first look at the american father and son killed in the attack in nice. >> 51-year-old sean copeland and len-year-old son brodie are from austin, texas. they were vacationing in nice with the family. >> good friday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm some brach. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. it is 1:30 in the afternoon in nice and that city is still in shock after last night's attack that left at least 84 people dead and so many more injured. >> a man plowed through crowds of people celebrating bastille

difficult. the driver was shot and killed by police. lucy has more on this horrific attack. >> reporter: a night of carnage in nice and france today waking up to the aftermath of yet another devastating attack. the third in just 18 months. it was supposed to be a night of celebration, bastille day is france's most important national holiday. the equivalent of a fourth of july celebration in america. families and tourists were out for the fireworks show. they were enjoying their evening when a man plowed that enormous truck into the crowd at about 10:40 p.m. local time. driving nearly a mile across a busy promenade before he was shot dead by police. an act avenue terror according to french president hollande and one that didn't require bomb or explosive to devastate this nation. all it took was a determined attacker. no formal claim of responsibility by any group at this stage although in the jihadist circles on social media we did see some cheering of this

carnage on various pros on islam counts. president barack obama condemning what he said appears to be a horrific terrorist attack on nice and the french president vowing to step up the military campaign against isis in iraq and syria, likely cold comfort for the dozens of families mourning in the aftermath of this violence. a warning for americans in france from the u.s. consulate in marseille. the consult urging them to be in contact with family and use caution as they go out and about and to monitor local news for details. even though france has been under the state of emergency since the november terror attacks in paris there are no travel warnings in effect for that country. the attack on the bastille day celebration in nice happened as many people here in the bay area were also preparing to celebrate france. >> a small but emotional group gathered outside of the french consulate in san francisco last night expressing pain and sorrow

for the nice community. others raised a glass to honor a country and a lifestyle that they love. >> my heart is heavy. you know, but, you know, the french, we're strong and we have a history of looking at the more pleasantries in life. >> it's the third time. and i have my brother who lives in nice. i was like, damn, that could have been him. >> a vigil is planned for 3:00 on saturday. that is happening at san francisco city hall shlt. we will have much more on our show including how the bay area plans to mourn. you can stay up on the latest information with our app. breaking news this morning, back at home in oakland where police say four people are recovering after a late night shooting. this happened about 10:00 on 7 street near peralta only a few blocks away from the west oakland b.a.r.t. station.

three men and one woman was shot and all transported to nearby hospitals. so far, no update on the victims' conditions in that quadruple shooting. police are saying nothing about possible suspects or a motive. more than 12 hours later and there's still no estimated time for reopening a busy roadway in east san jose. crews worked overnight to cap a gas leak on alum ro avenue. the leak broebl just about 2:00 in the afternoon. pg&e says the natural gas line was damaged during routine maintenance. no one was injured but inconvenienced. pg&e maintains there is no danger to the community at this hour. someone has been slashing homeless tent, the tents of homeless people with a knife in downtown san jose. the suspect has been coined machete jack by the victims. the mercury news reports three have been struck and the onlysut only targeting the tents of the

homeless people but also their bicycle tires. homeless advocates say this is a hate crime and accusing a work we're the department of transportation with being behind these attacks. that department which over sees illegal homeless camping clean-up denies the allegations. the two suspects connected to tuesday's armed robbery in windsor are being connected to a string of crimes up and down the state of california. su sergei and ivan are facing charges of attempted murder and armed robbery after shooting and robbing an armored car guard earlier this week. sonoma county sheriff's deputies are saying they're also connected to other crimes that includes carjacking, a victim who was playing pokemon go in sacramento. investigators say they're happy to see the suspects off the streets. >> we feel very good about our role in what happened. and the town of windsor obviously, our community did a fantastic job of writing us with information from what they saw.

happening today in san francisco, a rally to kick off the campaign to recall mayor ed lee. that is happening at 10:00 this morning at city hall. the legal paperwork was filed last week. the committee that spearheading is campaign will have to collect roughly 47,000 valid signatures within 160 days. that will qualify the recall for the november ballot. the committee says mayor ed lee has failed to deal with the

homeless crisis, sfpd scandals and has give can ven larger than needed tax breaks to corporation. the ku klux klan flyer that was distributed, they say the flyer is legitimate and they're recruiting. many said such racist bigotry is not welcome in san francisco. the group's west coast leader tells the chronicle, quote, we're getting a lot more calls, especially with the black lives matter, calling for war and saying they are to kill all whites, close quotes. governor brown is aimed for the delay. it's been more than 30 days since 12 mayors asked the state for fund for new surveillance along the freeways. hercules mayor tells us the governor has yet to take any action. >> what it want to know is how many camera ises is it going to take to cover interstate 80 and

a motorcycle carrying a cameraman had to slam on the brakes because there were too many spectators crowding the roadway. then you know what happened next. a pack of cyclists slammed one into another at the end. and into the motorcycle, into the crowd in the aftermath the race leader actually ditched his broken bike and tried running to the finish line. i don't even know if that counts. he eventually did cross the line several minutes off the pace. initially costing him the yellow leader jersey. however, this is interesting, too, race officials ultimately decided to award all the riders in the crash the same finishing time. i'm thinking the guy in the pack is going, yes. >> i just went from last to first place like that. thank you, motorcycle. >> i have seen people pick up their bike and run across and i think that counts. but without the bike.

>> i don't know. they don't put up barricades there and so the people do spill on to the roadway. they don't get out in time. >> they need to fix that. >> they never will. the tour de france is how old? >> rule changes for this multidecade event. >> you're not going to want to ride your bike today, it's going to be hot. >> it's going to be hot but it is encouraged for you to catch public transportation or ride your bike if you can. >> i meant for exercise. >> as we look outside at the bay bridge, it's already getting busy out there. we'll check in with mike to see what's happening as you head out for that commute. but looking at our temperatures now, mostly at 59 degrees for most of the bay area. and as you head into the north bay, 54 degrees in santa rosa as well as san francisco. as we break it down hour by hour for livermore we start out in the 50s and then jump into the mid 60s by 8:00. 75 degrees by 10:00. mid 80s, mid 90s, and then it starts to come back down. so we will see the temperatures rising very quickly throughout the morning and early afternoon.

a look at all of the microclimates, it will be hot again today but at least we won't see as many wide spread triple digits as we did yesterday. it will be a few degrees cooler in spots. in san rafael today, 84 degrees. antioch, 92. pleasanton, 97 degrees. there will be a cooler sea breeze today. and that will help out right along the coastline. then we'll all get some relief tomorrow as this cold front drops in. it will also be just enough moisture to bring in some spotty showers for far northwestern california. for us it stays dry but at least it will be cooler. a look at what to expect over the next five days in san jose. dropping to near or even slightly below average heading into sunday as well as monday. and a look ahead to the weekend. it will be a nice one. temperatures dropping down slightly and not as hot as we will see today. let's head over to mike now. got a crash on the bay bridge. >> just heard about this. westbound 80, that's your

commute in towards san francisco. it moves smoothly past the tower and in towards treasure island. but treasure island is where i hear about a crash, a sig alert. it's going to be a big problem for an half hour. traffic flows smoothly. i'm trying to get detail on how many lanes are blocked. that may be a delay across the bay bridge. look at the maps, a smooth flow of traffic. another in san jose kris told you about the gas leak being attacked over here in alum rock. it's gotten capped but still work going on. that's closed from northbound 680 and you can't access northbound 680 from surface streets so use capital over to mckee. over at san mateo bridge, a quick look at the overnight road work. everything is on schedule westbound. moves smoothly to the peninsula. back to you. thank you. donald trump will not announce his running mate this morning as promise and highly anticipated.

the richmond san rafael bridge is moving forward. soon a third eastbound lane could be a reality. the plan has been formally submitted to caltrans and that means construction could start as early as october with an estimated opening of december 2017. a landmark change for public schools. lbgtq mks and fight for civil rights is going to be included in social studies. >> legislation drew political opposition when it was first approved but after much input the state board of education unanimously decided on that new curriculum yesterday. under the new rules lessons will start in earlier dpragrades and focus on diverse families. then it will move on to the lgbt fight. the fight for the weekend is a lot closer. kari? >> good morning. we will have some beautiful weather coming out of the 100-degree temperature we had yesterday. i'll talk more about that coming
