"today in the bay" starts right now. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. a gentle start here. kari hall has a look at your weather. are we looking at triple digits? >> sammy, i'm going to take it over here first because we have a weather-related possible issue. let's look at the map. sorry, sam. we did get word of an early morning fire. i'm going to show you the roadways because traffic is my gig but this is a good deal off

the freeways. folks are getting a visibility from 680 over here, it's way up in the east foothills. i put it at over five miles away from the freeway. it is well over five miles. up in the hills right here, no homes are threatened but there's a good deal of fire in these hills. kris sanchez is there to find out more from the firefighters. 're worried about the residents and the roadways but it's well off in the distance. because it's so early folks are reporting seeing it from 680, 101 and over towards santa clara. hot weather expected, kari, today, so we do have a fire danger i would imagine. >> i can see the smoke from where i live this morning. that may be something way in the distance that you will see but should not affect you as you go into this morning and early afternoon as they try to get that under control. wind forecast, we have some very light winds coming in from the northwest at about two, three miles an hour. mostly calm winds to start off the day. picks up to ten miles an hour as we go into the rest of the

afternoon. but the heat will be another issue. it will be even hotter than it was yesterday, reaching into the 90s and triple digits for all of the inland valleys and the hills. so i'll talk more about that and a look ahead to the forecast coming up. now back to you, sam and laura. >> thanks so much, kari. another person is in jail this morn in connection with a shooting death in hayward. >> a man was behind the wheel of his car waiting to make a turn at an intersection of blossom way. police say the shooter jumped out of a car, fired at the victim and took off running. the suspect was found later and arrested. late last night police found and arrested the driver of the car the shooter was in. now, investigators are working on a motive. >> whether this is just random gang or gun violence, we don't know, or whether this was specifically targeted, we don't know. >> the identities of the victim and the suspect, neither one has been released. to a developing story this

morning, hundreds of guns stolen from the sacramento area may be in the bay area. honda cr-v went into a shop yesterday. they stole an ak-47. the same car was used in another gun storeburg clarry that morning where 15 weapons were taken. the pro brazen burglaries led investigators to a home in east oakland where several people were arrested. more than 240 guns have been stolen from gun shops in the sacramento area recently. new details offen the breaking news we were just talking to you about yesterday morning. a fire that gutted a livermore warehouse is now being called suspicious. miller's air conditioning and heating caught fire about midnight. the companies on research drive off of south vasco road. the time and origin of the fire makes it suspicious. no one was injured in that fire. a new charges for the san jose man accused of stealing, torturing and killing cats.

farmer was in court yesterday. prosecutors added 11 felony counts to the ten charges that farmer was already facing. those new charges stem from missing cats. dna from the cats was allegedly found in farmer's car and clothing. investigators say this video shows farmer trying to steal a cat. if he's convicted on all counts he could spend up to 16 years behind bars. a bay area congresswoman is trying to make revenge porn illegal across the country. back fwround for you. revenge porn is when someone posts nude pictures or videos of other people such as their exes on the internet. today congresswoman jackie speier will introduce legislation on capitol hill. there are 26 states including california that already have laws against revenge porn on the books. operator of a revenge porn website was sentenced to eight years in prison in san diego last year. now to a fiery crash in vallejo last night involving

five cars on highway 37 around 6:30. all westbound lanes were shut down for hours. a woman and child were hurt forcing emergency crews to airlift the child to the hospital. we're told that child has major injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. all that snow that we got during the el nino fueled winter months melted faster than ever before. now, that's just not the case here it's the case for the entire northern hemisphere. that information according to climate experts. the snow meltoff happened in the first six months of 12016. scientists say that human-cause global warming is to blame. they had a lack of snow, less drinking water, hotter, for california that could also mean more wildfires. it is a "spare the air" day as well, kari. >> yeah. tnd ozone levels will be the most unhealthy in parts of the east bay and south bay. we'll talk about that and the

and killed by a police officer will also be laid to rest today. >> philando castile was shot last week during a traffic stop. you may recall that his girlfriend live streamed the aftermath of the shooting. and that led to outrage and protests and, yes, violence. her 4-year-old daughter was in the backseat at the time. 32-year-old castile served lunch at a school for many years. students called him just mr. phil. today service will be held in st. paul, minnesota. in the meantime, president obama hosted a conversation on community policing in washington, d.c. yesterday. president talked about improvements made within law enforcement due to recommendations made by his task force on policing. what the president said there is still more work to be done, especially in building trust and respect between the police and minority communities. the three-hour meeting included community activists, politicians, and law enforcement officials. in the meantime, just released footage of another deadly police shooting in fresno is going viral.

police say this body camera video was taken last month. the chief says even though it's gruesome he wants the public to see why his officers had no choice but to open fire on an unarmed teenager. he claims the video shows the 19-year-old ignoring commands to show both of his hands repeated commands. dozens of protesters gathered outside of police headquarters yesterday demanding justice. the teenager's family is now suing the city. coming up, we are just getting video of that grass fire in san jose. we're doing to bring you more information on how aggressive it's been. this is a live look from our cameras in fremont. kari hall is going to join was a look at that thursday forecast and what is in the works, a possible cooldown for the weekend. plus, steph curry showing some moves at the espy awards last night. we have the highlights include that velvet jacket, next.

breaking news that we're following this morning. a fire in the foothills of east san jose this morning. want to check in with mike as well. he's got a look at the affect of traffic. >> that's right. this is the first look of this video. you can see the flames. these are the east foothills over in san jose. you see the twinkling lights in the city in the distance. the hills you can see though from the freeway. all this flame, the fire going on, not currently an issue as far as the homes and especially not for the major roadways as far as the blockage goes.

they can see this fire for quite some distance. twinkling city lights. these are the east foothills. firefighters are out. kris san chess chez is arriving well. let's get you out to the roadways and show you the effect. this is silicon valley. up here in the east foothills and here's downtown san jose. this is a good five miles off the roadway. the distance that allows the roadways to be face but it is visible from 680 obviously, 101, 280. we even hear reports coming in from santa clara that some folks with see it. as i clear the screen we show you the rest of your commute. clear because it's so early. watching the fire. the dry hillsides are a concern. kari, talking about the dry hill sides as well as the hotter weather today. what do you have in store for us weatherwise? >> we are looking at the best conditions this morn for cool temperatures and not as much wind to get that fire under control. right now it is 57 degrees in

the peninsula as well as san francisco and mostly clear skies. highs today reaching into the mid 90s in south bay. 87 degrees in the east bay and 75 in san francisco with also some mid 90s for the north bay. there will be some spots hitting 100 degrees. as we break it down for san jose. going through the morning, 7:00 at 62. 78 degrees by 11:00. and by 1:00, we're up to the mid 80s. upper 80s today, even pushing low 90s to 93 today in saratoga. san mateo, 81 degrees. financial district at 75. 94 in santa rosa. while fairfield hits 101. 99 in antioch, 101 degrees also in dublin today. we have this high pressure that's really causing some hot weather. but then we'll start to see these temperatures coming down as we go into the weekend. so today still hitting the upper 90s and near 100 degrees. the coastal areas will be nice and cool. and then this weekend we see this heat backing down just a

little bit. looking at the tri-valley into the next five days. we go from 97 degrees tomorrow to 87 degrees on saturday. this weekend trending below average with just 88 degrees. so it is looking better there. a look at the weekend forecast. what we can all expect as we go from 90 degrees in the north bay. we'll be at 84 degrees by sunday and san francisco will be dropping back into the mid 60s while in the south bay we go from 95 to 84 on sunday. so the last part of the weekend will be the best and most comfortable. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up a little bit later. sam and laura? >> all right. the cooldown returns. will it return when it comes to politics though? >> heat up on the campaign trail, laura. lots of curiosity about donald trump and who he is going to introduce as his running mate tomorrow morning. >> sources tell nbc donald trump has not yet decided between new jersey governor chris christie, former house speaker newt gingrich, and indiana governor

mike pence. pence could draw critical swing state voters. >> republicans are going to dump it at the convention. much harder to do so when it shows he's very competitive in the battleground state polls. >> today clinton will appear with one of her own top vp candidates tim kaine, agriculture secretary tom vilsack and tom perez also believed to round out her top three vp picks. we do to more information on new poll numbers. hillary clinton is facing trouble in two critical battleground states. new nbc news/"wall street journal" marist poll shows that clinton and trump are tied in iowa and dead heat in iowa. mrs. clinton was in illinois calling for a unity. cleveland, ohio, is changing the bathroom policy just days before the gop kicks off their convention. transgender people with now use the public bathroom that

corresponds with their gender identity. city leaders say the measures respects the right to all sides. cleveland's law comes as several cities and states enacting laws that civil right groups say are anti-transgender. utah lawmakers may have an answer to the problem of drones getting in the way during raging wildfires. firefighters say that drones over fires may have cost the state millions of dollars. that is because they forced air tankers to be grounded at critical points trying to address the fire. lawmakers have fastraked a law allowing firefighters to disable pesky drones. crews can jam the signal or shoot the drones down if necessary. penalties for drone operators are harsher. this is believed to be the first law of its kind in the country. another setback for volkswagen. state regulators say vw plans for deesle vehicles is incomplete and efficient t. they wanted to recall certain deesle calls represented to the admission scandal.

volkswagen agreed to spend $15 million to settal lawsuit related to the scandal. the california air resources board said yesterday recalling the cars does not let regulators fully evaluate whether the emissions have actually been fixed. 4:50 right now. in business news, wall street certainly on a roll. will it continue today? we saw the markets take a plunge. and then a big comeback earlier this week. >> the markets, scott was talking about yesterday, are reaching peak levels and talking about pokemon go. another thing that's frenzied. we'll have much more on that and touch base with landon dowdy from our cnbc headquarters hopefully later in this show. in the meantime though, janitors at dell santa clara office are going to be protesting later today. they are accusing the pc maker of being too greedy. those janitors union recently secured a pay hike from $11 an hour to $15. just weeks later the union says

dell and subcontractor announced they will be replacing those workers with cheaper non-union workers. according to the janitors, if dell had kept them it would have cost the company $50,000 per year. that's less than 1% of the ceo's annual salary. >> let's see how the 1% and others are doing in business news this morning, wall street on that room that we were talking about. let's check in with landon do y dowdy, live at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning. wall street could push further into record territory today. futures are higher and the markets' recent rally slacked off on wednesday but the dow and s&p 500 still managing to close at new highs. one of the strongest rallies since the start of the current bull market in 2009 shooting pretty much straight up since the initial brexit related sell-off last month. 24 points to 18372. the nasdaq slipping 17 to 5005.

foothills in san jose. as conditions are shaping up here, kari, is it windy? >> right now the winds are mostly calm and probably the best conditions we'll have all day before the winds pick up and those temperatures rise. go now at 64 degrees in the south bay. and it is a warmer start there. 53 degrees in the north bay with cool conditions. mostly clear skies. it heats up to 96 today in the north bay. also some upper 90s. triple digits in the tri-valley. 95 today in the south bay. so i'll give you an idea of what to expect as we head into the weekend with some slightly cooler temperatures. mike's tracking that fire in the south bay and the impact on the commute. >> that's right, kari. two issues to report in this early commute right now on thursday. speed sensors around the bay predictable. 880 northbound at 101, reports of a chumpg of concrete in the middle of the freeway so there may be a traffic heading through the air. traffic is light. it shouldn't be a problem. east of that de
