nbc's bay area news starts now. six buildings burned, dozens of people displaced. a massive fire rips through san francisco this afternoon. thanks for joining us. peggy is off tonight. that directive fire happening at mission and 29th street. started 2:30 this afternoon, and wasn't contained for four hours. we have team coverage standing by with what is being done for the victims of this fire. and there are dozens of them. first christie smith live at the scene to show us with what happened. >> reporter: well, terry, i can tell you it is still smoky out here, but not nearly as bad as

it was earlier. firefighters have made significant progress on this five-alarm fire. the setter in place is lifted. we are told no injuries to report, but at least 40 people displaced. you can see what firefighters are doing now is just continuing to spray water as they have been doing for hours now. but at this point the fire is contained. the flames grew quickly on mission street at 29th street. robert bunting awe it. >> it was a little smoke. a minute later, big flames. it was just, it went up fast. >> reporter: flames powering frpowering -- pouring from the front. sid shake was shopping across the street. >> they made a public announcement inside that you better get your car out. >> reporter: evacuations were issued. six buildings involved, a residential and businesses below. san francisco firefighters

poured water from the outside. >> once we are able to determine that it's safe to enter these buildings we are going to be putting our firefighters into the buildings to put out any of the embers and hot spots and do some more searches to make sure there is no victims or injuries. >> reporter: a shelter in place was issued for a five-block area. as thick smoke could be seen. those nearby watched and waited. >> i was worried, yeah. all the way start the smoke going that way and it seemed like in the beginning it was out of control. >> reporter: and you can see here coal's hardware and there are restaurant here, some more damaged than others. in all we are told about 150 firefighters were involved in this. at this point they still don't know what caused it. of course they are still, as you can see, spraying water out here. and i'm told that it is very possible they have been telling folks to avoid the area and it's very possible that mission

street and 29th street in this area might be closed to street traffic at least overnight. reporting live in san francisco. christie smith. >> thanks very much. great news to hear about no one injured. the smoke from this fire could be seen across san francisco. you could see it from east bay this afternoon. and what was in that smoke, one of the reasons people remember told to shelter in place. we mentioned there were no injuries, but there are ee vac c. >> reporter: they have been brought to the shelter on valencia street. most of them say they still don't know if they will be able to return home tomorrow. >> reporter: before the flames liked like this, people who lived hearsay they smelled smoke. >> we come out of our room and we discovered it is a fuse box, we popped it open and smoke

started flooding out of it. i tried to put it out, but you know, by the time i came back it was completely up. >> reporter: joseph williams grabbed their one year old son and ran out. >> everything we own is there. we don't have anything. >> reporter: joseph and his family joined dozens of people here at the safe way parking lot nearby where american red cross volunteers offered them water, help, and hope. >> please load the bus. >> reporter: the red cross says they are assisting at least 46 people. some were able to rescue their pets. steph tan aanie wilson was not. >> told me to get out the building and i'm telling them my kit ens were in my room. >> infants to an 89-year-old woman. this man said he needed to take critical medication that went up in flames. as they boarded a bus to take them to a salvation army

shelter, many say they are in shock that what little they did have is destroyed. some decide today stay with friends or family tonight. 27 evacuees are staying at this salvation army center tonight and they were welcomed with a hot meal. reporting live. nbc bay area news. >> all right. thanks very much. the shock waves are still fresh tonight following the shake up in the oakland police department as another police chief is ousted. the latest in what has been a tumultuous month. two of his successors have stepped down the latest paul figueroa was asked to leave after only two days on the job. the city administrator now running the police department. today the public defender talked about the chaos. >> it is a situation that has to be addressed from top to bottom.

the whole department to be evaluated. i don't know how this can continue to exist like this in on the corner land. >> the changes come as on the corner land deals with two investigations involving its police officers. one involves a widening sex scandal that has spread to other cities and departments. the other has to do with a series of raicist text messages. we saw temperatures here in the 80s today, but a heat wave is on the way. it could be dangerous in some parts of the state. rob? >> temperatures today not too bad. still 72 after sun down but what we are tracking is happening right now to our east. a rinl dge of high pressure wil strength en. temperatures to father's day approaching 114 in palm springs. and the bay area seeing temperatures which should be in the 70's to low 80's, and into

apple. apple is not commenting on the report in the politico. >> i feel like a super model except like times 10. >> donald trump spent the day campaigning in phoenix and loss vague gas, vegas. meanwhile, the presumptive democratic nominee hillary clinton had nothing on her public agenda today. she's celebrating the birth of her second grandchild. she'll be back on the campaign trail next week. the death penalty, highly controversial and this fall it will be on the ballot in california. a petition to abolish the death penalty law gained enough signatures to make it on to the november ballot. the measure would make the maximum sentence in california life in prison without the possibility of parole. but, but a second competing initiative is expected to also be on the ballot and that would one beat up executions and limit appeals.

santa barbara california, as crews try to get a line around a wall of flames before 50 mile-an-hour winds hit at night fall. >> we've got a hard sunday and monday in front of us potentially. >> from the air and ground, firefighters are trying to stop the spread of the so-called sherpa fire. day four and itdevoured close t 8,000 acres. hour by hour it's a constant push and pull. the wind picks up, crews are deployed, they douse and it starts again. at a local shelter, they had been camping just a few miles from where the fire broke out and made it out just in time. >> the sky turned bright, bright, deep orange, but then you think, oh, my god, that's fire. we have to get out of here. >> across the west, more heartache in eastern arizona, the cedar fire has burned more

than 12,000 acres. close to a thousand firefighters are on the line. in new mexico the fire has torched more than 17,000 acres, and burned more than 24 homes. melissa urban's family ranch has been around for six generations. >> i'm really sad. >> the rut land family got their animals out just in time. >> just to know they are safe. that's everything. >> i have been on the brink of crying about every five minutes and i'm trying to be strong but it's not easy. the obamas are in california they are making the rounds at yosemite national park. hiking and a speech all part of the itinerary today. the president is there in honor of the 100th anniversary of the national park system. the weight to get into yosemite today four hours because of the president's visit. and on thursday, mr. obama will be in the south bay to

for our inland locations. starting off the day sunny tomorrow. and our temperatures will climb not just for you're inland spots, but watch santa near 70 towards ocean beach. tomorrow we are expecting upper 80's to low 90's. 70's closer to san francisco for the north bay. nushs nu numbers in the upper 80's. napa mostly low 90's. so from sunday, monday into tuesday, the high pressure reaches its peek intensity. so the temperatures over the five-day outlook likely staying in the 70's from about monday through wednesday. and then notice thursday and friday the sea breeze picks up again. for san jose downtown near 90. areas south of downtown on

monday may see some mid and upper 90's. the hottest weather we'll see to start the week will be areas south of san jose. those temperatures climbing on up. 90's expected through about midweek and then thursday and friday not only will with see some cooling, we will likely see a few increases in clouds. the high will begin to week en -- weak en. enhance the sea breeze. so the second half of the week shows you that temperatures will be staying above average, but not as hot as the weather we'll see from sunday through wednesday. and just in case you are making plans for next weekend, it looks like we are going to see another bit of a warm up, not as hot as the weather earlier in the week. we will see temperatures beginning to rebound back in the 90's across the valleys next sunday. >> summertime. it's the equivalent of a basketball super bowl. game seven of the nba finals, one game, winner takes all,

lead, i'm not sure anyone predicted there would be a game seven. but here we are on the eve of arguably the biggest game to ever be played in the bay area. the warriors down to their final practice of the season. no team has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit in the finals. the warriors are looking to keep it that way, but the cavs have all the momentum right now. he admits there is no doubt they are feeling the heat of winning back to back nba titles. >> if you don't feel pressure in a game seven, you are probably not human. i told our guys that. of course they are going to feel pressure. of course there is going to be some anxiety. but how lucky are we to feel that pressure. >> it really is a dream to be here, to tell myself embrace the moment. this is what i dreamed of as a kid. it's weird that it's actually reali
