peggy has the evening off. smoke pouring into the san francisco sky lines, the fire burning buildings in the mission district. take a look at that. flames broke out just after 2:00. the fires spread, reaching four alarms in less than an hour. christie smith is live at the very active scene. christie? >> reporter: terry, i can tell you within the last couple of minutes, we've learned this fire has actually jumped to five alarms. and that's because johnathan baxter with the san francisco fire department is here updating the media right now. i'll stick the microphone in so you can hear what he's talking about. >> to relieve the firefighters who have been here over two hours, to allow them to rehab and get situated so they can go back and help out if necessary. with the fires, if you look at the ladder trucks that we have up, if you look on the ground, the large water pipes that are on the ground, those are to put a large amount of water onto the fire to allow us to get these

flames knocked down. once those flames are knocked down, the chief will allow the firefighters to go into the buildings to put out hotspots and, again, make sure there's nobody injured or in need of assistance. >> reporter: at this time there's no indications of anyone injured or killed? >> no indications of anyone injured or killed. >> reporter: do you know what building it started in? >> no. that will be determined by the investigator task force. the initial reports were towards the rear of 3300, which would also be towards the rear of 3306. somewhere in that general area is what the initial reports were. but until we get the investigation, the cause and the origin, we're not going to be able to pinpoint the exact location. >> reporter: so eight buildings and evacuations in place? >> yes, extending for the 3300 block of mission street to 3366

mission, as well as the two buildings on 29th street, 3131, 3131-a, and 3133. >> reporter: he's also told us there are no injuries. at this point they do not have it under control. they also have a shelter in place, they're telling us, which is basically a five-block radius from 29th and mission, which is the area we're standing at now. again, the good news here is we're not hearing of any injuries at all. they're also telling folks who are evacuated, if they want to go to the safeway parking lot, that might be a good place to congregate. but they have about 140 firefighters out here fighting this. they say it started at about 2:19 this afternoon. and i can tell you that when we were coming over from the east bay, we could actually see this fire on the west side at the bay bridge. i can hear him now talking about

one of the buildings that are of concern because it is a hardware store, and there may be of course paints and other chemicals there that could be of concern. and that goes to the shelter in place order they have for the area. we'll stick the microphone in again and catch up with what he's saying. >> could it spread at this time? we think we have a good handle on it. looking at what we have now, i'm not anticipating this to spread. i'm hoping we keep it at that. >> reporter: he's being asked about mutual aid. >> we still have over 100 firefighters in the city on modified response, that means we're sending our units at a lesser capability. so we would send an engine and a truck company two to an incident, we would just send an engine to the incident.

paul figueroa was asked to leave after only two days on the job. three police chiefs have left in nine days. the city administrator is now running the police department. today, top city leaders are weighing in on the disarray. >> it is a situation that has to be addressed from top to bottom. i don't know how this can continue to exist like this in oakland. >> the changes come as oakland deals with two investigations involving its police officers. one involves a widening sex scandal that's spread to other cities. and there's a series of racest text messages sent within the department. now all eyes will be on the current city administrator, to see how she deals with her new role of overseeing the police department. mayor libby schaaf appointed her yesterday, after calling the culture in the oakland police department, quote, toxic and macho. police command staff will now report to her.

her role is more administrative. nearly 300 homes and ranches are at risk tonight because of a wildfire burning on the central coast. firefighters are fighting the sherpa fire in santa barbara. it started earlier this week and has charred 7600 acres. there is a mandatory evacuation and fire crews are slowly making progress in containing the fire, especially since the wind died down overnight. >> we have sound priorities. we have sound control objectives. we had a very good night last night. >> the problem is it could get windy tonight. fire crews and helicopters are trying to get ahead of the flames before that happens. the heat and dry weather in the bay area is a concern. temperatures are expected to soar over the next few days. let's go to rob to see how hot it will get.

>> we're watching temperatures during the day tomorrow, climbing significantly. 81 degrees near the sherpa fire. notice the 24-hour temperature change through tomorrow, light winds into the early part of the day. then during the afternoon, the wind speeds pick up, humidity levels dropping off, as temperatures are set to skyrocket in southern california. numbers closing in on 115 degrees to wrap up the weekend in palm springs. 90s into l.a. even the bay area starting to see temperatures climbing up a little bit today, we managed low 80s inland. that monster ridge of high pressure will build closer to the bay area, which will alter temperatures. coming up, we'll let you know how long the heat will be sticking around, coming up in a few minutes. >> rob, thank you very much. check the weather in your neighborhood with our nbc 10

app. a devastating turn in florida tonight after police say a driver trying to cut through a funeral procession for one of the victims in the mass shooting hit two deputies on motorcycles. police say one is in stable condition tonight, the other in critical. more funerals are taking place this weekend for the victims of the deadly nightclub shooting. many of the survivors will find the road to recovery very long. this is video of tony marrero walking for the first time since the shooting. he was shot in the back. he says he was laying on the floor of the nightclub, trying to fool the gunman into thinking he was dead. an officer later pulled him to safety. the san jose earthquakes are in orlando right now, honoring the victims in the deadly nightclub shooting by wearing black armbands during the game and showing their support for the lgbtq community. less than 30 days until the

looked across the bay and saw the smoke coming up. they seem to be getting a handle on it. 15 minutes ago, a live report from the scene said they did not have it contained quite yet. it looks like they're getting the upper handle on it. we'll have more from countries can i in about 15 more from christie in about 15 minutes. the obamas are in the yosemite national park. of course there will be a speech somewhere in the itinerary. the president is there in honor of the 100th anniversary of the national park system, coming up in august. mr. obama focused his speech on conservation and keeping the parks in tip top shape. >> as we look back over the last00 years, there's plenty to celebrate about a national parks system that is the envy of the world. but when we look to the next century, the next hundred years, the task of protecting our sacred spaces is even more important.

>> the president's visit brings a price for some tourists. the wait to get into yosemite today is four hours because of his visit. on thursday, mr. obama will be here in the south bay to participate in the global entrepreneurship summit being held at stanford. an anonymous gun buyback program is being held in pittsburg. police said residents will remain anonymous and officers will not be checking for warrants, no background checks. police say 300 firearms have been turned in at the buybacks since they started a few years ago. people who turned in guns received target gift cards. still to come at 5:00, it's a winner take all game tomorrow at oracle. >> we need our best basketball for 48 minutes to end the season

arena. let's check in with rob mayeda with your microclimate forecast. getting hot, rob. >> and hopefully the warriors turning things around. at least outside, the temperatures will start to heat up in the bay area. the start of father's day weekend not too bad. 70s and 80s across most of the area, including san francisco, where it's 71. 79 in the north bay. towards the tri valley, 80s. 76 into san jose. south bay microclimates climbing up to the mid-80s. tomorrow, likely soaring into the 90s. 76 around downtown san jose. san francisco, 71, a little breezy outside. wind speeds have been up to 25 miles per hour. over the next few days we'll see less of that sea breeze, so less of that ocean air conditioning, and our temperatures are set to climb. through the rest of the evening, pretty comfortable for your

evening plans. saturday, 70s. midnight, a few patches of clouds. tomorrow morning, coastal fog and mist as our afternoon temperatures begin to climb. if you have beach plans for sunday, looks pretty nice, 70s around santa cruz and 70 at ocean beach. reno, things start to heat up, upper 80s. similar temperatures for the bay area. now awwe've moved from mid-80s today to 90s possible. you can see san francisco climbing into the 70s in the north bay, and the same spread of temperatures near walnut creek, pleasanton, livermore highs in the 90s. this high will strengthen, reach its peak intensity late monday into tuesday. likely for at least tuesday we'll see hot temperatures and probably into wednesday. the second half of the week, the

high begins to flatten out. an area of low pressure approaches the coast. may even see a few showers on thursday afternoon. that will finally set the stage for cooling temperatures. you can see san francisco staying in the mid-70s for the beginning of the week. then cooling for thursday and friday. check out san jose's numbers, near 90. probably low 90s on wednesday. the hottest stretch of weather, pleasanton, 85 degrees, staying in the 90s tuesday and wednesday. thursday and friday, cooling there, a sea breeze returns. we'll see cooling, and the pattern reverses again towards next week. hot temperatures at the beginning of next week. then next weekend, another warm-up as we head towards sunday. >> thanks so much. we continue to follow breaking news for you. a fast-moving fire quickly moving to five alarms in san francisco's mission district. people are told to shelter in place because of the smoke. we'll have a live report from the scene, coming up. plus --

that's where there's a shelter-in-place there in mission, that smoke could get into people's lungs. four or five buildings have burned, and that is going to a fifth alarm, meaning a whole lot of crews, a whole lot of equipment being thrown at that fire at 29th and mission. nobody has been injured, that's the good news. we'll have more from christie smith live at the scene in about five minutes. parents will do anything for their kids. some take that farther than others. a saratoga mom is traveling the world and draining her bank account so her daughter can live out her dreams. garvin thomas has tonight's bay area proud. >> reporter: tina was a san francisco police officer for over 20 years. she says it taught her a lot about dealing with people and getting them to understand the right thing to do, skills she still uses all the time. just in a different venue. making sure her daughter has a

future in her favorite sport. if you head into the backyard of the family home in saratoga, be prepared. this is a sport 15-year-old raquel has been doing for years. although mom tina says she's been in the water much, much longer. since she was 4 months old. therapy for her erb's palsy. >> she would fall over, couldn't walk straight, limping. >> reporter: major surgery helped raquel gain range of motion, and swimming has been great for her recovery, not to mention her trophy case. >> my daughter just went crazy, she won gold and silver medals.

she was paired in a duet. she was the only girl with a disability on the team. >> reporter: her disability means high level competition like the olympics is out of reach. it was a bitter pill for her and her mom to swallow. >> that's the hardest thing as a parent you'll ever be able to witness, is when your child, regardless of who they are, they put their heart and soul into something, they excel, but because they don't meet a criteria, they're told they can't do it. >> reporter: but if that sport wasn't the right fit, tina decided, time to start their own. she retired as a san jose police officer and now dedicates all her time and most of her money to synchronized swimming for athletes with disabilities. tina and raquel have been traveling the world, encouraging other countries to start similar programs so the sport will be
