b nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. >> that breaking news is out of the east bay in emeryville whereas you can see this morning a massive fire gutting a building under construction. that is from about 3:30 this morning. at one point that fire was so large our crews spotted it from the golden gate bridge. >> we do have team coverage on this breaking news. we begin with sharon who has been on the scene since 3:00 this morning. sharon, that fire still big. it's visible from the freeway as well. >> yes. good morning. i saw it on the way in to work and stopped by because i had to take a closer look. and look at what's behind me. right now you still see huge plumes of smoke going up into the air.

firefighters fighting this fire from all angles, from above and below, and we're seeing even firefighters on top of the roof trying to get control of this fire. let's take a look at some of the video that we saw from earlier today. huge flames from the structure fire. it was an apartment complex i'm told. and it was near the end of construction. i heard the walls were up and it looked like a really nice apartment complex. possibly ready to open soon, but now as you just saw, only the frame left. i'm going to show you right now back here live a lot of people actually pulled off the freeway to take a look at this, take a closer look. people have been evacuated from nearby apartment complexes. some people tell me that they actually heard their windows cracking, it got so hot. and they could see the red glow. they got out. so far we heard no injuries. we're still waiting to hear confirmation on that but fortunately the neighbors here are telling me that everyone got

out safely. there was also a senior citizen home nearby here and they evacuated. we're still trying to figure out what the cause of this fire was. again, huge fire. you can see off of the highway 24 and the bay bridge. traffic will be affected. this is right near the highway 80 onramp. san pablo avenue. it's going to be busy around here. a lot of streets closed off in this area. reporting live in emoeryvillmer >> san pablo on and off-ramps over on interstate 80, wider shot. right off the mace. drivers are reporting seeing that. i heard reports also some folks saw i'll out of the caldecott tunn tunnel. the official closure from chp says the only major on-ramp closed is west macarthur boulevard on 580. two blocks away from that fire.

all the activity, avoid the area. you saw the big flames and all the fire crews. here's 24. here's 580. there's interstate 80 all three within the flames. as the sun comes up if there's smoke coming up that will be a distraction as well. the closure, west macarthur boulevard but visible from the freeway and it will be a distraction. there's our shot from emory vis. you can see the glow of the lights and you can see 580 coming right past that scene. we're watching it. back to you. also following another story that's breaking over night. the oscar pistorius legal saga full of twists and turns finally has come to an end. p he was went sensed to six years in prison. >> the sentencing less than the prescribed minimum punishment.

pistorius was facing a 15-year prison term. the judge said that substantial and compelling circumstances existed in the double amputee olympic runner's case to give him a lesser sentence. back home in a developing story in the south bay. string of shootings has neighbors and drivers nervous in san jose. >> between coddle and monterey road were struck by gunfire four times in the past couple of months. two drivers were hurt. one of them grazed by a bullet. another was hit by glass or some sort of shrapnel. all of those attacks happened between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning with the first attack happening back in may. most recent happened just this past weekend. one neighbor says she wants to know why she's only finding out about this now. >> they should at least announce something in the area so people can watch out and be aware of

what's happening. that is so wrong on so many lev level. >> san jose police spokesperson said once they pattern became more clear they dedicated more resources to those crimes. call crime stoppers. you can do that anonymously. two no vvato high school students are accused of killing another high school student. they're going to be in court later this morning accused of stabbing and shooting two teens in may. one of whom did survive. a man was also arrested for allegedly helping the suspects hide. police are still search for another suspect. the verdict is in,al xandier yohn was found guilty. they announced this verdict yesterday. andrew silva was killed in that accident in 2014. 2-year-old silva was riding his motorcycle when yohn ran a red

light. today marks three years since the tragic crash at sfo's air flight. that plane was landing after landing from seoul, south korea, when it struck the seawall. the pilot was flying too low and too slow in that descent. three teenage girls died including one struck on the tarmac by a fire truck. earlier this year the airline agreed to pay about $3.5 million to cover the emergency response costs. fourth of july was a busy one for san jose police. fireworks kept officers working all through the night. here are some of the numbers we're getting. more than two dozen fireworks related calls. two people were injured. one of whom suffered a major injury or injuries. 12 people also got criminal citations. there are no fireworks allowed in san jose. three weeks leading up to independence day there were 80 fireworks related calls with 16

you're looking at an 8-year-old gavin buchanan. he raised thousands of dollars to help bay area police department purchase and train some of those dogs. gavin along with his mom and dad was found dead last september. gavin's older brother is accused of killing them. >> but today they are not focusing on the tragic aspect of this case but celebrating a boy who loved police dogs. there's going to be a tribute to gavin this afternoon and at the police headquarters at 2:00. last february gavin and his parents raised nearly 8,000 doz for safety equipment for a new canine vehicle. that vehicle is going to be

unveiled today. more on the buchanan family. their bodies were found in a burned out cabin. gavin's half brother nolan buchanan was arrested and charged with killing all three. in court today the man accused of killing his granddaughter was a long time public defender in san francisco. 20-year-old angelo sa mora is accused of stabbing marl la zamora to death back home in may. marl la zamora was a well respected public defender. her most notable case was serving as defense attorney forred win ramos convicted in a triple murder case in 2012. the search continues this morning for an army veteran's therapy doc that went missing over the weekend. it's been three days since she saw her cher rished dog leo. she was away from the weekend when he wandered away on the camp grounds.

back to breaking news in emeryville where a massive fire is still burning at a construction site. that video is about 3:30 this morning. many people living in apartment complexes nearby have been evacuated from their homes. at one point the fire was so large our crews was able to spot it on the golden gate bridge. we begin with sharon who has been on-scene since 3:00 this morning. you saw it before you arrived on scene, it was so big. >> reporter: that's right. i was driving on the way to work and i saw this from highway 24. so from the golden gate brinl, the bay bridge, highway 24, a

lot of drivers pulling over to see this right behind me. look. you can still see huge plumes of smoke coming from this structure. it's a five alarm structure fire i'm told. basically earlier this morning huge flames could be seen from the highway. right now they are trying to fight this fire from all angles, from above and from the ground. you can see the fire being fought by the hoses up here, from the lood adder, the engine. we've got at least four engines out here shooting out water from the hoses. and basically what we're told is this used to be an apartment structure. it was under construction. and it looked like it was almost ready to open but then this happened. i'm told that a security guard at one of the apartment complexes actually saw someone near the structure and called it in and heard a loud bang and then the fire started.

we still have to have that all confirmed as far as what the cause of this fire was, but that is what i'm hearing out here. and you can see back here live. a lot of people just trying to pitch in and help out. we're told one of the apartment complexes held a lot of senior citizens so they're here in a nail salon. someone helping out, saying they can stay here while they evacuated the building. so people trying to help out here. the traffic will get really bad and we're going to talk to mike about that a little bit later. a lot of street closures in the west macarthur boulevard and san pablo areas. reporting live in emeryville. back to you. >> let's go to mike who is watching the traffic and how it's going to be impacted. mike, not on the major thoroughfare but a lot of people there and it's going to slow down. >> emeryville, there's a mall nearby and some folks will notice the best buy or home depot as local references. this is not the movie theater but it's not far from there either. this is our camera on the side of the east shore freeway.

we turned it over here. 580. see the freeway if glow is still there visible but much less than it was even just 20 minutes ago. it will be a distraction for these folks off of 580 and likely 24 as the sun comes up. we will track it carefully. you see the vicinity of the maze. right now west macarthur boulevard, the only current closure along with city streets. san pablo avenue converge in the area but so far no major slowing on the freeways. watch for distracted drivers. 4:48 right now. >> we always know that wind is a factor in a fire like this one. breezy. >> yes, it is very breezy, especially around the emeryville area. we'll watch out for the gusts that could continue to pick up as we go through the next several hours. we start out this morning with mostly clear skies. we'll continue to see the sun rise today in the south bay with

a nice clear start and then a few more clouds moving in from the coastline into the inland areas for those late morning/early afternoon hours. looking good as we start out now. and as we go into the rest of the day where temperatures will go from the 50s into the upper 70s in some spots like the south bay up to 77 degrees. 76 in the peninsula and north bay. and san francisco reaching 60 degrees east bay up to 73 degrees. so as we break it down for oakland we will have temperatures in the upper 50s and 60 degrees by 10:00 and we'll see the sun starting to peak out but it doesn't last long. we'll see the clouds moving back in by tonight. 59 at 8:00. and the weather for this evening out at at&t park, first pitch, 60 degrees. upper 50s as we go through the rest of the evening. and the winds coming in from the northwest at 15 to 25 miles an hour. we've been talking about the winds and how it may impact that fire. and we start out with breezy
