>> the controversy overshadowing donald trump's rock star arrival in cleveland. what donald trump is saying about it today, tuesday july 19th, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news this is a special edition of "today" at the republican national convention with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from cleveland. >> good morning, everybody. welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. here we are. day two of the convention. we're right here on the floor of the quicken loans arena. >> no surprises. we're talking about the speech that melania trump delivered to this convention last night. we knew we would do that on tuesday morning. what we didn't realize is we would talk about a couple portions of that speech lifted almost word for word from a speech that michelle obama delivered back in 2008. >> mrs. trump said it wouldn't be a campaign without drama and

excitement but this is probably not what they had in mind. >> here to break it down is peter alexander across from us at the q. peter, good morning to you. >> i was on the convention floor last night as melania trump delivered that speech. it was widely praised when she wrapped it up but less than an hour later, the conversation quickly turned. it was first picked up on twitter and the focus went from being on a supermodel poise to questions of possible plagiarism. with a dramatic entrance made for tv, the billionaire showman, donald trump, introducing his wife to the republican faithful for her eagerly anticipated prime time speech but the would-be first couple's debut overshadowed about similarities about melania trump's remarks and michelle obama's remarks at the 2008 democratic convention. >> from a young age my parents impressed on me the values that you work hard for what you want in life.

that's all. i wrote it with a little help as possible. >> reporter: overnight donald trump ignoring the controversy tweeting her speech and demeanor were incredible. very proud. the campaign later releasing a statement but ducking questions about plagiarism. melania's team of writers took notes on her life's inspirations and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking. on the floor donald trump jr. giving his stepmother a glowing review. >> it was surreal. we don't get that emotional that easily. >> reporter: on opening night a fiery lineup of speeches with rudy giuliani letting loose. >> i'm sick and tired of the defamation of donald trump by the media and by the clinton campaign. >> reporter: many speakers sharing a common target, hillary

clinton. >> that's right. lock her up. >> reporter: including an emotional appearance by the mother of an american killed in benghazi. >> i blame hillary clinton personally for the death of my son. personally. >> reporter: the prime time event punctuating a chaotic opening day. the rnc and trump's allies steam rolling an anti-trump uprising here. the colorado delegation walked off the floor as supporters of the never trump faction wanted a roll call on convention rules. a vote they were bound to lose but would give them an opportunity to register their dissatisfaction. >> they just blatantly violated their own rules and you saw a lot of people upset. >> reporter: and the trump campaign accused of plagiarism. "michelle's head speechwriter used to be hillary clinton's so the trump campaign plagiarized from the hillary speech writer."

the campaign manager for donald trump is defending melania trump it saying these were common words and values and she cares about her family. matt and savannah? >> all right, peter. thank you very much. >> let's chew this over with nicole wallace and mike murphy, republicans both of them, with us at the table. let's keep this in perspective. it's not watergate. there's no evidence that she herself a responsible for any plagiarism. what does this signal about the campaign? what do you think this does to the convention? >> if you look at the first 24 hours, the opening move was a war with the governor of ohio who is hosting the convention followed by the colorado steam roller and tough tactics on the floor and then into the speech writing team. a very bad first day. what counts in this convention is trump's speech later. that's the big movement. if they do good, it will help

them. if not, they could be in trouble. >> let's talk about what paul m mannafore said. >> you never subject a spouse to that. you get a spouse in and out of political controversy as quickly as possible because a spouse is large ll lly immune from partis attacks that come at a political figure. people root for a wife or kid of a politician. they're going to guarantee that the campaign spends all day talking about whether or not she plagiarized michelle obama's speech which it looks like she did. >> any doubt in your mind it was plagiarized? >> no doubt in my mind whoever put those words on that piece of paper was aware of what michelle obama said. >> similar stories but it looked

like someone read that text and it stuck. >> there was a lot of red meat for the base. is it good strategy? >> chuck todd called it raw red meat. it was fiery stuff.incredibly u. there was wrenching moment that's had people in the room wiping their tears. there were some, you know, really compelling stories. the lone survivor gave a great speech. but it was also marked with some really across the line rhetoric. so i'm not sure yet. i don't think we'll know until the convention ends how it was received in america's living room. >> let me let you weigh in on that and then we'll ask you about the floor fight yesterday. >> the problem with last night is we need a horn to blow and explain the primary is over. we're still doing primary raw meat which is great for the 41% we get for free and lose w we need the convention to expand the party. i'm not seeing that yet. >> colorado delegation walks out. they wanted that role call vote

on voting your conscience. they didn't get it. they lose. they did get attention because of it s that the last gasp of the never trump movement? or do they have other opportunities? >> they have other optic opportunities. there is no real rules opportunity to do anything meaningful. i mean they lost that fight. but they still have the power to do some disruption because the truth is this is the most down beat convention i've been to for a long time. there is not a lot of delegate excitement among half of the delegates for trump. >> what grade do you give the entrance? >> i'm sorry, a plus. i have never seen anything like that before. >> i think david copperfield is going to sue. a little too vegas for me. >> that was here in the convention. the entrance at the airport wasn't tshabby either. we spoke to the trumps when they arrived in cleerld. we were hoping to get a quick interview them on the tarmac. instead, mr. trump invited us on to the plane where we talked about a number of things including his wife's speech. >> welcome to cleveland. >> thank you very much. >> i can be the first to welcome

you? >> you can. indeed. >> is it surreal to finally be here? we talked about this week for so long. >> i think it's just a great feeling. it's a great accomplishment. the real accomplishment is make america great again. that's what i'm doing it for. >> the xwe on adoption of the o. >> already there's been a couple contentious moments. i know you heard about this. an entire delegation walked out over a vote they wanted and didn't get it. what's your reaction to it? >> it wasn't a vote about me. that was about changing rules in the year 2020. >> they wanted rules changed now but it wouldn't have taken place until 2020. >> we got more votes than anybody in the history of the republican party. it's never happened like this. and i think the press like to build it up. it well was about rules changes for 2020. >> so much violence in the country in the last couple weeks. people are on edge. they're tense. you add to that the passion that comes with political debate and there are people who are truly

afraid that things could boil over here in cleveland. would you be willing to make a pledge to speak to everyone involved in this convention and say please tone down the rhetoric? >> sure. i think it's going to be toned down and i think it will be great rhetoric. also law and order. we need law and order in the country. >> can you say to the people who will take to the podium this week no personal attacks, keep it civil? >> i think to a large extent it is a convention after all. when you say civil, we can't be too civil when you have a situation like hillary clinton with all that she's done and all of the mistakes that she's made. they'll be brought up. i think it will be very civil. >> i watched your interview on "60 minutes" with your running mate governor mike pence. one thing that came up was his vote of support of the iraq war. you said everyone is entitled to make a mistake. you've been hammering secretary

clinton on that vote for better part of a year. >> she makes too many mistakes. she's wrong on the war. she's wrong on syria. she's wrong on libya. she's got bad judgment. bernie sanders said she suffers from bad judgment. she also suffers from bad instincts. >> your campaign adviser picked a fight with the governor of this state. he criticized governor kasich for not showing up at this convention and supporting you. and paul said he's embarrassing the state of ohio. do you agree? >> look, he signed a pledge, number one. honestly, he got beaten so badly. i won 37 states. even more than that. and he won one. if i got beaten that badly, i wouldn't show up either. he doesn't have to show up. it's fine. >> do you want to pick a fight with a popular governor of a state like ohio in the early

stages of this election. >> he may not be popular after the convention. >> is he embarrassing the state of ohio by not showing up. >> i love ohio. >> what do you want to come out of this week? you get to start it off tonight, mrs. trump. what are you hoping for? what would be a success for you? >> we want security and safety for all americans and people around the world. what is going on now is not acceptable. we need love and compassion and kindness to bring us all together. >> again, that was the trumps yesterday just moments after they touched down here at the airport in cleveland. just ahead, we'll get governor chris christie's take on all of this when he joins us live and you can catch prime time coverage from the convention tonight at 10:00 eastern, 7:00 pacific time here on nbc. >> breaking with tradition, hillary clinton was on the campaign trail on monday. normally candidates lie low during the other party's convention but clinton held an event at the university of cincinnati just down the road from here with a potential

running mate senator brown. during her speech, clinton spoke about donald trump and importance of voter registration saying going to the polls is the only way to stop this divisive candidate from getting within 1,000 miles of the white house. another huge story this morning. the international olympic committee holding emergency talks over a bombshell report on rampant state-run doping on the part of russia during the sochi games. the fate of hundreds of athletes hanging in the balance. bill neely has more on that story. bill, >> good morning, matt. this may be the biggest doping scandal in sports history. if you read it, you might not believe it. disguised russian agents swapping drug samples at night. directed by the sports minister. this report say bombshell. russia faces an olympic ban. it all started with failure.

samples were passed through and emptied and replaced with clean samples. russia's president putin implied the u.s. had directed the independent report. one state he said is dictating its will. the olympic movement could find itself on the brink of division. katy ulander lost out by .400. >> the fact the system is taking a stand and doing something makes me proud and even more motivated to continue doing what i'm doing. >> reporter: the rio games are 17 days away. the international olympic committee has promised the toughest sanctioning available. that could mean a total russian ban. and that committee is meeting right now. we may get a decision shortly. the cheating covered 30 sports. so it is very hard to see how a russian ban from rio will be

back now. 7:30 on a tuesday morning. the 19th of july, 2016. a look inside the q in cleveland, the home of the republican national convention this week. >> let's set the scene here. we're inside the quicken loans arena. matt calls it the q because he thinks this town is cool. the home of the cleveland cavaliers, champion cleveland cavaliers and day two of the convention. today's theme, make america work again. republicans offering their vision of how to create jobs and boost the economy. >> there are some big names among the speakers tonight. house speaker paul ryan is here. also new jersey governor chris christie. we're going to talk to governor christie exclusively in just a couple minutes. also addressing the delegates tonight, two of donald trump's children.

about the staff work of the campaign and the fact that something like this might slip through the cracks? >> i don't know. i think they're trying to do a lot of things at one time. i know melania. i think she worked very hard on that speech. a lot of what i heard sitting on the floor sounded very much like her and the way she speaks about donald all the time. having been friends with them for 14 years, that sounded like her to me last night and what's most important to the american people get the picture of how she feels about her husband and what their relationship is like. i think they got a view of that last night. >> you were the keynote speaker at the republican convention four years ago. tonight i know you had hoped to be here in a different role, perhaps as running mate for donald trump. so much has been written, governor, since you were not chosen. some of the articles say you livid at not being chosen. and some articles say you were angry.

what's the truth? >> truth is that i never expected to be chosen. fact is that over the course of my 14-year relationship with donald, he knows i'm going to be there for him. he's been there for me over the course of our relationship and so, listen, matt, i don't want to sugar coat it. you're disappointed if you compete for something like i did, you would like be picked. you wake up the next morning and get on with your day. >> articles written say it was less about whether you would have made a great pairing and more personal that there was a conflict with you inside the trump family with jared kuschner. that true? >> i never had any conflict with jared inside the campaign. our relationship has been really good professionally. and warm personally. as it is with all of donald's children and me over the years. i understand it's a shakespearean thing to write about. it's not been my experience since i endorsed donald at the end of february. >> we want to talk about your speech tonight and what you have planned. there's been a lot of conflicting reports about the timing that mike pence got the call on wednesday night but on

thursday morning as i understand it, you were still under the impression that you were in the running and taking calls from trump himself. was there that confusion? did he mislead you and make you feel you were still in the running? >> i was never confused about anything. when donald made his choice official on friday morning, he had spoken to me and i completely understood the choice that he made. i support mike. we've been governors together. i campaigned hard for him in 2012. i'm happy that donald picked the governor. him having a governing partner is important. if it's not me, i'm glad -- i was not under any confusion about what happened between me and donald. we understood each other perfectly as we usually do. >> when you take to the podium tonight, will you speak as former candidate? will you speak as governor of new jersey? speaking as a former prosecutor? which one is going to come out? >> yes. >> which will take most of the

time? >> i think what you'll see tonight is somebody that has experience in a courtroom and knows how to make a case. i will make the case. i will wait until tonight to make the case that donald trump is ready to be president of the united states and perhaps his opponent is not. >> where will the line be? mostly a pro-trump speech or largely an anti-hillary speech? >> i think you'll have to wait and see for tonight, matt. still doing editing. we'll see where it goes. >> you were up late working on the speech. what do you see as your future? do you think you'll run for public office again? >> i don't know. i don't run for governor again. i'm term limited for governor in new jersey. i would rather commit suicide than be in the united states senate so that prevents me from doing that. that wouldn't be good. i don't think that at this point i don't have plans to run for public office again. you never know where life is going to bring you and certainly i never thought life would bring me to this spot. you don't know where it's going to go.

>> it didn't work out in terms of becoming a running mate. there are other opportunities if donald trump is elected president. there could be an attorney general spot. chief of staff spot. would you want an active role in the trump administration? >> it would depend on what was offered me. if donald won and he offered me something i felt like i could contribute to our country, i would consider taking it. i have two young children at home and uprooting them to washington, d.c. would have to be something that i felt i really could make a contribution, a meaningful contribution to the country. i'm not just looking for a job. i think i'll be able to handle that once i leave the governorship one way or another. >> always good to see you. >> we'll take a turn now. mr. roker has a check of the weather. hey, al. >> good to see you, everybody. this floor is going to be by the end of the convention inundated with 150,000 balloons. where do they keep them? up there in the ceiling. that's right.

talk about hot air. it's not helium. they were filled up by a bunch of volunteers and there's also half a ton of confetti and a disco ball. let's party like it's the '70s. can't wait. let's show you what's going on as far as your weather is concerned especially if you're here in cleveland for the rest of this convention. we're looking really at picture perfect weather. getting kind of toasty toward thursday with a high of 91 degrees. now, we're also looking at some storms developing as warm, humid air moves in through the southeast. showers and thunderstorms develop in the afternoon and the evening hours. again, nothing too horrible. we are also looking at more wet weather through the southeast as that cold front pushes through. that's what's going on around the country. here's what's we are in for another nice day. we start out now in san jose at

good morning to you. 8:26. three contractors went to the hospital after crashing during an early morning chase in the east bay. authorities say it started about 1:30. that's when a suspect held a woman at gunpoint at a parking lot in hayward. shortly after, police say the suspects took off in the woman's car. officers caught up to the driver of the car, sparking a chase that ended in san leandro. it happened near bancroft avenue. police apprehended all three suspects. no update on how badly the suspects were injured. tuesday morning commute with mike. >> getting pretty crowded out on the roadways. calming down, still good crowd out there, north 101. but 280, we'll show you the map. we see a few northbound drive

on the new labels, you'll have serving size written up there boldly and more accurately. so exactly how much of the ice cream. you know, maybe two-thirds of it. it can be different. can you have 20 ounce soda pop or 12 ounce that, is the one serving size. >> okay. >> so they maintain some rational thought here fuchlt drink it, we're going to put it on. there it's not realistic today. it is a lot bolder. >> okay. good. here's another big one. no sugar but the key word is added. no sugar added. >> today you don't know if there is added sugar or not. this is a big problem. >> look at how fancy you are. >> this is your technology. i love it. so look down here. total sugars. you have that today. but they're going to add as a category that says added sugar. first of all, just because there is no added sugar doesn't mean it is okay. can you have lots of fruit that has sugar but added sugar means they put things with nutrients in there and did it to make it taste better. so this is a great addition for

us to know if there is no added sugars. >> side note. do you think people should drink orange juice? people are telling me don't drink it. there is too much sugar. >> i'm worried about orange juice and all fruit drinks. however, a little bit is fine. all day long you're putting in a ton of sugar each time, it doesn't have the fiber that comes with the real fruit. >> reduced fat is low fat. >> this is a big problem for a lot of people. they think if i can have no fat diet, that's 25% less is what this means, you're okay. it doesn't mean that. if you have a really fatty philadelph food and take a quarter of it out doesn't mean it is healthy. but what do they do to get the fat out? that's the issue. they have to put other stuff in. there and best example for me is actually dairy. dairy is fine. when you take the fat out, even though you don't add anything else, you leave yourself with only sugar. so you're ruining your body's to naturally regulate. that is why people don't lose weight with skim milk.

for us? we want to buy a house. we want to get a new car. we want to go on vacation. make a road map to get there. revisit that goal every three months. if big things are taken care of, little ones work out. >> often in relationships one person makes more money than the other and sometimes one of the spouses is working. they feel like they have more power. >> this is bad for the relationship in general if one person is too controlling. both people need to be able to spend some money on their own and also need to have financial responsibility so that they don't feel lost in the relationship. if you're feeling like you don't have the ability to take back some of that power because you're not earning an income, for example, you need to sit down with yourself and a computer and figure out how much you would have to spend to replace all of those things that you do for your family and you will not feel that way anymore. >> what a horrible feeling for anyone to say what did you buy

story would be how well melania trump did on that stage. obviously she's not a politician. she's not lived her life in the public space. here she was on this grand stage at the rnc on the first night delivering her speech and donald trump made a dramatic entrance at the convention last night to "we are the champions" and then introduced his life melaniwife, who gave the most anticipated speech of the night. quickly after melania's speech, social media and others started to raise a few eyebrows about several words in her speech. words that were similar and in fact word for word words found in michelle obama prime time speech at the 2008 democratic convention. here are the comparisons. >> from my young age, my parents impressed on me the value that you work hard for what you want in life, that your work is your

"morning joe" is reporting that donald trump told his staff that the most important speech was his wife's speech. they were assigned someone to help cultivate a speech. what happened after that is anyone's guess. it's likely that donald trump will respond soon. i think it puts the spotlight on the pressure that families of politicians face. suddenly you have become scrutinized the same way that the politician does. >> good point. jenna, it bringing that up, we were just talking about what it must have felt like to be in front of those people just like you and your sister were. we saw a clip of you at the podium. when you're up there before that crowd, what does that feel like? >> we were right out of college. we were 20 years old. we were going to -- i was going to teach. i signed a job commitment here

and i had a dream that my dad lost. i called my sister and i said we have to help dad. not because we're policy gurus, we weren't. we just graduated from college. we spoke about the fact that we loved our dad and what he was like as a father. we got criticized for it. i remember we didn't care because when you grow up in the public eye, which we did, you have really thick skin. we still get terrible tweets about things. we all do. but because we were raised in a way to know what mattered, we didn't care. i remember the person that helped us write the speech, karen hughes, called us afterwards and was so disappointed because what she didn't want was for us to be criticized. >> i can't believe people would think you would make policy speech. you think you would get up there and say we love our dad. >> that's what we did. we were young. i remember being so unbelievably nervous. one thing that we talked about is i had my sister with me. i wasn't alone. and so with criticism, we came

good morning, i'm sam brok, three carjacking suspects are in the hospital this morning after crashing during an early-morning chase in the east bay. authorities say this all started at about 1:30, that's when the suspects held a woman up at gunpoint at a toys "r" us parking lot in hayward. shortly after, police say the suspects took off in that woman's car, that's when officers caught up to the car, sparking a chase that ended in san leandro when the suspect's car crashed. that's the scene and video you're looking at right now. that happened on east 14th street near bancroft avenue. police were able to apprehend all three suspects. so far, there's no update on how badly the suspects were injured. also new this morning, firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a fire that damaged a school fire in vallejo. crews said they were called at
