presidential race as well. bernie sanders joining one-time rival hillary clinton on the campaign trail for the first time. and this morning, speculation is heating up over both clinton and donald trump's potential running mates. we have it all covered. let's start with nbc's andrea mitchell. andrea, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. a month after she wrapped up the nomination, hillary clinton is finally getting bernie sanders' endorsement today, here in new hampshire. a battleground state where he trounced her in the primary. at last for team clinton, the civil war with bernie sanders, the last democratic holdout is over. weeks after his embattled progressive senator elizabeth warren embraced clinton. >> i'm here today because i'm with her. yes, her! >> reporter: sanders even waiting until after president obama joined clinton on the stump. >> hillary! hillary! >> reporter: sanders and clinton not exactly a match made in heaven. >> wait a minute. i have stood on the debate stage

with senator sanders -- >> excuse me. will secretary -- senator? >> reporter: now clinton, echoing sanders' economic themes about the rich. >> they are doing better than ever. corporate profits are up. whereas so many americans are stalled or have fallen backwards. >> reporter: making concessions on the party platform, agreeing to a $15 an hour minimum wage, free college public tuition but pegged to family income, a public option added to obamacare. but will sanders followers be enthusiastic about a democrat many vowed they'd never support. >> the more hillary clinton keeps the volume high on big, bold progressive ideas, the more enthusiastic bernie sanders supporters will be going into november. >> reporter: will sanders fire up young people for clinton after promising them a revolution. >> it is about creating a political revolution. >> reporter: with the party united, clinton can focus on choosing a running mate. a safe choice like senator tim kaine. >> democrats are coming together around our candidate and to win

in cleveland just six days away. down to the final four, speculation swirling about donald trump's vp pick. but newly revealed audio from 2008 shows back then he thought his current rival would make a decent running mate. "the wall street journal" reporting these comments about hillary clinton. >> well, i know her and she'd make a good president or a good vice president. >> reporter: a very different tone from trump now. >> crooked hillary clinton. >> reporter: as he looks for a vice president to play attack dog. indiana governor mike pence trying out for the role tonight when he appears with trump at a rally outside indianapolis. >> the very idea that we would be considered along with a number of other distinguished americans for that position is very humbling. >> reporter: another contender, newt gingrich, tells nbc news the vp announcement could come in 48 hours. but even if offered a slot, gingrich says he's not an automatic yes.

7:11 am
for hillary clinton? >> i do. i think we focus on the names and play this guessing game, but i think the central decision is which way does he go? does he try to solve his one political problem which is that people like jeb bush don't think he's a real conservative? or does he try to underscore the brand that won him the nomination which is that he's an unpredictable wild card who's going to shake up washington. there are two very different paths. >> mark, i think that question was set up absolutely perfectly. assuming that a vp pick addresses some perceived deficit in the candidate, in your mind, what is the vulnerability that trump most badly needs to address with his vp pick? >> well, trump's biggest vulnerability goes to the main reason anyone should pick their running mate which is someone who's perceived right away as someone who's qualified to be president. i think donald trump the biggest problem he has with a lot of voters is, is he serious? will he govern in a serious way if he's elected? that's what you've got to do. al gore, dick cheney, joe biden, all of them when they were picked faced criticism but not
7:12 am
one critic said that guy's not ready. i think that's what i think that's what trump should do. that's what i think he will do. pick someone who people see as ready to be president. >> let's make you go out on a limb a little bit more. pence are gingrich, christie, flynn, those are the names we're hearing more than any others. go with what mike just talked about. who's ready? >> pence is a governor. republicans love their governors. he's viewed -- i think we put him in the safe category. that's the safe choice. christie's probably the one that in his gut he most wants to pick. he's been the closest thing to a partner that he's had as a candidate but he has some baggage with bridgegate. i'd put gingrich and flynn behind those two. >> mark i want to ask you about the sanders endorsement. i'll give you a chance for a one-name answer, someone you think is at the top of trump's list right now? >> let me check my devices, make sure no last-minute information. okay. i think mike pence is. i think if trump goes with his gut and his feelings he'll pick christie. if he goes with his head, unless
7:13 am
there's a surprise pick, and i still think it's possible the showman has a surprise in his back pocket, i think it's pence. >> let the record reflect that was several more than one word. let me ask you about hillary clinton and bernie sanders today. hillary clinton took four days to endorse barack obama in 2008. it's been more than 30 days and sanders is finally coming around. can he convincingly endorse her and make that sales pitch for her today, mark? >> i think if sanders is warm and fuzzy today he'll pull it off. and he's not going to be, right? his personality is not one that normally shows a lot of embrace. but look, his supporters are serious and there's policy differences still between sanders and clinton. much more than obama and clinton. so a lot of his supporters will be disappointed. but today will go a long way towards bringing many of his people into the tent. and clinton needs them. >> nicolle, is bernie sanders going to be warm and fuzzy today? >> no way. >> she stuck to several words. >> mark, thank you.

nicolle, thank you as well. a michigan courthouse will be closed today in the wake of a deadly shooting. an inmate being moved from a holding cell managed to wrestle a gun away from a sheriff's deputy, opened fire killing two bailiffs and injuring at least two others. here's nbc's ron mott with the story. >> officer down! officer down! >> reporter: this morning the berrien county courthouse is the newest addition to america's mass shooting catalog. monday, a chaotic kren caught on cell phone video from the parking lot outside. >> we figured out there was an active shooter. >> reporter: when it was over, an inmate had shot and killed two bailiffs, joseph zangaro, 61, and ron kienzle, 63, both retired cops. >> our hearts are torn apart. they were our friends. they were my colleagues. i have known them for over 30 years. >> reporter: officials say the shooter, 45-year-old larry darnell gordon, was in custody and being escorted from a holding cell to a court appearance when he fought with a sheriff's deputy, grabbed his gun and opened fire. they say he also tried to take

connecticut. it began a four decade saga that resulted in the conviction of a neighbor, michael skakel, 15 at the time of the murder, convicted at the age of 41. the case brings the inner section of wealth, privilege and one of america's most famous families. michael skakel is a kennedy cousin. his conviction has now been set aside because a judge ruled he didn't get an adequate defense. now prosecutors trying to have that conviction reinstated. but his cousin, robert kennedy jr., is out with an explosive new book today called "framed," why michael skakel spent over a decade in prison for a murder he didn't commit. in the book, kennedy, a former prosecutor, lays out the case why his cousin couldn't have killed martha moxley that night. kennedy says i shouldn't take his word for it, i should look at the facts. >> what i believe is completely irrelevant. you know, people should not trust what i believe. i have a relationship with michael.
7:44 am
i strongly believe that he's innocent. that belief should not persuade anybody that he is innocent. what people should be persuaded by is the facts and that's been one of the pitfalls of this epic story from the beginning. this story, particularly for journalists, was "too good to fact check." >> skakel was convicted in part based on evidence that over the years his story changed and statements he made to classmates and acquaintances at a reform school. kennedy says there are new witnesses who say the confessions never happened. according to robert kennedy jr., the facts show that michael skakel has an air-tight alibi. >> one the most powerful pieces of evidence is that he could not have done it because he was 11 miles away with five eyewitnesses, plus there was another eight witnesses at the house where the murder took place who never saw him the entire evening after they saw him leave. >> over the years, what's been said is he has an alibi that's been sworn to by his friends and

for his conviction. >> well, i don't feel responsible, personally responsible for it -- >> the kennedy family. >> right. i think that michael skakel would not be in jail if people had not been able to call him kennedy cousin. >> in "framed," kennedy goes so far as to lay the blame of martha moxley's murder at the feet of two men who have never been suspects at all. explain who they were. >> they were two city kids, one caucasian and one african-american, who were brought that night -- who went to greenwich that night. >> these two men were introduced to the rarefied air of greenwich's bell haven neighborhood by the cousin of kobe bryant and a former classmate of the skakels shown here being interviewed by michael's defense team. >> well, their words were that we're going to go caveman on her. and that meant that, according to bryant, that meant hitting her over the head, dragging l g into the bushes and sexually assaulting her.
7:47 am
>> did anyone see these two on that night, october 30, 1975, in the bell haven section of greenwich? >> only tony bryant saw them that night. >> there's never been any evidence introduced to tie the men to the murder and judges have rejected bryant's claims before. while one of the men kennedy points the finger at didn't respond to our requests for comment, in the past both men have denied any involvement in moxley's murder. the lawyer for one man says his client is innocent. >> everything i know from everything i've read, from everything i've heard, from everything i've investigated, and from everything i know, al hasbrook had absolutely nothing to do with this case. period, full stop. >> despite this, kennedy doesn't fear any legal consequences for himself. >> so having just said what you said, do you expect them to sue you now that this book is out? >> if they're innocent, they should sue me. >> you'd like to see that? >> i'd like to see that. i would love to depose them.
