undergoi ining chemotherapy. the flames seen for miles. we are live with an update from firefighters next. breaking news here in oakland. a man shot and killed right near the 580 interstate. i'm bob redell. ville that story coming up at "today in the bay" starts now. very good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. let's get right to breaking news. brush fire in the san jose foothills. kris sanchez is live on sierra road. no homes are threatened. the fire is under control. >> no homes are threatened. you can see the danger that was in the path of this fire. all of that charred black about ten acres worth of grass that was burned. but then in the distance you see all of those homes and this fire was headed downhill fast toward allen rock park and all of the homes that are down in the area. the fire was also burning up the hill on the other side of sierra

road. but cal fire and san jose fire credit a good working partnership with getting this fire under control within about an hour of those first calls this morning. the challenge here is that in a nighttime fire you don't have any air support so you have no water dropping from the sky. so all the water has to be trucked into this area because there are no fire high drabt yd nearby. but because there is no risk, they are watching for hot spots, a good time to remind everybody that fire danger is extremely high. >> now, i just remind people it's hot, it's dry. even at night fire risk is extreme. so we just ask people to be very careful with all ignition sources. >> now, it is unknown how this fire started and it will likely never be known how the fire started but firefighters again say do be careful there is a lot of dry bush arush and tinder fre heavier materials as well.

many of them have gone back down the hill in san jose because they say they don't know what could happen next. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the update, kris. more breaking news, this time in the east bay where there's a homicide investigation under way right now near the oakland emeryville border. this is near san pablo avenue. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live there. this is still a very active crime scene as we see behind you. >> reporter: good morning. you've got several oakland police squad cars here blocking off this section of 35th street which is right here in san pablo. the emeryville border is literally a block away. and to your left you've got the abutment for the 580 interstate. beyond the suv is a body of a man in his 30s or 40s splaed out on the road. shot and killed a little bit after 4:00 this morning. the police tell us that it was -- the shot spotter system, the network of microphones in this part of oakland that

alerted police to the fact there were shots fired and mapped a location and immediately notified them. when they arrived they found this man dead in the street along with his backpack nearby. no suspect description though we did speak with a security guard off camera who works at the california hotel located across the street and he tells us he heard about four to five gunshots and then saw a black jeep drive off leaving, again, this man in his 30s or 40s lying dead. at least one shot wound here in the middle of 35th street here in oakland. we are still waiting for the alameda county coroner's office to arrive to pick up the body. bob redell, "today in the bay." it is 6:03. a second person is in jail this morning in connection with a shooting death of a man in hayward. shooting happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of meekland road and blot some way. police say the shoot eer jumped out of a car, fired at the victim and took off running.

the suspect was arrested. the late last night police found the drive verts of car the shooter was in. now they're working on finding a motive. >> whether this is just random gang or gun violence, we don't know. or whether this was specifically targeted, we don't know. >> police plan to release more information surrounding the case later today. two suspects facing charges in a brazen and suspense-filled shooting and robbery in windsor are expected in court later today. this happened outside a busy chase bank on tuesday afternoon. you can still see the bullet holes in the wall of the bank. police say that two masked men shot and robbed a guard and officers tracked them down in calistoga where they say the man shot at police officer. police finally captured them in napa county. the bank is expected to reopen today despite very rattled nerves. >> we realized that we got a shot right here. that's when i realized that it

could have been me. you know, could have been any of us. >> that's where the guard shot. investigators say he's still recovering from his gunshot wounds. a first for the san jose police department. some officers are now patrolling the streets with body cameras. for the first time yesterday 21 officers were issued the cameras following a four-hour training session. eventually the devices will be standard equipment for the entire force. officers will be required to have them turned on for all active confrontations that do not have potential pry vas i have conflicts. >> we tell our officers you're not going to get in trouble for the videos you have. what's going to get you in trouble is when you're supposed to have a video and you don't. >> officers will only be allowed to turn the cameras off for things like private conversations and strip searches. they will not be able to alter or delete the video or view it after violent confrontations without first providing a statement. a fiery crash in vallejo last night that involved five

cars. this was on highway 37 about 6:30 at the sonoma boulevard off-ramp. all westbound lanes were shut down for hours and a woman and a child were both injured in that crash. forcing emergency crews, you see the helicopter there, to airlift the child to the hospital. we're told the child suffered major injuries. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. firefighters do not yet know what caused a fire that heavily damaged a novato home last night on buchanan street near cambridge. it started on the second floor. no injuries were reported. hot and dry out there. and another "spare the air" day. >> air quality is issue, so are wildfires. good morning. >> yes, it is. just so dry. when you turn up the temperatures it really makes it very dangerous out there. so be careful with any fires out there or just flicking a cigarette out the window. you don't want to do that. now we start out at 54 degrees. nice conditions as you head out the door. mostly clear skies.

a few low clouds near the coastline. keep it cool there. 75 degrees in san francisco today while the north bay is up to 95 and 96 degrees. some upper 90s in spots and close to 100 degrees. we'll talk about how hot it gets as we go into the forecast after seeing some of those temperatures today reaching into the mid to upper 80s. let's head over to mike now. you're hearing about yet another crash involving a motorcycle. >> kari, with the warmer weather and the nicer day of note because more folks do ride smaller vehicle, hard of them to see, often see crashes. this one over here in the tri-valley. as i get out of your way, the roadway showing a pretty predictable drive. southbound 680 does flow through plea son on the. in sunol crash you just heard about around castle. watch the activity on the shoulder. doesn't sound like major injuries was motorcycle involved. look over towards south 880 and hayward and union city.

quite alarming. >> they are when you consider 80% of americans say have engaged in some sort of aggressive driving. some sort of road rage or anger while behind the wheel. and even more so surprising than that, 8 million people in this aaa survey said that they have actually done something about it. they got out of the car and confronted someone or tried to ram another car. 8 million drivers on the road with extreme forms of road rage, contact road rage, you might say. interesting numbers in this survey that came from aaa's foundation for traffic safety just out at midnight. what they found is that over half of the people admit that they were tailgating, almost half say they were yelling and honking at other drivers about a third. shot some angry gestures. you can imagine what those may have been like. a quarter say they tried to block another car. aaa says it doesn't really have

to get that bad. be forgiving. if someone takes your parking space, they probably are just having a bad day or maybe didn't even see you waiting there. lots of people are concerned that this is a serious safety threat and, in fact, they warn that if someone gets out and confronts you, don't confront them back. call 911. >> yeah, no kidding. a lot of people get hot under the collar there. got to let it go. tracie, thanks so much. speaking of cars this morning. another setback for volkswagen. state regulators say vw's plan for diesel vehicles is incomplete and deficient. they wanted to recall certain diesel calls related to the i'm mission scanned. voegs wagon agreed to spend $15 million to settal lawsuit related to the scandal. the california air resources board said yesterday recalling the cars do not let regulators fully evaluate whether the emissions have been fixed. a federal court ruling may open general motors to billions of dollars in death and injury

claims. junls ruled general motors is still liable for faulty ignition switches even though it declared bankruptcy in 2009. gm knew about the problems before it declared bankruptcy but failed to disclose them. the new gm was protected from any lawsuits pre-dating the chapter 11 declaration. gm is accused of blocking up to $10 billion in claims. utah lawmakers may have an answer to the problem of drones getting in the way during raging wildfires. firefighters in utah say the drones over fires may have cost the state millions of dollars. that is because they have used air tankers to be grounded, it forced the air tankers to be grounded at critical junctures of the firefight. lums fastraked a law allowing firefighters to disable pesky drones. crews can jam up the signal or shoot the drones down. penalties for drone operators are going to get harer there. this is believed to be the first law of its kind in the country.

peter teal has been chosen as a speaker at the republican conventi convention. >> scott mcgrew, there have been questions as to whether he's a republican. >> there have been questions if donald trump is a republican. teal is probably a libertarian. he made a fortune by cofounding paypal. he will speak at the convention the same night mr. trump speaks. he is one of the very few silicon valley leaders who has endorsed trump. intel ceo was going to hold a fund-raiser for trump but changed his mind. u.s. treasury secretary jack lew wrapped up a meeting with the european leadership. one thing they discussed is whether the eu would hit silicon valley's apple with an enormous tax bill. enormous, like billions upon billions of dollars. apple set up operations in ireland, an eu country and paid less tax according to irish tax

rules. the eu says what ireland did was wrong but it wants to charge apple for the back taxes. apple said we fofollowed irelan rules don't punish us. the secretary of the u.s. treasury is now involved shows how serious this is. tesla owners, turn off the auto driving features. we're looking for a good day on the market. several companies turning in excellent financial reports. big tech company out of korea called line debuted after a billion dollar. many of us from the '80s wished that they had left it alone. others are upset it has a female cast cast. richard roper, the most famous critic, says it's one of the worst movies he's ever seen. but -- >> the new version. >> yes. rolling stone, "washington

increased threat of wildfires. we are seeing increased temperatures here from the last couple of days. kari hall is joining us now. this will be the peak of the week. >> because we had such hot weather, you can tell just by the temperatures we're going to have and how hot it's been this summer, why that snowpack has melted to fast. live look from emeryville, we start out this morning nice, cool temperatures. in the 50s for most of us. and as we go through the day, it ramps up quickly with that heat building as we go through late morning and early afternoon. concord now, 62 degrees. also 62 now in san jose. oakland is at 58 degrees and 55 now in napa. as we break it down for oakland today going hour by hour, low 60s to start. nice weather for the morning. whatever you have t. o do outsi. try and get it done early. it will not feel comfortable at all. other spots will be much hotter. so with we do have a "spare the air" alert in effect once again. and you are urged to take public

transportation if you can and ozone levels and the air quality will be the most unhealthy in the east bay as well as the south bay, the peninsula as well as the north bay will have moderate to unhealthy air-conditions as you go into the hottest hours of the day. and highs will reach into the 90s, even 100 degrees in the south bay. palo alto, 89 and 72 degrees today in the mission district. and 94 in santa rosa. wide range in temperatures in the coast of the inland areas. valleys will of course be the hottest reaching over 100 degrees in a few spots. high pressure is still very strong. keeping the heat moving in today as well as tomorrow. but it does start to back down just a few degrees tomorrow. feeling still very hot in parts of the tri-valley and over towards the delta and north bay. mike, saturday it gets a little bit better as well. our weather improves. on sunday, the best day of the weekend. so here's the way it looks as we go into the tri-valley over the next five days.

tomorrow, 97 degrees. the average high is 88 degrees. we won't be breaking any records but we will be well above average. and then the weekend it turns cooler than average. even into the start of next week we'll be in the lower 80s. as we look at all the microclimates this weekend, mid 90s for tomorrow in the south bay. 84 degrees on sunday. you can see that trend also for san francisco, 65 degrees by the end of the weekend. and coming out of the 90s in the tri-valley to bring it back to 84 degrees on sunday. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. mike sees that commute starting to build. >> gentle bid build but we do s it. looking at the sensors. san jose never quite got rid of the slowing. i do want to talk about this crash still registering southbound 680. i'm told it was about castle but from pattern maybe back over towards south of burnow. no major problems for livermore. 580 approaching but a good amount of traffic heading there.

nbc bay area responds to a local driver who got into a crash with a cop. >> kris camorra is here with his story. >> ryan was rear-ended by a cop. damage was minor but he wanted his insurance company geico to pay for the repairs. he says geico told him to submit a claim through the police department and deal with the government timetable or process the claim through geico and get it moving now. but with that option ryan would be on the hook for his $500 deductible. >> even though i did nothing, even though i'm not at fault my insurance says i'm not at fault, i still have to pay the deductible. >> that's right. if you submit a climb through

jose foothills p. the fire out but crews still at the scene. breaking within the last few minutes, kris sanchez learning fire crews may have a possible cause. we'll have her live report coming on in just one minute. first, good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. luckily this happened at night. crews were able to get a handle on it quickly. if it happened in the middle of the day, it would be much more dangerous. lots of hot temperatures. >> yes, it will be very hot today and then we'll also have the winds picking up. so it's all calm and also some cool temperatures to start out this morvening. it's 62 degrees in the south bay and 5 58 degrees in the east bay. 75 in san francisco. while the north bay, south bay, and the tri-valley will be h hitting the mid 90s. coming up, we'll talk about a slightly cooler air moving in in

time for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike just got a report of flooding in san jose? >> that's what the chp reports. let me put it in perspective. the roadways and you're looking at going, flooding, what? we do have a smooth flow of traffic. we have the build over here you expect from hayward to the san mateo bridge. in the south bay we often see it hit for 101 and clear. that didn't leave this morning. we'll talk about that but i want to say that report of flooding is just off the allen rock on the ramp. probably a busted sprinkler but do watch out there will be more flooding in one of your lanes. it's going to be water there basically. there's water here but then there was the earlier fire in san jose's east hill. i do want to gerald foive you t shot. it never really let up and now the morning commute is kicking in. this has been a tough drive this one section 101 to 880. more now on that breaking news we've been following.

kris sanchez at the scene of a brush fire burning in the san jose foothills is out but kris has been out there all morning long and now you're hearing about a possible cause? >> yes, we're hearing about the cause, laura. it's interesting because we've been talking this morning about how far this fire is from homes and populated areas. so there wasn't a really obvious heat source to start the fire. once the firefighters were able to start walking around they suspected that fireworks could be to blame. they found a roman candle nearby. they don't know if it was related to the fire that happened this morning. but they know that this is an area where fireworks certainly could be a possibility. and the fact that the fire burned on beoth sides of sierra road indicated perhaps it may have started in more than one spot. let's go to that video. it was a very voracious fire. it consumed a lot of grass quickly. burning up the hillside on one side of sierra road and down the

hillside toward alum rock park. there it is very close to homes. because the firefighters -- san jose fire and cal fire both responded to this incident they did make very quick work of the fire and water tinders came into the area and so they were able to put the fire out. that was the only source of water, bringing the water in. there are no fire hydrants out here in this open space preserve area. again, fireworks are definitely a consideration. >>ic it was a roman candle that was found over in the parking area. whether or not it was left over from fourth of july or not, we  don't know. this is an area where people have lit off fireworks in the past. >> it's clear how dangerous it is. >> absolutely. yes. >> reporter: and particularly dangerous on a night that didn't have favorable conditions like last night. if this had been any other night where there had been a breeze, maybe a little bit more hot, or there might have been lightning this situation could have been drastically different.

again, the ten-acre fire was out within an hour and a half of the first reports and most of the firefighters have gone back to their stations to wait for the next one which they hope is not set off by fireworks. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, kris. 6:34. more breaking news, this time in the east bay. homicide investigation near the oakland/emeryville border near san pablo avenue. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is there. you've been learning more details from local business owners. >> we have. good morning. oakland police here still on the scene of san pablo and 35th street. as you look down 35th street beyond that suv you won't be able to see it but protecting you from that but there's a body of a man in his 30s or 40s laid out in the middle of the road rating for coroner to come here and process that part of the investigation. the police department did call in the manager of the chevron that's located here which is right next to the 580 to have that person come in so they can

look at the surveillance tapes to see if any of the cameras at that gas station captured what happened. right now there are no witnesses to the actual shooting itself. the shot spotter system, a network of microphones in this part of town that alerted police as well as anonymous 911 call alerting them to the fact that someone had been shot out here. this happened around 4:20 this morning. we spoke to a security guard who works at the california hotel that's located right across the street. he tells us that around that time he heard four or five distinct shots, went outside, saw if t. man in the middle of the road and saw a jeep with two or three people wearing hoodies inside this jeep slowly riding off away from the scene. >> i heard four or five gunshots, boom, boom, boom. then i came out and i seen a vehicle leaving. nl and then i came out, the guy was sitting in the middle of the street, gasping for air. i tilted his head back to open

up his airway and called 911. >> did he say anything? >> he didn't. he was just gasping for air. >> he was saying what? >> he wasn't saying anything. he was gasping for air. that was it. i opened his airway, called the ambulance. they walked me through procedure trying to keep his airway open and maybe five or six minutes later they showed up. >> that man shot unfor fautly died in the arms of this security guard. the oakland police department has not yet identified the dead man. again, they're waiting for coroner to come out here to check to see if he has a wallet or anything that might identify him that's in a backpack sitting next to them. they are not 100% sure that it was related to this shooting. again, a man shot and killed, 35th street here right by 580 and san pablo, a block away from the border are emeryville. reporting live in oakland uks b, bob redell, "today in the bay." a developing story.

hundreds of stole gun ts from the sacramento area could be in the bay area. >> security cameras captured a honda cr-v slamming into the gun shop near sacramento yesterday. there a group stole an ak-47. earlier in the morning police say the same car was used in another gun store burglary in folsom where 15 weapons were taken. they led investigators to oakland. there the fed surrounded a home at 58th avenue and macarthur boulevard. agents swarmed the home and made arrests. the group could be connected to a string of burglaries. >> vehicle drove into the front of the business. it is similar to what we had at nor cal gun shop several months ago. we probably think it is related to that. >> the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and fire alps says over the past six months there have been several gun store robberies in the sacramento area. thieves have stolen more than 240 firearms. reports now coming out about the draymond green arrest

indicated it started with a spat that had been brew for two days. police in east lansing, michigan, arrested green on sunday after he slapped a michigan state student. green smiled for his mug shot. germane edmonson plays football for the spartans. they had a run-in the night before when green bumped into him and his girlfriend outside a local par. edmonson originally did not want to press charges but later changed his mind. >> i don't think the league is going to be able to ignore this. >> st. mary's sports manager, he believes green may face a fine or possible game suspension. we have new details on the breaking news that we brought to you yesterday morning. a fire that guted a livermore warehouse in a very industrial area of livermore is now being called suspicious. miller's air conditioning and heating caught fire about midnight last night. the company is on research drive right off south vasco road. investigators say the time and the origin of the fire are what

makes it suspicious. no one was injured in that fire. let's check the conditions for today. it's set to be hot later today. it's "spare the air" day as well, kari. >> yes, it is. one of the hottest days of the week. we could be reaching the peak of the heat, especially the valleys this afternoon. start out with nice cool conditions as you step out the door. mostly clear skies and some coastal fog will keep the temperatures down in san francisco. only 75 degrees. 94 in santa rosa. and check out how hot it gets in the tri-valley into the north bay and down to the south bay. morgan hill, high of 98 degrees. san jose will be up to 91 and palo alto, 91 degrees. with those 80s and 90s today we will once again have a slightly cooler wreekd weekend ahead. i'll talk about that in ten minutes. mike is still track that motorcycle crash. >> the motorcycle and pickup truck are both on the shoulder and no major injuries. show you the slowing right there over on the right side of your

we're following a developing story out of phoenix. police are looking for a serial kill their is on the prowl. phoenix police say the killer has been terrorizing the city since march. nine people have been shot. seven have died. we're still wait for confirmation the man arrested is the suspect phoenix police are looking for. we'll of course continue to follow this breaking news and bring you the latest information as soon as we get it. back in california, a krrks chp officer is recovering after crashing his motorcycle. that officer was headed to a pursuit when he fell on the roadway near the american canyon exit. he was airlifted to the hospital and no other vehicles were involved. we're told the officer is expected to be okay. decision 2016. donald trump says he will introduce his running mate tomorrow morning. sources tell nbc that donald trump has not yet decided

quality will be unhealthy. if you have breathing problems, you don't want to spend extra time outdoors and once again it's not the best time to exercise either. and a look at all of the highs. that's the microclimate, senate, 81 degrees. 91 in saratoga. 72 in the mission district. fairfield, 101. 99 in antioch. livermore hitting 100 degrees. high pressure causing all of this heat across the region. and this will be the hottest day of the week. still though, very hot tomorrow once again for the valleys. and then on saturday, starts to improve. sunday will be the best day of the weekend to get outside and take in all of this beautiful weather as we actually trend cooler than average in the tri-valley after hitting 97 tomorrow. down to 84 degrees on sunday. and a look ahead to the weekend forecast, we will once again have a cooling trend moving in with some mid 80s for the inland areas and mid 60s for san francisco. heading over to mike now, he looks like san jose is bogging

down? >> yes, bottom of our screen. you see the sensors off of 85 and 87 there. now they're really starting to see more slowing. pattern typical around the bay. looking over here toward the tri-valley. still have that crash on the shoulder. just past there. we see speeds recovering. they may have started to clear that scene. no lanes blocked. easy for the tri-valley. same thing over here and the san mateo bridge. without much issue, we'll talk about that but i want to make sure i show you the approach toward the pay branbay bridge. upper east shore freeway shows the build. and zipping as far as speeds go through berkeley and university avenue. right now or toward bridge boulevard, the off-ramp, earlier stall. just cleared. easier drive toward the golden gate bridge. live across the span, low clouds kicking in at the top of the towers. that may affect your view on the north side of the bridge but speeds are fine there. san mateo bridge, speeds improve a bit westbound.

lk in the east san jose foothills. >> kris sanchez habitat scene for the last several hours. this is a situation that could have been much worse. >> reporter: could have been much worse. you see the black charred area behind me here where firefighters are still watching for hot spots on the other side of the screen, you see how hot and bright that fire was burning. it was visible from quite a ways away. what we can tell you is because of the quick partnership between the san jose fire department and call fire they did get it out within an hour. once investigators were out, able to walk around and look for a cause they started to suspect that fireworks might be to blame in this one because there's no other heat source around. this area is pretty far from homes and other obvious heat source and also firefighters did find a roman candle nearby. >> i think there was a roman candle found. whether or not it was left over from fourth of july, we don't

know. this is an area where people have lit off fireworks in the past. >> it's clear how dangerous it is. >> absolutely. yeah. >> reporter: adding to this suspicion, too, is the fact that the fireworks burning on beth sides of sierra road without any wind fact their might have made the fire jump, the fire was going up the hill on one side and down the hill on the other side, very quickly toward the populated area and toward alum rock part. that definitely would have be a major concern. people could have lost their homes if the fire had gotten that far that fast. >> you're right. more breaking news this morning. this time in oakland where a man was shot and killed on 35th street at san pablo avenue. these are life pictures from the scene right now. this is near 580 and the california hotel. the shot spotter system alerted officerses to that shooting. they found the sivictim dead in the middle of the street. investigators are now trying to

figure out what happened. a witness tells us he heard about five shots and then saw a black jeep speed off. he said three to four people were in that jeep wearing hoodies. bob redell is on the scene right now gathering information. he will have the latest throughout the "today" show. a second person in jail in connection with a shooting death in hayward. the victim in this case was shot while just sitting behind the wheel of his car waiting to make a turn. it all happened yesterday afternoon at the intersection of meekland road and blot blossom way. the shooter fired at the victim and took off running. the suspect was found later and arrested and then late last night police found and arrested the driver of the car the shooter was riding in. investigators are working to determine a motive. >> whether this is just random gang or gun violence, we don't know. or whether this was specifically targeted we don't know. >> as for the latest, police plan to release more information surrounding this case later
