bay as well as the tri valley and the peninsula to 87. a little bit better in san francisco, where it will be 76 degrees. we'll talk about what else to expect as we go into the ref this week and the weekend coming up as the heat continues. let's head over to mike. the macarthur maze looks good. >> it's a treat, we're looking at a smooth flow here. the map shows no real slowdowns that are unusual except for the tri valley. we zoom in now for the west 580. a big jamup as you're approaching duarte, clear from the center divide. a little distraction. that's the flow out of livermore towards the dublin interchange. folks making the cut through to avoid the dublin interchange, that's a good idea, even if you have to go back one exit to get that. a smooth flow of track of for 101 and 87, a little build. let me show you this map, guys.

officer katherman's memorial starts at 9:45 out of los gatos along 17, santa cruz toward winchester boulevard, then san carlos and eventually s.a.p. center. there will be a huge procession along the city streets. again, that will be an issue coming along city streets. the freeway should remain open. we'll have bob with more on the memorial in just a couple of seconds, but now we'll send it back for breaking news. we are continuing to follow the very emotional day ahead, mike, this morning. for the entire bay area, thousands will come together in san jose to remember officer michael katherman, killed last week while riding his motorcycle. michael katherman. he was a father to two young children, a husband to his wife, and of course an 11-year member of sjpd, most recently as a motorcycle officer. last week he tried to pull over a speeding car and he collided with a van in san jose. he died despite the efforts of paramedics to save him. you can see the flowers left outside the headquarters, showing how much he was loved and missed. the motorcade is expected to arrive at s.a.p. at 10:30, the memorial service at 11:00. at 1:30, the memorial procession will leave s.a.p., take the body of officer katherman to a cemetery for private burial, argumentative at 2:45 this afternoon. this is video of air support practicing yesterday for their performance at the s.a.p. center

later today. surrounding agencies will help staff sjpd so its officers can attend today's memorial service, which again is open to the public. at this morning's memorial service, police will be collecting military challenge points for officer katherman's two young boys who like to collect those tokens, they're a source of pride for those who serve in the armed services. live in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> no doubt a nice reflection on officer katherman's life. the service starts at 11:00 this morning. we'll bring you live coverage and will stream the service on nbcbayarea.com. sam? we move now, laura, to breaking news. firefighters this morning could not save six cats caught in a house fire in fremont. the home is on the corner of hastings street and he hedgars drive. the fire quickly spread to the

rest of the house. firefighters say the home was full of flammable items that fueled the flames. they called for additional help. nobody was home at the time of the fire. wildfires baking and burning out of control, now threatening homes 20 miles east of l.a. there are now concerns the two fires could merge into one massive fire. these are live images, smoke from above, as firefighters continue to try to prevent the merging of these two. the first fire, the reservoir fire, started yesterday after a deadly car crash in asouza. an hour later, the fish fire ignited in duarte. temperatures are expected to reach the high 90s in southern california, not good news for firefighters. laura? sam, police in the east bay are trying to sort out a chaotic car crash in the east bay.

one driver was apparently stabbed and left a trail of blood as he fled and officers caught up with him. it started in pleasant hills. officers found the man in the backyard of a nearby home. authorities say the driver struck two cars with his cadillac, and smashed into a light pole, splitting the car in two. witnesses say he then took off running, eventually ending up in a nearby yard where a homeowner spotted him. >> i turned around, there's this guy with no shirt on in the back corner of my house. it looked like he was maybe trying to jump the fence or something like that, covered in blood. >> that homeowner says police arrived before he had the chance to call 911. he says the officers briefly questioned the suspect before emergency crews took him to the hospital where last night he underwent surgery. authorities have not yet said whether the man will be charged. for the second time in a week, an investigator with alameda county da has been placed on leave. in this case, according to a source in the department, this

issue centers around racist text messages. the suspended investigator is not accused of sending the texts but rather receiving them and then not reporting them. he's said to be a former oakland police officer. in the meantime, acting assistant chief david downing is now the new leader of the oakland police department. the city has cycled through three police chiefs over the last two weeks. >> we've been working hard to rebuild the bond between the community and the police. seeing this level of disfunction undermines that. >> another da's office investigator was placed on leave last week in connection with the oakland sex scandal case. a dozen oakland police officers are now linked to the self-described teenaged prostitute at the center of the case. the mother of one of the victims of the berkeley balcony collapse will attend a hearing in sacramento. state lawmakers are considering

a new bill. her daughter ashley is one of six people who died last year when the balcony they were standing on gave way. today, senate policy committee will consider a bill that calls for increasing oversight on contractors. becky donahoe is attending the hearing. it's not yet clear whether she will testify. arrested again after a first arrest that made headlines. police say a 37-year-old oakland resident broke into a home sunday night while the owner was sleeping in san francisco's bay view district. officers say that homeowner woke up and began screaming, causing her to run out the backdoor of the house. now, if she looks familiar, here's why. it's the second time if two weeks that she has been arrested. this other case involves police charging her with stealing an ambulance that ended up crashing on treasure island. she had been free on supervised release. we want to check in with kari who has a look at our microclimate forecast this morning, another hot one across

little lane graves.... the alligator at disney world by an one week ago. a funeral will be held today for the 2-year-old killed by an alligator at disney world a week ago. last weekend lane was wading in the lagoon when the alligator grabbed him and dragged him into the water. his body was found the next day. there were signs saying no swimming, but since the attack, disney says it will now add alligator warning signs to all

its water areas. international news. one man is under arrest after a security scare overnight in brussels. a busy shopping area went underlounde under lockdown. a man was wearing what looked like an explosive belt but it only contained salt and cookies. the federal aviation administration is expected to announce new rules for drones weighing less than 55 pounds. it would allow drone operators to fly without the special permission that is currently required. the new rules may also be good news for commercial operators. they won't need to apply for case by case waivers to fly drones. a wall street firm says donald trump's presidency would be gad for the economy. >> not just bad, scott mcgrew, they think it would cause a recession.

>> that's right, the ratings agency moody's has released its analysis of the proposed trump presidency. moody's analysts point out their calculations come out from the economic plans that trump has actually talked about. his more vague plans like restricting muslims from entering the country, they say, will also hurt the economy. fed chair janet yellen will testify on capitol hill this morning, a regularly-scheduled thing, but some strange timing, right after a fed meeting but right before the brexit vote. today there are simply too many unknowns. trump says he'll replace yellen as head of the fed because she's not a republican.

he's called for an audit of the federal reserve. secretary clinton hasn't said much about yellen but plans to change the way fed members are chosen. the dow was up 130, nasdaq 36. apple stocks under pressure in the next couple of days because of a paperwork issue. it's super geeky, just ignore apple for a bit. spotify hit 100 million users the other day. 30 million pay the extra money not to hear the ads, twice as many as paid apple music users. the company just elected a director of investor relations, which generally speaking you don't need unless you're public company, so we rather suspect an ipo is in the works. >> interesting. >> you guys use spotify? >> yes. >> who doesn't? >> the biggest library of all of these services. >> i read somewhere, 20,000 songs a day are added to spotify. >> amazing that that much music

francisco. 57 in the peninsula. the south bay is 60 degrees. as we drop in on the north bay to get a closer look, we have 60 degrees now in vallejo and cass i wi calistoga. through the rest of the day, at 8:00 we're at 61 degrees and quickly rising. temperatures will be hitting the low 80s as we go into the day. the east bay will be one of the spots where you really have to take it easy, especially if you have breathing problems. and they're really advising people to take public transportation or carpool. this is where ozone levels will be the most unhealthy. and the south bay will be right behind that. keep that in mind during the hottest hours of the day. we have the stagnant weather patterns and not much of a wind, and some high heat, where temperatures will be topping out in the low 90s in morgan hill. palo alto, 90 degrees there. some 60s along the coast.

as hot as 90 degrees for antioch. oakland, 80 degrees. danville up to 92 degrees. we're on the outer fringes of this dome of high pressure that causes this very dangerous heat across the region. as we look at where the temperatures are going for the southwest today, vegas will be up to 112 degrees. and it only takes minutes of being outside in that kind of heat for it to start to have an impact on your body. even in the bay area, we'll be well above average. our average high is at 81 degrees. we'll be in the upper 80s and even up to 90 degrees into the weekend. so this heat is not going anywhere anytime soon. even well above average in san francisco, even though the temperatures will be a lot more comfortable heading into the weekend. expect the highs to top out in the upper 80s to low 90s. in the south, up to 96 degrees on saturday. sunday, not much better, up to 93 degrees. i'll have another look at the

forecast coming up. let's head over to mike now, looking at an easy build approaching the bay bridge. >> it's easy because i don't have to wait when you get to the toll plaza, so i'll say it's easy. some slowing, berkeley curve. that's the continued build we'll see. rest of the bay shows a nice flow of traffic. speed sensors at the bottom of your screen. let me zoom in, east bay, a crash southbound 880 at a street. some slowing. reports of a motorcycle standing up on the shoulder. the rider is kind of laying down on the side there as well. no impact is evident but we have that distraction. crews are arriving. we're concerned and watching this, slowing for the distraction, then the build toward union city passed the san mateo bridge. the crash at hopyard is cleared, now recovery out of livermore. toward the dublin interchange. expect the build in the tri

say goodbye to san jose police officer michael katherman, an emotional day for the city of san jose and the bay area community. the funeral will begin this morning at the s.a.p. center. katherman was an 11-year veteran of the department killed last week while residing his motorcycle, when he pulled over a speeding car, hit by a van. >> our officers are out there taking an extraordinary risk every day to keep our community safe and serving us. we need to honor them when they spend their final moments in that service. >> officer katherman, who worked in the capacity of comforting families who had lost loved ones, also leaves behind a wife and two young children. our very own bob redell is at the s.a.p. center and will have a live report coming up in 25 minutes. it is 6:32.

starting today, bay area drivers will see a very visible reminder of the efforts to recall a judge at the center of a stanford small case. "today in the bay'"''s" kris sanchez has more. >> reporter: this is a very visible reminder of that outreach, laura. you don't have to ask mike how many traffic goes through here. this is what this billboard behind me is going to read later on today and for the next four weeks. it is funded by the national women's advocacy group ultra violet. it says persky must go. it calls on people to sign a petition telling the california commission on judicial performance that the judge should be benched. he has been under fire ever since sentencing brock turner to just six months in jail for three counts of sexual assault on an unconscious woman instead of ten to 14 years in prison as allowed by law you.

>> this is not going away. people are still outraged. they will continue to speak out until this judge is removed from the bench. >> reporter: now, brock turner has a family support page created in the last few weeks. it has more than 6,000 likes. a family lawyer says that the family has nothing to do with it and in fact it may be a parody page. but it is worth noting that no matter how people people like that family support page, no matter how many people signed that petition for the california judicial review, really the only way for this judge, judge aaron persky, to be removed, is by a recall vote of the santa clara county voters. this sign is flashing in alameda county. in hayward, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." a letter allegedly written by a 15-year-old boy has raised new controversy for police and officials at scotts valley high school. it threatens specific students and teachers with murder and sexual assault. it was reportedly delivered to one of the students. now several parents have hired

an attorney to help get to the bottom of it. the letter started circulating during the last day of school. it was brought to the attention of school administrators who in turn called police. still, some parents don't think the school took the letter seriously. they contacted an attorney who will now seek a restraining order against the letter's alleged author. >> we want to make sure our kids are safe. we want to make sure that this boy gets the help he clearly needs. and we want a change in the culture of the school administration. >> scotts valley police wrapped up a two-week investigation this weekend. today the district attorney will consider whether charges should be filed against the boy. 6:35 right now on your tuesday morning. a bit of good news but only for a few for those displaced by saturday's huge fire in san francisco's bernal heights. one group got back into their homes last night. but there are only some of the 57 people displaced by saturday's fire.

now, flames did not damage the building that they live in on 29th and mission street for those lucky few. but they say they have heavy hearts, knowing so many other people lost everything. >> a lot of it was low income housing, and people don't really know what they're going to do next. really sad, really unfortunate. >> i feel really bad for the families next door. they don't have a place anymore. >> investigators now say the fire started in the hardware store at street level, then proceeded to spread to the apartments upstairs, then to neighborhoo neighboring buildings. how the fire started is still under investigation. in the wake of the orlando shooting, security will be tight at this weekend's pride festival in san francisco. one of the largest pride events in the world. more than a million people are expected in san francisco during the parade. changes this year include increased police presence at every pride event and gay club. and new this year, no large bags or purses will be allowed in. everyone will have to walk

through a metal detector to enter the festival. there will also be plainclothed officers inside the event. several security checkpoints will be set up at civic center plaza. the orlando massacre also raised new calls for gun control legislation. but those calls were rejected by the senate. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts has been following that angle from washington, d.c. once again, a mass tragedy, once again, talk about doing something rather than nothing. and lawmakers do nothing. >> reporter: exactly. yeah, once again, gridlock, because there is agreement that they don't want weapons in the hands of terrorists, especially high powered guns. there is not agreement on how to do that and preserve the second amendment. that's why we saw all of these measures, two democrat and two republican plans, fail. >> the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: gun control has failed again. >> it's what they predicted, you know. >> another missed opportunity. >> reporter: lawmakers could the

temperatures from 68 at half moon bay to 92 degrees in morgan hill. 75 degrees in the financial district. and fairfield will be up to 95 degrees. also mid-90s for parts of the delta and the tri valley. we'll talk about what else to expect as this heat continues over the next few days, that's coming up. let's head over to mike now. it looks pretty slow in the south bay. >> it is, kari. the 101 camera, this is where we're seeing the second burst of traffic, the commute starting to build. that's at the bottom of the screen for silicon valley. typical at this time. as we zoom in towards some other trouble spots, we're looking at westbound 580. recovery there from the earlier crash at duarte that has cleared. southbound 680, which is also slowing down towards this area, a crash reported there. it looks like everything is off to the shoulder. i'll get more details from chp and let you know if that's a problem. over here, activity south 880 at a street, still off the roadway, that distraction, the motorcycle on the shoulder, and the

scandals spiraling for opd. now it's a racist text scandal sweeping through the oakland police department, continuing to reach beyond the walls of police headquarters. an alameda county investigator who is a former officer at opd is on administrative leave. >> it's amazing, it just continues. we're live with the latest on all of this turmoil hitting the department. >> reporter: it seems to be growing, laura and sam, good morning to you. that da investigator who is now

on leave is accused of receiving racist text messages and not reporting them. this follows the oakland police department putting lieutenant tony jones, who is black, on believe for allegedly sending racist texts about black on black crime to officers in the department, all as opd struggles to find leadership. the city has named david downing as acting chief. he will run day to day operations and report to city administrator sabrina landreth. oakland has gone through three police chiefs in eight days, the latest stepping down after just two days. >> we've been working hard to rebuild that bond between the community and the police. seeing this level of dysfunction undermines that. >> reporter: the followup began with an alleged sex scandal. the oakland police department investigating claims that more than a dozen of its officers had sex with a teenaged prostitute, the daughter of a police dispatcher. and an oakland veteran homicide

>> fascinating guy to read, i'm sure to listen to as well. thank you very much. >> you bet. the latest developments in southern california where there are concerns two new wildfires are threatening homes in the san gabriel mountains and could merge. the inflammatiflames are burnin control 20 miles east of los angeles. >> miguel almaguer joins us live. miguel, in all there are eight wildfires burning across california. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, guys, good morning. it's not just those wildfires, but you couple them with the extreme heat and you have a recipe for disaster. those two wildfires burning here in our area right now that you're taking a look at on your screen are working away from homes. of course, just like in the bay area, the conditions here can change on a dime. the wind speeds are what firefighters will be concerned about today. and also just the extreme heat which is fueling these fires. as you guys know in the bay

area, we have had a crippling drought across the state, that's also a major contributing factor to the fires burning here. we have another major wildfire burning in san diego and in parts of southern california we expect the temperature near palm springs to reach well over 110 degrees later on today. we had blackouts in the los angeles area because there's been so much pressure and so much strain on the power grid. so it's going to be a long day for firefighters on the front lines and those looking to seek relief from this extreme heat wave out here in the southern part of the state, guys. >> it would be nice if they get some sort of break. thank you, miguel. watch his full report on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. continues in the bay area also very dangerous as we've continued to see elevated heat levels, kari. >> and it's not as intense as what we're seeing in southern california, which is great news. but it will still be hot, you still have to take it easy. we do still have the danger of some high ozone levels in the air today as well as some heat-sensitive groups may have

to take it easy today, as we take a look at now from at&t park, the view of san francisco. all of that sunshine, beautiful start to the day. and at least for now, temperatures are comfortable. we will continue to see the temperatures rising as we go through the rest of the morning. but we start out at 56 degrees in san francisco. the east bay at 55 degrees. as we go into the north bay, 75 in calistoga. napa at 54. san rafael at 51 degrees. windows are open now but you'll be closing them and turning the air conditioner on as we gao into the lunch hour. san jose, 81 degrees already by noon. we'll see the temperatures continuing to reach into the upper 80s by today and not much of a wind. all of the stagnant air and high heat creates high ozone levels and makes the air quality very low for the east bay, especially, where it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups, meaning if you have breathing

problems, asthma, you don't want to spend a lot of time outdoors, especially during the hottest times was the day. the south bay will have moderate to unhealthy amounts of ozone levels in the air. and the north bay and peninsula also barely high. as the temperatures reach into the low 90s today, morgan hill up to 92 degrees. half moon bay will be the spot to cool off, 68 degrees. mid-70s for san francisco. not bad there. but up to 92 in santa rosa and napa. 96 in antioch. as we continue on with this dangerous heat across the southwest, as the air sinks, it warms. as this intense heat continues to build, we're talking 111 degrees today in las vegas as well as palm springs. fresno will be up to 104 degrees. in the tri valley, we'll have temperatures into the lower 90s. the average high is 81 degrees. and the hottest day looks to be saturday, where we top out at 95

degrees there. san francisco, also well above average. when the average temperature is at 67 degrees, we'll be at 75 on saturday. as we look ahead to the weekend, unfortunately there is no relief from this heat. the valleys will continue to have highs in the mid-90s. san francisco, mid-70s. the peninsula, up to 86 degrees on saturday. we'll be tracking more of this heat likely into next week. let's head over to mike, a jam in hayward. a jam in hayward and a build in the maze, as well as the berkeley curve. we'll show you overall, the bay showing a pretty typical pattern like we saw at the maze. we'll see more traffic kicking in over the next 45 minutes all over the place. right now we'll start with southbound 880, still slow past the earlier crash. that motorcycle crash on the shoulder, over at a street southbound, slows past the scene. building towards the coliseum but nothing dramatic right
