nbc bay area begins with breaking news. >> gunfire and panic breaking overnight in dallas. five dallas police officers are shot dead after snipers ambushed them in the middle of a peaceful protest. it has been a devastating past nine hours in dallas. good morning on this friday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. let's take you live out to dallas right now where it is 6:30 in the morning. and you can see the city is still very much on edge. and there is a very heavy police presence in the downtown area. right now detectives are starting to process what is a

massive crime scene. it is in stark contrast to how the day started which was with a peaceful protest where nearly a thousand people gathered in the streets to protest police shootings in baton rouge, louisiana, and minneapolis. and then things took a terrible turn. countless gunshots started hailing down at police. >> here are the latest numbers. once again, five police officers are now dead. seven other officers were injured. two civilians were also injured. three suspects are in police custody. and a fourth suspect took his own life after exchanging gunfire with police in a parking garage. for more on the chaos that unfolded we go to nbc news. >> reporter: peaceful protests in downtown dallas thursday night turned violent when authorities say two snipers opened fire on police. people leaving the protest took

cover inside a parking garage, shooting some in the back at what has been called an ambush style attack. >> i was walking and the sniper just started shooting. man, i just saw cops bending over. >> reporter: at least 11 officers were shot with multiple fatalities. one civilian was also injured. three suspects were taken into police custody. one woman inside the parking garage where the shooting began and two other suspects during a traffic stop. police don't yet have a motive for the shooting and are working to make sure that all suspects have been taken into custody. mayor mike rawlings praised police for their action. >> to say that our police officers put their life on the line every day hyberpole, ladies and gentlemen. >> reporter: leslie rendall, nbc news.

president obama is in europe for that nato summit but about two how weres ago he did address the tragedy in dallas. >> the president said that he, like many americans, is horrified by what happened. >> today our focus is on the victims and their families. they are heartbroken, the entire city of dallas is grieving, police across america, this is a tight-knit family, feels this loss to their core. and we're grieving with them. i'd ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families. keep them in your thoughts. and as a nation, let's remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue, not just today but every day. >> meanwhile, protesters took to the streets at freeways here in the bay area. here is the scene that played out in oakland for much of the night. hundreds of people shutting down 880 near broadway. dem straighters made it on the

freeway and blocked traffic in both directions. >> protests were sparked be i the same incident that prompted to protests in dallas and that, is of course, two deadly police shootings this week that have many people feeling outraged. >> no more guns! >> more than a thousand people gathered last night. first at oakland's plaza to protest the police shootings in minnesota and in louisiana. and then vandals targeted the oakland police department along with several downtown businesses. the crowd later moved on to interstate 880 and shut it down. protesters called for change in the way that police treat minorities. >> they need to support my black brothers and sisters who are being systematically hurt in this country. >> my mom is worried about my death every day. my sister is worried about my death every day. >> we want to make sure to take this national moment and continue to point to local police and say, how are things going to change? >> interstate 880 remained

closed until after midnight and only reopened about three hours ago. police so far only reported one arrest. kris, as you mentioned this ground can swell of anger and people reacting in cities all over the country, this is what sparked those nationwide protests. two deadly police shootings days apart. one in baton rouge, louisiana, another near minneapolis, minnesota. state authorities did take the lead already in investigating this shooting in minnesota. the shooting of philando castile. agents from minnesota's bureau of criminal apprehension are reviewing what led up to the officer shoot that man four times as he sat in his car during a traffic stop on wednesday evening. by now you likely know that castile's girlfriend who you see there live streamed the moments following the shooting on facebook. minnesota governor announced yesterday that the justice department will monitor this investigation. dayton says he is heartbroken for the state of minnesota and

he also believes the shooting was racially motivated. >> would this have happened if the driver was white? i don't think it would have. justice will be served. >> minnesota investigators have named the two police officers involved in that shooting. they are identified as jeronimo yanez and joseph cowser. each has been with the state anton any police department for four years. they are now on administrative leave per official police policy. meanwhile, the justice department is almost investigating a police shooting in baton rouge, louisiana. authorities are pouring over more surveillance video from the convenience store where alton sterling died and body cameras the police say were dislodged during that scuffle. cellphone video shows an officer tackling sterling. a second cellphone video shows the officer shooting sterling in the chest. >> we have much more online at nbcbayarea.com. this is a very fluid situation. and we are getting new details from dallas by the minute.

treating the death as suspicious. palo alto pd won't say why at this point. police do say they are not searching for a suspect and that people are not in danger. illegal fireworks creating some tense moments in san francisco general hospital. the hospital was under lock down for hours after a loud boom inside the hospital on the fifth floor. after searching the hospital and securing it sfpd lifted the lockdown two hours later. two word at this point on who lit those illegal fireworks or why. 4:41. the fallout continues in the on going police sexual misconduct criminal investigation that's hitting the bay area. a former oakland police captain who was first put on leave has been fired. ricardo roscoe was currently working as an inspector or the alameda county da when implicated in this wide growing network of criminal accusations. allegations sure faced that he sent inappropriate text messages to a former teenage prostitute.

weather and traffic right now at a quarter to 5:00. winning numbers today i think are 5, 4, 5, 7, high to hid 50 snz. >> yes, 50s across the bay area this morning. also starting out with some clouds and fog. you can see that from our view from emeryville looking at the bay bridge. kind of misty as well. so we may be turn to think windshield wipers for a little while before we head into a much dryer afternoon. and it's 60 degrees in the south bay. it's 57 degrees in san francisco. and 55 degrees in the north bay with some low 70s today for the east bay and peninsula. south bay up to 77 degrees. and 60 in san francisco. with the north bay reaching 76 degrees. so as we go hour by hour for oakland today, some 50s to start out a lot of clouds up until noon. and then we'll see the sun coming out by early afternoon as our temperatures rise into the upper 60s. and it may briefly hit 70 degrees in some spots. but as we see, all of this fog

rolling in, well, that will hang out for a while. at least slow to clear. i don't think it will clear at all today in san francisco with the mist continuing all day long and then later on tonight. it just rolls back in once again into the inland area. the marine air keeping it cool as you see all of the clouds throughout the morning. there will also be a weakening cold front dropping in from the north. that is producing some rain up around portland but for us it's kind of re-enforcing the cool air that we've had throughout the week. and then after that, it will be warming up. we'll be trending slightly above average for the start of the week in the tri-valley. by monday we'll be up to 87 degrees. and staying in the mid 80s as we go boo the start of the week. so a look at all the microclimates and what to expect this weekend. we'll have some highs in the upper 50s for tomorrow. and 64 degrees on sunday. and mostly some 70s, a couple of spots could hit 80 degrees. for the most part it is looking very nice for this weekend. and once again, the morning

clouds and the fog will stay around san francisco for most of the day on saturday. now i'll have a look at what's happening on the roadways. let's check in with mike. >> all right, kari. looking over here toward a big shot of the bay area. not a lot of problems. one report in fremont. fly plo plywood in the lane. not had a problem reported. we'll track that. at oakland, 580 at foothill. reports of a minor crash there. looks like everything is off of the roadway. no injuries. getting over here toward oakland. you talked about the proest thes last night. let's look at our live camera. 880 through downtown oak had, closed until three hours ago. the lane rest opened on the pre-way. everything is back to normal as far as the on and off-ramps. the glow from the light here shows the moisture in the air. that mist might be enough for a swipe with the windshield wipers in spots. mike, thank you very much. we go back to dallas now. live look where the sun is out after the deadliest day for

police officers since 9/11. five dallas police officers killed overnight in an ambush in downtown dallas. this morning crime scene investigators are still processing the scene. you can see some police vehicles in the distance of this live shot. about an hour ago police gave the all clear after they performed two sweeps. the bomb squad was searching for explosives. >> we have been watching the video from last night as well. it was a peaceful protest. it was still daylight when all of this unraveled and snipers started taking aim at police officers. there were witnesses in the crowd who said that they saw police officers just falling to the ground. the protesters there, they did not know what to do at that point. they just started to run. some people covering children with their own bodies. we are going to continue our coverage of what happened in dallas and what led up to it in minneapolis and in baton rouge, louisiana. also, new details now that the justice department is dropping the investigation into

hillary clinton's e-mails. the state department will resume its look into the matter. the federal agency put its own internal review on hold while the fbi investigated potential wrong doing. republican leaders are still calling for more investigation. fbi director james comey had to defend his recommendations to not recommend charges for clinton to the attorney general. during a house oversight hearing committee hearing yesterday. just ten hours ago pieces of wreckage believed to have been from the egypt airplane that crashed in may may have been found on the coast of israel. israeli's prime minister's office said fragments found north of tel aviv. egypt air flight 804 crashed into the mediterranean sea on may 19th. according to data recovered from a con pit voice recorder egyptian investigators say there is a fire and pilots tried to extinguish it before the plane crashed. all 66 people onboard that flight were killed.

the real danger at pamplona's running with the bulls is when one or more bulls become separated from the pack and that's what happened during this morning's run in spain. some of the video from today's event is quite graphic. at this point at least six people have reported being gored including two americans. at least two of those who were injured are now listed in serious condition. we're just hours away from the jobs report to be released today, it is jobs friday. and hotel chains are giving travelers bigger incentives to book with them instead of going through the travel websites. >> always looking for those extra points. for that and the rest of your news before the bell we turn to susan li live from cnbc's world headquarters. good morning. >> good morning to you. wall street, we're in wait and see mode right now ahead of the big jobs report. and stocks that did end mostly lower on thursday with the markets tracking falling oil

prices. as for the actual jobs report today it's likely to show growth rebounded in june following the surprising weakness that we saw in may. striking verizon employees returned to work. dow, recap, falling 22 points yesterday. trading off 17895 this morning. nasdaq also edging up some points, 4876 is where we're kicking off this friday. major hotel chains are attacking and taking on online travel sites like expedia and price line. the "wall street journal" report that hilton, marriott, and others have started offering exclusive discounts of up to 25% off rooms this year for members of their loyalty programs who book directly through their website. this is part of efforts to avoid double digit commissions at hotels are charged by the online travel agents and lyft is offering high class rides. they launched premier in san francisco bay area, new york, and los angeles. and like uber selected offers
