yesterday. it starts out at 54 degrees in the peninsula, and in the north bay, 60 degrees in the east bay. highs today reaching into the upper 60s in san francisco, upper 80s for the south bay, north bay, and tri-valley, and 70s in the east bay and peninsula. i'll let you know what to expect coming up. . mike said the rails might be slower than the roads. >> yeah. for some folks and the roads will be distracted by the smoke. just off 101 we see smoke from the san jose fire. we don't see sensors for that area nor over here toward the east bay. the issue is over here. the oakland camera on the b.a.r.t. station. there is a train at the oakland station but major delays reported coming through oakland. and the train has been there for three or four minutes. they may beholding. i'll check on the b.a.r.t. system if there's some sort of equipment problem around the downtown oakland station. give it a couple of seconds.

i'll track it and let you know more details from b.a.r.t. and you have the fire in san jose. >> thank you very much, mike. again, that's breaking news out of san jose. a fire at a recycling plant near downtown san jose. you see lots of white smoke coming off that. what we're hearing on the ground now is that it may be a debris pile that is on fire and not the recycling matter itself. a recycling plant. there's always concern there could be something that is very flammable and perhaps toxic in that area. right now it appears it is still a one-alarm fire happening in the 1600 block of south seventh street. if you live in san jose, you're probably familiar with the area over by municipal stadium. there's also happy hollow park and zoo in the area as well. our sharon is on the scene. we asked her to get details. she's going to bring us another live report in 15 to 20 minutes. in the meantime we're following developing news out of

the east bay where two swimmers remain missing this morning after hours of searching last night. they disappeared in the waters at shadows cliff recreation area. >> "today in the bay" bob redell is live this morning. and rescuers are working now. when will they be back at it, bob? >> reporter: well, they called off their search last night at around 1:00 in the morning. the east bay regional parks police department say they have a dive team back out here in about two hours at around 7:00 this morning to resume their search here at the shadows cliff area for the two missing swimmers. the agency tells us, however, it's no longer a rescue operation, rather an active recovery. in other words, the thought is that those two swimmers have drowned. it's just a matter of finding their bodies. it's not clear how the swimmers got into distress. if you're not familiar, shadows

cliffs used to be a gravel cor . corp. -- quarry. life guards are on duty during the summer months but we have yet to confirm the case when the two swimmers disappeared yesterday. reporting live here in pleasantton. "today in the bay." >> very intense protests in baton rouge, louisiana yesterday where dozens of people were arrested after a confrontation with police. of course, the protests all in response to several violent events over the past week. that community there is still embroiled by what happened. deadly police shootings that happened in baton rouge, also, near minneapolis, minnesota. the massacre of five police officers in dallas has continued to stoke the national fire over the issue as well. that's one of several cities arnltd the country right now where protesters last night expressed their anger at law enforcement officers. sunday night was filled with gatherings from atlanta to los

angeles. most were peaceful. in atlanta people held sit ins and blocked the roadways. many people gathered on the streets of chicago as well, where you can see there was a heavy police presence. meanwhile protesters at a black lives matter rally in los angeles spill on to the streets and blocked traffic at some major intersections there. president obama will be in dallas tomorrow to attend a memorial service honoring the fallen officers. the president arrived a the white house yesterday evening after cutting short i hhis trip spain. the president will speak at the memorial service in dallas tomorrow. he'll also be meeting privately with the families of the fallen and injured officers. a tragic accident in the north bay that left a toddler dead. the toddler was in a stroller when he was hit by a car. the mom was pushing the stroller across the street. the 3-year-old boy was flung from the stroller as his mom

tried to jump out of the way of the oncoming car. tragically the boy was hit by the car. he was air lifted to a local hospital but later died. the crash happened in a community on the outskirts of is a knis a know ma. the driver is cooperating and not facing any charges. friends and family of a kidnapped woman are holding out hope she'll be held safe. police say they are not sure whether 57-year-old el vie are a baab is alive or dead. she was last seen at seafood city market by a coworker who dropped her off after work on june 29th. on july 1st, her son told police she was skid kidnapped and being held for randsome. investigators made for arrests in the case and police say one of the is ups you're seeing on the screen lived in the same building as the victim several years ago. a follow up now on an historic church badly damaged in the earthquake in napa two years

ago is quite an nice story today. >> the church has been around for a long time. first presbyterian church opened the doors for the first service since the 2014 quake. chris mentioned the historic nature of the church. the downtown church was built 142 years ago. the earthquake brought down a lot of plaster and glass. much has been repaired and improved, but the work is not over yet. restoration is expected to continue for the next few months. one of the bay area's leading homeless charities celebrated a major milestone. >> saint anthony's dining room has been serving meals to the homeless in the tenderloin since 1950. they never turn anyone away. they do it every day. the dining room is about to serve the 42nd millionth meal. saint anthonys averages about a million meals each and every year. most of the food is donated. all right. big news on the olympics front

it's feel-good time on this monday. nice temperatures in store. >> it's going to be nice and comfortable to start. but warming up as we go through the rest of the day. as you head out the door, it's 54 in palo alto and 52 in napa. and highs today reaching into the 60s in san francisco. mid 80s for santa rosa and there will be a couple of spots hitting 90s degrees but more wide spread 70s and 80s across the bay area. i'll let you know what to expect as we go through the week and continue it see more temperatures like this but going up a couple of degrees each day. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. mike has an update on the b.a.r.t. train in oakland. >> it's not a good thing. the northbound train has been holding for over 15 minutes. we are hearing about major delays 20 minutes or more. that's the case for the one train going through downtown oakland. we're hearing system-wide delays due to mechanical difficulties. we have calls into b.a.r.t. b.a.r.t. police are not covering anything going on for the train. we know that. the map shows the rest of the

upper 50s for another hour or so. you sew the temperatures quickly rising through the morning. it's a great day to take the lunch outside. we see the sun continuing for the rest of the day in the peninsula. a look at all the microclimates all sunshine up to 80 degrees. half-moon bay 64 degrees. and also 86 degrees in santa rosa and pittsburgh, oakland 74, and pleasantton up to 78 degrees. we'll have temperatures going up a couple of degrees over the next couple of days as high pressure builds and temperatures in the valley to go into 80s and 90. by this weekend dropping a couple of degrees. the area of low pressure continues to move in from the north and increases sea breeze. overall temperatures once again going up as we go through the weekend. here is a look what the try valley can expect. the average high 87 degrees. by the end of the week, heading toward thursday which will be

the warmest day of the week up to 92 degrees. looking ahead to the weekend, it will be another a nice one but slightly cooler in spots like along the coastline with highs in the upper 60s. let's head to mike now still tracking the b.a.r.t. delays through oakland. >> that's right. s on the b.a.r.t. they're having major delays from downtown oakland. the better news there's still a b.a.r.t. train behind me. but in the last seven minutes i saw one train leave and another train arrive. again, it's the oakland coliseum station. northbound trains were held up. the first one about 15 minutes. we'll see how long the second one takes. we have that much delay. on the roads moving through oakland and toward the bay bridge just fine. the bay bridge toll plaza is starting cash back ups. that's the only issue if the bay. the rest of the bay moves well. a crash san jose south 101 at story. normally i turn the camera there facing the direction. we don't see any slowing here. i turned the camera off the

recovering after he collapsed during a concert in new york. perry is known as the guitarist for aerosmith, primarily. last night he was playing with his side project the hollywood vampires. people in the audience say he was on stage for a few minutes before he sat down front of the drum kit. he walked off the stage and collapsed. he was reportedly taken from a nearby hospital in coney island where he's in condition this morning. one of the band members told the audience that perry was very sick before the show. we talk all the time about smartphones and smart cars. how about smart highways? cal train is looking to turn one of the bay area's most jammed freeways into just that. here is a live look now at interstate 80 near the border of emoriville and berkeley. part of the stretch being turned into a smart highway. the project is due to be unveiled over the next few days. the feature includes advanced metering lights, that should keep mike busy, lane closure

warnings, and speed limit signs that can be changed based on the conditions. this is between the car tee nez bridge and the bay bridge. the goal, of course, to cut down on crashes to ease the congestion. madison bumgarner is heading to his fourth all-star game this week in san diego. but, he's not going to pitch. >> because he was busy yesterday and no what, an effort well spent. he was dazzling on the mound yesterday. bumgarner had a no-hitter going against the diamondbacks until the eighth inning when jake lanza decided to spoil things with a single. he still went on to toss the complete game one-hit shut out to lead the giants to a 4-0 win. >> you know when you get through seven and yo go there and six more outs to get, you feel like you got a pretty good chance given wait the game has been going. and it hasn't worked out for me.

let's head to mike now. he has change for the road and the rails. >> that's right. the roads the bay bridge meters lights turned on. we have the toll plaza almost full. more traffic volume than last week. looking a the maps talking about the rails. b.a.r.t. trains are running. i saw a few trains arrive and leave. in the south bay crash cleared from the roadway without any slowing. no problem northbound. so we'll track that silicon valley commute. back to you. >> thank you, mike. we're following the breaking news out of the south bay where fire crews are battling a blaze at a recycling plant in downtown san jose. here is sharon kapsuda. what are fire officials telling you this morning? >> reporter: when we got here at about 4:30 we saw flames shooting up in the air. fortunately they put it out very quickly. they say this kind of fire happens often at recycling plants. this was a small fire, they say,

they contained it quickly because the pile was surrounded by concrete. fire captains said it happens at recycling plants because trucks move around in the big piles and that's how it probably started. he is not sure just yet. they're still determining the exact cause. a worker in this area said these types of fire happen about once a month. the captain himself said he has responded to these fires about five times in his career. so he says it's pretty common to see this type of fire in recycling plants, but fortunately, in this case, no one was injured and they were able to contain it quickly. back here live you can see behind me they have a ladder up, hoses still spraying down on the fire but pretty much it's contained and very little smoke at this time. reporting live in san jose. today bay. >> good news. we're following developing news out of the east bay. rescue crews will be back out on

the water looking for two swimmers who disappeared at dough cliffs recreational area as they were out for a swim. the search was suspended around 1:00 in the morning after crews spent hours looking for the swimmers and came up empty. it's unclear how the swimmers got into trouble. our bob redell is live at the scene and will have a report in about an hour. a tragic accident in the north bay that left toddler dead. the toddler was in a stroller when he was hit by a car. >> the mother was pushing that stroller across the street yesterday evening. police say a 3-year-old boy was flown from the stroller as his mom tried to jump out of the way of the oncoming car. tragically the boy was hit by the car. he was air lifted to the hospital but later died there. the crash happened in the community on the outskirts of sonoma. the driver cooperated with the police and not facing any charges. it was supposed to be a fun

community leaders gathered at a church yesterday to end the cycle of bloodshed. in dallas, an african-american mom shot in the leg that night praised the efforts of officers who protected her. >> that officer jumped on top of me and covered me and my sons. there was another one at our feet and there was one over our head. several of them lined against the wall over there and they just stayed there with us. >> authorities have released unsettling new details about the gunman. investigators say he left behind a cryptic message written in his own blood on a wall where he eventually died. he wrote the initials "rb." investigators don't yet know what it means. happening today a blue ribbon panel group reviewing san

francisco police department policies will issue its final report. that panel looked into the department's practice in the wake of a scandal involving bigoted text messages send by a group of officers. panel judges issued their preliminary findings in may and found the sfpd lacking in transparency and accountability. it also found disproportionate numbers of police stops and searches involving black and latino people. two men who investigators say failed to put out a campfire are now facing criminal charges in connection with an out of control wild fire in colorado. the consult springs wild fire destroyed three homes and burned more than 600 acres. it's still burning 20 miles west of boulder. no reports of injuries but 2,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes. two men are facing arson charges. a follow up on a historic church badly damaged by the earthquake in napa two years ago.

the mid to upper 60s today. the marina district 65 at lunchtime and 67 in the mission district with mid to upper 60s today. mostly sunny skies. it looks like it does stay clear. as we get a look at the microclimate today san jose up to 82. and the financial district at 66. fairfield up to 90 today oakland at 74 and 77 degrees today in dan and liver hoar. high pressure continues to build and that causes our valley temperatures to rise into the 80s and 90s by the middle of the week. we will see that for several days an area of low pressure drops in for the north. that increases our sea breeze to make it a little bit cooler in spots in time for saturday and sunday. but looking at the trend for the south bay this week, we will be above average all week lock. we should be at 84 degrees. we're hitting 90 and 91 degrees by thursday. and even friday looks very warm

the convention starts on july 18th in cleveland, this is just the precursor meeting in setting up the platform. on the democratic side a major couple buy ya expected to come tomorrow. word is bernie sanders is going to finally endorse hillary clinton. the two are scheduled to appear together at an event in help. various news outlets reports that's where the endorsement will happen. it follows a meeting by the democratic meeting in orlando where the group adopted some of the vermont senator's key positions. the convention starts two weeks from today in philadelphia. it is a neck-and-neck vote forcing a recount in san jose. it starts in the city council 4 elections. only 36 votes separated the candidates. in a surprise outcome the incumbent is losing to the opponent who lost last year's election for the north valley seat.

rock legend joe perrys is recovering this morning after he collapsed during a concert in new york. perry is best known as the guitarist for aerosmith. last night he was playing with his second band, the hollywood vampi vampires. people in the audience say he was on stage for a few minutes before he sat down front of the drum set. he walked off the stage and collapsed. he was reportedly taken from a nearby hospital in coney island where he's in condition this morning. one of the band members told the audience that perry was very sick before the show. using coupons to say lives. using an old-fashioned coupon system. howard broadman helped to come up with the idea. his grandson was born with a kidney that doesn't work well and needs a transplant or will someday. broadman wants to be the donor but because he's 66 he needed to donate the organ now. >> it doesn't make any sense.
