it's wednesday, june 29th. coming up on "early today," a a terror strike in turkey looks the globe, with 40 kills at one of the busiest airports. new details and what's being done to keep the u.s. safe. the presidential candidates speak out about the attacks. donald trump calls to bring water boarding back and fight fire with fire. three people are still unaccounted for after freight trains collide and fall like dominos next to a growing fire ball. plus, a scary scene as an armed man approaches the white house and a whole lot more on a busy wednesday. "early today" starts right now. good morning, everybody and
4:01 am
thanks for joining us. three suicide bombers attacked a busy airport in istanbul yesterday. killing 41. more than 130 injured are getting medical attention according to the prime minister. it is the latest of several bombings to strike turkey in recent months. the at trtacks have increased i scale and frequency. now, this latest attack comes two years to the day since isis leader declared the extremist group a califate across europe. with the end of ramadan approaching, there are new fears that last night's massacre that the attack is one in a series of coming at tracks. >> reporter: most of the victims were turkish nationals. we now know there were iraqis and saudis among them.
4:02 am
the islamic state group has taken credit for past attacks on turkey. a few parallels with the brussels attack in march. that was part of a larger assault on that city and it was eventually claimed by the islamic state. like in brussels, the three attackers arrived by taxi. they detonated suicide bombs in the airport. it's worth noting that the first security check is at the entrance of the airport. it's not clear whether that added layer of security reduced casualties. all inbound and outbound flights have been halted after the attack. ten passengers enroute had been temporarily grounded but it's potentially those flights headed for the u.s. that has many people worried. >> we expect those airports to ensure they meet those standards and that includes the people on
4:03 am
the aircraft, the people who service the aircraft and the cargo that goes on that aircraft. >> americans are waking up to increased security across the country. tracie potts joins us for more. what can people expect as they head to the airport over the next several days. >> you might see more visible security and tactical teams. that's not being ordered by washington. the homeland security department says they already have high security. they have no information u.s. airports have been or will be targeted as a result of this. you may see more security. they're trying to get their flights back going after a temporary stop yesterday after the attack. there were some flights already in the air headed here from turkey. they were allowed to land. and we caught up with some of those passengers once they landed. >> i don't know. i feel so worried and helpless about this.
4:04 am
>> i just heard about the news picking up my bags here. i traveled through that airport many times just as a layover for work travel. so i didn't think it would strike so close to something that i do on a regular basis. u.s. officials say it has all the marks of an isis attack. only about a day before it happened, the state department issued a travel alert to avoid southeastern turkey because of concern about terror threats there. three crew members are still missing at this hour after two trains collided in texas tuesday morning. that blaze was so massive rescue crews had to battle it into the night in an effort to recover the missing. a fourth crew member who jumped from the train remains in the hospital. the toxic fumes prompted
4:05 am
authorities to evacuate nearby residents and it's unclear how fast the trains were running when they collided but the area had a 70-mile-per-hour speed limit. the ntsb is investigating. last night's deadly istanbul attack left the presidential candidates with two very different reactions. donald trump told a crowd we're living in medieval times. >> we had another suicide bombing, istanbul, turkey, many, many people killed. we have people chopping off heads and drowning people in steel cages. nobody's ever seen this before. we have to fight so viciously and violently because we're dealing with violent people. so we can't do water boarding, but they can do chopping off heads, drowning people in steel cages, they can do whatever they want to do. you have to fight fire with fire. >> and while those comments raised eyebrows it's what he said about the transpacific
4:06 am
partnership that raised heads. insisting the country was quote, being raped by tpp supporters. >> the transpacific partnership is another disaster done and pushed by special interests who want to rape our country just a continuing rape of our country. that's what it is too. it's a harsh word. it's a rape of our country. this is done by wealthy people that want to take advantage of us and that want to assign another partnership. >> now, hillary clinton issued this response to the terror strike in turkey saying this attack only strengthens our resolve to defeat terrorism around the world and we must deepen our cooperation with our allies and partners in the middle east and europe to take on this threat. she also responded to trump's
4:07 am
recent rhetoric at a town hall last night. >> the whole slogan make america great again is code for go back to the time when a lot of people were not included, including women, including african americans and latinos and a lot of other people. i am not sympathetic to the home phobia, islam phobia and all of the other, you know, sort of dog whistles that trump uses. >> clinton is expected to remain out west today while trump holds a fund raiser in boston and a rally in maine. newly obtained surveillance video shows the dramatic moments when a man was shot on the white house grounds last month. the secret service says he was shot for refusing to drop the gun he was carrying.
4:08 am
we should warn you one of these scenes is graphic. >> reporter: word of shots fired at the white house put washington on edge last month. a newly released surveillance video reveals what happened. the 31-year-old man walked toward the white house on the afternoon of may 20th carrying a handgun. the gun is clearly visible in his right hand. uniformed secret service officers take defensive positions, but he continues walking ignoring commands to drop the gun. as he approaches a security check point, a secret service agent out of frame to the left shoots him once. others arrive to render first aid. he's taken on to a hospital for surgery. on monday his lawyer asked that he be released to home detention pending trial but the judge says he's a danger to the community. he told a secret service agent he came to the white house to quote, shoot people.

pete williams, nbc news, washington >> torrential rains pounded denver yesterday. it delayed the rockies game where ice pellets rained down on coor's field. cherry creek looked more like a raging river after the storm passed there. is there any relief in sight? >> not for that area. one thing that is going to change is we're finally getting to our mid summer weather pattern and our monsoonal season is beginning. some of that moisture combined, we get additional cloud cover. that usually will knock down the temperatures. instead of being 110, keep it
