mostly cloudy skies. a live look at healdsburg. we'll see measurable rain today. right now there's not a lot to it. we are seeing spotty light showers. models show we could see this starting to fill in for the north bay. moving into santa rosa later on this morning, early afternoon and hit or miss showers for the rest of the bay area. not everyone will see this rain, especially farther south you are, the potential of not seeing rain at all. we'll be watching the north bay for rain as we go into today as well as this evening. rainfall totals may reach up to 1/4 inch in santa rosa. very unusual for this time of year. elsewhere, very trace amounts of rain if you get anything at all. we'll see a mix of sun and

clouds. breezy winds. palo alto 65. outer sunset into the upper 50s with slight chance of rain there and better chance of rain in the north bay and east bay, mostly cloudy skies reaching into the upper 60s. in time for that watch party later this evening. winds coming in the northwest 10 to 15 miles per hour. temperatures in the low 60s. after we catch this nice break from the cool temperatures, we will have cool temperatures. it starts to warm up. we'll be right at average in the tri-valley on saturday with a high of 81. look what happens on sunday. up to 91. 93 on monday. next week looks like it will be sizzling all week long. enjoy this break we are having for today as well as tomorrow. we'll start out the weekend at 77 in the south bay. 81 then up to 89 sunday. that will mean pool or beach weather as we start to turn those air conditioners back on.

overnight in the mission. so far no arrests. this happened on 17th street between mission and valencia street. victims were rushed to sf general where they underwent surgery. we are waiting word on their condition. this marks the third shooting in the last four days in the mission. steph chuang will bring us a live report in 20 minutes. in a matter of hours, president obama will land in orlando to pay his respects to the victims and their families in the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. leanne gregg is live in orlando. >> reporter: good morning. officials say they've gotten a large number of tips that they are following up on in this investigation. they are recreating the crime scene, reaching out to anyone who knew the gunman and the whole investigation is

it. not the filibuster but discussion how to get to this vote on gun control. what happened while you were sleeping, 14 hours yesterday, overnight into this morning, mostly democrats, a couple of republicans and independents joining them talking about how to prevent things like what happened in orlando. the measures they'll be voting on now are universal background checks for gun shows and internet sales and the so-called no-fly, no buy law which would prevent people on the no-fly list from buying weapons. donald trump weighing in saying he wants to sit down with the nra to talk about it. the national rival association says they are open to doing that. all these law makers are talking gun control, they failed to enact it in the past. we'll see if anything is different this time around. the supreme court could have its say in the gun control debate. justices will hear a challenge

against connecticut's assault weapons ban. it's being challenged by a gun rights group. the law was passed in 2013 after the sandy hook mass shooting. since 2008 the high court refused to overturn any state gun control law. they could make the final ruling on a lawsuit calling for safety in next weekend pride in san francisco. a decision on the lawsuit is in limbo. pride is a huge weekend with over a million people expected to attend. it is a memorial that just continues to grow this morning for the san jose police officer who was killed in a crash earlier this week. this as we are hearing more from the man who tried to save officer michael katherman's life. kris sanchez with the emotional story you'll only see on nbc bay area.

>> good morning, sam. it's safe to say this good samaritan is haunted by the fact he was there to offer assistance as he fell but it wasn't enough. you can hear the distress in his voice as he calls for help. >> ambulance right away. >> reporter: that is the voice of dan sullivan who saw the crash happened and immediately jumped to action. he stopped and used the officer's own radio to call the dispatcher for help and started doing cpr. a day later dan sullivan showed up to pay his respects, drop off flowers in honor of officer katherman and find semblance of peace for himself. >> it's been really hard to sleep. when you see something like this tragic and a fallen officer, all they do for all of us, it's

tough to take. really tough to take. >> overs katherman was a family man, father of two young children. this is video he, himself, shot of the unity tour in washington, d.c. which is a motorcycle ride to honor fallen officers. tragically, the next time around those officers will ride in honor and memory of this 11-year veteran. a memorial service is still in the works. the officers will follow his body to the funeral home where the funeral will happen later. new this morning, another scare for a san jose police officer after a crash. this happened just about two hours ago in south san jose. a police cruiser collided with another vehicle no one was hurt in the crash. san jose police have not

released details how it happened. a $50,000 reward and national campaign is bringing renewed hope to catching a brutally violent serial rapist, burglar and murderer. that suspect is known as the east area rapist and terrorized california communities throughout the '70s and '80s. investigators believe the killer is still alive. about 60 to 75 years old. he committed 12 murders, 45 rapes and more than 120 burglaries. this morning we are hearing from one of the victims who does not want to be identified. >> if they catch this guy, they should lay him on the floor and let everybody he raped get to do whatever they want to him. that's what we should get to do. we should get to do what we want. >> if you have any information on this case, the fbi is asking you please contact them. happening now in santa barbara county, highway 101 has been shut down in both

directions due to this growing wild fair. it started yesterday. more than 1,100 acres burned so far with zero containment. that's up from 200 acres late last night. flames are fuelled by deep tense terrain and heavy winds. many homes have been evacuated. much different scene in the bay area as we are going to see light rain falling later this morning. >> we will see that rain moving into the north bay later this morning as a fairly strong storm system this time of year continues to move closer. we haven't seen much rain yet. a look at point arena. you have mostly cloudy skies. futurecast shows the radar filling in by 12:00 or 1:00 today. mostly for the north bay. we'll take a look at what the rest of the bay area can expect. that's coming up in less than 10 minutes.

mike is tracking the changes for the commute in hayward. >> i want to get a quick look here. this vehicle pulled over to the left shoulder across the san mateo bridge. changes coming out of hayward, more folks heading there avoiding the dunbarton bridge because of that crash. the san jose area north 101 and north 87 showing early slowdown. heavier than we might expect. we are looking at the golden gate bridge. easy drive from the north bay to the north bay. smooth drive and clear view across the span. coming up, toddler snatched by an alligator at a popular disney world resort. many pointing the finger at disney saying it didn't do enough to keep guests safe. a candy company says maybe you're eating too much candy.

"mercury news" reports judge aaron persky went on vacation yesterday three days earlier than planned on the heels of prosecutors having him removed in another sexual assault case. persky has been under fire since he sentenced brock turner to six months in jail as opposed to up to ten years this prison for sexually assaulted an unconscious woman on campus. he could have sentenced brock turner to ten years in a state prison. 6:45. a special service will be held today in honor of 2-year-old

lane grave. the toddler was killed when grabbed by an el dwightor pulled into a lagoon at disney's grand floridian resort. the attack has many asking whether disney is doing enough to warn guests of the possible danger in nearby waters. good morning. state authorities work with disney to remove newsian alligators more than four feet in length. the debate is exploding. should disney have done more to prevent this and parents pay more attention to the no swimming signs or should disney have again them more warning. parents are starting to post videos of people going right up to the waters here and disney shut down its marine and beaches due to safety concerns until further notice. some say the theme park should not assume its out of state guests realize there are so many alligators in florida.

it's estimated they are up to 2 million alligators in this state. disney says that alligators in this state are a fact of life and they are in their habitat. we should note alligator attacks are extremely rare. the last known bite here was 30 years ago. that child survived. the local sheriff here says he believes that disney will review its policy. back to you. >> gabe will have a full report on the ç"today" show in a few minutes. the world is getting a look at what we think are the documents stolen from the democratic national committee. >> they purport to be the opposition research on donald trump. the question is, are they authentic? >> and is the hacker who posted them authentic? you can find the documents online. at first glance they seem to be authentic. i've never seen confidential research. what's interesting here, it was

posted by a person who claims to have worked alone and they dispute claims it's the russians who hacked the dnc. dnc does say it was hacked. the security company says the hackers were tied to russians. it has the makings of a political thriller. are the documents we are seeing real? is the russian acquisition wrong? or was it the russias and hacker they created fake? you mentioned a theory the hack didn't exist that the democrats deliberately leaked the documents to make mr. trump look bad. there is that question. i'm surprised the markets are moving as much as they did. dow down 100 points. nasdaq down 20. the fed left interest rates alone. we are awaiting next week's

here is a look at the top stories on the nbc bay area. >> breaking news. steph chuang in san francisco. >> good morning. a shooting sent two people to the hospital early this morning in the 2:00 hour. you can see glass debris on the ground here likely from a shottout window of the car. earlier this was the focus of this investigation. we have video of the ambulance taking away two victims. police confirmed this morning both people were alive when first responders took them to sf general. it's not clear what condition they are in now. we saw about a dozen investigators for a few hours focused on the parked honda civic using flash lights, taking pictures to gather evidence. this is the third shooding in the mission in the last four days. just a couple blocks away. a man survived getting shot in the face after an argument. police arrested the suspected
