the world this morning as the death toll from yesterday's attack in istanbul rises. kris sanchez monitors all the information coming into our newsroom and she'll join us with an update in moments. heartbreak stretches from southern california to the bay area, as six people including several children die in a horrific crash on interstate 5. an east bay school on high alert this morning after it received threat nipping e-mail, it's all connected to this weekend's violent protests at the state capital. "today in the bay" continues now. good wednesday more than to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we are coastal cool this rng mo, probably the only place we're cool. let's check out the forecast with kari hall, good morning. >> sam and laura we'll be much cooler along the coast today, cooler than yesterday and it wasn't bad there at all as we look at where we start now some coastal fog in san francisco, 52

degrees and 56 degrees in the east bay, clear in the north bay and dropped back to 47 degrees but will rise up to 92 today and 67 degrees in the city while the east bay is up to 75 degrees, mid 80s for the peninsula and upper 80s for the south bay. we'll still have some upper 90s for the tri valley. we'll take a look ahead to the fourth of july weekend. coming up in a few minutes headed to mike, still tracking that truck in oakland. >> that's right, we got an update as well. we look at your map, the south bay has your typical slowing north 101 and a little blip for 87 north into downtown. there's your tri valley at hayward, we got something going on there, we'll check on 880 south of 238 but north of there, we had some slowing through san leandro around davis is where that box truck was blocking part of the slow lane. the update the medium rig truck got there, cleared it to the shoulder, still a distraction and build toward the coliseum and the bay bridge toll plaza with the metering lights. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. there are new developments coming into our newsroom right

now out of turkey. the site of yet another deadly terror attack. during the last couple of hours authorities there raised the number killed at the airport in istanbul from 36 up to 41. while some flights have resumed it's still a very active crime scene. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez monitoring the information coming into our newsroom right now, and kris, while no one is claiming responsibility for the attacks, turkish officials are blaming isis. >> as you said, there hasn't been an official claim of responsibility, but turkish officials say this is the work of isis and u.s. officials agree with that sentiment. u.s. officials in turkey say this could be the beginning of a summer of attacks, though they emphasize there's no reason to believe that our airports here are a target. meanwhile at the airport in istanbul, police and emergency crews are still on scene as the airport reopens, 41 people were killed and now the number of people injured is at 239. the turkish prime minister says three suicide bombers arrived in a cab, witnesses reported

hearing gunfire first, and then while police took aim at some of those men, they detonated bombs. experts say it was a well coordinated attack, and it's worth noting, though, that the terrorists struck outside the security checkpoint, they were not inside the airport. at sfo we caught up with people who were traveling at the time or waiting for loved ones arriving from istanbul not knowing if the attack was really over and one passenger who watched the news coverage on the plane. >> i was like this has to be old. turns out it wasn't and i just completely froze. >> even though they were already over canada, i was still worried about if somebody's on the plane, that it's not over. >> u.s. agents inspect foreign airports regularly, sometimes undercover, they inspect the cargo, flight crews, ground crews, service techs checked under a terrorist watch list and undergo regular criminal background

checks if they are flying into the u.s. if. you have summer travel plans you might not see a change in security at u.s. airports because security is already high. sam and laura? >> people should be on alert, thank you very much, kris. visibly upset, students and parents packed the scotts valley high school board meeting last night. they're voicing concerns about a graphic and threatening letter written by a high school student. >> you can honestly look me in the eye and tell me none of that was real? >> the letter outlined plans to stab and rape 21 students and four teachers at scotts valley high school. it was handed to a girl during the last week of school. angry parents say the district did little to address the letter or the 15-year-old boy who allegedly wrote it. >> my wife and i attended a parent meeting last night, and at that meeting, we found out for the first time that our son was on the kill list. >> this is probably the most escalated type of threat i think that i'm aware of that we've

dealt with. >> no specific plans have been made to handle the situation. parents did receive a letter from the district implying it will take no further action. laura, a berkeley middle school on alert. police increased patrols at martin luther king jr. middle school after the principal received a threatening e-mail, talks about a teacher who took part in a violent protest in sacramento against a white nationalist group on sunday. ten people were injured in that event. the anonymous e-mail said if certain actions aren't taken against the teacher within a week, someone would come to the school and harm students. school is not currently in session, but there are two summer camps being moved to other locations as a precaution. it is 6:05. six people from the bay area including four children died yesterday in a crash on interstate 5, right at the grapevine. their mini van had been stopped in the right-hand lane after a minor accident. big rig then hit that mini van, sending it barreling down a ravine there. the two fathers inside got out

in time, they tried to save their wives and four children, but the car was on fire, and that's when highway patrol officers arrived. >> we got out to try to assist the two males trying to get the families out of the van, burns on their arms and that i wasn't able to really talk to them and gather information. >> they say it was hard to pull the two men off the two women and four children inside that car. they died in the fire. one of families is from daly city and the other from san francisco. >> just tragic. there is a 16-year-old, laura, who died and another girl seriously injured when the two were hit by a car in oakley. those girls were walking along east cypress road when they were struck yesterday afternoon. witnesses say the woman in the car was reportedly driving erratically. so police are investigating possible drunk or drugged driving. we're told the driver is cooperating. a developing story out of el dorado county this morning, a wildfire near forest hill and

the american river called the trail fire ripping through a remote area. crews, struggling to even get to those flames. about 100 homes are evacuated. so far, 300 acres are scorched but it is zero percent contained. some folks are worried that arson might be what's behind this recent rash of fires in san francisco's mission and vernal heights neighborhoods. david campos says the fires could have been deliberately set and holding a public hearing on the issue this morning at 10:00 at city hall. "the examiner" reports that there have been six major fires in the last 19 months, forcing almost 200 people out of their homes. >> it is 6:07. update on the death of a marin county teenager. one student was killed, the other survived with serious injuries. two of the suspects under the age of 18 are being tried as adults. the third suspect a 20-year-old

pleaded not guilty to being an accessory to murder. police are searching for a fourth suspect. downtown willow glenn is on a permanent diet, a road diet. there are changes to one road leading to cheers from many people and outrage from critics. lincoln avenue is reduced from four lanes down to three lanes between minnesota and coe, the buddy section of street running through willow glen. the changes were made three months ago a test run. according to "the mercury news" the city voted and the changes are here to stay. business owners think that the change is going to make the street safer for customers. this friday an increase in the price of parking at cal train stations. daily parking fees will spike by 50 cents to $5.50 a day. monthly permits go up from five bucks to 55, i should say they go up $5 to 55 and those parking at the belmont cal train station will have to start paying,

period. it was free until this point. >> if you notice dirt-like smell coming from your tap water you're not imagining things. santa clara water district is aware and they're trying to work to get rid of the problem. it's affecting only parts of the south bay. water officials say the odor will not harm you. it's caused by an algae bloom contaminating the delta. the water district is currently trying to eliminate the odor at its treatment plans. cheers. >> yeah. nothing gets your morning started off like that. hopefully your shower doesn't have that water going on this morning. or else you'll want to find another place. >> is that an excuse for smelling like dirt when you go to work in the morning? >> put on a little perfume. >> i guess so, hmm. anywait, let's get a live look outside now, sunol 57 degrees. the sun rises beautiful start to the day. clouds near the coast will keep areas a lot cooler, like 63 degrees in pacifica, while gilroy is up to 95 and some

upper 60s for san francisco, and up to 100 degrees in fairfield today. we'll talk about some slightly cooler temperatures heading closer to the weekend, that's coming up. let's head over to mike to see what it hoolooks like as you he out for the commute. >> tracking a couple of things in the south bay. oakland and san leandro on the northern border. the truck cleared from the roadway, the morning build through the area, there's hayward as well. looking toward san jose with northbound 101, slowing down on sensors. 87 from time to time showed slowing around kernor and up toward downtown. live shot for 101, traffic was starting to ease a little bit but now starting to see that second burt. there may be an issue as well, i spotted sop tire tread here. it alarms me on the roadway, i didn't see it before, may be an issue, a new flat and i'll scan the cameras as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

another hollywood visit for hillary clinton back in the bay area appearing with actress jamie lee curtis. they are attending a fund-raising lunch in san francisco. the president of planned parenthood is also expected to be in attendance. mrs. clinton was in l.a. last night. as for how she's faring on the train trail the latest poll shows she's got an eight-point lead nationally over donald trump. president obama is going to visit canada's capital today for the north american leader summit, also known as the three amigos summit. climate change is high on the agenda, he'll meet with canadian prime minister justin trudeau and mexican president pineto. president obama hosted trudeau back at the white house in march. after the summit he'll have a bilateral meeting with trudeau. urm peen union leaders are meeting today for the first time without the united kingdom at the trabl. 27 other eu nations are conferring about the union's future in the wake of last

week's brexit vote. leaders are expected to talk about the thorny issue of immigration many are calling one of the key elements that decided the british vote. also today scotland's first minister is meeting with eu leaders to talk about keeping itself aligned with the european nation. back at home a big layoff in san francisco lending club slashing more than 100 jobs. >> scott mcgrew, this was a company that was already in trouble. good morning. >> indeed it was, good morning, sam. landing club will lay off 179 people. you'll remember a couple of months back, this company discovered some irregular, though not illegal loans and sent its ceo out on the street. lending club launched with great fanfair. the san francisco company was going to disrupt banks with its peer-to-peer lending but after its trouble, some of the big money dried up making it harder to find money to loan out. the company parted ways with its founder and ceo renault leplaunch but new revelationssze

and his close family took out dozen of loans from lending club. they paid them back quickly no problem there but the speculation is the loans were taken out to pump up the loan numbers at the company. donald trump is making a tour through pennsylvania and ohio, in this case in a recycling plant that's crushed cans behind him. he's talking more about levying huge taxes and tariffs on chinese products in order to make them so expensive companies have but no choice but to make the products here in america. tariffs are mostly a democratic plan. republicans lean toward free trade but political analysts say working class men who vote democratic may be one of trump's strongest voter bases. last week we told you about hop, skip drive, it's an uber for little kids, send them to soccer practice or whatnot, mike inouye pointed out like the old defunct shuttle. hop skip drive will revamp its amp to look more like the shuttle app that parents really liked. i gave hop, skip drive i tried

it myself, sam and laura. two negatives the app is hard to navigate it's clunky and expensive, $20 flat fee plus mileage. the advantage to that over a cab or uber is that hop, skip drive does pay a lot of attention to the background of its drivers. >> interesting. >> some extra safety measure there is. thank you very much, scott. not in this neighborhood, that is what some of mark zuckerberg's neighbors are saying about a rock wall that the facebook ceo is building on his hawaiian property. >> the home is on the north shore of kauai and neighbors say the rock wall will look daunting and forbidding, not very hawaiian at all. they hope at the very least zuckerberg will change the look of the wall. others say it's oppressive and it blocks breezes. >> not on my beach, trouble in paradise. a paradise in places in the bay area today. others a little hotter. kari hall joining us with a look at weather. >> just like the past few days

it all depends on where you are. it's now 61 degrees in concord, and 48 degrees in santa rosa. san jose at 57 degrees. as we start out with this spread, we have some coastal clouds and some inland sun. it clears out today with a high of 97 in livermore and san jose up to 86 degrees. oakland 75, and santa rosa up to 90 degrees. we do still have this high pressure just to the east of us, but there's just enough of an onshore flow to keep it cool and foggy along the coastline. and then you go to spots like walnut creek, it will be up to the mid-90s today, and then we'll have the same thing again tomorrow as well as friday, but there will be a slow breakdown and a little bit of some cooler air moving again, so as we head across the bay, for the battle of the bay series round three, oakland a's won the first two games. see if they can do it at home, first pitch 72 degrees. looking ahead to this weekend it

won't be as hot over the weekend but still very warm, above average into the upper 80s for the south bay, and even hitting the low 90s for the tri valley and north bay. san francisco stays in the 60s and as we look ahead to the fourth of july, well, it looks like there could be some low clouds and fog rolling in, that's the possibility as we go into 9:30 around the time the fireworks will start in san jose, a few clouds there as well, but mostly clear and downtown it will be 71 degrees. we'll talk more about what else we expect that's coming up. head over to mike, a new issue for the san mateo bridge. >> that's one to watch, keri, the focus of the commute right now. we look over in the south bay, a light easy build here, tri valley no major issues. zoom toward the portion of the bay the peninsula, very clear right now. there's the tri valley and bun lin interchange. the astro valley y not a problem. 880 builds, san mateo bridge reports of a crash blocking the

reaching into the upper 90s today, and we'll have upper 80s for the south bay, san francisco 67 degrees and 92 for the north bay. we'll talk about what else to expect in the microclimate forecast coming up, let's head over to mike now a report of some wood on the freeway? >> yes, kari, we'll call it a little debris way. oversaul view in the south bay typical build there, more slowing toward the san mateo bridge. the crash has been cleared from lanes over to the shoulder. the peninsula starting to see a build for 9 as well and the bay bridge toll plaza nothing unusual about the flow of the patterns here but we'll show you the live shot and wood debris reported somewhere around the toll plaza, i scan our cameras, all looking in the area, i didn't see a problem but you see the backup. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 6:31. developing story out of istanbul, turkey. 41 people were killed, hundreds injured in an attack at the ataturk airport yesterday. this morning the airport is actually one of the world's

busiest. it's partially reopened, but it's hardly business as usual. police and emergency crews are still on the scene. isis has yet to claim responsibility turkish leaders blaming the terror group for the attack and worried this could begin the beginning of a summer of attacks. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is gathering information and will join us for a live report in just about 15 minutes. berkeley police are stepping up apatrols at a local middle school after the school received an e-mail from someone threatening to harm the students. >> "today in the bay's" rob redell live at martin luther king jr. middle school. school isn't in session but summer camps are there. >> reporter: they have we to who move them as a result. berkeley police -- good morning to you, laura and sam. the plin palate martin luther king jr. middle school received an anonymous e-mail demanding one of their teachers be fired for her participation in this weekend's sacramento pro test against a white nationalist group.

the teacher is yvette felarka, in an interview after the protest turned violent with ten people getting hurt. if velarka, also an activist isn't let go within a week whoever sent the e-mail is threatening to hurt students who attend the school. according to berkeley police the fbi considers this to be a low-level threat, but police tell us that they are taking this threat seriously. the department has since assigned an officer to the campus, has increased patrols around the school and has moved the two summer schools to other locations. i'm talking about the summer camps i should have said. school is out for summer as you're well aware. members of the community use the campus for tennis and swimming which is again why berkeley police want to have a presence here considering this threat that was e-mailed in to the school. reporting live here in berkeley, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much. to actual violence on campus, the search right now on for a gunman who opened fire right by san jose state, killing one man and injuring another.

this marks the second deadly shooting in less than 24 hours. happened yesterday afternoon on 11th and san carlos, two blocks from campus. witnesses say they saw someone fire several shots inside of a mini van before driving off in his own car. neighbors tell us there are several families with children living in that area. >> it is scary because i was just out here about five minutes before that happened with my daughter, and she was riding her bike, and you know, i'm on my cell phone, so it is kind of scary, it's very close to home. >> now for some context on what's happening in san jose, there are 24 homicides reported in the city this year. as we told you earlier this week a man was found shot to death in his car in the bar ri esa neighborhood. this time last year, the city had ten homicides. >> 6:34. a follow-up to last month's murder outslide a san leandro senior center. formal charges could be filed against two gang members accused in the killing. three men shot and killed a man outside a family celebration at

the center. the getaway van then crashed into a car and the men got away. police say they tracked down the suspect. ta-year-old norberto villareal of santa rosa is facing charges along with two minors. plenty of pride but there was also hate. san francisco police arrested this man, emmanuel morensi for allegedly assaulting two women during pride week celebrations sunday. he harassed, pushed threatened to kill them because of their sexual orientation. police need help solving another attack, two men in a dark gray sedan yelled hoe know phobic slurs at a man walking on 22nd street, they then shot him in the hand with a bb gun before driving away. his injury is are not life-threatening. the sfpd is retooling its training and now teaching its officers to defuse and deescalate situations. not just to default to use of force. the training is part of the new use of force policy the department adopted following

backlash after several deadly officer involved shootings. previously training was centered around when to shoot but now the focus is to step back and try to negotiate with suspects. trainers say the veteran officers may have a harder time with the new policy. >> it's really difficult to erase 25, 30 years of training, but the only way to do it is to implement new training and keep that training up and hit it. >> police officers go through hours of training every six months. the police commission and the officers union are also working on a new use of force policy. >> 6:36 right now. the controversial sentencing of aa stanford swimmer in a sexual assault case could change state law. district attorney jeff rosen yesterday told a state senate committee that convicted student brock turner had not been eligible for mandatory jail time because the victim was unconscious. current law does not mandate a prison sentence when a rape victim is unconscious. members of the senate committee were shocked by that and voted in favor of a bill which would

carry an automatic sentence of prison whether the victim is conscious or not. taking action far away from national grounds, today is the national day of action on gun violence prevention and nancy pelosi is taking action staging another sit-time this time at san francisco general hospital. that sit-in is not just to end gun violence but also to end hatred, she says. today's action comes after democrats staged a 25-hour-long sit-in on the house floor last week demanding a vote on gun control legislation. republicans who called this maneuver a stunt were successfully able to block any legislation from moving forward. today's sit-in at general hospital begins at 1:00. the city of san francisco continues to try to improve new options for the homeless. new facility opened yesterday to assist homeless in transitioning into permanent housing. ever since last year the city has been on a mission to open so-called navigate centers, located south of market on 12th

ballot. vots will w decide whetr to legali t this morning there's a new item on a california ballot, voters are going to decide whether to legalize recreational use of marijuana in this state. it's called the adult use of marijuana act and it would allow people 21 and older to buy an ounce of marijuana and marijuana infused products at licensed retail outlets. it would also give customers license to grow up to six pot plants for personal recreational use. all of this comes after initiative proponents turned in more than enough signatures to place this measure on the november ballot. new this morning, $6.5 billion just hours ago santa clara city leaders reportedly approved what will be the largest private development project in silicon valley

history, happening next to levi stadium. >> it could reshape the entire topography of the bay area. sharon katsuda is going to stretch out for decades to complete. >> reporter: that's right, sam and laura. this is a 30-year project and so it's a long-term plan as you said, it's going to happen in phases. the first phase will take place behind me right on this golf course. now you can see from the aerial view from our live cam this is a huge site located on a landfill. the first phase would include according to the silicon valley business journal a 300-room hotel, office and retail space. some concerns of the project include lack of afordable housing in the area for those who work on the new development and businesses. future phase of the project would take over the nearby dirt

bike track so developers from related companies have promised to eventually find a new home for the dirt bike track and of course, last night's vote by the city council isn't the final approval. there may be court challenges and there also may be weighing in by state regulators. developers say they are moving forward. reporting live in santa clara, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> it is quarter to 7:00 right now. could san francisco get a bigger slice of the pie? all the big name tech companies in the city might end up paying a new tech tax. ballot measure was introduced yesterday that would charge certain tech companies 1.5% of their annual payroll, that is expected to generate $120 million a year to pay for affordable housing and homeless services. the measure requires six votes from the board of supervisors, just to get on the november ballot, and two-thirds majority support by voters to win approv approval. uber is about to start keeping a very close eye on its drivers. the san francisco ride sharing

company is testing a new software that tracks driving habits. here is how this is going to work. sensors in drivers' smartphone also track their speed and braking. uber says it will help the company make rides safer for customers. uber says it will not use the information to punish its drivers. bhil hillary clinton says if you work at a tech startup you should get more time to pay off your student loans. >> scott mcgrew, one of several proposals young people in the bay area would like. >> clinton released her tech platform tuesday, that was one of the proposals. if you go from college to a startup, you could get more time to pay back your loans. the challenge of startups of course is they don't necessarily bay well. they pay well in stock options, and those might make you someday but college lenders want their money right now. under the proposal you could defer those loans and in some cases you yourself if you create a startup that creates social

today, and we'll be up to 95 in gilroy, while san mateo is at 78 degrees. 58 degrees at the outer sunset and 88 in napa, 98 in brentwood and oakland, 75 degrees and some mid to upper 90s still for the tri valley. it's all because of this high pressure, it is starting to weaken just a bit, it's allowing for enough of an onshore flow to keep temperatures cooler along the coast and into the next several days. unfortunately for the spots like the south bay into the east bay into the north bay, that is where it will still be very hot with highs making it into the upper 80s to the 90s. looking ahead to the weekend, we will still have some slightly cooler temperatures, but above average into the upper 80s to low 90s for the tri valley and the north bay, and the south bay up to 88 degrees on sunday. looking ahead to the fourth of july for san francisco, the big fireworks show, looks like there could be some clouds rolling in, something will be keeping an eye

41 people were killed as you said, 239 people were injured and while u.s. officials in turkey say this could be the beginning of a summer of attacks there, they emphasize there is no reason to believe that our airports here are a target. we should mention u.s. agents inspect foreign airports and cargo bound for the u.s. regularly, flight crews, ground crews, service staff, all checked against terror watch lists an they undergo regular criminal back ground checks. more on this later today. laura? >> thank you very much, kris. six people from the bay area including four children, died yesterday in a horrible crash on interstate five right at the grapevine. the mini van was stopped in the right-hand lane after a minor accident. big rig hit the mini van. two fathers managed to get out in time but tried to save their wives and four children trapped inside and the car was on fire. that's when highway patrol officers arrived. >> we got out to try to assist the two males, trying to get the families out of their van.

burns on their arms and that i wasn't able to talk to them and gather information. >> the two women and four children died in the fire. one of the families is from daly city, the other from san francisco. it is 6:58 right now. on your wednesday, the search is on for a gunman who opened fire near san jose state killing one man and injuring another. this marks the second deadly shooting in less than 24 hours in san jose. this one happened yesterday afternoon on 11th and san carlos, just a couple blocks from san jose state's campus. witnesses reported they saw someone fire several shots at two men who were inside of a mini van before driving off in his own car. so far, there are 24 homicides reported this year in san jose. at the same time last year, the figure stood at ten. >> some people worry arson could be behind the recent rash of fires in san francisco's mission and vernal heights individu neighborhoods. supervisor david campos says the fires could have been
