mike and get your fourth of july forecast with kari right now on "today in the bay." a very good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm lawyer a garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. people are flocking in from everywhere. >> oh, yeah. >> looking ahead. >> they will be. closures to tell you about. bob redell is following that. but first, the weekend forecast is nice. >> it looks nice temperaturewise. coming down from the triple digits. we will still have 90s from the inland valleys. of coastal area is the place to be. 54 in san francisco. start out with morning clouds and fog. clear in the south bay, 56 degrees with highs today reaching the upper 80s. south bay and north bay. the peninsula will be up to 80 in san francisco, a pleasant 70 degrees today. 40 of july is coming up, mike is now tracking problems for the east bay. >> that's why we have traffic signals that are out. looking t the bay. sam talked about traffic. flooding the roadways.

early start. a lot of folks are on vacation heading into the area or out of the area. that will be the problem. but right now tracking the signal, surface streets. cherry land district, part of hayward. north of a street. hey street and hathaway, it took out a power pole. 4,000 people without power. it affects the signals. astreet is a major off-ramp. we're tracking that area. no problems for the approach toward the bay bridge. looks like it is not an issue because we will look at the camera and see no backup. no metering lights. no problem getting out of oakland and san francisco. it will get busy. folks are waking up easier this morning. back to you. >> hopefully so. 6:01. update to breaking news. yellow caution tape lines a south bay shopping mall right now. >> let's get right to "today in the bay's" kris sanchez live. there is a scene behind you, some sort of late night crash.

>> right. we do know there was a police and fire response here to an accident at the westfield oak ridge mall in south san jose. we have a photo from a witness who says he believes it is because a chimd was struck by a car here in this parking lot. we did confirm they responded to an accident here but they say this is now an investigation for the san jose police. police were here as well. did not confirm what the witnesses reported about the child being struck by a car here. we reached out to westfield management and have not gotten a response back. emergency crews responded around k9d 30 last night at which point this parking lot which faces a number of restaurants and movie theater would likely have still been busy. the main roadway on the side of the mall is blossom hill. traffic will not be impacted. as we get more information we will be sure to bring that to you throughout the morning.

in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:02 right now. first of its kind, federal agents revealed investigating a deadly crash involving self driving car and now tesla's trendy and pricey model s is under fire. the deadly accident happened in florida in pay when the tesla model s was in autopilot mode. they opened the against yesterday. investigators say the tesla did not brake when a big rig was crossing in front of it. experts believe it's because the car could not distinguish the white side of the truck from the bright sky behind it. now consumer watchdog groups are calling for more regulation. >> when a car crashes because it can't tell a truck is there, that's a serious problem and everybody needs to stop, take a pause, put the technology on hold until we figure out what went wrong. >> tesla released a statement about the crash notes its cars have driven an estimated 120 million miles on autopilot.

but also reminds owners autopilot is an assist feature that requires you to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times. and that you need to maintain control and responsibility for your vehicle while using it. lawyer are, a follow-up. homeless man schedule to be arraigned after police say he stabbed an unsuspecting man watching a movie inside a theater. 23-year-old delonte hart arrested after moviegoers told police he stabbed adam lucero several times using a kitchen knife. police believe that attack was random. lucero's friends on facebook say he's recovering from surgery and in the meantime residents tell us the incident has made them very apprehensive about going to the movies. >> it's really awful because you're totally vulnerable. you're in the dark. you've given up like your trust to the rest of the people that are in the theater. >> authorities are also investigating hart for the stabbing death of a homeless man that took place on monday. those two crimes could be connected. 6:04.

california's vaccine law goes into effect today. means all children must get ten immunizations to go to school or day care in the state. parents can no longer refuse to vaccinate their children for personal or religious reasons. the law was passed last year after the large measles outbreak at disneyland that sickened 130 people in california. after that outbreak there with the significant rise in number of vaccinated children actually entering kindergarten. today bay area cities will see their planned minimum wage increases take effect. that includes san francisco whose new minimum wage will be $13 an hour. 75 cent increase. sunnyvale is increasing minimum wage by 70 cents, up to $11 an hour. judge aaron persky on the bench after a long vacation. persky is facing intense criticism for his sentencing of brock turner. the former swimmer who sexually assault assaulted an unconscious woman. he is once again presiding over another sex offender case. yesterday's hearing was just

procedure approximately peop procedure. the judge sentenced bram turner to six months in county jail. he could have been sentenced to ten years in state prison. yet another shake up in a growing web of police sex crimes. a livermore police officer has been placed on administrative leave. the police chief says the officer allegedly had a sex sexual relationship with 18-year-old is les guap. the same woman who claims she slept with two dozen officer, some when she was a minor. it's led to the down fall of several officers and deputies in multiple east bay departments. just yesterday we learned sex scandal led to another resignation. contra costa deputy perez quit among allegations he had sex with celeste guap. the sex scandal originated before spreading to other

neighboring cities. daly city police say this is the face of an armed robber. they released images of a man they say used a semi automatic gun to rob a store clerk at a gas station on john daly boulevard. it happened june 28th after 8:00 p.m. the man is believed to be 5'7". call daly city police if you know who he is. a cab driver is forced to hide in his taxi for safety after his passenger started to get violent. amir sakaev was arrested around 3:00 yesterday morning in pal to at to. police say he pulled out a stun gun when the driver approached him about payment. the driver ran back to the cab, locked the door and called police. a fireworks bust in east palo alto and warn about the dangers. here's the bust. 600 pounds of fireworks and other explosives. san mateo sheriffs and the bomb squad swooped into an apartment on gardenia court in east palo

alto. arrested one man. happening now, the holiday travel rush quickly approaching. live pictures from some of the roadways across the bay area. taking look at the golden gate bridge, looks to be the lightest right now. palo alto. a record 43 million americans are expected to hit the highways over the next few days. that's over the country. we're going to look at the morning drive in just a minute coming up with mike. no doubt a lot of people heading out of the bay area and into it as well. if you are heading across the golden gate bridge. starting today drivers with fast track will pay 25 cents more. some will pay $7.50. clipper card fares and ferry. the extra money is earmarked to for the bridge district budget. there are other upticks in

transportation costs going on atz well. prepare to pay more to park at caltrain stations. daily parking fees are going up by 50 cents to $5.50 a day. as for monthly permits, they go up by 5 bucks to $55. starting tonight b.a.r.t. is launching a holiday weekend closure that will impact riders in fremont. the last two stations of the fremont line are going to be closed for track repairs. the union city and fremont stations will stay closed through the fourth of july holiday. shuttle buses are going to run between south hayward and fremont in the meantime and b.a.r.t. tells riders to expect delays. sanother part of the bay area, something you might call b.a.r.t. light is getting closer to reality. b.a.r.t. calls the service e-bart and this week b.a.r.t. is showing off the new trains used along the ten-mile line. starting next winter the dees sill trains will run. and it will use the same fair

on your friday morn you might want to take a break from eating breakfast for a second. can't say we didn't warn you. a story might turn your stomach. look at this map. a little red dot represents road kill hot spots. meaning those areas have an unusually high number of wild animals struck by cars. this map is part of a new report from a uc davis road ecology center. i they same to have a large amount in general. highway 280 seems to be the most dangerous spot. >> i was driving on 280 and i saw half of a coyote and the shoulder and i couldn't see the other half. i just thought that's enough.

mow details. davis researchers say out of 700,000 crashes 6,000 involve wildlife. the goal is to encourage them to build more fencing along the hot spots. a quarter after 6:00. the bay area's booming population and surging housing problems have a mega region. more people than ever are living out side the nine counties but making the commute here for work. the megaregion include sacramento, northern san joaquin valley. more traffic on the roads and more stress on mass transit. the public policy group says big changes are needed. it recommends building more regional rail lines and streamlining the permit process to build new house. the iphone of the future might block you from filming concert, movies, or anyone who does not want a camera affixed right on them. apple would pick up infrared

signal that can alter what you see on your camera and in some cases stop it preever tively from taking pictures or video. apple is not commenting on what specifically those plans are with the patton. google wants to be the new go to when the ground shakes. the tech giant is launching a new program to help get critical information out when an earthquake strikes. when people are search for information about a quake that may have happened nearby, google will provide relevant information at the top of the search page, tied to that location. >> the size of the earthquake, the magnitude, the epicenter as well as give tip on what to do to stay safe in the aftermath and aftershock. >> google will offer the frfgs pulled from the usgs website which normally posts win minutes and the usgs says they have no problems with the new service. let's shake things up now and this is i know one of your faith stories of the morning. how about a joe pawvelski upd e update. he's going to be spending his fourth of july holiday and many

park towards the embarcadero. beautiful start to this friday morning and holiday weekend. 54 degrees in san francisco and oakland. and 53 degrees now in santa rosa. as you head out this morning no issues. we've god some clouds here and there. but overall once again a nice clear start. 64 degrees now in concord. with highs today reaching into the low 90s for los galos. 80 degrees in san mateo. and 70 in the castro today. we'll see the temperatures reaching into the upper 90s in fairfield while pittsburg is at 91. pleasant on the, 93 degrees. seven-day forecast, the bottom of the screen shows we will have a fairly comfortable fourth of july but this weekend and today, the beach will be the place to be. make sure you have a light jacket. it will be cool at times. clouds will be slow to clear out. winds will be breezy from the west at 15 miles an hour and reaching into the low to mid 60s. santa cruz will be dropping back to the 50s right in time for the

suns sunset. this evening at the coliseum, first pitch when the pyre rots come in to town it will be 71 degrees. 68 degrees at 9:00. so a nice evening to spend out watching some baseball. high pressure still keeping the valleys hot and the coastline will be in the 60s and 70s. it will be a cooling trend for the weekend and then some slight warming as we head into monday. looking at the next three days. it will be in the mid to upper 80s for the south bay. 70s for the peninsula and some upper 60s for this weekend in san francisco. the north bay will be in the 80s while the east bay is in the 70s and some low 90s tomorrow in the tri-valley. but a little bit cooler on sunday. let's head over to mike now looking at a late build for the -- some of the roads today. >> that's right. looking at independence from any problems right now on the roadway. we'll look over here and we see that the freeways, they're moving well. we're looking for any signs for the build on the south bay. tri-valley, just a little bit

independence weekend. a tip of the cap to uncle sam they're going to free us from the heat. >> how about that? we will great weather. and it still will be very dry and hot for the inland areas. coastal areas you're still catching a break. we start out with morning low clouds and fog in san francisco as well as in the peninsula and daly city. you can tell by the north bay you can barely see the shot over towards san francisco. in the 50s now. heading into the upper 80s for the south bay and north bay. still 90s for the tri-valley and 70 in san francisco. mike has an update about that power outage now in hayward. >> we had 4,000 customers without power after an earlier crash in high ward city streets. we'll talk about the freeways first around show you overall nothing really but green. that's a great flow of traffic. moving in towards the cherry land area, hathaway and lancing. that crash still a scene but we have under 400 people without power that may still affect local signals. a street and hathaway on the

east side of the freeway. watch it through the area. no disturbance for the b.a.r.t. lines. smooth flow of traffic. disabled big rig cleared without slowing. and we'll look over here towards the maze. no backup at the maze, through the maze, or the toll plaza. no metering lights this morning. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> as millions are people are getting ready to travel this holiday weekend, changes that people in the bay area need to know about. >> bob redell is live in san francisco. we're going to have to pay more across the golden gate bridge. >> this being the first day of the month of july you are going to see some fare and toll increases and some closures as well because of the holiday weekend. now, one of the closures we're talking about is the vista point parking lot on the marin side of the golden gate bridge. it's going to be shut down this holiday weekend to help cut down on traffic congestion. the parking lot on the marin side of vista point will be shut down between 11:00 and 5:00 today through sunday.

and on monday it will shut down again at 11:00 in the morning. won't reopen until after the fireworks show. this is to seize the flow of cars trying to cross the bay bridge. things are going to effect your wallet as you were mentioning, laura. this being july 1st tolls will go up. extra 25 cents for most drivers on the golden gate bridge. golden gate ferry and transit, a 4% increase in their fares. this extra money will help the district pay down a five-year budget deficit. san francisco bay ferry fares are going to be going up by 3%. now, today there will also be an increase in parking at caltrain station, daily parking fees will increase by 50 cents to $5.50 a day. monthly permits from 5 bucks to $55. those parking at the belmont caltrain station will start paying for that privilege that used to be free. b.a.r.t. will be shutting down the line so workers can perform what b.a.r.t. calls vital repairs and maintenance. the closure runs from tonight

through the straart of service tuesday morning. in other words, for the entire weekend, b.a.r.t. will run a free bus bridge between both stations. riders should expect delays ranging from 20 to 40 minutes. reporting live here at the golden gate bridge toll plaza, bob redell, "today in the bay." thank you, bob. the holiday weekend expected to be one of the busiest travel days in years. >> for more on that let's bring in edward lawrence live from washington, d.c. edward, in light of recent events security will be a top priority. >> it is going to be a top priority, sam and lauren. one of a record-setting year for travel according to aaa. 65% of people will go to a barbecue for the holiday period. they've got to get there by either a car or a plane. >> a record number of people will travel in the united states over the next four days. >> we are projecting 43 million americans are going to be traveling this holiday season.

>> big plans are going to the beach. having a cookout, spending time with family. >> reporter: a big reason for the boom, gas prices are at the lowest levels in a decade. that extra traffic means more police patrols. secretary of homeland security says it's not just the roads with the visible police presence. >> the american public should expect to see this july 4th weekend and enhanced security presence at airports, train stations and other transit centers across the country by tsa and state and local law enforcement as well as security personnel. >> reporter: what you shouldn't see around fireworks sell bragszs, drones. there are strict new rules. in addition, the national parks service says no drones will be allowed at the national mall in washington, d.c. still, there will be plenty of security at all the independence day celebrations. >> safety, resource protection is going to be our number one priority. >> reporter: police say be aware of your surroundings and don't let security concerns rue enyour travels or parties.

series of raids in turkey. still no official claim of responsibility for that attack but turkish officials say it bears all the hallmarks of isis. 44 people died on tuesday. hundreds of others were injured. nbc news is learning the house could sloat vote on a bill to stop suspected terrorists from buying guns. sources tell us the gun provision will be part of an anti-terrorism package that could be voted on next week. specifics were not given. republicans have been under pressure by house democrats to take action on gun control. last week democrat lawmakers staged a 25-hour sit-in session on the house floor. 6:36. update now to a shooting near san jose state. a second victim died. shots were fired just two blocks away from campus on tuesday. witnesses tell us they saw someone pull out a gun and open fire at two men in a minivan. one man died at the scene. the other passed away from his injuries yesterday.

in the meantime, the search for the gunman continues. in the east bay, this is the fourth suspect now identified in last month's gang murder in san leandro. 18-year-old gabrielle martinez in custody for another crime. it stems from a family celebration at local community center. at the time the get away van sped off but crashed a short distan away. the suspects got away. on tuesday police announced three arrests incruluding two minors. a survivor not a victim. 94-year-old woman recently honored by president obama continues to recover after a violent home invasion. richmond police are still looking for the man who attached betty reids soskin. a suspect broke into her second floor apartment, ransacked her possessions and then attacked her. >> they continued the assault and dragged her out of the bedroom into the hallway and managed to straddle her and

punch her several more times in her face. >> the suspect swipd multiple items including the presidential coin awarded to her by president obama in december. the white house says they will send her a replacement. another story that will break your heart a little bit. east bay animal shelter is blaming human error for the recent youautization. it led to the deaths of two dogs who recently found homes. one was a pit bull mix named barbie which was in the process of getting rescued. the agency still trying to figure out just how that error was made. they're doing everything in their power to make sure that mistake does not happen again. >> our priority is on saving lives. clearly wouldn't hit the bar with that this time but we're going of use it as an opportunity to learn, get better. >> the agency says the other dog was euthanized because workers had no idea it had actually been

placed in a home. 6:38. fire ravaged community in the central valley receiving a helping hand from two south bay cities. people in gilroy and morgan hill had been collecting items for victims of the erskine fire. >> i really feel that if we are out of the effected area and can possibly help in any small way that that is enormous. that's a big huge help for those folks have lost so much. >> it's so nice to see. look at this. the fire destroyed 285 homes. it just scorched more than 46,000 acres. 80% contained. but for a lot of people that's a little first sign of hope that they will see in some time. >> the bay area is one big community. >> i love the giving spirit here. we also love the whetherer here. we're spoiled. >> we do. we have a beautiful holiday weekend on tap. the temperatures coming down a little bit. >> starts out this morning. feels nice outside.

just as millions of peopleprepan this fourth juz as millions prepare to get some sand and sun this fout of july weekend, florida's governor is declaring a state of emergency because of this. a massive invasion of toxic algae at rivers and beaches. local officials say the problem stems from a nearby lake where warmer temperatures and heavy rain triggered a large algae bloom this year. the army corps of engineer released the excess water into

neighboring rivers spreading the algae. one family found a manatee struggling in a canal behind their home. >> he was coming up from the water and the muck having a hard time breathing, spitting out, out of his nostrils a lot of the green algae. when we turned the water on it immediately came up and started just washing his face off. it's awful. when i say it's a collapse of the eco system that's being light about it. >> the army corps of engineers now says it will reduce the flow of water from that nearby lake but several beaches will stay closed at least through the holiday weekend. after spending 16 years in prison the man at the center of the hit podcast serial has won a new trial in balt more. syed was convicted of murders his former high schoolgirl friend and burying her body in a park back in 1999. he was sentenced to life in prison but yesterday a baltimore judge ruled that syed deserves another trial. the judge said that the defense attorney failed to cross-examine

fourth of july. >> coolest name, feel fight master, great stompers and fight fasters. >> yeah. >> school. >> revved up here on this friday. >> yeah. it's going to be a great weekend for the fourth of july. grilling out. going to the pool, swimming, beach, whatever you plan to do. beautiful weather for that as we look outside at sonon. we start out with a beautiful sun rise. taking a look at where we go from here with all of thundershower highs today reaching into the low 90s in parts of south bay and palo alto up to 83 degrees and 70 today in the castro. we'll have 60s and 70s along the coast but upper 90s in spots like fairfield, napa up to 85. oakland, 72. and low 90s for the tri-valley. we're coming down from the triple digits. even though we do still have high pressure across the region creating hot valleys and cool coastline. it will be slightly cooler as we go into the day tomorrow with the stronger onshore flow as

this area of low pressure continues to bring in much more of a breeze, an ocean breeze for the inland areas. just bringing it down just a few degrees. you will notice the difference as you head out and about. and if you're planning to hit the road this weekend, at lunchtime tomorrow in reno it will be 90 degrees. 80 in southlake tahoe and yosemite will be a little bit more comfortable. 76 degrees with highs in the reno reaching the low 90s. winds coming in from the west-southwest across the region. feeling much warmer the farther east you go. and also for the central valley we're still expecting the highs to reach close to 100 degrees. palm springs for tomorrow up to 106. and santa barbara will be at a nice 66 degrees. so just something to keep in mind if you will be traveling outside of the bay area. here we're going to have some great weather, too. in the south bay, in the mid to upper 80s. in the peninsula, some mid 70s and in san francisco staying in the 60s while the north bay is up to 88 degrees on the fourth of july.

also the same in the tri-valley and the east bay will be in the mid 70s. i'll have another quick look at the forecast coming up. mike is looking out for your drive through some of the towns as well. >> that's right. through town and local streets, getting out of town, focusing on that because right now your commute on the freeway is not looking bad. a little slowing on north 101 through san jose. just starting to show up on our sensors. no issues getting in towards the dublin interchange. it's getting out of tuown that' going to start early. 80 getting up towards sacramento. keep that in mind early this afternoon. as we get over towards the hayward as well. talk about the power outage that continues. less than 400 people in this area without power but there was a crash hathaway just north of a street and it took signature nalt ales out. the on and off-ramp at 880, no problem reported. nearby the san mateo bridge, live look. show you the traffic flows smoothly without delay for 101 in through palo alto. just that lane shift. back to you.

here are the top stories nbc baarea... == welcome back. before you head out the door here are the top story on nbc bay area. >> update to breaking news that kris sanchez has been following live from oak ridge mall where there was some kind of crash. >> there was a crash for sure. we do know that san jose police and san jose fire, paramedics did respond to the parking lot here at the westfield oak ridge parking lot. here's a photo from a witness who believes a child was struck by a car here. we confirm that pair med dinram responded to an accident here but they say this is now an investigation for the san jose police. police have not confirmed what witnesses reported about that child being struck by that car. we reached out to westfield management and have not gotten a response back. emergency crews responded around 9:30 last night at which point this parking lot which faces a number of restaurants and a movie theater would likely still bb busy. the main roadway along the side

of the shopping center is blossom hill and traffic will not be impacted. the mall will open around 10:00 this morning. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." first of its kind. federal agents reveal they're investigating a deadly crash involving a self-driving car. tesla's pricey model s is under fire. the deadly accident happened in florida in may when it was in autopilot mode. they opened that investigation yesterday. investigators say the tesla did not brake when a big rig was crossing in front of it. experts believe it's because the car couldn't distinguish the white side of the struck from the bright sky behind it. now consumer watchdog groups are calling for more regulation. >> when a car crashes because it can't tell a truck is there, that's a serious problem and everybody needs to stop, take a pause, put the technology on hold until we figure out what went wrong. >> tesla released a statement about the crash noting its cars
