trump trailing hillary clinton by eight points, 49% to 41%. nbc's kristen welker has the latest on this. kristen, good morning. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. with donald trump lagging in almost every poll, his campaign is trying to turn the page beefing up his staff and now looking at the possibility of softening one of his most divisive policies. trying to get his campaign back on track, there are signs this morning that donald trump could be backing away from one of his most controversial positions, a ban on muslims entering the united states. one of trump's policy directors now telling "the wall street journal" that trump would only suspend temporarily immigration from areas. that have been a major source for terrorists and their supporters. overnight, his spokesperson denying there was any change in policy but acknowledging the need for more details. >> mr. trump is going to refine

his policy putting out more specific details which everyone has been asking for, but there has been no change. >> reporter: trump first announced the ban after the san bernardino terror attacks in december and planned to ban all muslims. >> donald j. trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the united states until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. >> reporter: the policy may have helped him win the primary but our latest nbc news/"wall street journal" poll shows 49% of registered voters oppose the muslim ban indicating it could hurt him in the general election. this comes as hillary clinton is taking steps to further unify her party. in ohio on monday firing up democrats in her first joint appearance with senator elizabeth warren. clinton is eyeing warren as a possible vp pick. on monday there was no sign of the policy differences that used to divide them.

closest aide will be questioned under oath. nbc's andrea mitchell has the latest. good morning. >> dueling reports this morning. on the house committee investigating the benghazi attacks in 2012 while hillary clinton was serving as secretary of state. an issue donald trump has repeatedly raised during the campaign. the section of the 800-page republican report obtained by nbc news sheds new light on the breakdown in the military response to the benghazi attacks and the failure to have an evacuation plan. among the revelations, the report says 35 americans were saved not by local militias the u.s. thought were allies but fled but by former military officers from moammar gadhafi's regime. the dictator that the u.s. helped topple one year before. why was ambassador chris stevens in such a dangerous place?

the primaries and will not work in the general election? >> it's an admission that having a shoot from the hip, fly by the seat of your pants campaign is not going to get the job done come november. you still have republicans rebuking you week after week after week, you can't sign on donors, you can't sign on staff and you probably can't beat hillary clinton. >> nicole, thank you very much. good to see you. there's a new twist this morning in the crash of egyptair flight 804. french authorities opening a manslaughter investigation. nbc's bill neely has more on that for us. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. there's a strong chance that the mystery of flight 804 can be solved. the flight recorders were recovered two weeks ago. they were damaged but now they've been cleaned of sea salt and memory chips extracted and data from the final moments of the plane is on the flight recorder.

we're sure of it they say. they're now working on the memory chip of the cockpit voice recorder and then all that data will be analyzed in egypt. also as you say, french authorities now say there is no evidence of terrorism and they're not looking into that opening instead an investigation into involuntary homicide, an accident. remember, no terrorist group has said it bombed the plane. for the families of the 66 onboard, the agony is prolonged but they may know more to explain why their loved ones died. we want to go back to the video we showed you at the top of the show. a bp natural gas plant rocked by an explosion overnight in mississippi. there were two employees on duty at the time but they were in an explosion proof room. they were not injured. officials say residents who live nearby were asked to leave their homes as a precaution. an investigation into how that

explosion occurred now under way. to that sad news overnight that legendary women's basketball coach pat summitt has passed away. she coached university of tennessee women's basketball team to eight national championships. she was the winningest coach in division 1 college basketball history. summit was diagnosed with early onset dementia back in 2011 and stepped down after coaching the lady vols for one more season. that year she was the recipient of the presidential medal of freedom. her son tyler issued a statement saying his mother died peacefully in knoxville surrounded by those who love her most. pat summitt was 64 years old. >> women who play for her have nothing but incredible things to say about her. we want to talk about a consumer alert involving a very big recall. ikea recalling tens of millions of chests and dressers.

because of the risk they can tip over injuring or killing small children. nbc's tom costello has been following the story for more than a year. tom, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the consumer product safety commission says every two weeks in this country a child dies under falling tvs and furniture and now ikea stopped selling a unit it says is especially prone to that. it's important. it's asking parents if you have one of these dressers or chests, stop using those unless they're anchored to the wall. the numbers are heartbreaking. every 24 minutes a child is injured from falling furniture or tvs. every two weeks, a child dies. this video from the consumer product safety commission shows how fast it can happen. now, one of the nation's biggest furniture retailers is announcing a major recall. 29 million pieces of ikea furniture most sold under ikea's malm name.

>> children see something they're trying to get that's been left on. they start to climb. the unit falls over. we've had deaths associated with these types of unit because of it and 33,000 emergency room visits a year. >> reporter: six deaths linked to ikea furniture, three in just the past 2 1/2 years including a 2 year old who pulled his dresser down on himself. >> i didn't see him anywhere. i went over and kind of pulled everything apart and i saw the little top of his head trapped between the dresser and the edge of the bed. >> reporter: the dresser was not anchored to the wall. this morning ikea is asking anyone with a malm chest or dresser to stop using it if it's not anchored to wall. the company will send technic n technicians to do the work or provide a full refund if customers return the furniture.

>> we would like to ask as a customer to make sure that all chest of drawers are properly attached to the wall. if not, take them out of the room. >> reporter: for the family now suing ikea, every day still brings heartbreak but the ikea recall is his legacy. >> this is the worst thing that's ever happened in our lives. >> reporter: a lot of families say their landlords if they're renting won't let them anchor something to the wall because they don't want holes in the wall but safety advocates say there's no excuse. you can patch the hole later. don't take a risk on your child's safety and they say if you can't anchor to the wall, bring it back to ikea. back to you. >> great information. tom, thank you very much. to the desperate rescue effort under way this morning to save a massive blue whale tangled in fishing line off the southern california coast. steve patterson is in los angeles with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: the young whale was spotted about four miles off the coast by people on a whale watching trip. rescuers made at least six attempts to cut the lines attached to at that -- that

whale but they were unsuccessful so today a team of experts will attempt again. a rescue is under way for a massive blue whale. a team of experts trying to figure out how to free the young whale tangled in fishing lines off the coast of florida. -- of california. a crew on a whale watching cruise spotted the whale in distress. it's large tail caught in fishing traps meant for lobsters or crabs. >> the tail is held down by a trap below the whale. they returned to the whale with a rescue team who worked to cut the whale free using a knife on the 25-foot pole. >> we got pretty close. i would say that we were within six inches. >> reporter: as dust fell, the whale disappeared into the sea. >> that's when the whale just decided that was it. he had enough.

he wasn't going to let us anywhere near it and just vanished. >> reporter: experts say it's rare for blue whales to get tangled in fishing gear because they don't usually search for good so close to the shore but noaa reports 40 entanglements since january. southern who is trained as the traffic force says officials are hoping that if the whale is found again they can renew efforts to set it free. >> that's all we were really trying to do is get the worst of it all so that the whale had a chance. >> reporter: officials are now asking boaters to be aware and look for the whale today. the whale has a bright orange buoy attached to it along with two smaller buoys. tamron? >> steve, thank you. sad. >> mr. roker, a check of the weather? >> we have a little cloudy sky out here in the northeast and it's part of a system that's going to cause probably some airport delays throughout the northeast later today. you can see wet weather stretching from new england all of the way down into the mid-atlantic states all part of a front we have a risk of strong storms today from plattsburgh,

identity theft. nbc's joe fryer is here to explain. hi, joe. >> we're talking about scammers taking total control of your cell phone. you can be in the middle of a phone conversation when suddenly the line goes dead because someone has transferred your number to another phone. the federal government says it's a growing problem. without your cell phone ever leaving your hands, your account can be hijacked, the phone number stolen. >> it really can happen to anyone. >> reporter: in fact it happened to lori who detailed her experience in a blog post. she first knew something was wrong when her phone and her husband's phone stopped working and she called her carrier. >> they said that it looked like we had some new iphones on our account. i said i didn't buy any new iphones. >> reporter: she discovered someone in ohio hundreds of miles from her home in pennsylvania used a fake i.d. with her name and the thief's photo. the thief asked for an upgrade

and walked out with new iphones both assigned their phone numbers. >> the idea that someone could steal my identity this way and that the phone company didn't do much to prevent it was quite unsett unsettling. >> reporter: similar crimes are surfacing across the country. >> we have seen them throughout the last couple years on the rise. >> reporter: last year in kansas, an alert at&t employee helped police arrest four suspects attempting to buy phones with fake i.d.s and in north carolina, a thief used a church's name to purchase 17 iphones. in january of 2013, the ftc received about 1,000 reports of this type of identity theft. three years later in january 2016, the number jumped to more than 2,600 reported thefts. that's just scratching the surface because this kind of i.d. theft is almost never reported. experts say criminals often get the information they need by simply combing the internet finding names linked to specific phone numbers and more. >> they'll use information often times to answer the security

questions, information they might be able to find on your facebook account for example. the name of your pet or the street that you grew up on. >> what are the best ways to prevent these thefts? be cautious about what information you post on social media sites and create an extra password or pin required before anyone can make changes to your mobile phone account. all of the major carriers offer this. >> these criminals are incredibly passionate about what they do. they're very creative. and if one of the attempts fails, they'll look for some other avenue to get in. >> the trade group representing the wireless industry says educational programs on cybersecurity are working pointing to a survey found more than 60% of consumers use the extra pins or passwords. an extra password no guarantee of protection. other steps you should take to prevent identity theft include using a strong password. don't use the same passwords for all of your accounts and carefully examine bills for your

jam for new babies and toddlers? >> i think there have always been patient who's love their pediatrician because they have grown up with them and wanted to stay. i remember i still went to see my pediatrician when i came home from medical school. >> reporter: for most people, it comes down to having a doctor you really trust with or without the lollipop. and something else that could be driving the trends, under the affordable care act, people still can stay under their parents' insurance plan until the age of 26. combine that with the shortage of general practitioners and many are just simply choosing to stick with the doctor they know and who know them best. >> natalie, thank you very much. dr. natalie azar is an nbc news medical contributor. good to see you. is there any real medical reason why you need to leave your pediatrician at the age of 21? >> that's a good question. that's really the million dollar question. i think the position of the three medical groups that are sort of have come together to give us a little bit of a recommendation on this is really that you want to ensure that

people are getting what we would think of as medically and devel developmentally care. age 21, you start cervical cancer screenings. >> are they trained for that? are they trained for patient care past the age of 21? >> right now, strictly speaking, pediatricians are trained to take care of people, including cholesterol and obesity and all the stuff you normally would think of as, you know, applying to adults until the age of 21. but, of course, as natalie pointed out with the affordable care act, prem extending coverage with pediatricians. certainly they can handle some of that. >> a good transition age between 18 and 21. let's talk about some other good reasons to change over. you're moving? >> you're moving. so if you think about 18 to 21, doesn't that fit really nicely with the time that you go to college? maybe you're not coming home for breaks all the time. maybe your insurance is changing. that is another reason you may

a develong story... a very good morning to you. it is 8:26. a developing story, police on the hunt for a gunman in a deadly late night shooting in the south bay. happened a little before 10:00 p.m. on cape ashton court in san jose. police say when officers responded it calls about shots fired, this found the victim in a car, slumped over the steering wheel. he died a short time later. the man who died has not been identified but our reporter tells us it is possible the victim lives in that neighborhood. so far police are not releasing that. want to check the morning commute to see how things are rolling out there. >> the peak of the commute now for most, we'll focus southbound 17, unexpectedly slow, heading

so many skills that they have developed during their work pause that are incredibly valuable in the workforce. things like budgeting, project management, negotiation skills. if they have kids, they know how to negotiate. >> one-third of highly qualified women leave their jobs at one point. of those, 93% intend to resume careers but a mere 40% ever find full-time jobs. reboot is just one of a handful of new programs popping up around the country aimed at fixing that and helping women get back up to speed. women like m.j. austin who took three years off whether her twin girls were born. >> i was worried i didn't have the skills. it was 3 1/2 years since i was in the workforce. i didn't know how much things had changed. >> today m.j. is a manager at paypal and she teaches moms to take on full time roles. this morning's seminar, resume

the dredging station is simple. the crucial thing is i add some garlic salt and pepper to my breadcrumbs. what people don't realize they do so often is they forget to season every layer of their dish which is really important. you don't want just the top to be seasoned. you want every layer to be seasoned. and then you just dredge into the flour. dip into the egg, shake off excess and dredge in your bread dru breadcrumbs. you have perfect chicken cut le cutlets. light olive oil. sunflower oil. nothing strong like extra virgin because it will burn up and be terrible. >> how long does it take to cook? >> about two minutes on each

side and that's it. what you do is once you have your beautiful cutlets ready, layer them with your favorite marinara sauce. you layer your sauce. do a trio of cheeses. why not. it's a parm. at the end of the day we love that from the mozzarella. i love sharpness. >> this is going in the oven look at what temperature for how long? >> doesn't matter until everything is golden and bubbly. and that's what it looks like for a side of spaghetti. >> going to eggplant parm. >> no garlic powder and no breadcrumbs. get yourself a firm egg appellant and slice it nice and thin. i've done a terrible job. the culinary crew does an amazing job.

a late-night decision in oakland making news around the world this morning, leaving some in oakland feeling a bit betrayed. at a packed hearing, council members voted unanimously to reject plans for a new coal-shipping hub that would have been the largest anywhere on the west coast. the council banned bringing colby rail to the former oakland army base which then would have been delivered through the world via that port. council members argue that colles' negative global impact outweighs the possibilities of thousands of new jobs. two people who are very busy right now looking at your weather and traffic are carrie and mike. we'll hear from them right after the break. traffic
