house bringing a signal pole. you don't see how big these are until they are down at ground level. there is plywood on the house where it smashed into the house. all this missing a 5-year-old boy by feet. his parents and their best man were gathered to look at pictures from their wedding which was just three weeks ago. the suv crashed with another car in the intersection of lafayette and lewis. the suv then hit a signal pole, a fence around the yard then smashed into the little stucco house itself. 5-year-old max was sitting on a couch with his parents' best man when they saw headlights in the window behind them and glass flying everywhere. >> it happened quickly. i think the biggest, easiest way to explain it was it was like a bomb went off outside. it's a miracle we only came out

with minor injuries. it's eye opening. we don't let our kids play in the front yard because we know this is a busy corner of the intersection. >> that dad patrick paul says they moved away from the suv in the living room at just the right time. moments later when that signal pole fell into the house as well and that could have been catastrophic. the family and friend went into the hospital to have pieces of glass removed from the body. emotionally, dad is really upset because when he came out he saw the two people in the suv stumbling around, slurring. he believes they were drunk. santa clara police arrested at least one person. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank you. everybody saw this, right? game six, the nba finals. steph curry getting kicked out. people are furious. there was a lot of drama

alliance and transit advocacy group called state muni. they echo prior claims that the arena could create traffic gridlock around the new ucsf hospital. the team has plans in place to solve those traffic concerns. the hospital takes no position in the matter. 6:07. opening statements begin this morning in the criminal trial against pg&e and deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. eight people died. 38 homes were destroyed when a major pipeline ruptured back in 2010. the utility is facing 12 separate criminal charges involving pipeline safety, including shoddy record keeping and failing to properly inspect its lines. there's also an obstruction of justice charge for allegedly lying to investigators. another possible step today in the sierra lamar murder case. both sides will be back in court trying to settle on a trial date. three weeks ago garcia torres

waived his whiright to a speedy trial. sierra disappeared four years ago walking to a school bus stop. her body has never been found. >> serial burglary suspect napped on the peninsula. he returned the morning for more. it happened yesterday morning on roberto drive near the 101-92 interchange. the man staying at the house says he came home wednesday night to find all the doors wide open. around $10,000 worth of jewels and other items were gone. when the burglar returns, he was there and chased the suspect cowan the street. instead of taking down the thief he talked to him. >> give me my stuff back. he keeps asking me not to call the cops and begging me not to do anything big. but this guy robbed me. >> he called 911 and the suspect was arrested.

u.s. senators rise to the moment and do the right thing. next monday the senate is expected to vote on several gun control measures. >> this comes after senate democrats held a 15-hour filibuster that forced republican leaders to consider the vote. the senate will take on four bills, two from democrats, one filed by dianne feinstein. they call for universal background checks and stopping sales to people on terror and no-fly lists. the other two bills were filed by republicans. they would delay sales for 72 hours but require a court order to permanently ban gun sales to someone. many experts believe this is irrelevant because none of those bills are likely to pass. >> is going after the second amendment how you stop terrorism? no. that's not how you stop terrorism. >> house speaker paul ryan says he's more focused on stopping terrorism. republicans hold the majority in the house and the house would have to pass these bills, too. they don't plan any votes on gun control measures.

area, including the south bay where the temperature is now 58. east bay 62. as we get a closer look from our weather underground sites, 52 as you head out santa teresa and saratoga starts out at 53. as we break it down hour by hour for san jose, 65 at 9:00. a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning and lunch time. nice 74. we'll be reaching into the upper 70s to low 80s there. as this system fades, that's brought in scattered showers for the north bay, it continues to bring in clouds for now. then we'll have mostly clear skies throughout the weekend and more of an offshore flow that will warm up our temperatures. enjoy this evening out at the county fair. it will be 72 shortly after sunset. wind coming from the west at about 5 to 10 miles per hour. after this nice break and near average temperatures for today, as well as tomorrow, it really starts to warm up on sunday.

police officeris welcome back. 6:24. the family of a homeless man shot and killed by san francisco police officers is filing a legal claim against the department. police shot the 45-year-old in april after he threatened people with a knife. it happened in april in the mission district. officers first used bean bag rounds but he wouldn't back down. his family says the officers acted recklessly. a judge says there is not enough time to order the beefing up of security for next weekend's san francisco gay pride parade. the judge yesterday tossed out a lawsuit calling for more security in the celebration. violent crimes have happened during recent pride events. people who filed the lawsuit say other pride events around the u.s. have more security. sf pride organizers say they are working on more security after that mass shooting in orlando. 6:25. bay area responds and puts money back in viewers' pockets.

for the south bay. we'll check on 101. take a look at this. an suv that plows into a santa clara home, narrowly missing a young boy. look down at the ground there. that is like a traffic light that came crashing down. the suv crashed into another car at levett and lewis, the suv hits the signal pole. the pole smashes through the house itself. 5-year-old boy sitting on the couch with mom and dad saw headlights through the window behind him. glass flying everywhere. he will be okay. kris sanchez spoke with the family and will tell you how max got out of the way before all that came down coming up in a live report at 6:56. 6:31 right now. it's been nearly six years since a pipeline exploded on the peninsula killing eight people, leveling dozens of homes.

in just a matter of hours, opening statements in the criminal trial of pg&e will get under way. share katsuda live in that neighborhood. >> good morning. we are seeing a lot of people out this morning walking their dogs getting on with their days. definitely their mind is on this trial. jury selection wrapped up yesterday and community leaders and survivors are expected to be at the court for opening statements today. eight people died and 66 people were injured in this 2010 explosion. pg&e faces charges of obstruction of justice and pipeline safety violations. if convicted, pg&e could be fined $562 million. the national transportation safety board determined the explosion was caused by a defective steam well in a pipeline segment that was incorrectly listed as seamless. pg&e in a statement said it

wants customers to know it's focused on the future and regaining trust with customers. you can see there are a lot of construction projects going on. new homes in this area. everyone wanting answers in this trial. that starts today with opening statements. live in san bruno, today in the bay. new allegations of criminal misconduct against an oakland police department employee. mayor libbey schaaf issuing a statement saying an unidentified department employee is on administrative leave. in this case, it is not related to the recent sex scandal that slayed that department. no word what kind of misconduct it was or what role that employee serves. the case is in the hands of prosecutors. 6:33. police say a sting in the school parking lot led to a teacher's arrest in palo alto. investigators joined force wes a

student who claims her teacher committed sex drims against her. ronny farrell, a science teacher is accused of groping a student last week. the 15-year-old says he touched her inappropriately and placed her hands inappropriately on him. palo alto pd worked with the girl to set up the meeting in the parking lot. he was arrested. the school district is helping. >> the safety of our students is a priority for the school. >> farrell is on unpaid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. more police on the streets of san francisco mission district after a violent few weeks that left three people dead and five others hurt. the victims were shot while sitting in a car. they remain in critical condition. the shooter has not been arrested. out of the six separate

shootings and stabbings that occurred since late may, only one suspect arrested. >> now to the latest developments, a wildfire continues to rage out of control. >> this fire is getting harder to fight. patrick healy from our sister station in los angeles. >> good morning from the santa barbara coast. day three of the sherpa fire. another challenging night for firefighters. important news for the bay area if you're planning on taking 101 to los angeles to 101 freeway is back open again after it had to be closed for a second overnight in a row because the flames of this fire got so close to the freeway. this fire has been driven largely by the sundowner from santa barbara where winds come up very strongly after dark out of the north, pushing the fire down the canyons towards the coast. then during the course of the night, the winds eventually

begin to diminish. by daybreak it is calm again and the fire activity slows markedly then picks up the next night. the weather is changing in southern california. we expect the temperatures to increase markedly today, and humidity also to drop so that on top of the concern that the sundowners will come back again later, a big concern about the growth of this fire. talking to incident command, they tell us they are optimistic they can box in this fire on three of the four sides. the concern though is that southeast exposure is in a wilderness area. they are having difficulty fighting the fire there. that is the exposure in the more populated slopes of santa barbara. one other concern up in these hills is the famous ranch which was the western white house during the presidency of ronald reagan. the initial start of the fire at the sherpa ranch was very close

to the reagan ranch. initially the fire started moving away then there were shifts at this point it is not believed the reagan ranch is in danger. i talked to the ranch director. he said they have foam, water, they have been removing some fuels from the area. they are ready if there is another change in the wind. the big story today will be to watch the temperatures and to see if those sundowners come back at night. fire command tells us this fire back in that wilderness area could burn for a considerable period of time before they can fully contain it. reporting from the santa barbara coast, patrick healy for nbc bay air why news. >> thank you. let's hope they can get a handle on that one. 6:37. another first for san francisco. there is a senior advisor to the mayor for transgender initiative. mayor ed lee appointed teresa sparks to that new position. sparks is a long-time executive

6:43. the cdc is reporting three babies born with birth defects linked to the zika virus in the u.s. three other babies are affected by zika have been lost to m miscarriage or abortion. tom costello joins with us a breakdown of the report from cdc. >> good morning. in northern california, no cases of women being infected with the zika virus inside the continental united states then giving birth to babies. we have three cases of women here in the united states who have given birth, they contracted zika while outside of the country. in total, 234 pregnant women in the united states thought to have the zika virus or have been exposed to the zika virus. it's thought all those women contracted the disease while outside the united states. another 189 cases reported in

u.s. territories, most of those were in puerto rico. now the concern is zika-carrying mosquitos could arrive on the u.s. mainland. at the moment, the biggest concern continues to be somebody who contracted zika while abroad in latin america or the caribbean comes back and then either is pregnant or the spouse or partner of somebody comes back having been infected and he has unprotected sex with a woman who is pregnant. you can see how zika gets transmitted. this is a very big concern health experts at the cdc are watching closely. all that coming up on "today." >> you can watch his full report coming up on the "today" show in 15 minutes at 7:00 this morning. stanford takes aim at cancer using guided chemotherapy missiles. the university scientists

light came crashing down into a home, narrowly missing a little boy inside. >> good morning to you. you can see the pole here on the ground. just on the other side of the wall behind it is where that 5-year-old boy was sitting with his parents' best man looking at pictures from the parents' wedding three weeks ago. the suv crashed with another car at the intersection of lafayette and lewis then hit a signal pole, crashed through the metal fence and smashed through the house itself. 5-year-old max was sitting on a couch with his parents when mom and dad saw headlights through the window behind them and glass flying everywhere. >> it happened really quickly. i think the easiest way to explain it was it was like a bomb went off outside. all we knew was our window was flying at it us. it's a miracle we only came out with minor injuries. it's eye opening. we don't let our kids play in the front yard because we know
