thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. we're smooth in the traffic department. weather is looking nice. >> yeah. it's looking like a great start to the week. when you talk about cooler temperatures, a lot of people get excited. cooler, also, along the coastal areas as well. as we get a live look outside, all of our microclimate showing temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. not bad. it's 53 in the north bay. all though you have to watch out for the low clouds and fog. it will be up to 76 degrees once it clears out. 83 degrees in the south bay and san francisco stays at 65 degrees with some breezy. we'll let you know what to expect as we go through the week. that's coming up in a few minutes. heading over to mike. it looks like a nice drive. >> pretty good. and the low clouds chp not reporting any problems for drivers. we have an issue getting in toward fremont on 680 southbound. there is a crash reported as you

head south down toward veargus. a smooth drive down toward mission. coming into the area we're look at dublin. folks coming off the 580 heading toward 680 maybe cutting through highway 84. no problems now. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. to devastating news for the family of a missing uk berkeley student. their fears were concerned. 20-year-old nick leslie is among the dead in last week's nice terror attack in france. "today in the bay" is live with more. it comes after another real tragedy for the student body, bob. >> reporter: good morning. sadly nick leslie is the second cal student to have been killed in a terrorist attack this month. you might recall can ree she jane who was killed early july in an attack in bangladesh.

leslie was killed thursday when a man drove a large truck through a crowd of thousands of people celebrating bastille day. leslie is from delmar, 20 years old, environmental sciences major. in france because of a four-week study abroad program. one of his friends posted on facebook that leslie was the happiest person he knew. initially leslie's class mates thought he avoided the truck. his family searched local hospitals hoping he was being treated. yesterday came confirmation he had been killed. three other krcal students were hurt during the rampage. two have since been released from the hospital. a third being treated for a broken leg. there will be a vigil today at 4:30 for nick leslie killed during the nice terror attack.

>> thank you, bob. there are new details about the investigation into the truck attack. french police say the suspect was picked up on closed circuit tv at least two separate times before the attack in the same truck, apparently scouting out the future route in advance. authorities also took another man and woman into custody for questioning. both are acquaintances of the suspect. east bay officer and police dog are recovering this morning after a wild police chase saturday night. you're about to look at video and aftermath in walnut creek. two smashed cars including a police cruiser. once police caught up with the suspect they say the suspect rammed the patrol car. police used taserers, a police dog, and a bean bag to catch the suspect. officers did eventually arrest him but not before he stabbed a canine several times. one officer was hurt and expected to recover.

police identified the driver as 33-year-old gonzalez of walnut creek. he's in the hospital facing felony charges. the name of the dog is shana. here is a picture of her at a fund-raiser last year. it was at pet food express in walnut creek. shana and her handler do demonstrations for a nonprofit called cover your canine. she's expected to make a full recovery. to the developing story. emotions and tensions are high across the country as we remember three law enforcement officers killed in what police are calling an ambush in baton rouge. the country is asking where do we two from here?

jay gray is reporting. >> reporter: it unfolded here. a rolling gun battle that started here in the car wash spill into the parking lot of a convenience store behind us. a federal agents and police continue to search for evidence and answers. this morning we're learning more about the victim and the suspect that police say carried out this deadly attack. [ sirens. >> reporter: as the shots exploded sunday morning in baton rouge -- >> shots fired. officer down. officer down. got a city officer down. shots fired. >> reporter: three officers were killed. montrell jackson, matthew gerald, and brad garafola all three husbands, fathers. three more officers were wounded during the attack. one still in critical condition. officials of louisiana called it an ambush carried out, police say, by a lone gunman gavin eugene on his birthday. >> it's unjustified. it's unjustifiable.

the violence, the hatred has to stop. >> reporter: overnight we learned long had an extensive footprint online using the name cosmo setepenra. describing himself as a freedom strategies, author, and spiritual advisor. long was in dallas days after five police officers were assassinated by a sniper. sterling made an emotional plea for peace hours after the spree. >> at the end of the day these people call their families and tell them their daddies aren't coming home. i know how they feel because i got the same phone call. >> reporter: the call echoed the second time in two weeks across the city and nation mourning the

>> such a heart-warming applause. an ovation for betty who received another presidential coin yesterday during a ceremony. you'll remember that coin was stolen from the 94-year-old ranger last month. she was beaten up inside her home during a burglary and the coin was stolen. she explains why the first coin meant so much when the first awarded it. >> when i was introduced to the president i put out my hand to shake his and he had cupped in his palm the presidential coin. he handed it to me in secret. it made it even more powerful. nobody knew he had done that. and it was that memory of his move as if he knew that i would have appreciated that more than having it done publicly. >> even after the attack, she was determined to get back to work quickly.

decision 2016. a live look at cleveland, ohio. this morning ahead of the gop convention, which is set to start in just a couple of hours. >> after yesterday's police shootings in louisiana, there's an even bigger focus on security there this morning. "today in the bay" tracy pots is inside the secure stozone. do you feel a difference in security? this isn't your first convention. >> reporter: there seems to be a lot of it. it's amazing when you walk up and see the big steel gates. you don't always see that. but there has been a lot of concern about the demonstrations and the tone surrounding this convention. they're going to be talking security on the inside and certainly on the outside, if the thousands of officers try to

protect 50,000 visitors to cleveland. >> nearly 4 miles of steel fencing surround the convention site. after sunday's shooting in louisiana, cleveland's police union wants governor kasich to temporarily suspend ohio's open carry gun law downtown to protect more than 5,000 officers. kasich says he can't. >> it makes sense. it's common sense. we're not trying to, you know, take away anybody's rights. >> reporter: protests have been peaceful. >> we're not going to tolerate violence of any kind. >> reporter: in an interview with "65 minutes" donald trump suggested they leave their guns at home. >> i have great confidence in law enforcement. >> reporter: president obama calling for calm. >> everyone right now focus on words and actions that can unite this country rather than divide it further. >> the great state of new mexico. >> reporter: inside last-minute

an appearance here today. back to you guys. >> thank you very much, tracie. now to the rio olympics. we'll find out whether the russian athletes will be banned from competing. anti-doping agencies are preparing to request that the entire russian team be barred from the games. they're waiting for the results for the investigation into claims of a state-sponsored doping program conducted by russian officials a the 2014 so kyi olympics. that report is expected later today less than three weeks before the start of the games in rio. and we're now 18 days away from the opening ceremony. our own jessica will be there covering the games for us. >> chris, when it comes to sc e scoring, the national football league is ready to go high-tech. field goals in the nfl are just too easy. now the nfl may be getting ready toy narrow the goal posts.

morning to a soft bank, that's the name of it. a japanese company for $32 billion. arm is, or was, great britain's most important high-tech company. it's now going to be a japanese company. spacex made another successful launch of the "falcon 1" rocket a few hours ago. on the way to the international space station carrying supplies. now, to be honest, the launches have become a bit routine. i will acknowledge that. but what is not routine is this. the landing of the first. look at that. they did it on dry land this time. the rocket launched perfect. much steadier, clearer shot than we were able to going from the sea barges. later this fall spacex is going to relaunch one of the first stages for the first time. let's take a look at stocks. landon dowdy, good morning.

>> hi. good morning. wall street looks to add to last week's gains. futures are higher this morning. markets rising for the third straight week as the brexit fears fade and positive earnsings report. dow closing at record high on friday. lots of earnings this week starting today with bank of america, ibm, netflix as well as ya hoop. the dow rising 10 points friday. the nasdaq slipping 4 to 5029. >> thank you. speaking of yahoo!. we expect today yahoo! will take its final bid. sometime after that no more yahoo! as an independent company. yahoo! will report, as landon said, the profits this afternoon probably for the last time. i don't want to get too maudlin. but we're at the end of an era of yahoo!. the end of yahoo! itself is as an independent company. it used to be the most important internet company in silicon valley 20 years ago. the coolest, most influential website on the internet. it's never been the same since.

weekend. it felt nice inland but cool along the coastline. you can expect the same thing today. as we take a live look outside over the south bay. we'll start to see some mostly cloudy skies. the sun trying to come through with the breaks we have. as we go into the rest of the day, the clouds clearing out for most areas except along the coast and in san francisco today. so as we get a live look outside there. now it is 59 degrees with a high today up to 78 degrees. looking at san francisco now 59 degrees. low clouds and there may be mists and drizzle in spots. in oakland today, as we go into the afternoon, starting out this morning 59 degrees at 8:00. some peaks of sunshin -peeks of sunshine. loss combat toes today up to 85. half-moon bay is 63 degrees.

as we look at the overall pattern, there's an area of low pressure farther to the north of us bringing in a nice onshore flow. it keeps the clouds near the coast. as we go into the late week and early parts of the weekend, our heat continues to build. and by sunday we'll see the highs reaching into the 90s. look at san francisco for the seven-day forecast. mostly 60s through the week but hitting 70 by the end of the week. compare that to 94 degrees by the end of the weekend. for the valley, yes, it's going to be getting much hotter. especially away from the coastline. mike said there's a tree down that may affect the trivalley. >> yeah. you might want to take 680. look at the speed sensors. fine on the freeways now. we'll see a little back up. over here the concern is there there's a tree down across the road. and some folks use draft as a an alternate to 680.

a rare mountain lion citing. neighbors spotted it in san mateo. police quickly scoped out the area but didn't find the animal. someone managed to take a picture before police ordered a shelter in place. it was spott ete eted up the st from are a high school. at least it wasn't jaywalking. >> not your average cat roaming the streets. >> hoping to make the lab rat a things of the past. scientists are testing out technology that replicates vital human tissues on microchips.

financial guidance while you're mastering life. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. >> i'm sam brock. no summer heat to speak of this morning. really nice start to the weekend. >> it is going to be a great start to the week. a couple of days of some cooler than average temperatures, and then it starts to get hot in time for the weekend, once again. as we get a look outside all of our microclimate showing temperatures now in the mid to upper 50s as you step out the door. we have seen low clouds and fog and mist in spots, but other than that no major problems. a lot of sunshine throughout the day. 65 in san francisco, 75 in the peninsula, and 83 degrees in the south bay. i'll let you know what else to

berkeley's campus to honor the life of the student killed in last week's terror attack in france. "today in the bay" joins us with reaction to the tragedy. leslie's friends and family were in limbo for days whether or not he was dead or alive. >> because one of his class mates in nice, france, thought he avoided that truck. yesterday came the terrible news that nick leslie, a student here at cal, had been killed in the nice terror attack. it's been devastating for his friends and family here at the uc campus in berkeley. his family hopes he had perhaps been in the hospital being treated for injuries and haven't been able to alert his family. his father planned a trip to fans to look for his son. then came confirmation that he was one of the 84 killed when a man drove a large truck through a crowd celebrating bastille day. leslie was from delmar and an

environmental sciences major. he was in france as a four week study abroad program with 84 other cal students. he was described as talented and kind. he's the second cal student to be killed by a terrorist this month. >> the fact they have to get, like, caught in the events that don't have anything to do with them is tragic. >> reporter: three berkeley students were injured in the nice attack. two have been released from the hospital. a third is being treated for a broken leg. there will be a vigil today at 4:30 this afternoon to remember their fellow student nick leslie. >> bob, thank you. mourning in berkeley and texas as well. mourners held a candle light vigil for an american father and his son killed in the nice truck

rampage. dozens gathered to remember 51-year-old sean cope land and his 11-year-old son brodie. they tied red and black ribbons around trees as a sign of love and support. a developing story in louisiana. these are the faces of the three officers gunned down and what is being described as an ambush. baton rouge police officer on the left, montrell jackson, is a new father. his baby not even a year old. fellow officer matthew gerald new to the force and married with two children. on the right brad garafola, a father of four. this area of east baton rouge is locked downright now, as we speak. police and federal agents looking for evidence in this case. officials in louisiana have called situation an ambush. protests and tensions have been building in baton rouge for almost two weeks after the shooting death of alton sterling by police. sterling's family made an

emotional plea for peace hours after the killing spree. >> at the end of the day these people call their families and tell them their daddies aren't coming home. i know how they feel because i got the same phone call. >> reporter: the call echoed the second time in two weeks across the city and nation mourning the loss of those who wear a badge. >> the shooter has been identified as gavin long. he lived in kansas city, missouri. it does not appear he had any links to baton rouge. he may have been stolen rental car. he had a social immediamedia ac and he described him as a life coach, nutritionist, advisor. while in the marines he was a data network specialist. he served an eight month tour in

iraq in 2008. the string of attacks on law enforcement is leaving officers across the country on edge now. several bay area agencies are starting to prepare for the worst. "today in the bay" is live ata clara sheriff's department with how deputies are responding to the latest tragedy. over the weekend in talking with law enforcement officers, they're feeling the pressure here. >> reporter: absolutely. the real question this morning that is lingering since yesterday is could these ambushes happen here? some deputies are worried that copy cat crimes could become the norm. yesterday's shooting in baton rouge left three officers dead and less than two weeks after the dallas shoots, which left five officers dead. sheriff's departments are asking to patrol in teams of two. >> some of members have asked for it. it absolutely when they see what is going on in the nation and one of the ways to try to mitigate ambush tacks is to have two people that another set of

eyes one concentrating on driving. one konsing on look -- concentrating on what is going on around us. >> reporter: san jose police officer association issued a statement taking a different tone and calling for action to keep officers say. writing in part, it's past time for our political leaders to step up and support law enforcement with the necessary staffing and equipment to keep our neighborhoods safe. we don't need anymore statements of condemnation of heinous acts or pledges of remorse for the latest murders. we need action. this morning the hiring signs up at the santa clara county's sheriff's office. it has a 30% vacancy at the moment. several other police departments in the bay area also say they're severely understaffed. live in san jose, "today in the bay." >> unnerving time. thank you very much. a follow up now. investigators say they have identified almost two dozen people suspected of serious

crimes after violence broke out during a donald trump rally in san jose. protesters were throwing punches and even threw eggs at trump supporters outside of the san jose convention center last month. a special task force assigned to sort out the chaos spent weeks combing through hundreds of cell phone videos and social media profiles. they identified 46 assaults and 22 different assailant. of the suspects, 20 have been contacted or arrested. a san jose police are investigating a homicide in the area of japantown. it happened around 9:00 yesterday morning on north first street. about a half mile away from police headquarters to give you the perspective there. officers found a man dead with at least one stab wound. they're not releasing a lot of other information at this point. this is the city's 27th homicide of the year. it is almost double what it was last year. a man drowned early saturday on the peninsula.

it happened in san mateo county. authorities say a 34-year-old man from san jose was visiting there with friends when he was knocked by a wave and pulled into the water. firefighters pulled him from the water and they could not revive him. more tragedy now. a vacation took a terrible turn for a berkeley family this weekend. the family was visiting hawaii when a 6-year-old girl and her father were swept out to sea. the father was trying to rescue his daughter off a tide pool. the two were pulled from the water by first responders, given cpr, and rushed to the hospital but neither one survived. there have been several deadly or near-deadly accidents at the same spot in recent years. >> so sad. switching gears now we'll get to kari hall. a nice forecast for this monday. >> yeah. we'll have great weather as we head into the day. and we start out now with comfortable temperatures as you head out the door. mostly in the mid to upper 50s. 55 in knanapa.

security is extra tight in cleveland today at the gop convention kicks off in a matter of hours. a live look right now at quicken loans arena from the outside where lebron james and the rest of the cavaliers, that's their stomping grounds there. presumably far away. but it is where presumptive nominee donald trump will be accepting his party's nomination later this week. security forces have put up nearly four miles of steel fencing. security is even more rock solid than what was originally planned.

cleveland's police union asked ohio governor john kasich so temporarily suspend ohio's open carry gun law. kasich said he can't do that. >> it makes sense. it's common sense. we're not trying to, you know, take away anybody's rights. >> reporter: protests have been peaceful. cleave land's police chief said violence of any kind at the rnc will not be tolerated. many bay area republicans are in cleveland this morning. hillary is president of the san francisco young republicans, and is headed to the republican national convention as an alternate delegate. she says, like many others, her biggest concern is security. >> security risk is on my mind. whether it's domestic protesters with different organizations or someone from isis. so it's going to be tense but

i'm confident in the police departmen department. >> protests have begun, in fact. 123 permits were granted to demonstrators to be inside the event zone. >> that's the background on security. now to the latest polls. the convention starting today. the latest numbers are out on who is leading in the race for the white house. a new nbc news wall street journal poll surveyed a thousand registered voters this past week and found hillary clinton is ahead of republican candidate donald trump 46% to 41% which is virtually unchanged from a month ago. another new poll shows plenty of certainty within the republican party. just 13% of republicans see their party as unified. only 38% say they're satisfied with trump as the party selection. >> donald trump appears to be shifting on his proposed temporary ban on muslims. he's now saying only muslims from nations accused of supporting terror will not be allowed into the u.s.

trump speaking about his policy last nights in an interview with "60 minutes" along with his vice presidential pick, mike pence. donald trump continues the call for extreme vetting of muslims who want to enter the u.s. and he said syrian refugees will be denied. trump's initial proposal called for, quote, total and complete shut down until the country's representatives can figure out what is going on. turmoil overseas and new details on the deadly attempted coup in turkey last week. thousands are now behind bars accused of being cospear or its in that coup. this weekend the democratically elected president erdogan helped to carry a coffin at a funeral for his campaign manager among the 200 peopled. more than 6,000 alleged spear or its have been detained.

the pokemon app doesn't use that much data. t-mobile is making what i'm sure it considers to be a nice gesture. t-mobile parents appreciate it. it goes to the heart of the net neutrality. t-mobile, at&t, comcast, whatever deciding when to charge for data and when not to, they giving preference to one app over another app. and that means if you're an app developer, you are at a disadvantage. this is a clear of why we want all data to be treated equally on cell phones, on the internet, what have you. >> the competitors crying foul on this? >> not necessarily. i think it goes to the heart of you and i create an app to compete with pokemon app. now we're that much more not able to compete because t-mobile has decided we won't be able to compete. >> it's meant to be a cute little throw you a bone.

and in livermore today we're now at 58 degrees. the high temperature up to 80 degrees. but then as we look at the trend throughout the morning, lunchtime 61. so still nice and cool. we'll be up to 69 degrees by the middle of the afternoon. once again eventually hitting the low 80s there. it will be up to 78 degrees in san jose. half-moon bay 63 degrees. and 60 in the mission district. 82 in the tryh valley. oakland up to 82. santa rosa a high of 76. what is going on here? we have a area of low pressure farther to the north. it's giving a nice onshore flow and mostly coastal clouds. the heat will continue to build as we go toward the end of the week and into the weekend. here is the way it shapes up over the next seven days in san francisco. mainly 60 throughout the week. 70 by the end of the weekend. compare it to 94 degrees. that's with a we will have in parts of the valley. so we'll be watching out for the building trend for the temperatures throughout the week. heading over to mike now, a new

war veteran today. retired army lieutenant colonel charles kettle from michigan will be honored at the white house. the colonel kettles lead a platoon of helicopters to evacuate those injured after an ambush. he returned several times to rescue troops pinned down by enemy fire. he's credited with saving the lives of 40 soldiers and four crew members. to the rio olympics. we could find out today whether or not all russian athletes will be banned from competing at the games in brazil. anti-doping agencies are preparing to request that the entire russian team be barred from the games. they're waiting for the results for the investigation into claims of a state-sponsored doping program conducted by russian officials a the 2014 so -- sochi olympics. that report is expected later today less than three weeks
