wrapping up. that is when gunmen opened fire in what's been described now as a coordinated ambush-style attack. >> five officers were killed. four from the dallas police department. the fifth was a dallas area rapid transit officer. at least six other officers were wounded along with two civilians. one bystanders told negotiators that he was upset about those recent police shootings and wanted to, quote, kill white people, especially white officers. >> president obama spoke about the attack from poland earlier this morning. saying he was horrified by it, they labeled the attack vicious, calculated and despicable. we have complete coverage this morning. let's start with nbc's gabe gutierrez at the scene for us. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. many streets here in downtown dallas remain closed. authorities have said that they finished their sweep of the area for explosives and have found none.

as you mentioned we just heard a short time ago from the police chief who described in detail the conversation that the gunman had with police while he was barricaded in that parking garage, and he said he did all of this because he wanted to kill white police officers. after this week's police shooting death of black men in louisiana and minnesota what began as a peaceful protest in downtown dallas turned suddenly to chaos. >> move, move! go, go, go! go! >> just before 9:00 p.m., terrified demonstrators running for cover, others stopping to help the injured. [ gunshots ] cell phone video capturing the barrage of gunfire. >> shots fired. officer down. it's an assist officer. >> reporter: police ducking behind squad cars and buildings. one officer ditching his motorcycle taking cover. >> he just started shooting. all of the cops are getting shot. man i just saw cops bending over man like it had to have been like five or six cops, they were

all getting shot down. >> reporter: authorities calling it an ambush. >> we heard the shots. i saw one of the officers land down on his stomach and he was not responsive. they rolled him over. >> reporter: at least two snipers in elevated positions opening fire during the rally on officers who were not wearing riot gear. >> these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: overnight, shocked confusion. dallas coming to grips with a rapidly unfolding national tragedy. >> people saw a baby stroller left in the middle of the street and people walked over to the baby stroller and picked it up. i guess the parent was in shock. >> reporter: the frantic search for answers as a tense standoff was under way. a suspect cornered in a parking garage exchanging gunfire with police.

by 1:00 a.m., authorities say another suspect, a woman, was taken into custody near the garage. two people seen leaving the area in a mercedes were also stopped and being questioned. then horrifying threats from the gunman inside the garage. >> told our negotiators that the end is coming. and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown. >> reporter: within minutes, bystanders heard a blast. by 2:25 local time, that suspect was dead. police swept the area for possible explosive devices and found none. a massive investigation now under way after the deadliest attack on u.s. law enforcement since 9/11. the gunman told police that he was acting alone but investigators are not ruling anything out. they still have three suspects in custody, and they are questioning them. they also revealed that the

suspect died when police sent in a robot and detonated an explosive. that suspect has not yet been identified. willie and savannah. >> all right, gabe gutierrez, thank you. >> nbc's jacob rascon also in dallas for us. he has more on what we're learning about the victims this morning. good morning. >> good morning. if there is any good news in all of this it is that in the last hour we learned that most of the officers injured have actually left the hospital. their injuries not severe. we've also learned the identities of three of the officers who are wounded who are dart officers, they call them. they are omar cannon, misty mcgried and jesus retana. but five other officers lost their lives, including one who was just married. this morning officials with d.a.r.t. the dallas area rapid transit confirming the death of brent thompson. the 43-year-old officer is the first killed in the line of duty since d.a.r.t. formed a police department in 1989.

he joined the force in 2009. d.a.r.t. posting this on its website. as you can imagine, our hearts are broken. this is something that touches every part of our organization. three other d.a.r.t. police officers were also shot in the attack. the other officers shot and killed worked for the dallas police department. authorities say about 800 people were at the demonstration. a reaction to the police shootings of alton sterling in baton rouge, tuesday, and philando castile in minnesota on wednesday. we're told around 100 police officers were assigned to the dallas event. the department strategy, taking a friendlier approach to handling the protester, wearing summer service uniforms, instead of riot gear. just when they needed it most. >> seeing the courage and professionalism and just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. i can tell you, i have never been more proud of a police officer and being part of this great noble profession.

>> reporter: we also learned two civilians are expected to survive their injuries. and nbc news has learned since this attack a significant number of u.s. police departments have now ordered two-man patrols following that attack. willie? savannah? >> that's significant for a police department to do that. jacob rascon in dallas, thank you. >> earlier this morning we spoke with dallas' mayor mike rawlings. we began by offering our condolences and talking about how difficult a day this is for his community. >> thank you. it is painful morning. i was with families last night. officers last night. this is a terrible blow to the city of dallas. a terrible blow to the united states of america. and it calls for us to come together at this time and hopefully love one another deeply. >> there are so many questions this morning. as we understand it, the police have three suspects in custody and one suspect was killed in a shootout with police.

have you learned anymore about who these suspects are, what their motivations or affiliations might be? >> we're undergoing an intense investigation as you can imagine bringing in everybody looking at all of the backgrounds and we don't have any information at this time. we're glad that we took down one of the suspects and we are hopeful that we have got everybody, but we don't know that for sure. >> are suspects in custody cooperating with police? are they talking to your investigators? >> they're not at this point. they're subjects that we're just interviewing. they're being pretty tight lipped at this point. >> mr. mayor, it's willie geist. we appreciate you taking time with us this morning. have they given any indication or little information they have provided of what their motive may have been in that shooting

last night? >> it's simple. they wanted to kill police officers. and sadly they did. that teaches us that these police officers stand between us and every day tragedy. these men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them, and we've got to get to the bottom of it. more importantly, we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the united states of america. this is what happens day in and day out. >> mr. mayor, you mentioned at your earlier press briefing this was a coordinated triangulated attack was the word you used with multiple shooters that had experience with long guns. have you learned anymore about how they planned or carried out this attack? >> we've got some reports out there but they have not been confirmed. at our morning press conference, hopefully we'll confirm those

and be able to give you more information. at this time we don't. >> before we let you go, mayor, i know it's a busy day. there are six wounded officers. a wounded civilian. do you know anything about the severity of their wounds and their conditions this morning? >> i want to make sure we get the numbers right because 12 officers were shot. eight were dallas police officers. five are dead. five were transit officers. two civilians. one male and one female. no one died there. so those are the numbers that i got when i walked in to my office just a moment ago. >> our conversation earlier with dallas mayor mike rawlings. >> again the victims include members of both the dallas police department and the dallas area rapid transit authority. we talked to d.a.r.t.'s president gary thomas and the chief of police james spiller earlier this morning and began by asking about their wounded

officers. we have one officer was preparing to go into surgery. another one was being evaluated for surgery. and one was released to go home. >> are they all expected to survive, chief? >> yes. those three are expected to survive. there is nothing life threatening at that time but they'll have to undergo surgery. >> mr. thomas, what was the role of the d.a.r.t. officers at that event last night? a protest obviously of the officer-involved shootings in two other places. what was the role of your officers there last night? >> we actually run the transit system and we have train lines that go through downtown and there's a station, a rail station, that was very close to where the protest was going on, the event was going on. our officers were there to make sure that our patrons and customers riding trains and buses were able to get on and

off the trains and on and off the buses in a safe and efficient manner. and that they weren't -- that the travel on trains and buses wasn't impacted by the event that was happening nearby. >> chief spiller was there any indication to you or dallas police that there was anything suspicious anticipated at this event? any reason to believe there would be heightened concern? >> we did not have any reason to believe that we were going to have something to occur of this nature. i must say even though we didn't have any information, the training of our officers and dallas police officers was very appropriate for the circumstances and the events that occurred. officers wanted to immediately make sure that the protesters were safe and then get to those officers that were wounded and then trying to engage those suspects.

subsequently, i think that reduced the number of injuries because of the quick response and quick actions of not only our officers but dallas police department officers, we saw less injuries to protesters as well as to officers because of their quick thinking and quick response. >> we know you have a busy morning. we'll let you get back to work. we want to ask you in closing, tell us about officer brent thompson, brent thompson the man. >> well, brent was a great officer. he served as a patrol officer which is what he was doing tonight. he also performed as a rail officer and i would like to point out, brent was recently married in the last two weeks. so this is very heartbreaking for us. not only for that reason but because we lost a member in blue and we have received sympathies

and calls and e-mails from across the country from police departments and citizens throughout the u.s. and canada and england as well as here in the north texas region. brent was a great officer and we will definitely miss him. we make sure that his family is taken care of and that's where our attention is focused now toward the injured officers, brent's family and with the dallas police department making sure we're there for them with the investigation and the care and well-being of their officers also. >> our thanks to chief spiller and chief thomas. >> president obama was quick to denounce the attack from overseas addressing the shootings overnight from the sate of a major nato summit in poland. nbc's ron allen is traveling with the president. he's in warsaw now. ron, good morning. what does the president have to say? >> the events in dallas quickly rose to the top of the

president's judge dean is here in poland. the president visibly troubled and upset by the killing and wounding of so many police officers. >> i believe i speak for every single american when i say that we're horrified over these events and stand united with the people and police department in dallas. >> reporter: president obama saying he offered his condolences to the people of dallas and the city's police force. with the facts of what happened still unclear, mr. obama said he has still reached one unmistakable conclusion. >> there is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against law enforcement. >> reporter: mr. obama attending his final nato summit issued by the global war against isis, russian aggression in europe, pushed aside by the horror back home. arriving in warsaw, the president condemning the killing of two black suspects in louisiana and minnesota. the president who has faced criticism for appearing to back protesters, and not sticking up for police, addressing that issue.

>> i get letters, well meaning letters sometimes, from law enforcement saying how come we're under attack? how come not as much emphasis is made when police officers are shot? and so to all of law enforcement, i want to be very clear. we know you have a tough job. >> reporter: today the president calling for the nation to focus on dallas. >> ask all americans to say a prayer for these officers and their families. keep them in your thoughts and as a nation, let's remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue not just today but every day. >> reporter: as he has after previous mass shootings, the president said the nation must confront the reality of how easy it is for people to get access to powerful weapons. he's asked the white house that the president plans to change his plans and head home from europe early. so far no indication that will happen.

savannah, willie? >> all right, ron allen in warsaw. thank you. the protest in dallas were among many held across the country last night over recent police shootings. the latest in minnesota streamed live online by the victim's girlfriend. nbc's joe fryer is in st. paul with more than that investigation. joe, good morning. >> willie, good morning. protesters here in minnesota say they're saddened by what happened in dallas. one person telling us two wrongs don't make a right. as for the shooting here, state investigators say they collected several videos of evidence including squad car video as the community here remembers the man who died. with philando castile's family leading the way, a massive crowd marched through st. paul. some protesters later breaking away to block streets and rail lines. all of it following an emotional gathering outside of j.j. hill montessori skill where castile worked and was known simply as mr. phil.

>> there's a hole in my heart. >> reporter: students held up signs to honor the man who supervised their cafeteria. >> he's always been the kind of guy you could trust. >> big loss. >> reporter: castile was shot by a police officer wednesday night during a traffic stop. >> they killed my boyfriend. [ bleep ] >> reporter: the aftermath streamed live on facebook by castile's girlfriend diamond reynolds. her 4-year-old daughter was in the back seat. >> you shot four bullets into him, sir. he was just getting his license and registration, sir. >> reporter: it's unclear what happened in the moments before the shooting. reynolds said they were pulled over by two officers for a broken tail light and one officer asked for identification. >> and as philando reached for his license. he began to tell the officer, i have a concealed weapon. and he began to shoot. >> reporter: state investigators now identified both officers. jeronimo yanez who pulled the

trigger and joseph krauser. they say it's critically important to remember that despite the graphic nature of the video there's still a great deal we don't know about what happened in this incident and why. this morning both officers are on paid administrative leave. the medical examiner confirms that castile did die of multiple gunshot wounds. local and state leaders are calling for an expedited investigation saying they don't want to wait months for answers. willie? >> joe fryer in st. paul, minnesota, this morning. >> 7:20 on the west coast. we're going to have more on the attacks in dallas just ahead. let's go to dylan in for al. and get our first check of the weather. >> good morning. on the west coast we're dealing with this cold front that's going to move in. it's producing some heavy rain near crater lake, oregon and also into northwestern, california. this is going to continue to move eastward and gusty winds and also more rain as it does so. we've even -- could even see some snow in some of the higher elevations. that's something we'll be keeping an eye out for. in southern california, things are looking nice and quiet.

it's 7:30 on the west coast on this friday morning. that was the moment of silence held at the new york stock exchange a little earlier this morning. of course, in honor of the victims of that deadly ambush of police officers in dallas. five officers were killed, seven others were wounded. >> three suspects are in custody. a fourth killed after a tense standoff. at one point he told negotiators he was acting alone. but this morning authorities still not sure that they have identified everyone involved. let's go back to nbc's jacob rascon in dallas. good morning again. >> reporter: good morning, willie. the video suggests that the shooting itself, the initial

exchange of gunfire, only took about a minute. but those were a terrifying 60 seconds or so, and six hours that followed before one of the suspects was killed. and they still won't say, police that is, that they're confident that they have everybody in custody. le. >> at 8:58, our worst nightmare happened. >> the nightmare in downtown dallas, an active shooter. >> market and lamar. market and lamar. assist officers. shots fired. shots fired. officer down. it's an assist officer. >> reporter: dallas police now on high alert racing toward the gunfire. >> channel 2. all s.w.a.t. officers on channel 2. saying the suspect has a rifle. >> reporter: rapid gunfire. because i'm a gun owner, i knew it was an assault rifle. >> reporter: police can't find a suspect. >> we got a guy with a long rifle. we don't know where the hell he's at. >> and the officers are being gunned down.

>> like all of the cops are shot man. i just saw cops bending over man like it had to been like five or six cops, they were all getting shot down. >> my car's shot. i'm en route to baylor. let them know i'm coming. >> reporter: the news is bad. >> we found out ten have been shot. three passed away. several in surgery. >> an 11th officer has been shot. >> reporter: twelve officers total were shot and more heartbreaking news from the dallas pd. we're sad to report a fifth officer has died. and law enforcement is learning it's not one suspect, but potentially several, snipers picking off police. >> working together with rifles triangulated at elevated positions in different points in the downtown area. >> reporter: police sharing only a few details. one is a woman. two caught leaving the scene and they tried negotiating with a fourth for hours until those talks escalated in an exchange of gunfire that ended with police detonating a bomb.

>> we saw no other options, but to use our bomb robot and place a device on it -- its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was. the suspect is deceased. as a result of the detonating the bomb. >> reporter: a night of terror, bravery, confusion, agonizing sadness, a night simply unimaginable. and to be clear there are four suspects in the picture. the one who died and three others who are in custody who are not cooperating, police say, with their investigation. and, they have not said whether they are confident that these four were working together, or whether they were part of any group, for example, the group that was organizing and protesting last night, or any others, but they say they're looking into it. savannah? willie?

>> still a lot of work to be done to figure out just how this happened. jacob, thank you. >> given the timing of that attack at the end of a large demonstration, thousands of people were caught in the chaos. among them a couple who joined us earlier and i asked them how they were doing. >> yeah, we're doing good. we're glad to be safe. a little bit tired but no worse for the wear. >> can you tell us what you saw, what you experienced last night? >> let's see. i experienced a lot of fear. a lot of terror. a lot of frustration. a lot of anger. and just all of the emotions. very emotional night. nothing that i anticipated. >> not in the least bit. it wasn't exactly how i thought the night was going to end. we're safe. that in itself is a blessing. >> willie geist here. you arrived at the protest. you say they were breaking up peacefully. police officers telling people

to disperse and go home and then what did you see and hear at that point? >> after the organizers told everyone the night was done, everyone was heading east on commerce. within two minutes or so, i heard a shot. i didn't know it was a gun until i saw everyone rushing toward me. what's going on? i ran back as well. we all huddled up together and everything settled for a minute and we walked forward again and more people were running back and realized that there is a shooter. we had to figure out what's going on. my wife wasn't with me at the time and when we realized they were shooting we contacted each other and she was near where one of the shooters where and rushed to go get her. >> you were separated from your husband at that point near one of the shooters. could you see the shooter? any description of them? >> i could not see the shooter. i was ahead of him.

we were separated at the end of the rally and was headed on commerce toward our car and i heard the first shot but like him i didn't realize it was a shot. and the crowd was screaming and pandemonium. i saw the police car run past. all i did was get a calm spot so i could figure out what was going on and my first thought was i need to get to my car and i need to get out of here. >> that was our conversation earlier with eyewitnesses. >> let's swing over and get a check of the weather now from dylan in this morning for al. >> good morning, guys. we are going to see a bit of a pattern change in the pacific northwest. this dip in the jet stream is going to start to allow temperatures to cool off a bit. we are going to see temperatures a little bit below average, in fact. 72 in seattle for a high today. down through oregon 73 degrees that's about 11 degrees below average. saturday cooler still. portland, 10 degrees below

>> and we have breaking news just in to us. the identity of the suspect who was killed when police detonated a bomb to end a tense standoff with him. sources are now telling nbc news the man was mica xavier johnson, a 25-year-old from the dallas area. let's get more on this from nbc news analyst clint van zandt. clint, good morning to you. >> hi, guys. >> you are somebody who obviously has a lot of experience in these kinds of negotiations, and as we now understand it from the police chief there were several minutes of talking with this suspect, ultimately it didn't lead anywhere. and they ended up sending in this robotic bomb. how unusual was that, and what struck you about the police chief's remarks? >> yeah, it's unusual, in a couple of ways. number one, the police chief didn't mince words, did he? he didn't come up with some catch phrase like anti-personnel distribution device or something.

he said we put a bomb on the robot and we sent it in and we blew this guy up. and of course the reason being, he had already killed multiple police officers. why would you send a s.w.a.t. team through the door to get more officers, potentially killed. you know, i work to talk people out of hostage situations, and barricade situations, a lot of times as an fbi agent. but you know, that negotiator whoever he or she was, they have a lot of input because they have to tell the chief, chief, i think i can get this guy out. or there's no way he's coming out, the tactical team's going to have to do it. we saw that blending that took place last night as they made this critical decision, how do we save lives? and unfortunately how do we take a human life without having more people die? >> clint we started the morning here in the mayor of dallas talked about a coordinated attack that involved triangulation, implying that there was more than one shooter. we know there's one dead shooter

now, a couple other suspects in custody. we don't know if they were involved in the shooting. based on all the new information you heard over the last two hours does this sound like a single shooter incident to you? >> well, there was one witness, willie, that i heard of last night who suggested the witness saw somebody leave with a long, what looked like a gun case, to put it in this mercedes-benz that in the area was subsequently stopped. so law enforcement is going to be able to tell very quickly from the rounds they recover, from the number of people that are actually hit by these rounds, whether it was one weapon or two weapons. again, you get a semiautomatic assault-type rifle, and you can put 30 rounds out of that very, very quickly. and that's really what we hear. we hear a lot of rounds being dumped very quickly by at least one shooter. the question is do we have more than one? you know that the police chief

indicates the one shooter said i did it alone. then again we have the suggestions of a second sniper. we have these other three people that were stopped in a vehicle. so i think law enforcement is still putting that together, and of course, the question looms, was this planned over multiple days? or did it just come up in the last one or two days? >> yeah, and just to add to the pieces of information we have, that the dallas mayor told us that the suspects were in custody are not cooperating, not talking to police. so that change your perspective at all on it? >> well, savannah, it sounds like people who have talked in advance about what we're going to do, if we're going to be arrested. now they also, the shooter also said he had many bombs set around the area. so of course the fbi and the dallas pd had to sweep the area being looing for bombs. they didn't find any. the absence of that with his statement could suggest that this was something put together in a very short period of time as opposed to building a number

news to cover this morning unfortunately. such a sad story out of dallas. >> that terrifying scene in dallas. last night police officers ambushed by snipers several suspects in custody, another dead, identified as a 25-year-old from the dallas area. >> gabe gutierrez is in dallas with the latest information for us. gabe, good morning again to you. >> reporter: good morning. a senior law enforcement official tells nbc news the gunman who police killed in that garage is believed to be micah xavier johnson, age 25, from the dallas area. police also said this morning that while he was speaking with a negotiators in that garage he gave a possible motive for all of this and said that he did this because he wanted to kill white police officers. >> we're hurting.

our profession is hurting. dallas officers are hurting. we are heart broken. >> this morning dallas police chief david brown speaking out in a press conference, sharing new details hours after the end of a standoff between dallas police and the shooting suspect. parking garage. >> he wanted to kill officers. and he expressed killing white people, he expressed killing white officers. he expressed anger for black lives matter. none of that made sense, none of that is a reason, a legitimate reason to do harm to anyone. >> denying previous reports that the suspect died from a self-inflicted wound. >> negotiations broke down, we had an exchange of gun fire with the suspect. we saw no other option but to

use our bomb robot, the suspect is deceased. as a result of detonating the bomb. >> reporter: what began as a peaceful protest in down town dallas erupted into chaos overnight. >> just before 9:00 p.m. terrified demonstrators running for cover, others stopping to help the injured. cell phone video capturing the barrage of gun fire. >> shots fired, officer down. it's assist officer. >> reporter: police ducking hind squad cars, one ditching his motorcycle taking cover. >> reporter: authorities calling it an ambush. at least two snipers in elevated position opening fire during the rally on officers not wearing riot gear. >> these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers

from two perches in garages in the down town area. and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could. >> reporter: a suspect cornered in a parking garage, exchanging gun fire with police. by 1:00 a.m. another suspect, a woman was taken into custody near the garage. two people seen leaving the area in a mercedes stopped. then horrifying threats from the gunman inside. >> told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us. >> reporter: by 2:25 local time the suspect was dead. brown is asking for support from the public. >> we don't feel much support. most days.

lets not make today most days. >> reporter: now, there are three suspects in custody that police are questioning. although it's unclear what if any relationship they had to any of the demonstrators here, police say they are not ruling anything out other the man did tell police while barricaded he was acting alone. here in down town dallas, many streets are still closed this morning as police continue their massive investigation. guys, back to you. >> thank you. >> we're also learning more about the victims, those officers gunned down in the line of duty last night. jacob rascon has that part of the story. >> reporter: willie, i spoke to the president of d.a.r.t. about the condition of his officers, he tells me that officer jesus retana has been relessed but omar cannon and misty mcbride being treated but expected to survive. we don't have the five officers who were killed and a police

investigation now that doesn't preclude the possibility of more suspects. this morning officials with d.a.r.t., the dallas area rapid transit confirming the death of brent thompson, the first killed since d.a.r.t. formed a police department in 1989. he joined the force in 2009, and had just gotten married two weeks ago. >> he was a great officer. served as a patrol officer, what he was doing tonight. this is very heartbreaking for us. >> reporter: three other d.a.r.t. police officers also shot are all expected to survive. the other officers shot and killed worked for the dallas police department. authorities say about 800 people were at the demonstration, reaction to the police shootings of alton sterling in baton rouge tuesday and philando castile in minnesota wednesday. we're told around 100 police officers were assigned to the dallas event, that the department strategy taking a

friendlier approach to handling the protesters wearing summer service uniforms instead of riot gear just when they need ed it most. >> seeing the courage, the professionalively, and the just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. tell you, i've never been more proud of a police officer and being part of this great noble profession. >> reporter: out on the scene of course the pain is evidence on the faces of these officers, after having not slept all night, and now worrying about the condition of those officers who are still being treated for their injuries and mourning the loss of their five colleagues and co-workers. savannah, willie. >> the police family getting even tighter this morning. thounk. from poland overnight the president paid tribute to the slain and wounded officers, and vowed to bring any one involved to justice. ron allen is traveling with

president obama, he is in warsaw. good morning to you. >> good morning. we can report a source familiar with the matter says that president obama is considering whether to cut short his trip to europe and return home because of what's happened in dallas. the president is now in poland and meeting with nato leaders. he travels to spain. the president this morning speaking in strong terms about what happened, describing the attacks as despicable, vicious, calculated. here is more of what the president had to say. >> but let's be clear. there is no possible justification for these kinds of attacks. or any violence against law enforcement. the fbi is already in touch with the dallas police and any one involved in these senseless murders will be held fully accountable. justice will be done. >> reporter: the president noted all of the facts are not clear as of yet but he also pointed out that this is a wrenching reminder of the sacrifices that police officers make every day

22-year-old olympic gold medalist ali. she's looking to add to her medal count. her experience and steady form make her mostly a favorite for second olympics as well. now, there are two last spots here. it goes pretty much to anyone's guess. keep your eyes on this young lady. she's the breakout sensation of the national championship. it was her senior level debut. she did not disappoint. not only did she place third overall, she performed with confidence and flare of a much more seasoned gymnast. hernandez will be exciting no doubt if she makes it to watch in rio. my pick though for the last spot and a lot of people say be sure to watch out for madison. she's perhaps the most well rounded if you can say that of the girls on the bubble. she can also step in on multiple

businessesn the city oakld are cleing up thismorning. good morning, it's 8:126. i'm kris sanchez. businesses in the city of oakland are cleaning up after an emotionally explosive night here and across the nation. 1,000 black lives matter demonstrators gathered at smart & final plaza and they took to the streets and then vandals targeted businesses along with the oakland police department. the crowd later moved on to interstate 880 stopping traffic in both directions. interstate 880 remained closed for several hours until well after midnight. it only reopened about 1:30 or so this morning. police have only reported one arrest in oakland. let's take a look at traffic and, mike, lucky you didn't have to report on that closure. >> very lucky. it's all open, once again.

i'm married to manny played by ray ramono. we never worked in a studio together but that's my husband and we have a child who is peaches. our daughter. so after all these films, you get used to it and you watch it build over time. it's like watching a layer cake being made slowly and then when the movie comes out you finally get to eat it. >> speaking of being a layer cake, let's talk about your career for a moment. i look at you, you got your films. tv shows. you're running your entertainment company. do you have a favorite lane or is it one of those things where you like to do it all? >> i do like to do it all. i think i've always been the type of person who likes to do many things at one time. whatever i felt capable of without stretching myself too thin. i really like a challenge and i'm bored easily. if i'm doing one thing over and over and i kind of got it down,

it no longer pushes me. i'm one of those people who needs to be pushed and has to step out of her comfort zone and feel like i'm really doing something. >> i grew up in new jersey like you did listening to your music and you always had a message in your music, as you watched what happens over the last two, three, four days with the police shootings and then the shooting of police in dallas last night, what are your thoughts? >> i mean, i'm almost at a loss for words with this situation. this goes wherever i go. so all day i'm watching what's going on with alton sterling and the situation in minnesota, i go into the theater, i'm queen latifah but black wherever i go. i deal with the same experiences

that other people deal with. i'm also the daughter of a cop. i'm also the sister of a cop. cousin of cops. and niece of cops. so do i want the guns to now be turned on cops? i don't want guns turned on police no more than i want guns turned on us. it's really time to stop playing around with this and lying to ourselves and acting like everything is cool and everyone is perfect. it's time to make an example out of someone as far as i'm concerned who is a police officer. there's no way all of these things could happen and no guilty police officers. >> what do you mean by that? >> i mean that every time these things happen, no one is really brought to justice at the end of the day. by the time it's all said and done, the police officers usually walk. and what it does is leave us feeling empty, feeling hurt, and feeli it's going to happen again. what it also does is endanger the life of police officers.

it just creates more animosity. you make all of these good cops have to walk out here dealing with bad cops bs and dealing with stuff bad cops are doing. the thing about it is, cops know that there are bad cops. you leave them -- i think they're higher up and leaving them powerless and leaving them with no place to go. nothing to do. if they want to say, hey, this dude is a bad apple, they don't leave them in a position where they can say it. you say something about it and now you're black balled. this thing is something that has to really start from the top because it's leaving police officers powerless and it's definitely leaving normal black particularly young men powerless to just travel. we shouldn't have to feel -- we're paying your salary. we shouldn't have to feel like we got to throw our hands up in the air and roll down the windows and walk a certain way. damn it, i wear a hoodie. i don't want to be fearful of my

life because i play basketball. i would have walked home in a sweatshirt and high tops sneakers. do i have to worry about that? >> it's a challenging time. >> it's terrible. we have to get real about it. if we get real about it, we can deal with it. if we want to act like it's their problem and this only happens here, it's happening to all of us. it should not have to affect all of us. we need police and we also don't need to be enemies of police. we need to really come together, face our real racial issues and deal with what's happening from a systemic point of view. >> thank you. >> it's got to change. >> coming from a family of cops. >> i don't want my father or brother getting shot because some bad cops are doing this consistently. my brother who became a cop was also the victim of cops who harassed him. it's so tricky for us. we got to deal with this. we have to deal with it. >> thank you for talking with us this morning. again, it's like you said, a tap

>> can you stick around and do the deadly ambush ofaas pocfi good morning, it's 8:56 right now. i'm kris sanchez. the deadly ambush of dallas police officers resonating this morning in many ways leaving an impact on the way things are done here in the bay area. the police department already implemented a policy change in the wake of the deadly dallas attack. all officers will now patrol in two-officer team. no officer will patrol alone. that change takes effect immediately.

♪ welcome to "today." it's friday morning, july 8th, 2016. i'm willie along with dylan. tamron and al are off. ellie kemper joins us. a shooting during peaceful planned protest over the recent

shootings in louisiana and minnesota. four officers in dallas killed were from the dpd, dallas police department. third was a dallas area rapid transit officer. his name is brent thompson. 43 years old. we learned in an interview on this show this morning that he was married two weeks ago. we learned at a press conference this morning that one suspect was killed when police sent in a robot with a bomb and detonated it. in the press conference moments ago dallas police chief talked about what happened in dallas last night. >> we're hurting. our profession is hurting. dallas officers are hurting. we are heartbroken.

there are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. all i know is that this must stop. this divisiveness between our police and our citizens. the suspect said he was upset about black lives matter. he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset at white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people especially white officers. the suspect stated he will eventually -- that we will eventually find the ieds. the suspect stated that he was not affiliated with any groups.

>> all right. that's the chief there talking about the death of four dallas police officers and another transit authority police officer in that shooting last night saying that the shooter in their back and forthwi with one man there to kill people. >> he wanted to kill police officers. and sadly they did. and that teaches us that these police officers stand between us and every day tragedy. these men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them and we have got to get to the bottom of it. more importantly, we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the united states of america. this is what happens day in and day out. >> president obama is abroad right now in warsaw, poland, for a nato summit. a short time ago he described the attack as vicious,

calculated and despicable. >> as i told mayor rawlings, i believe that i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and that we stand united with the people and the police department in dallas. according to police, there are multiple suspects. we will learn more undoubtedly about their twisted motivations but let's be clear. there's no possible justification for these kinds of attacks. or any violence against law enforcement. >> that's the second time in just a few hours that president obama addressed the country from overseas in poland. he first talked about shootings in minnesota and baton rouge, louisiana, and then a few hours later after this dallas incident and death of five officers, he spoke again. this is the biggest loss of life of police officers in a single event since the attacks of september 11th in this country.

let's go to gabe gutierrez standing by with the latest. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we just heard from officials here and the police chief gave the most detailed account thus far of what the suspect said to police while he was barricaded inside that parking garage this morning. specifically he said he wanted not just to kill police officers but white police officers and the suspect said that he was upset about the recent police shootings across the country. of course over the past few days, we've seen those protests in louisiana, in minnesota. there's been a lot of anger throughout the country but up until now those protests had been peaceful for the most part. a few arrests in a few parts of the country. but this suspect again said that he wanted to kill white police officers. the suspect told police that he was acting alone. he also said according to the police chief, that he was upset with the black lives matter movement. there is conflicting information.

the suspect said he was acting alone but police do have three suspects in this is an "nbc news special report." here's lester holt. downtown behind us, still shut off of the investigation. the other half of your screen, the podium, in a moment, attorney general lynch will make a statement and remarks about what's happened here and what will happen going forward. gabe gutierrez is with us. he's covering the story and was there for the news conference today. what do we know about the suspect that was killed? >> as you mentioned, the fbi is here investigating this.

senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news that the suspect is believed to be identified as micah xavier johnson. 25 years old from the dallas area. we're still working to find out more information about him, but earlier today, the police chief said that in his conversation with negotiators early this morning, at that parking garage where he was barricaded. he said he did this because he wanted to kill police officers, specifically that he wanted to kill white police officers. he also said that he acted alone and that he was upset with the black lives matter movement. there is some question about whether he may have had any help and authorities have detained three other people. they say they are not ruling anything out at this point. they are investigating whether other people may have helped him in this but again the gunman said that he acted alone when he talk to police. >> early reports that there were shots coming from various locations. that's in question. >> earlier today, you've covered many of these situations before.

it's a very fluid situation. earlier today the police had said that at least two snipers were firing on police officers from a higher level and so right now, they are looking at all -- all possible factors, if there was more than one gunman, at the news conference earlier today they would not comment on any specifics. >> we know the 12 police officers were shot. five of them were killed. there are a number of injured as well. any updates on the conditions? >> that's right. two civilians were injured. police officials had said earlier today, they said most of those injured, most of the officers and civilians that were injured, they have been treated and released from the hospital, but we haven't gotten any more information on their conditions. >> we've seen people who were marching in that peaceful protest last night, many trying to retrieve their vehicles and whatever they left behind. >> certainly. this city is devastated.

this is from far from dealey plaza, this city is dealing with an unfolding national tragedy. i spoke with the rally organizers. he said he was in shock. he was caught up in the gunfire himself. he says at least two officers in front of him dropped to the ground. he believed they were hit by that fun fire. he managed -- gunfire. he manage to make it out. he was separated from his wife for more than three hours he says. >> we're waiting for attorney general lynch for her public remarks. we don't know if she's going to make any announcements in terms of a federal component of this investigation. this protest, this peaceful march was an outgrowth of one of the stories you were covering in baton rouge. the shooting of a man who was pinned down by police and of course what we saw in st. paul,

that facebook video of a man taking his last breaths in his car. >> certainly. emotions running high throughout this week. noticeably, despite protests across these cities and other areas across the country, they remain largely peaceful. they were saying this rally was going along fine. that police officers were taking pictures, selfies with some of the demonstrators. it was an atmosphere that they liked. that they felt they were getting their message across. there is a lot of anger here but again there was a lot of anger here, but the rally was peaceful at that point and we should mention in terms of the investigation, federal or law enforcement sources tell nbc news that they have at this point ruled out any link to international islamic extremism, but what investigators are focusing on right now, according to several law enforcement sources, is whether these -- the shooter or shooters in this case

may have had any ties to a domestic -- any sort of domestic extremist group and that's what they are looking at right now, lester. >> we understand, police here and other major cities now are pairing up, two officers per car you no. no more solo patrols now. so obviously there's a heightened tension not only here but the climate and the unknowns that this will -- >> certainly. that will be the big question. where do we go from here and as the rally organizer, what happens for rallies going forward? will this spark more tension between those that want their voices heard, those who are demonstrators and the law enforcement community. but the local officials say they want their thoughts, prayers, to the families of these law enforcement officers, swearing to protect the public. >> all right. let's go to attorney general lynch. good afternoon, everyone. thank you for being here today. last night, at least five police

officers were shot and killed. several more were injured. along with two civilians. our thoughts and prayers and condolences go out to the families who lost loved ones. the department of justice, including the fbi, atf, the u.s. marshall service and the u.s. attorneys office on the scene is working closely with our state and local counterparts and intend to provide any assistance we can to investigate this attack and also to help heal a community that has been severely shaken and deeply scarred by tragedy. it is an unfolding situation. we will be providing additional information when it is available and appropriate. more so, this has been a week of profound grief and heart-breaking loss. the peaceful protest that was planned in dallas last night was organized in response to the tragic deaths of alton sterling

in louisiana and philando castile in minnesota. we're providing assistance to authorities in minnesota who are leading the investigation today. we're providing services for officer brent thompson and four other officers. after the events of this week, americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, of uncertainty, and of fear, and these feelings are understandable and they are justified. but the answer must not be violence. the answer is never violence. rather, the answer, our answer, all our answer must be action. calm, peaceful, collaborative and determined action. we must continue working to build trust between communities and law enforcement. we must continue working to

guarantee every person in this country equal justice under the law, and we must take a hard look at the ease with which wrong doers can get their hands on deadly weapons and the frequency with which they use them and we must reflect on the kind of country that we want to build and the kind of society that we are choosing to pass on to our children. and above all we must reject the easy impulses of bitterness and ran corps and brace the difficult work, the vital work of finding a path forward together and above everything, we must remind ourselves that we're all americans and as americans we share not just a common land, but a common life. not just common goals but a common heart and soul. and those we've lost this week have come from different backgrounds, different neighborhoods, but today they are mourned by officers, by

residents, by family and friends, by men and women and children who loved them, who needed them and who will miss them always. they are mourned by all of us. to the families of all who have lost their lives in this series of tragedies, we share your pain and your loss. to our brothers and sisters who wear the badge, i want you to know that i am deeply grateful for the difficult and dangerous work that you do every day to keep our streets safe and our nation secure. our hearts are broken by this loss and the department of justice will do all that we can to support you in the days ahead and to those who seek to improve our country through peaceful protest and protected speech, i want you to know that your voice is important. do not be discouraged by those who use your lawful actions as a cover for their heinous violence. we will continue to safeguard your constitutional rights and to work with you in the difficult mission of building a

taking a look at the headlines, the city of dallas is mourning the shooting death of five police officers after an ambush style attack last night. seven other officers were wounded as well as two civilians. dallas police chief david brown says one suspect was cornered, then eventually killed with a bomb after negotiations broke down. he's been identified as micah johnson. according to brown the suspect said he was upset by recent police shootings and wanted to kill officers. he also said he was not affiliated with any groups. today the group that hit wendy's is more than thought. wendy's says hackers were able to access card numbers, names, expiration dates and security codes. some cards were used to make
