through a crowd killing dozens of people. nearly 100 in all. the details we're learning about the americans killed in the attack. i'm live in san francisco where there are signs of support for france. i spoke to a bay area mom who witnessed the attacks. i'll have her story. and breaking news here at home. four people shot in the streets of oakland. what we know now about the victims. "today in the bay" starts right now. good morning the thank you for joining us on this friday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez. we know that you might want to get away this weekend but you're going to want the forecast as well. >> yes. it is going to be a nice weekend for getting away or staying at home. it won't be as hot as we've seen the temperatures in last couple of days for the valleys reaching into the 90s and near 100 degrees. right now it's 58 degrees in the south bay. and the san francisco area right at about 54 degrees up to 66 for the high today, still upper 80s, still 90s.

but definitely an improvement over yesterday. i'll talk about what to expect for this weekend. that's coming up, heading over to mike now updating a crash at the treasure island turn them. >> in the tunnel itself. chp told us a couple of lane, maybe three blocked and that it would be quite some time to cleared but they just cleared all but the last car from the roadway. one lane remains closed. that's why we see this backup. before you get to the tower and into treasure island. just past the tunnel we do see speeds starting to improve as they clear one of the lanes. we still have the slow lane blocked for another few minutes. the rest of the bay moves well but we'll talk about a reroute for san jose coming up. for now, back to you. now we head to oakland for breaking news this morning. that's where police say that four people are recovering after a late night shooting. it happened at about 10:00 on 7 street near peralta. police say three men and one woman were shot and that all of those folks were transported to nearby hospitals. we do not have an update on the

victims' conditions. police are also saying nothing about possible suspects or a motive. now to our continuing coverage out of france where celebrations quickly turned into a nightmare as a truck plowed through a crowd in nice. the death toll continues to climb this morning. 84 people are dead. dozens of others are hurt. many of them are still in critical condition. french officials say the truck driver had explosives and grenades in that truck. the suspect was then shot dead by police and has yet to be identified. so far no terror group has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack. this morning we are learning that a father and a son from texas are among the dozens of people killed in the horrific attack. family members confirm sean copeland and his. 11-year-old son are among the dead. in a statement from the family they said, quote, we are heartbroken and in shock over

the loss. the chilling attack hits very close to home here in the bay area as a walnut creek family was vacationing in nice and got caught up in that chaos. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda just spoke with the family. sharon, they were just feet away from where a this all happened. >> that's right, kris. i spoke to the mom this morning and she's in complete shock. we're hearing a lot of emotional accounts from bay area residents who saw these attacks. i just got off the phone as you said with the mom from walnut creek who witnessed the attacks. sar la luke a said she brought her 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son to france to learn more about the culture. the kids attend a french school here in the bay area. she says chaos broke out after the fireworks. >> the shooting and the truck drove into the people and everybody just started running and so did we. i grabbed my little daughter, you know, to rush as much as we

can. you see all these people just crying and screaming. >> reporter: and luka says this morning she went out to the park, the area where they were last night, where they saw the fireworks and today people are just milling around still in shock, still grieving over what happened yesterday. we also spoke to a livermore couple who was on vacation there and they also witnessed the attacks. we'll have their story in about half an hour. reporting live in san francisco, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. the u.s. consulate in marseille issued a warning to americans in nice to use caution and to monitor local news for updates. even though france has been under a state of emergency since the november terror attacks in paris there are no formal travel warnings in effect for that country. >> in the meantime president obama released this statement last night. quote, i have directed my team to be in touch with french

>> meantime hillary clinton met with tim kaine. they will begin their convention next week. a more details now on mike pence's background. he has served as a congressman for more than a decade after becoming governor of indiana three years ago. socially conservative and born again evangelical christian. the biggest controversy of his political career happened last year when he signed a so-called religious freedom law. critics claimed it allowed open discrimination of the lgbt community. it allowed travel boycotts in several cities including san francisco. the indiana legislature eventually amended that law. kris, bay area trump supporters are suing the city of san jose. mayor liccardo, police chief and others after violence broke out last month.

14 people filed that lawsuit after they say they were assaulted, intimidated and threatened by protesters. the trump supporters also claim san jose police failed to protect them. san jose's mayor is responding saying, quote, the ludicrous accusation that i somehow directed the police department to stand down at the rally is utterly false. in fact, i have no authority to issue such an order. we are following more breaking news this morning. this out of los altos hills where a firefighter is recovering after fighting a house fire. crews were called in at 2:30 to a two alarm fire at a vacant house under construction. a firefighter had to be taken to the hospital to be evaluated for minor injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. it's 5:07 right now. it's taken about 14 hours to cap a gas leak. there is still however no estimated time for reopening a busy roadway in east san jose.

crews worked overnight to cap a gas leak on alum rock avenue. the leak broke out just before 2:00 thursday afternoon. pg&e says natural gas line was damaged during routine maintenance. nobody was injured. pg&e maintains there's no danger to the community at this hour. we're going bring you a live report. someone has been slashing the tebts of homeless team with a knife in downtown san jose. and that suspect has been coined machete jack by some of the victims. "mercury news" reports that at least three homeless camps have been struck. the suspect is not only targeting the tents of the homeless people but also their bicycle tires. homeless advocates say this is a hate crime and they are accusing a worker with the department of transportation in this attack. that department which oversees the clean-up of illegal homeless encampments denies the allegation. the two suspects connected to tuesday's armed robbery in windsor are being connected to a string of crimes up and down the state of california.

sergei and ivan are facing charges of attempted murder and armed robbery or shooting and robbing a armored car guard this week. sonoma county sheriff's deputies say they are also connect to other crimes including carjacking a victim playing pokemon go. they're happy to see the suspects off the streets. >> we feel very good about our role and what happened and the town of windsor. obviously our community did a fantastic job of writing us with information from what they saw. >> investigators say the suspects could eventually face more charges in other counties as well. it is 5:09 now. let's talk with kari about that microclimate forecast. >> it is still going to be hot today but we do catch a little bit of a break, especially along the coastline. we will be up to 92 degrees in los gatos. mission district up to 66 degrees. also very warm in the north bay. napa, 83 while oakland is at 72.

financial guidance while you're mastering life. the police response to last month's deadly nightclub attack at pulse in orlando. this is video from a body camera that a university of central florida police officer was wearing at the time. it shows the scene outside of the club and the large number of patrol cars. that attack killed 49 people. police killed the gunman in their response. >> still so hard to see. well, a 9/11 conspiracy theory talked about for so many years may get some clarity today if did a group of prominent saudis help to plan and finance the terror attack of 9/11? >> u.s. lawmakers investigated that theory as part of a larger 9/11 congressional panel. and that part of the report amounting to 28 pages of details remained classified. well, now a source tells nbc news those secret pages may be

once again, heating us up. we start out at 58 degrees as well as oakland and some mid 50s for the north bay. upper 50s as you head out elsewhere in livermore, concord, as well as palo alto. it's 59 degrees. now, looking at hour by hour forecast for oakland, mid 50s to start. we rise into the mid to upper 70s there. and then the clouds start to move back in tonight. we'll have a high of 72 degrees there. palo alto, 77. and some low to mid 90s for the interior valleys. and witneonce again, it will ste hot as this high pressure pumps in heat. it does back off. it moves off to the east. and allows for some cooler air to move in this weekend. and our temperatures will be going down by sunday. it will be cool at the coastline. and still some warm temperatures in the mid to upper 80s for the inland areas. once again that will be a major improvement. and san francisco, our average high temperature, 66 degrees. and we'll be below that head

into sunday and early next week. looking like a nice one with still some low to mid 80s. still outdoor weather. mid 60s for the city sf and in the peninsula, 74 degrees on sunday. let's head over to mike now. we'll see what's happening as you head towards san francisco. >> getting back to the friday light that we would expect, kari, but still a little slow around the bend. recovery after the earlier crash finally cleared lanes. but it was enough to cause a rippling back along this bend right here past the tower. still in the westbound direction. maybe allow extra ten minutes and get there five minutes early. that's good. plan ahead. looking at a the map, speed sensors recovering after the earlier crash cleared. the rest of the bay looks good right now as far as the speeds. let's very good right now but northbound 101 we do have a crash reported as your heading up just past the airport, word of the crash but no slowing over the last five minutes. i'll continue to track that. we'll look at dublin, 580

going to have a chance to prove that her other caught daughter is still alive. >> reporter: doctors declared mcmath brain tadead following a botched tons sillectomy. the family sued for negligence. as long as mcmath is considered legally dead the limits on legal awards are much lower. appeals court this week orders the case back to trial court to determine the validity of jahi's. a new san francisco civil grand jury report calls for higher staffing levels for the city's jail system. that report issued yesterday cites a high number of inmates with mental health problems. it concludes about 15% are actually being treated for serious mental issues. the report calls for more staffing along with better training and procedures to handle the load. a new behavioral health justice center is being considered to improve the treatment of inmates. governor brown is getting the blame for the delay in

adding cameras along east bay freeways where there have been more than 20 shootings since november. it's been more than 30 days since 12 mayors asked the state for funding to buy new surveillance cameras for the area along the freeways. hercules mayor romero tells us the governor has yet to take any action. >> what i want to know is how many cameras is it going to take to cover the interstate 80 and highway 4. how many shot spotters are they talking about and how many license plate readers? that's a simple request. >> investigators believe the shootings are gang related but innocent people have been caught in the cross fire. four people have been killed and 12 injured. landmark change for course work in california public schools. lbgt history and civil rights. >> even in a state considered to be progress i. this legislation drew political opposition when it was first

for this weekend coming up, but mike says the crash in san jose is cleared. >> that's right. that's the good news. the rest of the south bay is clear as well. although damien is going to talk about the efbt of that gas leak on your freeway there just off of 680. meanwhile, zoom up over toward the bay bridge with if earlier crash did clear at treasure island that was in time for the traffic to move smoothly. but it's sticking around. the slowdown at the incline continues up toward the tunnel and witness you get past the tower everything smooths out but this has to ripple back as far as the recovery. we'll look at the toll plaza buzz the metering lights looks like they are on and that is backing up folks here. they may be turned off later on. once they're on they typically don't turn off. back to you guys. just crying and screaming. >> many people last night came out to a candlelight vigil at the french consulate. and you can see behind me back here live that they're showing the french colors to show their support. also we hear there will be another candlelight vigil at city hall this weekend. reporting live, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >. thank you very much. facebook activated its safety check feature after that attack. the tool allows users who might have been in the area to let their friends and family know that they're safe. this is the third time in a little more than a month that the company has had to activate the tool. it was used during the orlando nightclub shooting and also at the istanbul airport attack. we're going back out live to nice right now. that of course is the truck that white panelled truck that was used as a murder weapon essentially as the truck driver drove it down the promenade in

construction. the cause of the fire is under investigation. happening now, nearly 16 hours later and a busy roadway in east san jose is still shut down after a gas leak there. the leak is now capped but crews are still working on alum rock avenue. "today in the bay" damian trujillo is live at the scene. what's the hold up here? >> it's hard to tell what took them so long to cap this leak. they're still making repairs here. they did open the westbound lanes of alum rock avenue about half hour ago. but the eastbound lanes still remain closed here on the east side of the san jose. lots of headaches for the local merchants and residents here. fire crews were on stand by. no one was evacuated but nearby apartment complexes were ordered to shelter in place and that lasted most of the afternoon and night last night. the alum rock avenue exit off of

northbound highway 680 also remains closed right now. the chp is estimating they will reopen the off-ramp at 7:00 a.m. pg&e tells us this morning cruises have stopped the flow of gas but they will remain here throughout the morning to make repairs. the other concern overnight was a demographics of the people who live near the gas leak. >> out here there is two apartment -- two senior living complexes and one apartment complex. they are effected if we're telling them to shelter in place, stay in their home, close their windows and doors and stay in there. >> reporter: again, that shelter in place has been lifted. this part of the area where vta has spent the last year making way for an express bus lane. but again, this leak was caused by pg&e crews performing routine maintenance on this line here on alum rock avenue. again, the westbound lanes are now open as of about 35 minutes ago. but the eastbound lanes remain

closed. we're live in san jose, i'm damian trujillo. a live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. and in spite of extra costs, officials say they are going to move forward with the plan to install suicide nets. originally the nets were estimated to cost $76 million. that's what they were budgeted for the two bids are way above that. the low bid came in at $142 million. the high bid was $174 million. bridge officials say installation could be delayed but they are still moving forward with that plan. last year 33 people ended their lives by jumping off of the golden gate bridge. now let's take a look at that microclimate forecast. here's kari hall. >> we start out this morning with a nice cool feel to the air with some mostly clear skies. with some low clouds starting to roll in across the beach and the coastal areas. in san francisco now, 54 degrees. today's highs will be not as hot as yesterday but still pretty warm. we're still talking about 90s in

fairfield, concord, livermore, as well as morgan hill. 70s and 80s through the inner bay and san francisco today up to 66 degrees. santa rosa will be topping out at 85. i'll talk about the rest of the forecast for the weekend coming up in ten minutes. heading over to mike now with a look at what's happening out there on the roadways. >> we have our second crash 09 morning on the bay bridge. we'll talk about that. first of all, show the majority of our viewers a smooth flow of traffic. it's friday. lighter traffic flow. on the peninsula, a car did go off highway 101 off holly street. checking out injuries but it is off the freeway, shore way, i think. we'll check that. the freeway is okay there. here, big slow down as we look at your live camera. second crash in the treasure island tunnel. backed up all of the way into the toll plaza. they are the pl metering lights. they're not on. hope to have that lane cleared soon. b.a.r.t. riders who use the fremont line are going to have to deal with weekend closures starting tonight. that closure is going to impact the last two stations of the fremont line. the union city and fremont

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. despite all the reports and confirmation trump says he still has not made up his mind, but has he? >> well, we don't really know. our sources tell us trump was quite irritated when those reports started coming out that he had, in fact, chosen mike pence and it seemed to make a lot of sense since he was on a private jet and spent the night at the trump golf course in new jersey -- or in new york and is in new york today when the announcement was supposed to be made. but then trump did an interview saying he had not made a final decision. then his top adviser paul

the company line did incredibly well in its debut. biggest tech ipo of the year. out of korea. trades on the nyse and tokyo stock exchange. they make chat software that's popular in asia. the previous record holder was mountain view's twilio. they both did really well but twilio raised $100 million in the ipo. line on the left, more than a billion. the s&p 500 said another record yesterday. our landon dowdy points out the s&p has not had a perfect 5 for 5 week since 1998. it's unlikely to get it this week either. futures are lower after this terror attack in france. facebook released the latest diversity report showing it has not been able to make big strides. only one in 100 facebook engineers are black, for instance. and that's been true year after year. no improvement. facebook has put more women in senior management. there are some silver lining here.

a problem. all right. >> thank you. california refineries may soon face tighter regulations as a result -- direct result of a fire four years ago at the chevron refinery in richmond. that fire and chemical release send thousands of people to the hospital because of respiratory concerns. investigators say it was triggered by a leaky pipe. it has taken four years but state regulators yesterday announce a new set of regulations they believe will strengthen workplace and environmental safety at refineries not just in richmond but across the state. it is also hope that the regulations will protect surrounding communities better as well. state agencies now have 45 days to sign off on that plan. a plan to ease traffic on the richmond/san rafael bridge is moving forward. light traffic flow at the bridge. pretty soon a third eastbound lane could be a reality. that plan has been formally submitted to caltrans. that means the construction could start as soon as october with an estimated opening of

bomb scare yesterday at a north bay rv park. the false alarm forced evacuations and authorities briefly considered closing lanes alock highway 101. the press democrat reports the whole thing started when firefighters responded to a small gascon nectar fire and had to enter a nearby home. one firefighter apparently saw an alarm clock on a window seal that was made to look like sticks of dynamite. meaning a real alarm clock triggered the false alarm. authorities have an all clear about an hour later. coming up, a thrilling ride is leading to a hefty lawsuit. accusations from a woman who said she was hurt on the l.a. skyscraper slide. but first, happening right now we continue to follow breaking news out of france after an attack left 84 people dead including a father and son from texas. we're tweeting out updates as nbc news breaks new details throughout the morning. a recall alert to check under your sink for varieties of liquid plumr. do you have any of that?
