7:02 am
story. of course, the latest developments. let's start with our top story, politics and this push for stronger gun control. it's taken on new urgency in the wake of the orlando shooting. the democrats led a filibuster on the senate floor that stretched into the early hours of the morning. peter alexander is watching it for us. peter, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. senate democrats say they have had enough. commandeering the senate floor for hours lasting into the early hours of this morning to drive home their call for stricter gun laws. new today, check out the front page of "the boston globe," this editorial, giant picture of a rifle along with three words "make it stop." democrats on the senate floor overnight with a long filibuster, highlighting the republican-controlled congress' failure to act on guns. for nearly 15 hours, dozens of senators led by chris murphy,
7:03 am
who represented newtown when he was a congressman, the scene of a horrific mass shooting at an elementary school in 2012. >> they were designed to kill as many people as possible, and that's why you see this epic rate of slaughter when they are used inside schools, inside nightclubs, inside churches. >> reporter: afterward, murphy saying a compromise had been reached with republicans, allowing votes on whether to ban people on the terrorist watch list from buying guns and expanding background checks at gun shows and through internet sales. >> i'm going to save your second amendment. >> reporter: donald trump joining the debate, insisting lives could have been saved in orlando if clubgoers had been armed. >> you would have had a situation which would have been always horrible but nothing like the carnage that we all, as a people, suffered this weekend. nothing. >> reporter: hillary clinton arguing against trump's response to the massacre. >> so not one of donald trump's reckless ideas would have saved
7:04 am
a single life in orlando. >> reporter: reiterating her own stance on guns. >> we do need to stop terrorists from getting their hands on the tools to carry out attacks so easily. especially assault weapons. >> reporter: trump now signaling an openness to new restrictions that would ban people on the terrorist watch list or the no-fly list from buying guns and calling for a meeting with nra leaders who remain opposed to the idea. the challenge remains getting it through congress. just one day after the san bernardino attack, 54 senators. including all but one republican, rejected a bill to block suspected terrorists from legally buying guns. this morning, new signs that tide may be shifting. pennsylvania senator pat toomey proposing a compromise, cracking down on suspected terrorists while adding protections for those mistakenly on the terror watch list. >> let's figure out how we achieve this. this is not rocket science.
7:05 am
let's figure this out. >> reporter: senator toomey among those for proposing new legislation this morning. this morning marks the one-year anniversary of the donald trump presidential campaign. this date a year ago when america watched him coming down that escalator at trump tower. it also marks a new beginning for hillary clinton, with a multi-million dollar ad blitz. some of it going right after trump in eight battleground states. matt, savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. let us bring in chuck todd. chuck, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> what we saw on the floor of the senate over the 14 hours of the filibuster, was it just theater,o did it signal a real change in the politics of this? >> i think what you've seen -- this has been a slow shift now for the gun control side of this debate for a while. what you saw yesterday -- and i think it was more than show -- is that democrats and those on the gun control side using terrorism as a way to get better attention for gun bills.
7:06 am
and i think that they have found -- you know, the terror argument has been a way to overcome other issues in the past. republicans have successfully exploited terrorism as a way to get things passed before. i think on this democrats have found a way to get the attention of swing voters when it comes to the issue of guns by connecting it to terrorism and the terror watch list. look, republicans now are changing their rhetoric. they're basically trying to say, hey, we agree, too. here is our bill. now their bill is very weak, but they've already got many republicans at least shifting rhetorically. >> that gets to my next question that donald trump is going to meet with the nra about the no fly, no buy policy. is he getting ready to buck the nra? >> i think his instinct -- if you look at him in the past, he has been supportive of gun control measures before. although, trump contradicts
7:07 am
himself a lot on various issues. i don't think he has got the political capital to force the nra. if he looked like he were more competitive in this presidential race, if he looked like he had a good shot at being president -- right now he's politically very weak. maybe things could change. i think he could have some influence on the nra. right now i don't think the nra sees donald trump as somebody that's going to be perhaps signing bills any time soon. so, i don't think they feel as if they have to listen to him. >> chuck, thank you very much. new developments in the investigation into the pulse nightclub shooting in orlando. this, as president obama and vice president biden head there today to pay respects to the victims. stephanie gosk is following that story for us. steph, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. the fbi is looking at the hours, days, months before this brutal attack to piece together omar mateen's every move. talk to anyone who had any contact with him and try to determine what drove him to it.

now they are asking the public for its help. today president obama and vice president biden will travel to orlando to meet with victims and their families. meetings like these that are closed to the press have become tragically routine, newtown, charleston, san bernardino, and now here. this morning, the fbi put out this poster, asking for any information about the shooter. >> omar seddique mateen who, like the director, i will not mention his name again. we need your help in developing the most complete picture of what the shooter did and why he did it. >> reporter: investigators put an end to recent speculation. omar mateen, they say, acted alone, despite some clubgoers' beliefs there was another shooter. no indication that mateen was considering another target and no proof that he scoped out other gay clubs. >> oh, my god. people are getting shot.
7:09 am
among the key pieces of evidence, cell phone, damaged after a water main break during the raid. he downloaded extremist propaganda, sermons by al qaeda leader anwar an alaki and videos of beheadings. mateen made multiple calls during the attack including 911 and a local news station where an unsuspecting overnight producer picked up the line. >> i'm the shooter. it's me. i'm the shooter. >> reporter: now footage of the shooter on shift as a security guard has surfaced. >> they want more disaster to happen. that's where the money making is. >> reporter: caught on camera by chance about the bp oil spill in 2010. >> everybody is just out to get paid. >> reporter: six weeks later, this security guard would be responsible for the worst mass shooting in history. there are still no charges in the case. mateen's wife has told the fbi she knew he was planning something, according to law enforcement sources.
7:10 am
30-year-old noor zahi salman claims she tried to stop him saturday night as he left the house. mateen told her he was just going out to meet some friends. overnight, nbc news spoke with one of the wife's childhood friends who said the couple met online in 2011 and married in california. she said in recent years her friend seemed happy and never spoke about any abuse. she said the woman she knows would never have been involved in this. also today, a senate committee is asking facebook ceo mark zuckerberg for his help to track what they say are at least five facebook accounts that may have been linked to the gunman. back to you. >> stephanie, thank you. want to turn now to that horrific alligator attack at the disney world resort. with the body of 2-year-old lane graves now recovered, wildlife officials are now focused on finding the alligator that was involved. nbc's kerry sanders is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt.
7:11 am
this morning, trappers will be back here searching for the gator, unsure if the five they've already captured includes the one that attacked. >> an alligator! an alligator! >> reporter: this morning, this video, shot by a guest at a wedding at the grand floridian resort just weeks before the attack appears to show an alligator in the same water where 2-year-old lane graves was attacked and then dragged to his death. his body found intact after a desperate 16-hour search. >> we recovered the remains of the 2-year-old from the water. and that body has now been turned over to the orange county medical examiner's office for an autopsy. >> reporter: deputies say the boy was with his dad, matt, wading in the water a foot from the shore. his mother, melissa, and their 4-year-old daughter were nearby on the sandy beach. while there is a sign prohibiting swimming, noticeably absent, signs warning of
7:12 am
alligators. >> we will look at all the protocols and signage going forward. >> reporter: disney president and ceo bob iger offering his condolences. as a parent and a grandparent, my heart goes out to the graves family during this time of devastating loss. my thoughts and prayers are with them. still, visitors expressed concern over the lack of adequate warnings at a beach where swimming is restricted but has lounge chairs and is adjacent to the hotel pool. >> my little granddaughter and my daughter herself when she was little played in that area. they never pulled people away saying you can't be here. >> i didn't see any signs. if we would have seen signs, i know myself and my kids would have gotten out of there if it mentioned anything about gators or danger. >> reporter: the happiest place on earth now with its first alligator death in 45 years. disney is now reviewing its signage policy. but going forward, they recognize they also have a challenge. visitors come speaking hundreds

7:16 am
the challenge now to find this vehicle. using remotely operated vehicles. find the wreckage, locate the other black box and bring that to the surface. it will contain the conversations between the pilots inside the cockpit, the flight data recorder should contain more than 1,000 pieces of information on the plane's performance and any technical issues. hopefully that data will help investigators determine if it was a bomb that brought down the plane or some sort of a serious mechanical issue. the last automated computer messages from the plane included overheat and smoke warnings. then the computers failed. this is still very much a mystery. guys, back to you. >> a race against time. tom costello, thank you. today on capitol hill, lawmakers are focused on isis and cia director john brennan says isis militants are training and planning to deploy operatives to more attacks on the west, relying more on guerrilla-style tactics. he calls the orlando attack a
