park this weekend. the president is there in honor of the 100th anniversary of the national park system which actually is in august. mr. obama focused his speech on conservation and keeping the parks in tiptop shape. >> there's plenty to celebrate about a national park system that is the envy of the world. when we look to the next century, the next hundred years, the task of protecting our sacred spaces is even more important. >> the wait to get into yosemite yesterday was four hours because of the president's visit. that's not totally unusual at yosemite. and on thursday, mr. obama will be in the south bay to participate in the global entrepreneurship summit being held at stanford. just shy of 7:18 right now. we'll check in with thoanthony slaughter with a look at our father's day forecast. >> it's going to be warm.

hopefully you have ac and if you don't, get to a cool spot. it will be warm. even at the coastline. you can see those are the hills of sunol. it's brown out there. 90-degree heat not the best thing for the bay area. that's what we're going to get even in san francisco today. we'll get into the 70s later on. pretty comfortable out there if you want to get outside. this is the time to do so. you don't have to worry about sweating through your clothes. 63 in san francisco. 57 in the peninsula. look at our highs later on this afternoon. we're talking 80s through most of the inner bay from east bay through the peninsula. 80 for east bay today. peninsula up to 86. south bay is where you'll see 90s from sunnyvale toward morgan hill and toward gilroy. 92 degrees expected. 75 for san francisco. it will be cool at the coastline but hot for those inland valleys. let's take you to the maps and show what you we're talking about. 70s all of the way down toward
7:19 am
half moon bay. you get toward santa cruz, 80s this afternoon. most of the bay, 90s continue to hang on tightly for the tri-valley and the south bay through today. tomorrow look at what happens. we're talking 100s for the sacramento valley and some of those may stretch over toward antioch as we head toward tuesday. 90s again hanging on tightly for the south bay and tri-valley. 80s for inner bay. 70s at the coastline. that will be our general trend over the next couple days. not seeing much movement in our pattern because high pressure is going to stay in control. it's going to dominate most of the western half of the country. look at numbers. this is for tomorrow. taking you to las vegas, 112, 113 by tomorrow afternoon. palm springs pushing 120 tomorrow afternoon. los angeles up against the water. still going to be warm. 96 degrees there for tomorrow and even san diego, 83. so the high pressure, that's going to be with us at least through the next couple of days. once we hit wednesday and thursday, temperatures will

bay, east bay and tri-valley as temperatures cool from 90s back to the 80s. that won't happen here until we hit thursday. between now and wednesday just going to be hot. try to cool off if you can. back to you. >> we have been warned. anthony, thanks. much more ahead on "today in the bay," bypassing the typical pass of a new college graduate. this woman will make you bay area proud with her plans for a long march to success. us .... when college graduates

7:25 am
she's already gotten so much. >> all i have done is been taking from society just going to school. being in school, you're really just a leech on your parents or for me the military. >> the military helped pay sarah's way through college as part of the rotc program. she admits she joins just for the money but she's become a fan of the mission. her career goal is now to one day be an army doctor. it's why she's chosen to hike the trail not just for a personal challenge but as a fund-raiser for a worthwhile cause. travis mills is one of only five quadriplegic from the war. raising even just a couple of dollars per mile will make the lonely stretches on the trail

easier to endure. >> every mile i go i can say what is this $2.50 going to in feeding someone lunch or a whole day's worth of hiking is it buying a piece of equipment for them or whole month of hiking? think of what you can do with that. >> sarah is aware this is far from the typical post-graduation path of work or graduate school. she is also confident it's the right path for her. you heard sarah mention 2.50 per mile. she's already up to more than $3 a mile, which means she will have raised more than $8,000 for the travis mills foundation when she's done. sarah expects that number to rise. garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. if you know of someone doing something nice for others, garvin would love to hear from you. please go to our website, nbcbayarea.com, and search bay area proud. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a high profile rape trial comes to an end.

action with the current company, cypress security. >> these are our tax dollars. palo alto has a lot of money. good for them. there are better ways to use our money. >> we need to have the best adults for these kids at the railroad tracks. >> reporter: we learned some of these problems could have been avoided. the investigative unit saw this letter saying conditions at the track created challenges it predicted and that it proposed solutions to the city months ago. back in december and again in march. one of the biggest, the lack of adequate restroom facilities. cypress said multiple posts guard working at night must travel 1.3 miles to 3.5 miles each way to get to the nearest bathroom at a safeway store, which leaves posts empty for nearly an hour. cypress recommended installing portable restrooms. it wasn't until five months after cypress' original recommendation that the city hired one additional guard to provide relief at the post

during rest and meal breaks. >> it's unreasonable to think an officer has to walk a half mile to use the restroom. >> reporter: we showed the recommendations to hamilton. he's worked in private and corporate security for 30 years and oversaw security for facebook. >> i think the recommendations are outstanding. i think every one of those recommendations is spot on. but i would have made those recommendations at the onset. >> reporter: cypress wants the city to install permanent guard shacks. they discussed the concern because security officers would seek warmer and drier locations and take refuge in their personal vehicles. something we observed over multiple nights of surveillance. >> there was clearly a disconnect between what the best of intentions were versus what the outcome was. >> reporter: the importance of the program continues to hang over this city. in may, another recent high school graduate ended her life on the tracks prompting the city to add a fifth post. several guards also complained
7:36 am
to residents and to us saying they are regularly asked to work overtime shifts of 12 hours or more. >> you want people at their best, 8 to 10 hours is as much as you want them to work. >> reporter: the company has seen 25% turnover because of these conditions despite a raise of $2 an hour. >> do you think palo alto city leaders and security companies didn't prepare well enough for this project? >> there were opportunities missed. >> reporter: the city needs to make sure a worthwhile program in concept is worthwhile in effectiveness. the current contract ends june 30th. we asked the city for an on-camera interview but the city declined saying it's in negotiations for a new contract. the owner of cypress security says he's proud of the officers

incumbents, that status no it's no secret that california has become a blue state but for many democratic incumbents, that status is no longer enough to assure renomination in the state's primaries. we spoke with nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston and here's video where we ask him if a new rule has had an impact on incumbents being renominated compared with years
7:47 am
past. >> yes, it has. that's because of changes in the state's primary system. not the kind of thing we often think about. yes. it's had a major impact. to your point, until recently each party was able to nominate a candidate who would face-off against the other parties and their nominees in november. that's how most of us grew up. in 2010, the voters passed proposition 14 which created what's known as the top two primary system. for every partisan office except for presidency. so what happens? the two candidates who win the most votes in june will face one another in november. and that can mean two republicans. that can mean two democrats. that can mean two of everybody of the same parties, the top two period, that's become particularly difficult since 2012 when the first two contests started. >> so we've had this in place now for a couple elections. but how has this as opposed to
7:48 am
pitting a republican and democrat against one another, hows th has this pitted candida from the same party against one another? >> the u.s. senate, two democrats are running against each other for the first time. that's opened people's eyes. it's affected us a lot more than some might think. take a look, for example, as the five legislative elections before the top two systems and then look at the three elections we've had since adoption of the top two systems. there you have it. more than 1/4th of state senate incumbents faced challengers from their own party in november including this coming november. about one-fifth of all assembly members now have faced challenges from their own party again in november. now, these situations in effect occur much more commonly in the past when you have 2% and 8%
7:49 am
doing the same thing. and most of the face-offs occurred among democrats. why? because there are so many more legislative districts with democratic majorities than districts with republican majorities in california. so, yes, big changes. >> so in your humble yet very informed position, is this a good thing or a bad thing? >> i'm going to give you both sides. >> of course. >> it depends on who you ask of course. proponents of the change believe it's a better way of challenging incumbents and believe the new system encourages the election of more moderates although studies so far show that change is yet to come. finally, they contend that voters in districts dominated by one political party, they should have choices from that party. those are some of the reasons. >> what, if any, are negative impacts of this change? >> negative impacts according to opponents who would say the top
7:50 am
