these united states. >> and it's official. donald trump is the republican nominee for president. we'll have reaction from last night's convention coming up in a live prort from cleveland. welcome to "today in the bay" on this wednesday. thanks for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. welcome to wednesday. welcome to the forecast. >> it's doing to be a niece day. no reason to complain about today. yesterday it was so beautiful with all of that sunshine and a nice breeze to keep those temperatures down. but it does start to warm up a little bit today. so we will talk about that. let's get a live look outside now at all of our microcloi mates. 60 degrees now in the east bay and 50 in the north bay. we will see a spread in our temperatures anywhere from 65 in san francisco and along the coast to 83 degrees in the south bay and the tri-valley. a look ahead to a hot weekend ahead. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike is tracking the distraction along the nimitz freeway. >> along 880. looking at all the freeways have a nice smooth flow of traffic. early slowing right here.

south highway 84 that's coming down through pleasant on the and livermore. the nimitz is the concern not because of any lanes blocked but because of the flashing lights off off the freeway. train track and on the other side, a lot of police activity for what's going on exactly off the freeway you're handling that. we are following breaking news, mike. this out of ek land where there is a standoff still under way. intense police activity near east 12th street and 15th avenue. this call came in at 3:50 this morning. some people inside the home surrendered to police but another suspect is holding them at bay inside. our damian is on the scene with updates as soon as we get them. more breaking news, where people's possessions went up in flames overnight. >> a wave of flames. dozens of storage units destroyed this morning and now firefighters are trying to figure out how it happened. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live with a closer look at the damage left behind there.

bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this fire starting around midnight here at the all-safe storage facility on alameda. some of the units that were destroyed. it's hard to tell what was inside. you had boxes. looks like you had an auto engine, maybe some chair, some tables. you had about six or seven units that were destroyed and some had smoke damage. the fire department tells us when they arrived there were six or seven units involved. then they had ten more showing heavy smoke. smoke pouring out of those units. you can see that they did cut holes in a lot of the doors, the roll-up doors for these units so that smoke could escape. they're still trying to determine the cause of the fire. again, it started at midnight. destroying these units and, again, there was about 25 more units that suffered heavy smoke damage. fortunately no one was hurt when this happened here at the all-safe storage in alameda.

reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news, this time out of the north bay. a fire ripping through a large barn overnight in petaluma. that fire broke out at 2:30 at the dary on chilean valley road. the barn was loaded with hay andal fan andand alfafa. two people in the hospital in serious condition after a rollover crash in san francisco. crews say it happened a little before 10:00 last night. 43nd avenue not far from the legion of honor. so far no word on what might have caused that crash. berkeley police believe a man who reportedly had a rifle near the berkeley marina yesterday is still on the loose. authorities searched the area for most of yesterday afternoon and evening but never found the suspect. shortly after noon police got a call about a man on a pedestrian

overcrossing that appeared to be carrying a rifle and heading to east shore state park. officers shut down roads nearby while they conducted this search. happening later today a trial date could be set for three santa clara correctional deputies accuse of beating an inmate to ded. jerry, rodriguez and matthew far rest has been charged with murdering michael tyree last year. tyree was mentally ill. all three deputies plead not guilty and out for $3.5 million each. two former santa clara deputies are being sued by a south bay woman who claims they roughed her up during a traffic stop. the woman's civil suit is now playing out in federal court. it centers around a traffic stop that quickly got physical. dash cam video shows everything escalated between the two officers and the woman. the woman's hand-made contact with either the deputy's hand or

flashlig flashlight. >> certainly when you saw what the officer did at the end of the tape and you start with the way this citizen contact was initiated, that was a recipe for disaster. >> the woman is reportedly accusing the former deputies of abuse. that suit also calls out the county for improper training. it is 5:05. san francisco man under arrest this morning after allegedly threatening the active police chief on social media. the tweet posted earlier this month calls for tony chaplin's head. police say donahoe againson posted chaplin's picture next to a guillotine. police arrested the 60-year-old for making criminal threats at his home on monday. neighbors say hoganson put swastikas on his window and one neighbor shared a racest note she says he left for her. the chief says the department is taking all threats seriously. >> the kkk was passing out flyers in san francisco. and as you just said, we've had

. yet another kidnapping story out of vallejo. a kaiser employee says she was targeted by two men. hospital's call center employee claims that she was out walking on monday morning when two men in a green minivan tried to lure her into their vehicle. one of the men allege lid started running after the woman but she was able to get away. sanchez knows all too well how serious the situation could have become. she was kidnapped from the streets of vallejo when he was 8 years old but escaped. >> it just saddens me. we share something so -- so hearts wrenching. >> vallejo has had three kidnappings in just the last year. is a-year-old pearl pen son and 57-year-old elvira babb remain missing. feeding off fears the union city woman who didn't want to be identified says someone called her claiming to have her daughter and they would kill her

if she told anyone and didn't pay up. in the meantime the woman's daughter received a call claiming her mother was kidnapped. the mother asked the co-workers to call police while she tried to wire money to mexico. before she could complete the transaction, union city police were able to find the daughter and the mott mother. >> they said we have your daughter, we have her. right before i gave them the transaction number for the money to have it in his hands. >> police say they cannot trace the call because the number used was fake. police say if this happens to you you need to ask to speak to the person kidnapped and try to contact your family members to make sure it's not a scam. more popular eating smotsz are ramping up efforts to stop customers from surfing pornography on their in-house wi-fi systems. mcdonald's is the latest chain to do this and add filters to wi-fi systems to keep customers from viewing adult content. internet safetiedy advocates,

the dow rising 26 points to 18559. the nasdaq slipping 19 to 5036. the second busiest shopping season is on the year is upon us. they plan to spend $488 on back to school items this year. but those who started shopping before july will spend nearly $700 and they plan to buy higher ticket price items early to have enough time to learn how to use them. back to school sales are rise up 3%. that's the slowest growth since 2012. uber is teaming up with a satellite imaging company to improve maps for drive verbs. it provides images for google maps. digital globe updates maps frequently. changes such as traffic jams and construction zones. sam and laura, back over to you. >> thanks so much. landon dowdy. beaches on the monterrey coast this past weekend, look at that.

they've turned green. sand and surf, beachgoers are finding seaweed. one beach there sald sand city now is more like salad city, experts say the particular kind of sea wood issed i believe. it's like your own farmer's market on the beach. >> delightful. >> beachgoers are shocked when they find their favorite spot completely cover kred this stuff sglts i like green lettuce. the other day they thought people were throwing their lettuce out. >> it looks like a salad. >> bring your dressing. seaweed is expected to wash away but actually could take a week or more. >> this is not a surprise to father-in-law. they used to go out to the coast and they would collect seaweed. >> and dry it? >> dry it, use it for seasoning and use it in salads because seaweed salad. >> good source of eye dine? >> but some folks who wash across it so wash it. >> nothing in life is free. yeah. that's free. free seaweed.

>> continue the family tradition. >> weather is free. >> nice weather. you want to pay for it later on because we will have some hot weather as we head into the weekend. and we're going to see major changes over the next few days. a live look outside now. we start out this morning with mostly clear skies. as you head out the door, it's also nice and cool. no ac on just yet. even over the next couple of days. now as we get a live look outside, over the south bay we see the temperatures at 58 degrees with the high of 83 degrees. and mostly clear skies. the humidity now at 72%. we will have some calm winds and we've seen a shift in the wind direction. coming in from the south a light start to the day as far as our wind speed at about five to ten miles an hour. and then it starts to shift a little bit more onshore coming in from the southwest. that will keep the coastal areas cool. and also the inland areas, just a little bit warmer than yesterday. so this is what's to expect in san jose.

all clear, sunny, comfortable. at least through noontime. then it starts to warm up into the low 80s. and at 8:00 we will be at 68 degrees as we get ready for that sunset. a look at all the microclimates today in saratoga, up to 84. 74 in redwood city and 65 on the embarcader embarcadero. low 80s for the north bay. cop co concord, 84. in san francisco, highs will be in the mid to upper 60s this weekend into the lower 70s. upper 90s for the valleys as that heat continues to build. it stays with us in to the start of next week. mike is watching some lane closures as you cross the bay. >> that's right. so we're focusing on that, kari, because there are no major traffic incidents. chp is not worried about those but still talking about the lane closures. commute through the sensors. now move them out over here where we have nice drive through the castro valley y and the dublin interchange. earlier slowing we saw for 84 has simmered down to what we

first they lost their apartments and now some things are missing, too. you may remember the blaze in emeryville that took hours to extinguish on july 6th. several people say their apartments were ransacked by looters. security gates took two weeks to fix and thieves were able too walk right in. oakland police have increased patrols in that area. big marijuana bust on mt. hamilton. there are some of the 4700 plants that santa clara sheriff's deputies confiscated along with pvc piping and other grow materials. this brings the total number of raids this summer by santa clara

sheriffs deputies up to five. they say $33 million of pot has been kept off the streets as a result. in the most recent raid that happened last friday sheriffs arrested a suspect and confiscated an assault rifle. >> it's a safety people for people who walk through this property, we've seen on state property, county property, uc santa cruz property and large acre where's the suspects are going on their property and making the marijuana growth sdpls the sergeant says the environmental impact is bad, too. because that includes pollution from all the fertilizer that growers use and the water they're stealing to feed the thirsty plants. san francisco police investigating two separate carjackings that happened within 24 hours. first happened monday afternoon at 2:00 at 3rd street and yosemite avenue. they took a manes a acura legend at gun point. the victim wasn't hurt be the car was later found abandoned. the second carjacking happened

the north bay. it's only 50 degrees there. light jacket needed now in the east bay at 60 degrees with mostly clear skies. we start out without the low clouds and fog we've seen past r for the past couple of days and it will be a touch warmer for the inland areas reaching into the low 80s and the north bay, south bay, and tri-valley and 65 in san francisco. we'll talk about that warm-up coming up. mike tracked something you may see from the nimitz. >> the nimitz here through fremont had early morning road work. south dumbarton bridge. cleared without slowing. issue is just off the freeway as you drive up northbound 880, you may see flashing lights across the train track. again, that's on the east side -- northbound side of the freeway. there's a lot of police activity for that critical situation. we're going to hand it back to you with that blaking news. >> that's our breaking news following out of oakland this morning. police standoff under way right now. >> "today in the bay's" damian

is joining us live on the scene. this has been going on for hours. what's the latest? >> it's a police standoff at this point. right now there is a man in the backseat of this patrol car behind me. he is not in handcuffs. presumably a witness. a sergeant on the scene is telling me is that there was some sort of gathering in one of the warehouses here on 15th avenue and 12th street in oakland when somebody bran dished a handgun and that's when police were called. that they surrounded the place. evacuated everybody from there but apparently at least one gunman remains inside. using a bullhorn right now to try to coerce him to come out at this point. there is an alley here to my left. there are some officers here guarding the back entrance of this warehouse here. i did see at least one person handcuffed here on the scene on the corner of 12th and 16th here in east oakland. not much information is coming out here from the scene but again, they are guarding the perimeter of this warehouse. 12th street is closed between

i'm going to say 17th and 14th street here in oakland. and so you might want to avoid that area. we're live in oakland, damian truijillo "today in the bay." alameda flames ripped through storage units over night. >> firefighters are trying to figure out how it all happened. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live with a closer look at the damage that's now left behind this morning. bob? >> good morning to you, laura and sam. at the all safe storage facility in alameda the fire department is out here to make sure nothing flares up. this fire started around midnight. you can see the destruction lefd behind. we count six yin it ins destroyed, possibly a seventh. hard to tell what was inside. you can see filing cabinets. looks like table, chairs. i see an engine. cardboard -- what used to be cardboard boxes, small appliances. this started around midnight. when they arrived, the units

that were destroyeder were fully involved. part of the challenge in putting out the fire is once they got to the metal roll away doors you have a lot of material in there, a lot of fuel. so trying goat in there to get the fire out was difficult. they also found ten other units that happened smoke. so they had to cut those doors as well so that the smoke could evacuate. again, six to seven units destroyed. another 25 units they say suffered heavy smoke damage. no one was injured. there's still again trying to figure out the cause of this fire that ripped through the all safe storage facility here on alameda. reportingive loo on alameda, bob redell, "today in the bay." i'm so proud to be your nominee for president of the united states. >> and it is official. donald trump is the gop presidential nominee. last night california delegates helped put trump over the top and officially secure the gop's nomination. trump getting all 172 delegates from the golden state.

continuing coverage throughout the day. we have crews in cleveland all week. a former gilroy teacher is accuse of luring teenage boys into sending him explicit pictures. he's expected to enter a plea today. douglas le will appear in a san jose courtroom charge with 20 sex crimes against nine boys. he allegedly posed as a girl online and tricked the boys into sending him nude pictures and videos. some of the boys are former students at gilroy high school where he was a science teacher. trant transient accused in a movie theater stabbing is expected to appear in court later this morning. authorities on tuesday arrested 23-year-old delante hart. blood evidence led tome to arrest him and charge him with both crimes. hart is accused of stabbing a man multiple times inside the theater. two days earlier police say hart stabbed another homeless man more than 50 times.

that victim also survived. four asian cafes in the zhou bay may be linked to murder cases that have a all gone cold. san jose police are looking for the man seen walking in a black sweatshirt in this surveillance video. he actually points a gun at a man. we won't show you him pulling the trigger. it happened at the golden king tea house on allen rock avenue in december of 2014. police think the homicide may be link we'd three others. the most recent was last month. the four cafes on that same general area. >> can't say that these are gang homicides but i won't be surprise fd if that ends up bei the case. >> this video is from inside the cafe in march. police believe the man seen here holding a gun in his right hand shot two people. only one survived the attack. a burglar eer punched his w into the waiting arms of a

representative for the police officers association, officers for justice, says that it is important for the rank in file to know about this threat against their acting chief so that they can be on alert. kris sanchez, in the newsroom. quarter to 6:00 right now. san francisco supervisors yesterday blocked plans for a police reform measure. board member malia cohen called for expanded role for the office of citizen complaints which investigating police misconduct and officer-involved shootings. cohen's plan also would have made the office independent from the san francisco police department. supervisors instead are throwing their support behind a separate measure that would create an entirely new public advocate position. kaiser nurses launched in a contract dispute will launch trust traces today. the strike is planned and all hospitals will be fully staffed. the nurses plan to picket outside four bay area facilities for a short time this afternoon. nurses say kaiser is not meeting the staffing levels agreed to in

dead bat rays washing ashore in alviso and no one knows why. >> a woman noticed a dozen dead rays. marine experts say large die-offs of rays and sharks have periodically been reported from san francisco bay for decades. however, the reason why are not always clear. prevailing theory is that a combination of low oxygen and high salt con at the present time may have contributed to the die-off. >> everything is kind of a theory until it's actually looked into is the way i look at it. so oxygen levels, do i think it is? it's a possibility. do i think there's something in the water? there's also a huge possibility. >> experts do add that 12 dead rays is actually quite a large number. all sorts of weird things happening on our shores there. that and rt roing on seaweed washing up an seaside. >> the monterrey beaches over

all week long. we will be up to 83 degrees at 4:00. so feeling nice and warm. and later on this evening the breeze kicks in. we'll see the same thing in oakland but much cooler. only reaching the mid 70 there's by 4:00. and then gilroy today up to 90 degrees. 81 degrees in palo alto. the mission district today, 63 degrees. and some low 80s for the north bay. napa, 82 degrees. 84 in concord. oakland, 75. pleasant pleasanton, a high of 84 degrees. we do still have this area of low pressure that is to the north of us. giving us the onshore flow. keeping ur temperatures down. what happens as we go into the weekend we won't have the morning clouds and fog. and the inland temperatures in the valleys will warm up into the 90s. and that also increases the fire danger as high pressure builds just to the west of us. so something we'll be watching as we go into the rest of the week. a look at san francisco's forecast for the next seven days. highs in mid to upper 60s. still feels very nice there. we'll be in the low 70s into the

we got that shot from the control room. and right there, that's the sign, caution, accident. you see that traffic is not flowing northbound. this just happened a couple of seconds guy because kari noticed the sign but no updates from chp. i will find out there is a bus. traffic does look like it's allowed to flow across that bridge. better news. only two lanes would be available. i'll see how much restriction there is. back to you. mike, thank you very much. as we see a beautiful sun rise now on your wednesday morning. 5:50. contra costa county is getting a boost in efforts to protect drivers from freeway shootings which have been rattling people for months now in the east bay. county supervisors have approved $100,000 for new monitoring systems along highway 4. that money will pay for increased surveillance along the stretch from bay point to antioch. if you're keeping track here since the beginning of last year, authorities have reported almost 40 shootings on five different interstates and

highways in contra cost to and alameda counties. when it comes to pokemon go just about anything you hear these days can be hard to believe. it would have to include the expected turnout tonight for first of its kind crawl. organizers are using social media to plan a pokemon go crawl through san francisco. it starts at 6:00 tonight at both deloris park and embarcadero. if you believe the event's facebook page, 8,000 people will be taking part. another 28,000 are interested. nothing to sneeze at. police reportedly plan to add more patrols along the route. >> you've got to love that. pub crawls. now you have pokemon crawls. this guy might have been crawling a little bit after putting down 80 some odd hot dogs. happening today though may be a lot of digest but the bay area's top dog in competing competitive eating is going to be more than just wined and dined. they are throwing joey chestnut his own victory parade in san francisco. his name is joey chestnut,

island of away hue. large wave knocked mina further into the water. her father, mark horner, tried to save her but a series of rogue waves swept them away in the process. family members they is a horner's two older daughters were also in the water at the time. >> bigger girls, 12 and 8 years old, clinging to rocks. didn't know another wave was coming. >> a stranger was able to save the other two girls. lifeguards pulled the father and mina out of the water but at that point it was too late. >> what a sad thing for that family. 5:56. hollywood mourning the death of a directing, producing, and writer legend this morning. garry marshall, the man behind the string of tv hits including "happy days" and "la verne and shirley" died last night from complications of pneumonia following a stroke. marshall helped launch the career of robin williams, just one of many. he cast him in "mork and mindy." he also directed nearly 20 foils

including "pretty woman." right now people are leaving flowers on his star along the hollywood walk of fame. garry marshall was 81 years old. >> quite the life rhistory and resume. for the first time in eight years the red cross is issuing an emergency request for more good donations. the red cross is asking eligible donors to give blood as soon as possible. it says in the case of an emergency it has less than five-day supply of blood r blood on hand right now. the zika virus is partly a factor because visiting zika hot spots makes a donor ineligible for a month. the red cross is extending hours of donation sites in the hopes of making up for that shortage. 5:57. mosquitos in parts of the south bay tested positive for the west nile virus. earlier this month infected mosquitos were found in west and south san jose. these are the neighborhoods. parts of san jose and campbell near the 280 highway/17

interchange the. crews will treat that area tomorrow night into friday morning. swimmers and surfers in southern california want to mow when they can be treated to getting back in the ocean after a massive sewage spill. closed a wide stretch of coastline. so far more than 2 million gallons of sewage spilled since monday. that's when a broken pipe started sending wastes into the los angeles river which then found its way into the pacific ocean. beaches between long beach and seal beach are closed still. it's apparently leafing a major stench along that area. health experts are going to test the ocean waters again today to figure out if and when it will be safe to reopen the closed coastline. in the meantime, the beaches on the monterrey coast are turning green. >> yes. it's the strangest thing. instead of sand and surf they're finding tons of seaweed. one beach there called sand city but ask more like salad city experts say the type of seaweed is eligible.

weather continues as well. good morning, kari. >> good morning. it does continue with some 50s as you head out the door. it is now 52 degrees in the peninsula and 49 degrees in the north bay. kind of cool. and we'll warm it up to 82 degrees in the north bay. also 83 degrees in the south bay. 80s ♪ south bay, tri-valley, up to 65 degrees in san francisco. the warming tend don't through the week so i'll talk about that coming up in just a few minutes. mike has b.a.r.t. delays and what's going on at the golden gate bridge. >> so we'll talk about the b.a.r.t. delays first. fremont line reported, mechanical equipment problems so we don't know factually what but that is causing delay for the fremont line. major delays specified. that means anything 20 minutes or no, more than 20 minutes, i should say. that will be a problem. fremont in through hayward and downtown oakland. across the golden gate bridge we saw that sign that kari pointed out. there's a crash causing some slowing it looks like from the paer
