today in the bay, sharon katsudo, this is now the 23rd homicide last year. last year it, we were only about ten. >> that's right, sam and laura. they only had about half the number of homicides in san jose at the same time last year. this is pretty shocking. especially to neighbors here. i spoke to a neighbor here, he said this is a very quiet, normally quiet nay boeighborhoo. but then this happened and it is shocking to him as well as the neighbors here. police say about 9:30 last night, they responded to a report of shots fired in the area, and a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car. police found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound and he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> we don't have any information right now on a suspect or suspects. nobody is in custody it. we're in the very preliminary

stages of the investigation trying to locate witnesses and gather evidence. >> reporter: the identity of the victim has yet to be released. we're hearing that he lived possibly at the end of this block, that is what a neighbor tells us. police have yet to confirm the name of the victim, and where the victim once lived. back here live, again, a lot of people waking up this morning in this neighborhood, driving off to work, wondering what's going on, zipping by us, not having many comments, but one neighbor, again, saying this is very unusual for this area. again, if you have any information that can help, you're asked to call the san jose police department. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, liver in the bay. it could be a scene that could be familiar this summer, a wildfire inching dangerously close to homes in the south bay. they worked into the night and into the morning along highway 17. flames erupted in redwood estates yesterday afternoon. after a car caught fire and ignited a nearby bush.

fire spread to about two and a half acres. firefighters evacuated nearby neighborhoods as a precaution. one southbound lane of highway 17 will remain closed through the morning commute. breaking news overnight. the sports world is mourning the passing of a legendary college basketball coach. word of pass summit's death came out within just the last couple of hours. summit is the winningest coach ever in division one college basketball. we're taking a live look at a pat summit statue from tennessee, where she coached the university of tennessee lady volleyball for almost 40 years, in the process, winning eight national championships. summit also notched 1,098 career victories at her time in tennessee. she had been suffering from alzheimer's and turned 64 two weeks ago. just into the newsroom, golf and the olympics, jason day, the number one rangked golfer in th

no one died in that shooting. technology played a key role in gambling in a drug bust in the east bay. sheriff's deputy served a search warrant for gambling yesterday morning. part of the operation, they had a drone over head, and used it to follow the suspect. >> while this was up, we actually spotted a suspect fleeing out the back, we were able to follow him and then have responding deputies detain him without incident. so that was really handy. >> officers say the garage had been converted into a casino with finally gaming machines. 14 people were arrested. they were tipped off by neighbors who complained about odd activity. south bay leaders looking for a new solution to the growing homes population in the south bay. today, the city council will consider extending measures to provide morehousing. they want churches to open up their doors for up to 35 days a year, without permits. council members are also going to discuss a plan to put up

treasure island, it will cause a slow down coming through the tower. look at the back up at the bay bridge toll plaza. we see the slow down right here, 580 and 24 coming in toward the toll plaza itself. back to you. thank you very much, mike. developing story this morning. san jose police at this hour is investigating the city's 23rd homicide of the year. when officers responded to calls of a shooting, they found a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car. he suffered a gunshot wound, dying a short time later. there have been no arrests. the victim was found on cape aston court. today, sharon is there gathering more from police. she'll join us from a live police in about 20 minutes. laura, more than 15 hours later, firefighters in the south bay are still watching a small brush fired that burned near los catos. >> santa cruz mountains this morning, bob, one lane of 17

will remain close i understand. >> reporter: until around 10:00, yes, good morning to you, law ra and sam. the sound bound lane of 17, couple of miles past the redwood estates shut down because during this fire fight yesterday, they realized there were some trees that were in danger of falling down, so they want to take care of that. let's take you high above the santa cruz mountains. you can see what's left of this wildfire. you might be able to see a red stripe down there, that's some of the fire retardant that was dropped on top of the homes there, as this fire crept dangerously close to roughly 30 structures. now, we did hear from cal fire this morning, they have three engines and a hand crew down on the scene to make sure the fire does not flare-up again. now, the fire started yesterday afternoon around 3:00 because of a car fire that was along highway 17. spread to around two and a half acres, triggered a large response from cal fire, 200 firefighters, plus as least one

chopper and one wing aircraft that conducted air drops. highway 17 was shut down at one point. causing a traffic headache for people trying to travel between san jose and santa cruz. one lane of the southbound direction did reopen. one lane at southbound, still shut down. the fire did at one point threaten 30 structures, as i mentioned, forced some people to evacuate, but the firefighters were able to stop the fire and save all of the homes. >> it's horrible. again, i'm glad there was no property damage. it is an inconvenience, but if that's all it was, it is not the end of the world. >> reporter: and we want to show you some video from a separate fire. this was in the east bay along highway 84 near pleasanton. again, we show it to you to illustrate as a reminder that we are in the fire season. the conditions are very dry out there. reporting live here along highway 17, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you very much. as you suggest, wildfires are

popping up over over the state. some people who lost everything that's burning near bakersfield are returning to where their homes once stood. others are still barred from returning, as the flames continue to a rage. they burned 45,000 acres in total. they built a line, about 45% of the fire. for many living in the devastated communities, all they have left are memories. >> it is going to be tough and a long time for everybody to, you know, get everything back, but you know, we will rebuild and be the tight community we've always been. >> in one way i can understand, but when you get in the homeowners shoes, on their side of the fence, it is very sad. >> that fire has been burning since thursday, consuming more than 200 structures in the process. san francisco sheriff's deputy missing pistol turned up at a homicide last year. according to a news group,

authorities say the gun was not used in the killing. the homicide happened in fairfield and the deputy only reported the gun missing after investigators called him to tell him they discovered it. laura, this raised eyebrows after two patrol suvs burst into flames. the oakland police department is asking if it stumbled on a safety issue. on safety night an officer crashed one of the ford interceptors into a pole during a car chase. you see the car on fire. the suv quickly igniting. less than 24 hours later, another one burst into blaflame. they're asking the chp to help. >> we've asked for assistance from them, having their traffic investigators assist us with identifying what caused the fire. how can we prevent this. >> so investigators say they'll look into a design problem or whether added equipment may have made them unsafe.

many of the police departments use the same cars. former gilroy high scho schoolteacher luring children by posing as a women. he made his first court appearance yesterday. he is charged with 20 sex crimes, ages 14 to 16, some of them are his former students. >> mr. lee pretended to be a teenaged female an contacted young teenage males, and started conversations with them for the purposes of engaging in sexual conduct through the internet or through messenger services, and soliciting child pornography and pictures of these young minor victims. >> he was taken back to the jail yesterday after the judge increased his bail amount to nearly $500,000. last week, civil rights lawyer, gloria alred filed a lawsuit,

saying the school didn't act after being reported by a parent. three men sitting inside a jail this morning after san francisco undercover police officers busted them after they were robbing tourists. this happened in russian hill. here is surveillance video which shows them hopping out of their car and then trying to rob three women. you see them walking down the street in the corner of your shot there. one of the women took off running. the other two had their bags stolen. as the men tried to drive off with the goods, undercover police officers, finding a stolen gun on the suspect. >> the gun is scary. the guns, we think americans are a bit dumb because of their gun laws. >> well, they traced the stolen gun, it is from louisiana. those undercover officers were in the area at the time, just investigating car break-ins. 6:37 right now.

here are the top stories onbbaea welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories. first i man found shot to death inside a car. live in the neighborhood, sharon, are police saying anything about a suspect? >> reporter: no, that's why neighbors are very concerned. neighbors say this is very -- usually a quiet neighborhood. but they're very shocked about what happened. and the suspect is still on the loose. we're told the victim possibly lived at the end of this block, but police have yet to confirm that. police say about 9:30 last night, they responded to a report of shots fired in the area of cape aston court. a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car. the police found the victim suffers from at least one gunshot wound and he was

pronounced dead at the scene. the identity of the victim has yet to be released. this is the 23rd homicide in san jose so far this year, about double the amount of homicides the city saw by the same time last year. detectives were out here all night and just left about an hour ago. we see many people driving in and out of the area the street was closed off for a while last night and people are just returning home this morning. very concerned that the suspect is still on the loose. reporting live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda, live in the bay. breaking overnight, the sports world is mourning the passing of a legendary coach. word of pat summit's death came out in the last couple of hours. summit is the winningest coach ever in division 1 college basketball. she coached the university of tennessee for almost four decades northbound process, her team won 8 national championships. summit notched 1,098 career victories. she had been suffering from

alzheimer's in recent years and turned only 64, two weeks ago. 6:57. emphatic no last night, the city refused for the coal shipping hub, which would have been the largest on the west coast. despite supporters of the coal plant making noise, oakland city council members voted to ban bringing coal by rail to the army base. it would have been shipped around the world. council members argued the negative global impact outweighed the prospects of thousands of new jobs. several south bay leaders are looking for new solutions to an expanding homes population. today, the city council will extend measures at providing more short-term housing. among the options, supporters want churches to open up their doors to the homes up to 35 days a year without permits. council members are also going to discuss a plan to put up
