of area along 580 and the maze. a six alarm fire tearing through a correction site. another live look on the ground where you can see plenty of smoke from that vantage point, too, still billowing into the air. a fire at 3:00 this morning. a flame to big this morning our crews could see them from golden gate bridge and highway 24. we are at the scene gathering latest information as we speak. she will have a live report when "today in the bay" continues right now. thanks for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. we are going to get right to that story in a moment but first a quick check of weather with kari. >> some parts of the bay area along the coast this morning. clear skies inland. this is the way we started the past couple of days with temperatures in the mid 50ed. also quite breezy in spots. it will be a little bit cooler today than it was yesterday. feeling very nice. only in the upper 70s for the south bay and the tri-valley. and the north bay up to 76

degrees while san francisco is at 60 degrees. we'll take a look at some cooler air in the forecast coming up. mike has word on a new fire in union city. >> that's right, kari. we're tracking two fires off off the freeway. this will be a distraction as well. show you the entire bay. two key areas though. first, they were talking about union city, southbound 880 jammed up towards industrial parkway. pet boy where sounds like there's a fire just at the building or very close to that building off of the freeway. you see this slowing. it is probably smoke visible from the area. we do know that smoke is visible for this fire over here at the emeryville oakland border just off san pablo avenue. 39th, that's the area to avoid. immediate impact is that the west macarthur on-ramp is closed. look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the backup which we expect but you see that plume of smoke in the distance that blends in at a higher level, clearly a distraction. for more from the scene and the

progress that may be being made, we'll send it off to sharon who have been following this since predawn. >> reporter: you're right. this is creating a lot of havoc for people just starting on their way to work. a lot of people being turned away here on san pablo avenue and trying to get on to the 80 eastbound but they're saying, no, turn back and you have to use other side streets. look at this fire me hind me. basically you're seeing a lot of smoke now. they did a good job putting this out. you're seeing it still trying to deal with the hot fog. i'm told on the back side though of this structure from where we are live you can see from the chopper video there are still some structures on fire. caught on fire from the embers of this huge fire. let's look at some video that we shot from 3:00 this morning. huge flames that could be seen as you mentioned from highways around the bay area. highway 24 as i was traveling in to work i saw this huge structure fire. had to pull over and check it

out. this is what we saw. also, photographer josh coming from golden gate bridge saw this huge structure fire from that far away along the bay bridge commuters. people pulling overtaking pictures on the highway from the highway, taking pictures of the fire. it was so massive. tenants here in a nearby apartment complex had to evacuate. >> i'm homeless. i have my car, my motorcycle, everything -- >> stuck in there. >> this is me as i -- right before i decided to evacuate. this is what i woke up to. i'm videoing this from my living room window. and within seconds these windows started to crack. >> reporter: and you can see how hot it got. when we first arrived this is video that we shot at about 3:30 this morning. cars on fire.

it's floating from all of the fire that fell on top and caused these cars to explode and catch on fire. so a lot of residents waking up this morning seeing all the damage. you can see that there's still very active out here. firefighters still trying to deal with some of the hot spots. and i'm told by many residents that they're so worried about even going back into the apartment complex because, as that man you just saw in the interview mentioned, he's worried about water damage and what he's going to return to and have to deal with insurance and possibly not be thinking he's going to be homeless now for a while. we heard that there's water pressure that needed to be turned up in this area because they were trying to fight this fire for so many hours and the power is out for many of the residents out here. reporting live in emeryville, i'm sharon katsuda, back to you. >> thank you very much, sharon. it's 6:04. we have more breaking news this morning. surrounding the olympic sprinter known as the blade runner. just hours ago oscar pistorius was sentenced to six years in

prison for killing his girlfriend. that all radioing w inruling wa by a south african judge overnight and the sentencing was less than the prescribed minimum punishment of 15-year prison term for shooting reeva steencamp through a bathroom door at his home in 2013. substantial and compelling circumstances axised in the case to give him a lesser sentence. developing now. closer to home, plenty of nervous drivers and neighbors in south san jose as someone is hooting at cars along blossom hill road near poughkeepsie and monterrey road. >> bob redell is live in that san jose neighborhood. four cars have been hit in the last couple of months and it appears to be random shootings. >> reporter: sam and kris, two people have been hurt. fortunately their yirs are not life threatening. san jose police looking for whoever it is who is taking random potshots at cars driving down this section of blossom

hill road in south san jose. blossom hill road of poughkeepsie and monterrey as you mentioned, san jose police know of four incidents over the past two months. each time these shootings taking place between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morn pentagon. the first shooting may 4th, a vehicle was hit. june 2nd, a bullet grazed a man. june 30th another vehicle was hit. this pass weekend a woman driver was hit by flying glass or bullet shrapnel. police tell us there does not appear to be any no known connection between the shooter and the targets. we spoke with a woman who lives here who is upset that the police is just now letting them know about the shootings. >> they should have said something so people could be watching and and be aware of what's happening. that is so wrong on so many levels. >> reporter: san jose police tell us that only recently became clear that there was a

pattern to the shootings. the department tells us they have dedicated more resources to the area to try to catch the shooter. one resident told us he saw a number of squad cars posted along blossom hill. >> the thank you very much. former judges are coming to the defense of judge aaron persky. he is the judge who presided over the brock turner sexual assault case and conviction. the 18 retired santa clara judges have signed an open letter warning that removing judge persky from the pench would set a dangerous precedent. another online petition change.org signed by public defenders and other lawyers also supporting persky and the idea of judicial review. meanwhile, one group is asking for persky's resignation. they spoke up this week and talked to the mercury news. thousand of california yaps signed their online petition vowing to refuse serving on a

jury where judge aaron persky resides but that petition does not indicate how many of those who signed actually live in santa clara county. the search continues this morning for an army veteran's therapy dog that went missing over the weekend. now been three days since she saw her cherished dog leo. she was away for the weekend when leo wandered away on the camp grounds. she suffers from ptsd and relies on leo to cope with nightmares and flashbacks. >> so he's my best friend. he's the love of my life. >> reporter: right now there is a $1,000 reward for leo's safe return. pictures potsted on craigslist and on our website nbcbayarea.com. hundreds of people gathered on the cal campus yesterday. tarishi jain, sophomore economics major was remembered for her community involven't and for her wish and work towards

global peace. she was one of 20 hostages who died in dhaka, bangladesh on friday. the cal student happened to be at that restaurant when armed extremists stormed in saying he wanted to kill all nonmuslims. jain's dorm mate said she never thought she would be so directly touched by terrorism. >> you think it's so far away and that it's never going to occur to you and then it does. >> jain who is from dhaka had gone home for a summer internship. she was working at a bank there. two other u.s. students were also killed in those attacks. it is 6:09 on your wednesday morning. we're seeing a lot of fog and cloud cover out there, kari hall. what are you tracking? >> cooler temperature, too, sam, across the bay area as we look outside. mt. tam, beautiful start to the day. a few low clouds rolling across. otherwise, sunshine. we will only reach in the upper

it is still taking up a large portion of your screen. crews there were doing their best to be able to contain those flames. this is what it looked like at 3:30 this morning when it fully engulfed the construction site. it has forced the evacuations of dozen of people who live nearby. sarn katsuda is at the scene with live reports throughout the rest of the fright. ing ordeal. that is a mother watching as her 4-year-old girl is snatched by someone right from a cellphone store in southern california. it was all caught on store's surveillance video camera in victorville on friday. the little girl was standing next to a candy machine at that cellphone store when a man reached in through the door and grabbed her arm and tried to drag her off. >> i thought they were arguing with each other at first so when i got up to look, i came from behind the counter and i asked what was going on. the mom was in here, she was very hysterical, crying.

her daughter was very traumatized, clinging on to her, wouldn't let go. both babies were crying. >> you heard the clerk mention the babies, that's because the mother was holding on to another child at the same time she was trying to get ahoard of her 4-year-old. the mom and another customer jumped into action. they caught up with the man who reached in to grab the little girl. investigators say the suspect was on drugs when he tried to abduct her. 6:16. hope francis is offering his condolences and prayers for the family of the american student whose body was found in the tiber river in rome. pope francis met with if parents in vatican city today. this was an unscheduled meeting. solomon's body was found in the river over the weekend. investigators have detained a homeless man in connection with his death. solomon was a wisconsin college student who had just arrived in rome on friday to begin his so mo semester abroad. a warning at your computer

and supreme court ecurity. >> security software, scott mcgrew. that's what's insecure. >> the very software that's supposed to keep you safe, it is a serious enough problem the federal government itself is sounding the warning this morning. homeland security says hackers are able to access computers running semantic security software. you see the irony. antivirus software that is making your computerly weirdly more vulnerable. symantec has a patch. tesla continues to defend itself after a crash of one of the cars in florida. the question is timing. should investors been told about the crash sooner? the crash was may 7th and tesla told the government about it may 16th. may 18th tesla sells more stock. strictly speaking tesla told the government even sooner than it had to but questions remain should it have told investors before the sell of that stock in. we expect markets to sink again today. still worry about the brexit.

temperatures down. so as we head out this morning, low 50s in napa as well as santa rosa. and upper 50s for concord and oakland. as we break it down for oakland we will be at 62 degrees at 10:00 this morning. and lunchtime 64 degrees and a lot of sunshine. we keep the sun throughout the day with the highs briefly hitting the upper 60s and then coming back down into the 50s. we'll be up to 78 degrees in livermore. san jose, 77. and fairfield at 78 degrees. and this evening at at&t park at first pitch, 60 degrees. upper 50s by the end of the game. we'll be windy, too. winds coming in from the northwest at 15 and 25 miles an hour. and our marine layer keeps our weather for the next couple of days nice and cool. morning clouds. afternoon sunshine. as this trough digs in from the north it keeps the heat in check and fighting back that high pressure that we're seeing across the southwest. we'll continue on with an ocean breeze that makes it far enough

inland to make it cooler down toward the tri-valley. average high is 86 degrees. we won't even get close as we go into the weekend and early next week. it is looking very nice. highs in the upper 70s for the south bay for the next three days. the peninsula will see more of the same. lower 70s there. san francisco dipping to 59 for a high of saturday. and north bay as well as the east bay and tri-valley all staying in the 70s. now as we head over to mike we see what's happening as you head across the bay bridge toll plaza. >> watching for distractions but the traffic volume is light. that's what's saving our commute. two big fires off the freeway. the first big fire i'm talking about is a big fire anymore. sounds like everything is under control and the slowing over towards union city out of waywawa hayward is not so bad. typical of a light day here. crash at dumbarton is not causing a problem. moving over toward the bay

breaking news at 6:30. evacuations still under way as a six alarm fire destroys a construction site. an apartment building under construction in the east bay this morning. all of it happening near the oakland emeryville border. sharon is at the scene getting the latest information from firefighters and we'll check in with her in a few minutes. thanks for joining us on this wednesday morning. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. as firefighters are trying to contain that fire, breezy out there, kari. >> it has been breezy this morning. winds are about 10 to 15 miles an hour. may be more breezy as you head up around the delta.

it's now in the mid 50s. as you step out the door with low clouds near the coast and sunshine for the south bay. we'll be up to 77 degrees there. 76 in the peninsula and the north bay. and san francisco, only 60 degrees today with some breezy winds. we'll take a look at some cooler air ahead in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. heading back over to mike to see how that fire and other fires may impact your drive this morning. >> talking about multiple fires. that's what we're track for alameda county. active day there. but not so active on the roadways. let's look at the bottom of your screen. just cecil con valley. no big drama for 101 or 87. a crash reported at 880 but no lanes blocked. mild flowing out of hayward and union city. just off of 880 and industrial where we had that fire reported for the union city hayward area. sounds like a warehouse, a nonissue as far as the people involved there. no people involved, i would say. and no problems for the drivers. we will, however, be distracted

by the on going six alarm fire. getten update from sharon on the scene but watch san pablo avenue. west macarthur boulevard an ramp. 580 is also closed. it's visible from 24, 580, and east shore freeway. let me show you our camera where we see it billowing off of the scene. there's 580 going past the scene. you see a lighter volume of 580 coming through the area. the smoke will be an issue or a distraction and the local traffic will be there. that fire has been burning for hours. we've been on air since 4:30 watching this situation. that's what the flames looked like, towering flames at 3:30. devouring an apartment building under construction and almost near completion near the oakland emeryville border. roads in that area are blocked and some people were forced to leave their homes. >> "today in the bay's" sharon katsu t

katsuda has been out there for the last couple of hours. crews let it burn because nobody lives in the apartment complexes yet but the folks who live nearby are pretty concerned this morning. >> reporter: very concerned this morning. fortunately you're right, this apartment complex that caught fire was under construction. so no one inside at the time. look behind me. you can see what is left. just the damage, collapsed frame here that firefighters are still trying to put out. some of the hot spots. you can see from our chopper video just how much moek is going up in the area right now. scene throughout the bay area. as you mentioned, i spotted this on the way in to work off of highway 24. drivers from as far as the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge all saw the huge flames from this structure fire. let's take a look at some of the drone video that we got. they had just recently, since daylight, there's daylight now. they sent in drones the look at where the hot spots are from this fire.

57 pare apparently on the back side where we are standing the fire, the hot flames and embers caused additional fires to homes. we still have to confirm how many and how much damage it caused to those homes. apparently several other structures caught on fire because of these hot embers from this massive fire. again, take a look at some video from we saw at about 3:00 this morning. and you can see the huge flames seen throughout the bay area. all the way as far as the golden gate bridge. you can see the red sgloe ovglo the emeryville. sports authority, homedepot. no residents inside. this was an dependent complex. some nearby residents said i'd looked into nice, ready to open up. but this morning it went up in flames and nearby residents had to evacuate. >> you see more than flames. if you stand over here you can see that intense heat coming out

of both sides. if you notice, that inkra is bent right there. >> and then you can see from the video here that there were cars that caught on fire. they were parked right next to this huge fire, this apartment complex. and basically they all went up, we heard the explosions right when we arrived on scene. now back here live they are still trying to put out the hot spots and the american red cross, such a huge active scene, we don't see them ourselves on the streets but we're told american red cross is here trying to help out the residents who have been evacuated. we're told power is out and there's a lot of water damage in these apartment buildings. the red cross are diverting those evacuated residents to nearby senior citizen center. reporting live in emeryville, sharon katsuda, back to you. it marks three years since that tragic crash of asiana

flight at san francisco international airport. three people were killed. nearly 200 others were injured. the plane was hadding after traveling from seoul, south korea, when it struck the seawall. the pilot was flying too low and too slow in that descent to sfo. three teenage girls died including one who was struck by a fire truck on the tarmac. earlier this year the airline agreed to pay about $3.5 to cover the cost of the emergency response. two novato high school students accused of killing a fellow high school student is expected to enter pleas today. they will be in court later this morning. they're accused of stabbing and shooting twos back in may. one of whom did survive. the men were arrested for helping the suspect to hide out. police are still looking for another suspect. 6:36. also in court today the man accused of killing his aunt who

was a long time public defender in san francisco. 20-year-old angela zamora is expected to enter a plea later this morning accused of stabbing marla zamora to death back in may. marla zamora was a well respected public defender. most notable case was serving as defense attorney for edwin ramos convicted for triple murder trial in 2012. a woman says she was held at knife point and raped by someone she knew who she had just had dinner with. >> "today in the bay's" lili tan is live in palo alto with word on an arrest in this case. what's the latest? >> a palo alto man is behind bars this morning after police say he invited a woman from a dinner party into his house for a glass of water and then raped her and threatened her with a knife. this allegedly where it happened on willie way at his home p. the two were at a dinner party with friends earlier and a woman

who were in her 20s gave him a ride home. he invited her in for water and rest after she mentioned she was tired. that's when ms. say the man, 27-year-old yu eks zhou sexually assaulted her and held her at knife point for hours. she got away and reported it to police the following day. the incident happened on june 24th but police arrested him yesterday on suspicion of rape, sexual battery, and false imprisonment. zhou is in santa clara county jail on half million dollar bail. investigators are still looking for more information and ask if you have anything on zhou or the incident to call palo alto police. live in palo alto, i'm lili tan, "today in the bay." the security of the rio olympic games is now in the hands of brazil's national force. brazil minister justice presided over a ceremony where patrol of the olympic facilities were officially transferred. the division is made up of more

update to breaking news live to emeryville and here's our camera on the ground right now. you can see that firefighters made good work of that six alarm fire burning in emeryville. a building under construction, an apartment complex is now burned and some of the homes, condos, town homes nearby in that border land area of oakland and emeryville are also at risk. look at the flames as they were ramging this morning. this is from our live camera looking in to emeryville this morning. you can see just how big the flames were. how far away it could be seen. sharon katsuda is live at the scene and she will bring us a report at 6:56. new this morning, long awaited release of pritt tan's inquiry into the 2003 invasion of iraq.

it's 57 degrees in concord, napa, at 52. san jose starts out the morning at 55 degrees. as we break it down for berkeley today, morning clouds still by 11:00. we have clouds rolling through. and mostly sunny skies throughout the afternoon, with temperature of 66 degrees right at 5:00. and some low clouds starting to move back in by 9:00 this evening. a look at all the microclimates will be up to 79 degrees in morgan hill. half-moon bay, 60 degrees. also 60 in san francisco with a hard time getting rid of those clouds in parts of the city. 75 degrees in santa rosa. 88 -- 83 degrees in brentwood and some upper 70s for the tri-valley. the seven-day forecast, bottom of screen shows the temperatures will go down a couple of degrees. and here's part of the reason why we have this marine air that continues to move inland for not only this morning but the next several mornings. and also this trough dipping in from the north. keeping our heat in check with the strong northwesterly flow.

update now to breaking news and it is burned to the ground. a construction site now nothing but a burned out shell this morning after it was devoured by flames early this morning. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda saw the fire from the freeway this morning. she's been out there the past several hours hovering the situation. a lot of people have evacuated, worried about the homes more by, too. good morning. >> it continues a bad scene. a lot of construction workers juries arriving to work and seeing there's no work to go to because this is what you see right now. a complete loss of this apartment complex that was under construction. you can see firefighters still out here trying to put out the hot spots. they have a drone up now that there's day light to try and take a look from above to see where the hot spots are. and on the back side of where we are at, this complex they are fighting fires at homes where the embers caused fires at

nearby homes. you can also see broken out windows along the side here. this nearby apartment complex. and those residents told me you can take a look at the video that we have, the fire about 3:00 this morning. that the flames got so hot they could feel it in their apartment in the nearby apartment complex and that blew out the windows. they had to evacuate. ware told that american red cross is out here evacuating, helping the evacuees at a nearby senior citizen. you can see back here live the firefighters are still trying to put out the hot spots. we have seen right in that area a lot of flare-ups. the cars down below also caught on fire. they were parked right here near the apartment complex. so a lot of damage here as people wake up head to work along here on san pablo avenue. we also heard drivers being
