"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. progress is a relative term. we are seeing some progress yesterday. >> a couple of degrees. this weekend it gets hot once again and those temperatures ramp right back up. as we get a look at what's happening now, how about 48 degrees in the north way? that will feel nice and cool. and 56 now in the east bay as you head out. highs reaching 80. 56 in san francisco, 86 in the north bay. still a big spread in the temperature range across the bay area. we'll talk about a very hot

weekend ahead. let's head over to mike now. looks like a good start to the morning drive. >> really good. you see not showing any slowing all around the bay except there. the altamont pass. you can't get away from that. 587, you get more crowded in the afternoon. right now is a great time to head over there and catch the sunrise. live look shows you the volume of traffic in san jose light coming toward us. that's 101 and 280 interchange. no problem. back to you. to developing news in san francisco. two bicyclists killed in hit-and-run crashes. >> there is a search for the driver responsible for one of those instances. this happened around 6:00 last night. steph chuang joining us live. >> good morning. police here say they are working

with very strong leads but stopping short of saying they know who they are looking for. two cyclists killed. in a span of three hours in the city. both drivers tried to take off running. emergency crews could not save the woman in her 20s who was riding in golden gate park lastç night. the driver crossed into oncoming traffic to pass a vehicle hitting the bicyclist head on and through her about 50 feet. police are searching for a second vehicle connected to this case possibly driven by the same man. witnesses say he was speeding. >> two guys in a car heading west bound going like 50, 60 miles per hour and ran right into a lady riding her bike in the bike lane. >> the speed limit is 25 miles

per hour. just 2 1/2 hours later around 8:30 last night there was another fatal hit-and-run. a driver ran a red light at 7th and howard killing a man who was riding his bike there. that driver tried to run away but officers caught and arrest him. as popularity of cycling grows here, there are 83,000 bikes in the city a day here. they made changes in there 2012, introducing a protective bike way. it did seem to increase the feeling of safety, still tragedy happening and not the case with reducing speeds last night. live here in san francisco, stephanie chuang, today in the bay. 5:03, the church continues for a gunman who opened fire in the east bay. the victim is hospitalized in critical condition. our nbc chopper was over the scene in emeryville last night.

it happened near 40th and san pablo avenue. officers have been interviewing witnesses. right now, no one is in custody. developing news on capitol hill that's been going on since yesterday morning. the political standoff under way. right now house democrats are staging a sit-in entering its second day. >> this is one of the actics law makers are using to push for a vote on gun control. kris sanchez has been monitoring the fallout. they are standing their ground after everyone else went home. >> to be specific, u.s. congress is officially on break until july 5th. some of those democrats remain on the house floor despite that. here is a live piece inside congress where law makers are still speaking about the republicans' refusal to talk about gun control. >> they turn off the cameras and they go out and the public can

wanted to talk about. >> and the conversation continues. it is 5:05. after months of negotiations and hours of heated debate. san francisco police commission voted to approve a new use of force policy. provesers shall strive to use minimal use of force and deescalating events will become the focus of training. commissioners and police officers association say they agree on 80% of the documents. >> shall deescalate is so important to immediately move forward on. the fact that is going to be held hostage to other issues. you have those rights but this department needs the ability to move forward on this change as soon as possible. >> the issues holding up consensus are policies of shooting at cars and using choke style restraints. it's called a meet and confer. that's when city leaders and the police association work to reach

an agreement on every issue. a hearing in a vallejo kidnapping case is so bizarre it was once thought to be a hoax. now the case could be tossed out. matthew muller broke into a home last year. investigators say he kidnapped huskins. today her lawyer will try to have all evidence thrown out. he claims the evidence was obtained during an illegal search of his dog phone. a dog groomer sit to enter a plea today. he is accused of animal cruelty after a dog died in his hair. the 38-year-old was arrested last month coming after a 1-year-old dachshund died suddenly while under his care. the dog suffered a broken ribs

and punctured lung. owners have not commented on this case on advice of their orrins. new details, the party bus driver who had dozens of teenagers with alcohol and drugs on his bus faced a judge the first time. investigators say onboard that bus they found 33 minors, 30 bottles of hard liquor and a jar of marijuana. he will be arraigned tomorrow. there has been five burglaries or attempted burglaries in neighboring orenda. a homeowner interrupted two burglars. police are warning people to be sure to lock their doors and windows. one man died and a woman hospitalized because of this fire in santa rosa.

it triggered evacuation of a neighborhood. they could hear explosions from a large quantity of am nation that caught fire. they say this started in garage of the house. they could not get to the front of the home because of live power lines. san francisco leaders are desperately trying to get relief from those put out fires. the hardware store and neighboring building are set to be demolished. city leaders are trying to get access to relief fund but there is very little money for the dozens of poem who no long er have a place to call home. it feels like summer. >> it does. especially if you're away from the coast. this is where we'll have temperatures heating up. as we get a live look outside as the sunrises, we have

angeles had to make an emergency landing to tucson after a passenger made a threat to a flight crew. she snapped a photo of a jet that had to escort the plane to a landing. the passenger told a flight attendant another passenger threatened them with a gun. the bay area wife of the orlando gunman wants a refund for three plane tickets purchased for the family for a flight to san francisco. they bought the tickets the day before the shooting at the pulse night club. sources tell nbc news she called the unnamed airline and told them her husband died and requested a refund. she has not received a refund for those tickets. he bought three tickets to san francisco. the family was planning to visit her ailing mother in rodeo. president obama is coming back to town but not for the

typical reason he does. no big money fund-raiser but he is speaking at the global entrepreneur summit in stanford. he is spending the night in san jose. the speech at stanford is tomorrow morning. u.s. leaders have invited more than 700 entrepreneurs from around the globe to attend this summit. today presidential candidate bernie sanders will hold a news conference in new york after acknowledging he will likely not be the nominee. it's the closest he's come conceding in this long primary race. his acknowledgement comes two weeks after former secretary of state plitt was projected to be the presumptive nominee. today's speech will not be a concession but will address the kinds of policies he will be pushing to keep the party -- they want the party to enact. about 10, 15 minutes ago we

clear start and temperatures in the near 50s. upper 50s for the south bay. let's go into the east bay to see what it looks like from our weather underground sites. 59 in brentwood and alameda. 54. after this school start we have the air conditioners off and turning it back on today. as the south bay makes it into the upper 80s to low 90s. san mateo will be at 75. outer sun set a nice place to cool off 66. 90 in fairfield. one of the hot spots will be the delta brentwood. >> there are not many heat warnings, but intense heat the next couple of days with temperatures over 110 degrees. here we are looking at low to mid 90s for parts of the south bay into the tri-valley as well as north bay. it looks like it pretty much

holds on as we go into early next week. if you're heading out to the sonoma raceway the next couple of days, be mindful it will be hot. make sure you drink lots of water and wear sun block. if you are going to the parade on sunday for pride week, we'll have beautiful weather in san francisco by afternoon in the low 70s. a look at all the microclimates with highs reaching into the upper 80s to low 90s for the tri-valley as well as the north bay and south bay. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. let's head over to mike to see what's happening on the roads. >> let's look at the bay bridge. the big backup on the left. we saw just a few minutes with no backup. cash lanes shorting to show that backup again as we are getting ready for the burst of traffic. the map shows no problem for the maze. there is the freeway. easy flow of traffic. across all the bridges right now, we are watching that dog

woman in her 20s who was cycling westbound owe the driver of a white honda came racing down the street, crossed over into oncoming traffic and hit her. the car struck the woman and threw her about 50 feet. witnesses say the driver slowed down momentarily then took off in a hurry. >> seeing it happen in front of you is heartbreaking, especially as a cyclist. >> authorities eventually found the suspect's car abandoned only a short distance away. police are searching for a second second vehicle connected to the same case. anyone with information is urged to contact police. just a couple of hours later, another cyclist killed in a hit-and-run. this happening 8:30 at night in so mania. a driver hit a man at 7th and howard. the driver took off running. officers arrested him a short time later. >> changes will be made to san

leaders of thgily schoodistrict it's 5:43 on a thursday morning. leaders of the gilroy school district are in the hot seat. gloria allred filed more lawsuits. a teacher sent them inappropriate text messages. the student's mother said she informed school officials but nothing was done. allred said the district needs to be held accountable. >> negligent supervision, intentional affliction of emotional distress. sexual harassment and gender jinls. >> he was arrested in april aljedly luring children online. the superintendent and spokeswoman did not return our phone calls.

you hear this advice all the time. if you see something, say something. right now a bay area family and investigators are hoping witnesses will come forward after a warriors' fan fell 50 feet at oracle arena. he is recovering from surgery this morning after his family says he was pushed from the upper level concourse. his family says a fight broke out and their son was simply pushed. >> he's asking me what happened to him. >> does he have any recollection? >> he told me remembers a fight. he don't remember nothing else. >> that incident is under investigation. they have video showing the alleged fight. the man's family says they are considering legal action saying the upper level concourse needs more safe guards. more funding to fight the zika virus shut down at the house yesterday but before that happened, the house did vote earlier to approve $1.1 billion
