in to a dhaka restaurant where dozens were held captive, killing six and rescuing 13 hostages. it was a terrifying standoff that lasted through the night. gunfire still ringing out this morning in the final moments of the siege. new grim details from an army general. 20 civilians slaughtered, most of them with sharp weapons. all of them foreigners. no americans known to be among the dead. this was supposed to be the most secure corner of the city, the upscale gulshan district popular with foreigners. the american embassy just a 15-minute walk away. the target an upscale bakery by day, a popular restaurant by night, one of the few hot spots where foreigners were certain to gather on a friday evening. isis claiming responsibility through its news agency saying islamic state commandos carried out the attack on a cafe frequented by foreigners. no confirmation from u.s. or

local officials. now bangladesh has been no stranger to violence in the past couple of years, but a brazen attack on this scale is something the country has never seen before. a worrying development in what has already been a terrifying week around the globe. sheinelle? >> it is concerning. lucy kavanov, thank you. if you are traveling today you will notice extra security at the country's airports in light of the attacks in turkey and bangladesh for the fourth of july weekend, but many travelers say that just will not stop them from taking their summer vacations. nbc live at jfk in new york. good morning. >> reporter: jeff, good morning. we're standing outside of jfk airport where there was actually a security scare three days ago. thankfully everything did turn out okay. of the 5.5 million passengers traveling through new york's airports and train stations, many of them are being extra vigilant. more travel, more lines, and

this weekend more passengers on high alert. after a bloody hostage takeover in bangladesh on friday and an airport terror attack in istanbul tuesday that left 44 dead, u.s. airports have increased security from coast to coast. >> we're going to see many officers with heavy vests, helmets and long guns. >> reporter: in new york over 1,000 new officers will be patrolling the city. while in chicago 5,000 officers will be manning the airports and navy pier. out west, the coast guard sweeping the seas. what went through your mind when you saw more policemen? >> you feel safer when somebody is there to protect you. >> i don't think people should be afraid today, but people should be more aware. >> reporter: the travelers i spoke to said this is business as usual. >> i feel very safe. i'm not afraid to fly. >> reporter: are you more nervous to travel this holiday weekend? >> it's not just this weekend. it's always in the back of your mind. >> reporter: but while eyes are on the skies this weekend, a whopping 85% of holiday

travelers will be driving like our own luke russert reporting from the nation's capital to the big apple. >> we left d.c. at 8:55 a.m. we just hit delaware. this is going to be the busiest fourth of july travel day in the history of fourth of july travel days. the reason, this is the lowest gas prices. >> reporter: the national average for gas is now $2.28 per gallon compared to this time last year when it was $2.76 per gallon. but whether you're traveling by plane, train, or automobile, authorities say this holiday is not about fear. >> july 4th is about freedom. it's also about inclusion. had is exactly what the terrorists are trying to undermine. >> reporter: warned of attacks isis has attacks here and abroad. federal sources say there's really no known credible threats. still, federal authorities say that any americans traveling in highly trafficked areas should stay extra cautious. jeff? >> morgan radford here in new york, thanks. we have the travel, the

traffic. dylan, how is the weather this holiday weekend? >> most of the country is actually going to enjoy a really nice holiday weekend, but we do have trouble spots through the middle of the country. we have a lot of rain falling across eastern kansas, northeastern nebraska. the reds, the yellows, the oranges indicate where we have heavy downpours now and this green area that extends over into st. louis is where we have flash flood watches through monday. that's because the rain is going to sit in this one area for the next several days. it's a stationary front. these areas of low pressure will ride along the front, and that's what triggers more and more heavy rain. it will eventually reach washington, d.c., by the time we get to monday, so the fireworks in jeopardy for the d.c. area. as we go through the day, they have y rounds of rain could lead to flash flooding. when you get the heavy pockets of rain that produce 5, 6 inches of rain in a short period of time, and then as we go into monday, it does stretch over into charleston, west virginia. then eventually by monday evening it will make its way to washington, d.c. so through monday we're looking

at areas like kansas city perhaps picking up 3 to 4 inches of rain. st. louis as well. this is a generalized area of rain, though, and we will see localized higher amounts, closer to 5-8 inches. that's why we have the flash flood threat. i would say if there was a part of the country that's probably not going to get great fireworks, it will be right through the midwest and extending into washington, d.c. >> all right. thanks, dylan. to politics now and what could be a very big weekend in the race for the white house. donald trump pondering his choice of a running mate. hillary clinton possibly facing some tough questioning about her e-mails as early as today. nbc's kelly o'donnell is outside of clinton's washington home. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. we do not expect to see either of the candidates in a public way this weekend but there are some very important things happening behind the scenes. donald trump is hosting a potential running mate this weekend. and here hillary clinton is preparing for what could be the long-awaited interview with the fbi. her top staffers have already

given testimony and we believe that the time for her to talk to the fbi is approaching perhaps as early as today. hillary clinton's washington, d.c., home has been busy with comings and goings this week. clinton has no public events today, but her interview with the fbi about her private e-mail server is expected soon. her campaign is not commenting. on the republican side, the intrigue is about the running mate search. nbc news caught up with newt gingrich in aspen. the former house speaker says it's trump's call, but he's open to joining the ticket. >> certainly something we would discuss seriously with donald. >> reporter: gingrich along with new jersey governor chris christie and indiana governor mike pence are all being vetted by trump's team. nbc news that learned pence will meet with trump today at this sprawling trump national golf resort. >> we're going to win, win, win. >> reporter: trump is just back

from colorado, a conservative event with angry confrontations outside, and trump fanned the flames over bill clinton's private meeting with the attorney general. >> bill clinton goes in the other day into an airplane. >> reporter: trump was incredulous that the former visited with loretta lynch at the phoenix airport to talk golf and grandkids while the justice department is investigating hillary clinton's private e-mail server. >> he opened up a pandora's box. >> reporter: after widespread criticism over how that looked, the attorney general expressed regret friday. >> i certainly wouldn't do it again. because i think it has cast a shadow. >> reporter: and loretta lynch also pointed out that she intend, as a political appointee, to take the advice of the career prosecutors who have been working on this investigation of the clinton e-mail server for a long time, and that is an attempt to

reassure those who might think there was something improper about the meeting between herself and the former president. both say it was just simple conversation. also this week, hillary clinton is adding an event to go visit atlantic city to try to highlight some of donald trump's business bankruptcies from the past. sheinelle? >> always busy. kelly o'donnell, thank you. in florida a state of emergency at several beaches and, as you know, it couldn't come at a worst time on this holiday weekend. people are now being urged to stay out of the water because of a massive algae bloom. nbc's gabe gutierrez in stewart, florida, with more. let me start with this question, what exact ly is an algae bloom. >> reporter: hi, jeff, good morning. it's this massive buildup in -- of algae that is akccumulating here along the shorelines across some riverways here in florida. this thick green mess really isn't going anywhere. later today a protest, a rally is planned by several residents who say federal and state

officials aren't doing enough to get this under control. florida has seen many algae blooms before but never quite like this. this morning an algae attack is ravaging even more of the florida coast. at risk more than 300 species of rish and wildlife. >> this is beyond just an he can lodgecal disaster. it's an economic disaster with long term implications. >> reporter: governor rick scott has declared a state of emergency in four counties but on this crucial tourist weekend authorities in palm beach county are insisting their beaches are clean. >> as of this time it's absol e absolutely safe. >> reporter: still, they've post add no swimming advisory for one shoreline after algae was sp spotted. >> and it's coming this way next. >> reporter: today another protest planned in martin county where some residents blame the mess on pollution from lake okeechobee trickling downstream. >> at this point it's getting catastrophic to our county. >> reporter: researchers say other factors may include warmer temperatures and heavy rain this year feeding the algae growth. >> it is kind of a perfect storm.

friday. parts of the park had to be evacuated when an orangutan broke out of its exhibit. the animal suddenly fell from the trees and then climbed on to an exhibit sign, but there was no confrontation with any guests. park officials said the orangutan was safely tranquilized, captured, and then returned to its enclosure. he was monkeying around. passengers aboard a delta flight from detroit to new york state had some uneasy moments on friday. take a look, the bottom of the cabin filled with fog as the flight landed in westchester county. passengers posted pictures and video saying it felt strange to see the fog swirl around their fe feet. the airline said passengers were never in danger and explained the incident was due to condensation. and the mega millions jackpot getting bigger this morning. there was no winner for the $415 million prize in last night's drawing so on tuesday good news, you get another chance to win the jackpot. it's going to go up to at least

charged. they say drug and alcohol were not a factor. new gun control laws this california are bringing joy to many local gun shop owners. that's because business is booming. gun shop owners say tightening the rules has more people coming in, looking to make purchases before the rules take effect. the new laws include a ban on magazines that hold more than ten bullets, back ground checks to buy ammunition and gun loan restrictions just to name a few. some folks say the move is understandable but won't prevent gun violence. >> i definitely did buy a lot more than i should have. if it does help people sleep at night, fine. >> governor brown signed six bills yesterday to tighten gun control laws. they will go into effect in january. demonstrators gathered on the golden gate pribridge to protest the new law that requires school children to get all vaccines before returning to

around the inner bay. 67 for san francisco. still a few 80s for places like santa rose, concord, livermore and san jose. but the good news is we don't have any 90s to contest with today. so that is the sweet relief that we get at least for this saturday. but temperatures do go back up for tomorrow. we'll talk about the full forecast fourth of july coming up. tragedy in south bay prompting awareness and as. this comes after a driver hit and killed a 6-year-old boy in a parking lot. the incident happened just after 9:30 thursday night at the oak ridge mall. the boy was holding his mother's hand when it happened. many people say they are keeping a close eye on their kids. and they are also pledging to be more alert and go at a slower pace hoping to prevent something like this from happening again. >> these cars run across and some people they just don't don't want to stop, they just want it deep going and mad dash.

>> usually i'm very careful. i hoeld my daughter's hand. but i don't want to happen in the parking lot anymore. >> police say the driver involved in the deadly crash is cooperating and has not been charged. they say drugs and alcohol were not a factor. new gun control laws in california are bringing joy to many local gun shop owners. that's because business is booming. gun shop own hers say tightening the rules has more people coming in looking to make purchases before those rules take effect. the new laws include a ban on magazines that hold more than ten bullets, background checks to buy ammunition and gun loan restrictions to name a few. some folks say this move is understandable but will not prevent gun violence. >> i definitely did buy a lot more than i should have. if it helps people sleep at night, fine. >> governor brown signed six bills yesterday to tighten gun control laws. they go thin effect in january.

as millions of americans travel this weekend. let's begin with nbc's morgan radford at jfk international airport in new york. how is it going so far? >> reporter: sheinelle there's beefed up security here at jfk. there was a security scare just three days ago. thankfully everything did turn out to be okay but, still, across the city 1,000 newly sworn in police officers are patrolling new york while 5,000 officers are patrolling chicago and the coast guard is sweeping the west coast. but still, sheinelle, a lot of people i spoke to said they feel pretty safe. take a listen to this it dad. do you feel safe traveling? >> well, you know, i have a lot of faith obviously in our security and our government trying to keep the citizens safe and at the same time as a parent i also want what's best for my child. i try to keep my eyes on him as best i can and pray for the best. >> reporter: the reality is, though, sheinelle, 85% of travelers are actually getting

behind the wheel especially since gas is down to $2.28 a gallon. authorities say no matter how you're get to go where you're going, it's important to stay vigilant this weekend is not about fear. it's about freedom. sheinelle? >> we'll take that. morgan, thank you. dylan has made her way outside for another check of the weather. another good one in the northeast. it is going to be really nice in the northeast. almost chilly because the cold front that front us storms cleared out the humidity. we do have heavy rain moving through eastern kansas and northeastern nebraska right now. we have this stalled front. and what that means is the rain is going nowhere fast. these areas of low pressure will continue to pass through the midwest meaning that we do have the potential of some flash flooding because some of these downpours could produce 3, 4, 5 inches of rain in a short amount of time. as we go through the day today, we are going to continue to see the rain fall in places like kansas city through st. louis and by the time we get to monday evening in time for the fireworks, it's going to make its way all the way over to

washington, d.c. take a look at some of our rainfall totals. we could see as much widespread 3-5 inches but some isolated higher amounts closer to 5-8 inches and that's why we have the flash flood watches in effect. something we need to keep an eye on in that one area all weekend long. jeff? >> dylan, thank you so very much. c california once again has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation as governor jerry brown signs sixth new gun control measures. part of the changes will limit magazine capacity to ten bullets, require background checks for those purchasing ammunition, and restrict the lending of firearms. the fourth of july weekend already starting off with fire work as ohio holds its largest display, and sales are expected to skyrocket for the holiday as states relax their laws. the industry anticipates a big bang with fireworks bringing in a record $800 million. now for a sad update about a person we first introduced you to last year. you may remember i had a chance to meet the nation's oldest park ranger. she's 94 years old.

her name is betty. unfortunately, she is recovering this morning from a beating and a robbery at her home. police in california say an intruder repeatedly punched her before she was able to lock herself in a bathroom. among the items he stole from her, look at this, it was a commemorative coin she received from president obama. that coin will be replaced but when we heard about the story it grabbed our attention. it's absolutely heartbreaking. >> it's horrific. who in the world -- >> it's so sad. >> the burglary and the robbery aside, who punches a 94-year-old woman at all? >> this is a woman who people sign up for her tours months in advance. she's very well known in the community. people are so proud of her. so it probably wasn't a secret that she received this coin and this coin was in her home, but the fact somebody broke into her home and they didn't just steal it, they punched her, attacked her. >> disgusting. >> we hope that person is caught. >> maybe president obama will give her a new one in person. >> that's a nice eidea actually.
