she was just starting out. now she's back and you're pregnant -- >> again. i'm pregnant every time she's here. we'll get to meghan in a bit. our top stories and problems inside donald trump's campaign. his fund-raising is lagging far behind hillary clinton's, that news coming on the heels of the sudden firing of his top aide. we'll talk to mr. trump in a . first, peter alexander is at trump tower here in new york. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah, good morning to you. donald trump insists he is not beholden to big money but this morning there's new evidence that he faces a significant disadvantage when it comes to campaign fund-raising. also this morning, he's also trailing badly in the polls. our survey monkey tracking poll shows donald trump trailing clinton by six points. 48 to 42. there's a new swing state poll out by quinnipiac that shows in ohio and pennsylvania trump and clinton are basically neck and neck. but in the bath ground of florida, trump trails clinton by eight points.

>> reporter: donald trump's fund-raising is so poor, it's jaw-dropping. raising $3 million in may and ending the month with barely $1 million in the bank. the kind of numbers that would be weak for a congressional campaign, not to mention a run at the white house. compare that to hillary clinton at a celebrity-studded fund-raiser monday night with stars like jennifer lopez,dicap jessica parker. she outraised trump 9 to 1, ending the month with $42 million on hand. trump's campaign writing checks to a wide range of businesses. more than $420,000 to rent mar-a-largo but not a single cent spent on tv hours. hours after firing controversial campaign manager corey lewandowski, trump downplayed the dismissal. >> he's a good guy. he's a friend of mine. but i think it's time for a different kind of campaign. >> reporter: lewandowski who has

admitted to a strict confidentiality agreement with trump relating to nbc news remains strictly loyal. >> i respect mr. trump. i respect him more so than any other person who entered this race. >> reporter: and ducking repeated questions about his firing. did donald trump have the courtesy to tell you you were fired or did someone else tell you that? >> look, i had a great conversation with mr. trump. and i can tell you this, it's been a privilege for me to serve the last 19 months on this campaign. >> reporter: sources close to >> reporter: sources close to the campaign say trump's children confronted him urging their father to oust lewandowski. is it a course correction or just cosmetic? some republicans are alarmed by what they see as trump's lack of campaign discipline, reiterating his idea to ban muslims after the orlando massacre and relentlessly targeting a federal judge for his mexican heritage. campaign manager paul manafort now taking the helm.

did it come down to a personal matter that your family members did not want him in the campaign anymore? >> that's absolutely true. ivanka has great respect for him. we like him. hey, matt -- >> you just said something. you said that's absolutely true that ivanka didn't want him in the campaign? >> no, no, i was reversing it. i said that it's true that ivanka really respects corey, and she likes corey. and i read all of the reports about the children. it's nonsense. >> you said everything is great with corey and yet the undeniable fact is that corey has been fired from the campaign? >> well, we're going in a different direction because is this now different. i was very lean, i won in a landslide, biggest vote in history, won in landslides and corey was absolutely perfect for that. to this day, you saw his

interviews yesterday. we have a great relationship but we're going in a different relationship. >> corey was the guy that said let trump be trump. does this signal with him out that you're not going do let trump be trump anymore that you'll change your tony. >> i don't think so, matt. i think i have to be who i am. i don't want to be a phony like hillary clinton where she writes stuff up by high-priced talent. i don't want to be that. new polls came out. with the horrible few weeks from the press. the press is treating me unbelievable unfairly. and with all of that bad press i've had over the last couple of weeks, believe me, that's manufactured press. 100%. i've had days where there should have been good deals, good days, and the press comes out negatively. with all of the press, i'm there. cnn just announced the poll.

i'm just there. pennsylvania, ohio, we're practically even. >> but you mentioned they're dead heat but ohio in fact is tied. let's talk about another measure in the last month, campaign fund-raising, it came out and shows you a $1.3 million raised -- on hand, excuse me, on hand, compared to $42 million in hillary clinton's war chest. now, you understand money and the importance of money in the campaign. and it's a sign of whether people are supporting you. how do you explain those lackluster results? >> let me just tell you this. i understand money better than anybody. i understand it far better than hillary and i'm way up on the economy when it comes to questions about the economy. we have a party, i'm having more difficulty, frankly, with some of the people in the party than the democrats. because they're just -- they don't want to come on. they will probably, eventually, come on. honestly, if they don't, it's just fine. i can win it either way.

i may be better off winning it the opposite way than the new traditional way. savannah, i've raised a lot of money, but you also have to have some help from the party. i've raised a lot of money. $12 million this weekend. i was in texas. i was in arizona. i was in las vegas. we raised a lot of money this weekend. i made like four or five stops and i'm raising that money for the party. >> but you -- >> matt, excuse me. if it gets to that point, i'll do what i did in the primaries i spent $55 million of my own money to raise money. 55. i may do that again in the general election. >> but you have -- >> excuse me, matt. i have a lot of cash, and i may do it in the general election. but it would be nice to have help from the parties. >> you just mentioned the parties. paul ryan, the speaker of the house after hemming and hawing said he would vote four then on

sunday on "meet the press," he sounded as if he was waffling a bit. he told republicans that they should vote their conscience which is not the same as get out there and vote for our nominee who is donald trump. does he have problems now? >> well, first of all, he didn't say support me, he endorsed me. so did mitch mcconnell endorsed me. with that being said, i'd like to see great support. and if i don't have great support, i'll go a different route. look, i want -- everyone said you could never get to 1,237 delegates. you know that better than anybody. they said you can't get to 1,237 because there's 17 people in the race. i ended up by 1570, way above the 1237 that people said you couldn't get. now, new polls are coming out, despite the fact i'm being

treated horribly, horribly, by the press i'm practically even with hillary clinton and she had the two best weeks of her life. >> donald trump, we appreciate it. >> thank you very much. the heat wave is baking the midwest. wildfires across that region, nbc's miguel almaguer is there. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this is typically the time of day when fires lay down in the early morning hours, but we can smell this fire on the move at this hour as the temperatures here heat up. overnight, southern california looked and felt like an oven, baking and burning. the west is on fire. new blazes are breaking out every day the smoke-filled skyline seen for miles. >> mandatory evacuation. >> reporter: with hundreds of evacuations in place, this morning more than 3,000 firefighters are battling nine large wildfires.

the golden state is red hot. >> the brush right now is so dry, it's very aggressive. >> reporter: fueling the fire is the heat. brutal temps for 15 million people. 123 degrees near palm springs, a new daily record. in phoenix, a blistering 115. firefighters scrambling to dozens of emergencies. >> sounds like it's heat-related. >> reporter: at least five losing their life to heat-related illness. many are bicyclists and hikers. not enough water and too much sun. >> they're still up there. >> reporter: with water stations popping up and power grids being tested, now, the stifling heat wave is packing another punch today. on the fire lines, it's the heat and winds that could deliver that knockout blow.

controversy of release of transcripts of 911 calls made bit orlando gunman and what was initially left out. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: for the first time since the shooting, south orange behind me, where the nightclub is back open. the fbi is reiterating that authorities have found no evidence to suggest that the gunman was directed by any foreign terror group but, instead, radicalize ed domestically. this morning the words of omar mateen to a 911 dispatcher sinking in. i pledge of allegiance to abu bakr al baghdadi of the islamic state. more than after a half hour of gunshots, in arabic, he says, praise be to god and prayers of peace be upon the prophet of god. i'm in orlando and i did the shootings. >> he did so in a chilling deliberate, calm manner. >> reporter: but the redacted transcript omitted any mention of islamic.

>> we're not going to propagate any rhetoric. paul ryan said editing this is preposterous. fbi releasing an unredacted version. calling the controversy an unnecessary distraction. according to that time line, and three our calls of hostage negotiators, he identifies himself as an islamic soldier and falsely says he has explosives in a vehicle outside. at 4:21 they remove victims. at 4:29 he threatens to strap four explosive vests to victims still inside the club. at 5:02 s.w.a.t. team storm the building. two law enforcement sources tell nbc news ballistic evidence so far shows all victims were shot by mateen and not by friendly fire. >> those killings are on the suspect and the suspect alone, in my mind. >> reporter: among those killed

49-year-old cancer survivor. brenda marquez. >> she was the mom everyone wants. >> reporter: her son isaiah was with her inside the club. >> i never thought her life would be ended right in front of my eyes. >> reporter: in "the washington post" a man claims he reported mateen to the fbi in 2014 after mateen told him he was watching videos of anwar al awlaki. the imam who helped radicalize the ft. hood gunman. while the fbi did not identify the source, the agency said they looked into mateen, finding nothing and closed the case. >> reporter: last check, 21 people are still hospitalized, 4 in critical condition. loretta lynch is expected to visit with families and first investigators later today. >> thank you very much. let's turn to al and get the rest of your forecast. >> we have some showers in the pacific northwest. we're going to show you lightning video in the next half

arrived at this base in antarctica. they refueled and ready to fly. we're about to show you web cam images of what this base is like right now, the bleak conditions this team is facing. a perilous ten-hour lies ahead. the gloomy web cam shows you a station. right now antarctica polar nights, six months long. the team will be flying in virtual darkness. a tiny twin-engine plane carrying a pilot, co-pilot, engineer and medic. if they're able to reach the national science station's south pole station, they will land in the dark on skis, evacuating the sixth unnamed worker. if they don't make it, a second plane will launch a search and rescue operation. >> the weather down in the antarctic can change quickly, so you're fighting against some of the unknown down there.

>> reporter: polar explorer traces the dangerous routes. he says the pilots know the risks. >> these pilots and the crew are the best in the world to mitigate that risk. they have accepted this. they would not do this if they didn't think they could make it safely. >> reporter: this morning they are set to take off, waiting for a break in the harsh weather. a race against time to the bottom of the earth. a check on the weather online suggests maybe, maybe in the next few days there will be an opportunity for them to take off, matt. just to underscore, the weather where they are going is 70 degrees below. >> that's a difficult situation. thank you very much. new fallout this morning over bernie sanders' decision to stay in the presidential race, even though hillary clinton is the presumptive democratic nominee. that's because it's a choice that is costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars every day. nbc's kristin welker has more on that story. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. bernie sanders looks a lot more like a senator than a

presidential candidate this week. back on capitol hill to vote on gun legislation, but he is still in the race. that is costing taxpayers. it's also raising fresh scrutiny about his decision to decide to stay in, despite the fact that hillary clinton effectively clinched the nomination weeks ago. senator sanders back on capitol hill monday, surrounded by secret service because technically he's still a presidential candidate. sanders' detail often on display, staked outside his home where they even built a small watch station, and seen during his recent meeting with hillary clinton. >> move to the side. >> senator sanders -- >> reporter: defending the candidate on the trail, like when animal rights protesters tried to rush the stage in may. sanders' decision to stay in the race is costing taxpayers an estimated $38,000 a day for secret service protection. with 35 days until the convention, that could add up to $1.3 million if sanders goes all the way to philadelphia.

>> are you wasting tax dollars? >> reporter: monday he avoided shouted questions on the controversy, first raised by "the washington post." the secret service and sanders campaign declined to comment, but some taxpayers are fuming at the candidate. >> that's a lot of unnecessary spending. >> reporter: whose campaign was railed on wasteful spending. >> because we have the most wasteful, dysfunctional system in the world. >> reporter: while all that is only adding to the pressure from within the democratic party, for sanders to suspend his campaign, top surrogates state defend him. >> i really wish people would not just focus on the secret service part of this, but focus in on the broader service that senator sanders is providing. >> reporter: and the candidate himself, who is calling for changes to the democratic primary process, recently told supporters in an online conference, he has more work to do before bowing out. >> we must continue our grassroots effort to create the america we know we can become.

i'm..==topvo== the bay area says odbye to n jose police officer michael a good tuesday morning at 8:56. i'm sam brock. the bay area saying good-bye to officer michael katherman. he was killed last week when his motorcycle collided with a minivan in san jose. thousands of people will come together to say good-bye to officer katherman. it is no doubt an emotional day for the city of san jose, for the local law enforcement community and for the bay area. his funeral will begin at 11:00 this morning at the s.a.p.
