"today in the bay" starts right now. >> good morning. thank you very much for joining us on this tuesday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. we have one serious incident on highway 4 but the weather looks decent. >> it does look nice. you know we start out with low clouds and fog this morning. we will have another day with some comfortable temperatures heading into the 70s for most. that's after starting out at 51 degrees in the north bay and 62 degrees in the peninsula. 76 will be the high there and 74 in the east bay. in the upper 70s for the south bay and north bay as well as the tri-valley and san francisco. up to 63 degrees. we'll talk more about the rest of the week ahead. that's coming up. mike has a new crash now in the south bay. >> we're looking over here towards -- of all, let's look at all of your sensors. green except the west 580 out of the altamont. no surprises. we're looking for a possibility

of slowing. earlier crash between 237, off-ramp there into milpitas. looking for more. chp, if you have info call them safely from a hands-free device. over here, serious crash that kris talked about. three of four lanes blocked eastbound at hillcrest overnight just before 3:00 in the morning a deadly crash as a pickup truck rolled over. chp hopes to have the lanes open any second now but we'll track that as far as your impact on your xhoo it. right now very light. breaking overnight, a house up in flames in the north bay reportedly sparked by illegal fireworks. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene with a mat rush the douse the flames. they're out now, right, bob? >> they are. good morning to you. as you can see behind me the vallejo fire department was able to keep the fire contained to the garage at this home here. we're not far from discovery kingdom, the amusement park here. did not damage the interior of

the house itself. i just spoke briefly off camera with the homeowner who doesn't think that it was a fourth of july celebration. rather a faulty appliance, perhaps a fridge that started this fire. but the fire department tells us otherwise, that they believe it was an illegal fireworks that caused this man's garage to burn. >> the fire was held to a single alarm. we had a fire investigator on the scene that reported the cause of the fire as illegal fireworks started on the house that reached the wall and made it to the garage. >> the homeowner, his wife, child, and dog fortunatelies skated unhurt. they are now staying at a hotel down the street from here. reporting live in vallejo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you have been much. in san jose, the sky lit up overnight with a dazzling display of pyrotechnics. some of it sanctioned, some not. this year the city council approved a measure that made

illegally using fireworks a pricey mistake. >> increased fines, increased enforcementibility. it's not just the fire department or the police department anymore. the park rangers and code enforcement can issue the citations. is it going to be as effective as we would like? we won't know that until afterwards. >> for the first time ever people can report their neighbors by going online. fireworks related violations will cost anywhere from $500 to 1,0$1,000 depending on the numb of violations. even jail time is a possibility. today filled with loud booms and popping as lots of illegal fireworks on independence day. >> in san francisco the fireworks show always goes on no matter what the weather delivers. of course this one is legal. it was an explosion of color just below the thick fog bay. lots of ooh and aahs as they crowded along the water front for a chilly fourth of july fireworks show last night.

>> this kind of weather is different for it to be july. where we live it's really hot. >> it's not l.a. it was cold. it was a costly independence day as well. parking rates were high. we heard a lot of folks complaining about the prices being outrageous. but souvenir shops were raking in the dough. lots of sweatshirts and hats were sold because it was chilly. despite the weather and parking many say it was a picture perfect independence day celebration in the city by the bay. it was a busy fourth for the coast guard. four people were rescued and three separate incidents from the waters of the bay. there was a sailboat that capsized off the coast of rodeo. oneern p pulled out of the water there. then a man with a medical emergency was rescued from a sailboat near treasure island. finally, two people were rescued after their kayak capsized near pier 40 in san francisco. an 18-year-old armed man was shot and killed by san jose police officers in the allen rock neighborhood last night.

it happened just before 9:00 on feller avenue near story road. family members say anthony nunez seen here was inside a home holding a gun and shot himself in the head. nunez survived that and then was standing outside when officers arrived. he was still hold that gun. it's not exactly clear what led up to officers firing at nunez. neighbors we talked with were shocked. >> yeah, it's pretty sat. it's pretty sat, that's what happened. especially on the holiday. >> really crazy here. it happened. >> no police officers were injured. the shooting is under investigation. google's mountain view headquarters appears to be under attack from a man they believe is -- the man believe the tech company is tracking him. san jose mercury news reports that diaz has been charged by federal prosecutors for arson. he's charged for throwing molotov cocktail at a google car in may. that is the video that you're

looking at right now. a few weeks later diaz shot at a google building. then he threw another molotov cocktail at a self-driving car, destroy that vehicle. all of those attacks happening late night or early in the morning. nobody was injured. hear the music, a month away until the start of the olympic games in rio. they begin august 5th here on nbc bay area. in pbrazil though the pace is frantic. >> there's a lot to do. sometimes that even includes finishing up construction of the venues including beach volleyball. from the looks of it brazil may need a miracle to finish everything on time. rio organizers insists everything is coming together and they will be ready to roll. >> we are scheduled to have everything done by the 18th of july. 15 we start, the final round of cleaning. just so we start the training of

volunteers. >> 14 days away. >> no pressure. >> no pressures. >> on july 15th the massive scleen-up is scheduled for the area surrounding the venues. athletes will have access starting july 24th. live look at san jose's center where they are getting ready for one of the most anticipated events leading up to the olympic games. u.s. women's gymnastics team trials start on friday. perhaps this year's biggest standout, 19-year-old who recently won the u.s. women's gymnastics championships. she's generating a lot of bay area buzz, in part because many people believe she can win several medals in rio. >> not only is she most likely the best gymnast in our country but she's proven time and time again she's the best gymnast in the world. >> olympic veterans alley raven and gabby douglas considered front-runners to make the u.s. team. the entire event is sold out.

all right. you can understand why. >> oh, yeah. >> quite a bit of interest here. a lot of interest on our forecast. carry, seeing more of a cooldown. >> very nice. start out with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. a lot of clouds and fog in spots. but then we warm up to 84 degrees in los galos and palo alto. 76. low 60s for san francisco with up to 80 degrees in fairfield. in the east bay, 68 degrees. for oakland and we will see some upper 70s to low 80s in the tri-valley. i'll have a look at the complete microclimate forecast in less than ten minutes. we had the early morning deadly crash which had the majority of the freeway closed down. over here, highway 4 has completely reopened. it was eastbound highway 4 where the deadly crash happened around hillcrest. all lanes are reopened.

news before the bell we turn to kate rogers live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, kate. >> good morning to you. wall street could start the week in the red as traders return from the fourth of july holiday. markets managing to shrug off much of the turmoil cowsed by the brexit vote. the dow posting best weekly performance of the year. the big economic data of the week comes of course friday with the monthly jobs report for june will also get the minutes from last month's fed meeting. on friday the dow rising 19 points to 17949 and the nasdaq also up 19 points to 4862. amazon is quietly changing how it entices people to buy item '. "the new york times" reports the online retail giant is dropping any mention of a list price or what a product originally costs versus what amazon's actually charging for it. the move comes as discounts online and in stores are coming under scrutiny for being less than they seem and as amazon

shifts from selling one product at a time to a major retail eco system. and the company behind ashley madison which was hit by a massive hack attack last year is being investigated by the federal trade commission. the exposed personal info of millions of people who signed up for the infidelity insight. the top executives are sorry for what happened and they should have spent more time on security. back over to you. >> kate rogers, thank you very much. back to our olympic preview coverage with a month to go before the start of the summer games, maybe you didn't realize a new sport setting sail for the summer games. it is women's high performance skiff sailing. a harness and wire is all that keeps skiff sailing duos from hitting the ocean water. helen scott is a recent stanford graduate. she will be one of the first women to compete in the first olympic high wire act. >> super dynamic. always changing and definitely

livermore today we start out at 7:00 at 57 degrees. our temperatures warming up into the upper 70s right around lunchtime. and by 3:00 we're at 81 degrees. we'll be there just briefly. then it starts to come back down, back into the upper 50s late tonight with mostly clear skies. a look at all the highs for around the bay area. in fairfield, concord, 80 degrees. in oakland, 68 degrees. san jose will be up to 79. morg morgan hill, 76 degrees. it gives us the morning clouds and once again that afternoon sunshine with the nice onshore flow. that continues for the rest of the week. and this area of low pressure to the north of us keeps the heat in check. we don't see the strong area of high pressure dominating across the region and causing that heat to build. a change in that weather pattern brings our highs back into the 80s this week in the south bay. in the peninsula, high 70s. san francisco will be in the 60s. morning clouds once again there

and some fog may be an issue during the nighttime hours over the next several days the tri-valley will be in the low 80s. the east bay up to 76 degrees by friday. let's head over to mike now and see a couple of crashes heading into the fremont. >> two reports just came in for fremont. and this is in the earlier one around 2:37. let's show folks the maps, the speed sensors looking just what you would expect. over here this area heading up out of milpitas and fremont. two crashes reported although they sound identical as far as the details. somewhere between mission boulevard. we don't see slowing on the sensors. earlier crash at 237 and 880 has cleared up. the sensors don't show any slowing. live camera shows us a smooth easy drive. northbound with the taillights past the truck scales. no surprises. again, out of the east bay and in towards silicon valley. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up next, demanding change. protest, one bay area lawmaker

rio games and more bad we are now just a month away from the rio games and more bad news coming out of brazil. this ask the venue for the olympic sailing event. it is full of trash and debris, according to environmental experts and athletes, too. the spanish team saw a dead animal floating in the bay during the practice. brazilian authorities say the water venues will be clean in

time for the games. in the race to create a vaks seen for the zika virus scientists at one company say they are getting close to having their product ready for production. the company last month made headlines with their -- world with their vaccine gave immunity to the zika virus in mice. their next step is human clinical trials. researchers is a say they have done in months what can often take years to accomplish. >> our reaction was, okay, it can work once, it can work twice. >> the company is looking for human volunteers to conduct the clinical trials. the hope the vaccine will be on the market in at matter of months. democrats staged a 25-hour long sit-in demanding a vote on the gun control measures. jackie speier is bringing that fight to redwood city. speier and many others took a seat at the fox theater downtown calling on republican leaders to take action. speier is particularly

uncomfortable for two. yes, the activity northbound 880, at missions, closer to dlr,ic, is reported in the center divide. we don't see slowing and no major injuries. we'll show you the san mateo bridge. just starting to see the volume build. westbound, we do have a good number of cars heading over to the peninsula side. but no problems and visibility, you can see the peninsula hills. good stuff. back to you. >> thank you very much. breaking overnight, in vallejo, firefighters say illegal fireworks was the cause of this fire which caused part of a home to catch fire. crews were called to the home around 1:00 this morning. two adults and one child made it out safely. the fire ignited along a wall next to a garr ralk. part of the home was saved but for now it's uninhabitable. while firefighters blame illegal fireworks for that blaze the homeowners believe it's because of a faulty refrigerator. bob redell is bring us a report coming up in the next half hour. 18-year-old man is dead shot

by san jose police on the fourth of july. this happened last night on the 900 block of feller avenue. >> "today in the bay's" tan is live in san jose with how it all happened. we are hearing firsthand from the man's family about what they saw. good morning. >> good morning, sam and kris. well, just less than an hour ago we did catch a glimpse of family members talking with police outside on their driveway as officers were taking down crime tape and leaving this scene. now, this is the first chance we've been able to see the house where this young man was shot just a couple of houses in from the corner of feller and story road. the family members have asked for privacy after this traumatic event. we did talk to an uchkle of the man who was shot and killed by police. his name, anthony nunez. he was just 18 years old. his uncle said nunez was inside the home where he fired a home, grazing himself in the head. when police arrived just before 5:00 p.m. yesterday the uncle says nunez was outside alone holding the gun.

at that point it's not clear what happened but he said nunez was shot and killed. neighbors told us they can't believe it. >> yeah, it's pretty sat sad. it's pretty sad that's what happened. especially on the ho i day. >> really crazy here what happened. >> family members told us off camera that no police officers were hurt. the uncle and the other family members are just waiting for more information from police. now, police didn't tell us much either this morning but did say this is a very unusual event in a usually safe and quiet neighborhood. now, we will bring you more updates as we throughout the newscast as well as on our website. live in east san jose, lili tan, "today in the bay." it is expected to a sad day on the cal campus today as uc berkeley student is remembered, honored by her fellow students. she was killed in the terror attack in bangladesh. yesterday the family of a a

risch she jain. >> they supported her mother as she went by the ambulance carrying her daughter's body. 18-year-old tarishi was an indian student and working as an intern in bangladesh. the victims were honored yesterday in a stadium in dhaka. a vigil will be held in her honor at noon. saudi arabian leaders this morning are reassuring people their country is secure following three separate suicide bombings that killed at least four people. the bombings occurred yesterday as muslims celebrated the end of the holy month of ramadan. one bomb targeted the holy city of medina, home to the prophet's mosque, the second holiest site in islam. at least two policeman died in that attack. another bombing targeted the u.s. consulate in the city of jetta. two guards were injured. a woman and her dog were rescued off a cliff yesterday.

the pair was stuck some 200 feet down that cliff side. san francisco firefighters got out there quick and pulled the woman and her pet to safety in just 12 minutes. everyone is doing okay this morning. some of the world's best stumble on the road to rio and that was the case of yesterday's u.s. track and field olympic trials when one of the favorites to win went down in a heap during the women's 800 meters. former cal bear montano's olympics dreams ended when she clipped legs with brenda martinez. both were ift fas to win the 800 meter final. you might remember montano finished fifth in the 800 during london games as she believes that this was her time. >> especially when, this is it, you know? >> and here it is. track officials reviewed the collision and called it accidental. no penalties were issued.

50s as you head out the door this morning. going back to work and here's a look at those highs today. up to 80 in fairfield today. concord will be at 80 degrees. the morgan hill at 76. also 76 in palo alto. in san francisco, highs reaching into the low 60s. and upper 60s for oakland. into the next few days our weather stays cooler than average. i'll talk about that in a few minutes. mike's got two spots with brake lights on. >> no major problem as far as our speed sensors go. warn the folks about, first of all, look over here. out of the altamont. look how slow it is. 205 out of 580. then it starts to clear out once you start getting cleared out of the hills. little debris reported. watch westbound 580 for that. no lanes blocked. over toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights are on. left approach looking light. fast track lanes have build up and cash lanes off to the right. slower build this tuesday after a holiday weekend.

sheñ and firefighters were able to get the dog and remove it from any danger. and get the dog back to the owner and it was a very happy reunion. >> crews did eventually put out all of those flames. return dog to owner. but there's still a lot of damage to the house. no injuries were reported. grass fire broke out in pittsburg yesterday just across from bay point, not far from homes. you can see in the video how close it was. the fire quickly spread to several acres in a new subdivision off leland road just south of highway four. fire burned grassland and inched

close enough to homes to actually burn the fences but the houses were okay. a cause is now under investigation but firefighters say fireworks may be to blame. kris, this was the sign that graded many people at three different parks in the east bay yesterday. don castro and shadow cliffs regional parks had to close because they were at capacity. now to the holidays over the parking lot at the golden gate bridge vista point will reopen today. once that fog decides to leave. it was closed this weekend in an on going effort to ease the traffic back up on the bridge. during three-day holiday weekends visitors are encouraged to take transportation, tour buses or ride sharing services. 31 days to the summer games in rio and athletes are competing in 41 different events. one of the sports that's talked about maybe the least is archery. >> it outside the olympics it is growing in popularity, especially in the bay area because of the movies like the

thundered over new york citlt ♪ the nation's largest fireworks display thundered over new york city last night. it was the macy's fourth of july fireworks and more than 56,000 pyrotechnic effects were set off. and with more than 1 million people in attendance security was at an all-time high with police on alert on any suspicious activity. officers in and out of uniform flooded the city from the ground to the waters and in the sky. >> we believe this is the largest detail in modern times for this event, reflective of the changing world conditions which we've been watching very closely this past week and indeed this past year. >> authorities say what people didn't see is all the action happening behind the skreecenes.
