happy fourth of july -- plen ofe independence day -- but poce area are ogthers around t bay happy fourth of july! plane itenty of people will be enjoying america's independence day, but police and firefighters are cracking down on those celebrating with illegal fireworks. scenes like this have people on edge. fire danger very high. we're tracking several fires burning up-and-down the state. >> your fourth of july weather is going to be another nice day. "today in the bay" starts right now. thank you for joining us on this monday. >> kari hall is here. the forecast should be okay for fireworks. >> it looks good for fireworks. the only concern is low clouds and fog in san francisco.

last year they were shot directly into the fog. that may be an issue as we go into tonight. as we start out the day, we have the clouds and the fog in san francisco. it's 56 degrees there and coastal clouds in the peninsula. it's 57. 53 in the north bay. as we head into the afternoon it will be up to 76 degrees. beautiful weather! nice and sunny, warm for the inland areas. not too hot. mostly sunny in the north bay and up to 76 degrees as we head into the several days we'll keep this weather. we'll talk about what to expect tonight. it's coming up in the microclimate forecast. firefighters were kept busy overnight in the east bay fighting a string of small grass fires that eventually merged into one fire. crews were called to an area in martinez. no word how many acres were burned or whether fireworks

could be at the root of the cause. >> this time of year fire danger is generally high for the fourth of july. police and fire crews around the bay area -- >> illegal fireworks one of the threats to start the fire. as today in the bay reports, plenty of people have been lightening them all over the bay area. >> boom, boom, boom, pause. >> reporter: that's what susan said she heard for the past couple of weeks. fireworks for hours disturbing her and her birds despite the long-standing firework ban in san jose. take a look at images captured at nbc's bay areas across san jose. you see fireworks lightening up the sky. >> they're not good. they're not supposed to it in a residential neighborhood. >> reporter: her fire captain it's more than a nuisance. >> frustrating. not just me but every firefighter in the county. we know how dangerous they are.

>> reporter: mat low and others hope this year will be different. thanks to new laws and stiffer fines. before they received a criminal citation issued only by police. this year fire officials, code enforcers, and park rangers can cite offenders. the citations are considered a city administrative fine. first-time violators are fined $500. second-time violators $700. and third time violators $1,000. >> i ask people not concentrate on what the law says and concentrate on what is safe. >> reporter: she agrees. for her it would mean a good night's sleep. >> because i have a problem. i have to have my window open at night to get fresh air but i cannot keep it open because of the the noise. >> the weather is a concern for the biggest fireworks show in the bay area.

it's in san francisco. but the question is will the fog come? crews set up the massive display that will last more than 20 minutes. there's a new feature that allows people enjoy the show's music even if they're not close to the pier. >> the audience, no matter where they are, if they're not in the water front, they can download the app and get the sound track on their phone. kind of cool and high-tech. >> i like it. the app is called pyro spectaculars. it's free for android and iphone devices. fireworks will be launched near pier 39. for a full list of fourth of july festivities where you live, go to nbc bay area online. firefighters say that slightly milder conditions are helping hold the lines on several large wild fires burning across the state of california. good news in current county

where the deer fire is listed at 50% contained. it's burned close to 2,000 acres. all since friday. the authorities have not lifted evacuation orders. in sbernardino county, a fast-moving grass fire is fully contained. it destroyed four homes and terrified one resident who lost his dog. >> the flames were beating up against the glass. we ran out. the dog ran out. and we can't find her. >> firefighters believe the fire in bernardino may have been intentionally set. closer to home the trail head fire eldorado county is 20% contained. no structures have been damaged by some 5,000 acres have been burned. a bizarre incident in reno left a man dead and a lot of people rattled. a driver tried to drive his car directly into a crowd. all of it starting yesterday afternoon when police tried to stop the driver of a minivan

near downtown. he kept going and tried to get past a barricade. that's when he allegedly swerved toward the officer causing the officer to shoot the man as he crashed into a vendor. nobody else was injured. an armed man barricaded himself inside a house in gill roy is on the run. police were responding to a domestic violence call when 41-year-old trinidad refused to come out of the home. he reportedly he had -- the street was blocked off. ultimately he fled out of the back of the home prompting a search. the sheriffs deputy did find a gun inside the house but trinidad remains at large. the domestic violence victim was able to get out of the house okay. a san jose family is hoping cell phone video can help them get back valuable family

heirlooms. >> sylvia said her granddaughters came into her house and saw the burglar. they sprang into the action and shooting the video of the culprit. >> when they came back they found the guy here in the hallway. so my other granddaughter took a video of him while he was running and the other one was running after the guy. >> they confronted him directly. during a scuffle the suspect dropped a bag full of stuff. she discovered all her jewelry was gone. she estimates the value at $20,000. what hurts most is a lot of it was given to her by her husband who passed away last year. the family is urging people to share the video in the hopes that someone knows that suspect and brings him back to justice. now back to the fourth of

high speed chase yesterday in the east bay it started shortly before 4:00 in the morning. the police officer tried to pull over the white ford. the driver took off 880 in hayward going as fast as 100 miles an hour. it ended with a crash near the westbound 84 ramp. all fourteens in the car were taken into custody. officers said a firearm was found in the car. nobody was injured. san francisco chronicle made a bold editorial. >> a scathing editorial about homelessness on the front page yesterday. the paper called san francisco's homeless epidemic a civic disgrace and called on city leaders to make reducing homelessness their number one priority. the first time an editorial graced the front of the chronicle in 20 years. it broke the wall between news and opinion, the paper said, because it's an extraordinary circumstance and a critical moment in time. it called san francisco's

it looks like we're in this pattern where we have cooler air and with the cooler air comes the coastal fog and low cloud. we see it parts of the bay area now. live look outside the bay bridge you see a nice clear start to the day. as we go into the rest of the day, all of that clears out for sunshine, and temperatures reaching -- starting out in the upper 50s in san jose. livermore 58 degrees, and oakland at 58, and san francisco 56 degrees, 65 now in palo alto. as we go into the day, this is what to expect up to 86 in concord. san jose 85 degrees. 65 in hudsonville. morgan hills up to 84 degrees. a lot of people will be heading to the beach to celebrate. if you're off today and get to enjoy the beach, it will be in the mid 60s. definitely a jacket needed. in the middle of the day santa cruz will be one of the warmer spots. hopefully you'll have better

luck today. but also keep in mind it will have the risk of rip currents, especially along the coastal waters. we won't be as hot this week. we have the high pressure to the east of us. today and tomorrow where highs for the inland areas will only be in the 80s. that's better than the 90s and triple digits we had to deal with last week. we have an early game at at&t park. the giants and rockies at first pitch 63 degrees. gusty winds and cool out there at the park. so once again we've been talking about what to expect for the forecast this evening in san francisco. the low clouds look to move in time for 9:00 or 9:30. it will be 58 and breezy. yes, it looks like there could be some clouds that put a little bit of a damper on the fireworks show. i wouldn't discourage people from going overall. san jose mostly clear skies. 66 degrees into the next couple of days. our highs will be in the 80s for

going to host a vigil storm for the young student killed in the bangladesh attack. a group of gunmen stormed the coffee shop she was inside of. she attended high school in the city where she died. the capital city of dacca. she began her studies in cal and was working as an intern in bangladesh. tomorrow's vigil is scheduled for noon. a reminder of the life of ellie wiesel. the world trade center was lit in honor of his life. they gathered to remember him. he passed away saturday at the age of 87. many people who never met him showed up outside synagogues to
