that shifted an now cleared. maybe some road work or cruise clearing in the area but nothing big. approach to the bay bridge. look at san rafael south 101 moves well along this stretch of the north bay as well. we're going to head to you guys for breaking news. thank you very much. we start overnight on the peninsula where there is a community center that is in flames right now. we begin in millbrae, specifically where that fire is burning right now. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell just arrived on the scene. looks active behind you. >> good morning. you're looking at the millbrae community center here that's been burning for over an hour. you can see the flames coming through the roof there. the respective fire departments squirting water on it trying to get those flames to tamp down. it's been burning like that since we got here with the flames being visible for the past 20 minutes or so. there was an aerial ladder or hose hovering over the roof. they've sense removed that. i want you to pan down, you can tilt down and see how dangerous

the job of a firefighter is as you've got several firefighters on the offensive inside what is a very smoke-filled building. inside that community center with their masks and oxygen tanks on. so they can try to fight this fire from the inside as well. this started around 3:50 this morning. i spoke with a man who lives around this community center, tells us the community center, the centerpiece for this particular part of millbrae. he said it started as smoke investigation, smoke coming out and then of course it grew to unfortunately what you're seeing right now which is a three alarm fire. he believes based on his understanding of the layout of the community center this started in the kitchen. that is not confirmed yet by the fire departments. but he believes it started in the kitchen and possibly spread to an auditorium. again, this is somebody very familiar with the layout of this millbrae community center. as i mentioned, this has grown to a third alarm which means the fire department had to twice call for backup for the second 1/3 alarm. we know south county is here which covers millbrae,

hillsboro, sam bruno, and the, i believe the millbrae fire department are here as well. again, a lot of local roads here which is not going to effect your commute traffic, are shut down as you've got a lot of firefighters out here trying to put out this fire again that is urng be through the millbrae community center. reporting live here in millbrae, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. more breaking news right now. dangerous and scary situation in brisbane overnight. shots were fired at a large party. about midnight police responded to reports of a party near the intersection of bay shore and industrial. they arrived on scene to find 300 people partying in a field behind a warehouse. as police were shutting the party down they then heard a gunshots. two people were taken to a nearby trauma center and their conditions right now are unknown. police are still searching for the shooter or shooters at that party. also new this morning on the peninsula, a police chase ends right in front of a new correctional facility, a women's

jail, in redwood city. it started about 11:00 last night. the car kept on going leading police first southbound on 201, then back on the freeway northbound, finally exiting at woodside road. a man jumped out and began running towards the jail. it was there that he was apprehended and taken into custody. we want trump. we want trump. we want trump. >> did you see this? pretty tense night at the republican convention as senator ted cruz provides some unexpected drama by refusing to endorse the gop presidential nominee donald trump. now trump himself will face a divided party tonight as he officially accepts the nomination. "today in the bay's" tracie potts was inside the quicken loans arena gathering reaction. tonight is trump's night but this morning ted cruz is what everyone is talking about.

winner. >> reporter: delegates cheered pence. and applauded eric trump. >> vote for the candidate who can't be bought, sold, purchased, bribed, coerced, intimidated. >> reporter: the pro-trump speeches marred by mutiny was trump prepares to accept his hard fought and still controversial victory. a truck ended up on the b.a.r.t. track in the east bay shutting down service last night for riders on both sides of the bay. that led to plenty of frustrated passengers. the cause of all this? right here, a truck that crashed through a fence and on to the track just south of the west oakland station at about 7:30. it took b.a.r.t. workers an hour to remove it from the track and to test them out before the station would reopen. b.a.r.t. says the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui. in san francisco, there were long lines of people trying to get on buses as b.a.r.t. started a bus bridge to move people from san francisco to oakland and

vice versa. we ran into a group of stringers who hopped into an uber together to make it back to oakland. >> everyone started wanting to take the bus and no one could take the bus. because there were so many people and then just strangers started coming together. >> we bonded over the bridge. yeah. we split a fare. >> they bonded over surge pricing probably, too. the delayst laed from until about -- lasted until about 9:00 last night when the service was finally restored. a frustrating commute last night for people trying to cross the richmond san rafael bridge. all kinds of transportation problems. i-580 backed up because of an overturned tractor trailer. it collide with a tow truck at 7:00. crews worked for hours to get it up right. there's no word of any injuries. police in berkeley have arrested several people in connection with the bb gun shooting this week.

surrounding the cal campus. officers arrested the suspect shortly after a shooting early tuesday morning. they say they found the suspect's car a short time later and a bb gun inside. the group is believed to be behind an attack monday outside cal's international house that injured one person. santa clara county sheriff's department has the money, the testing, and the training but still no body cameras. >> project has been two years in the making at this point. and now we're learning a deputies will not be getting the equipment for at least eight months if not longer. the reason the sheriff's office is tangled up in a lot of county red tape right now. for example, a privacy ordinance that requires all surveillance equipment to be approved by the board of supervisors. >> there are rules but there are also ways to expedite the rules. that's what we need to focus on more. >> he says he's going to make thur is body camera issue is on the agenda at the next board meeting. right now there's no timeline of when that equipment will be

approved. black lives matter protesters are still chained to the doors of the oakland police officer's association and they are planning to stay there for a full 24 hours. they're calling for the city to take some of the funding from the police department and put honey into community programs that keep people safe. the protests started yesterday afternoon. it follows tuesday night's city council hearing on a proposed police commission to watch over the police department. 5:09. kari hall watching over your forecast on this thursday. another nice day in store, kari. >> yes, it will be another nice day. take it in because this weekend is looking hot. as we get a live look outside in san jose. right now the temperatures at 59 degrees and heading up to 81. nice cool start to this day. and we will have some near average temperatures at least for now. but in the next few days it will be warming up, approaching 90 degrees. and this weekend will turn hotter with some upper 90s for those inland areas. i'll talk about that and what else to expect coming up in less

willing and a able to pay more money. the board of directors approved a contract to pay recruiting companies to help them with this hiring process. engineers we talked to say the job is highly rewarding. >> work regular hours, go back home. rest your mind mean and come back the work. >> engineers say that working on new technology that helps the bay area move is exhilarating. with summer heating up, palo alto fire station covering high fire danger area of the foothills is now closed. fire station 8 in foothill park received just a few calls last year. so at of july 1 "today" show palo alto fire department stopped staffing it. during fire season two or three firefighters used to be a sign there. the station is also assigned to protect 20 square miles and 160 homes. >> we decided that we would probably be a better use of taxpayers' dollars to handle more of the calls down here in the valley versus staff that station up there during fire

season. >> closing the station also saves $300,000 which will eventually go to adding another department ambulance. thanks to agreements with the santa clara fire department another agencies people who live in the foothills should still be protected and response times should not change. the bay area enjoys many great distinctions, this is not one of them. bay area restaurants have the largest racial pay gap in the country. that is according to a nonprofit group that advocates on behalf of restaurant workers. employees of color at fine dining restaurants in the bay area are paid $6 less than white workers. it also found a jentder gap. the group says that men in fine dining restaurants earn more than a dollar more than female counterparts. uber accuse of dereceiving riders out of cash and now the san francisco company is facing a class action lawsuit. san francisco magazine reports plaintiffs claim the ride share company is making millions of dollars through cancelation fees. the suit goes after uber's pilot program that charges $5 if

>> 5:18. no investigation necessary on the weather front. it's been this way all week. gorgeous. but it's going the change. >> it will change as we head into the weekend. talking about hotter temperatures into the weekend, especially for those inland areas. the beach will be the place to be. as we get a live look outside now we start out this morning with a few more clouds starting to roll over the south bay. here's a live look now at san jose. and as you go into the rest of the day we'll see those temperatures really starting to heat up. we'll be in the upper 80s today but you won't notice much of a difference from oakland down to san jose and palo alto. it will be a touch warmer in fairfield, concord, as well as livermore. warmer than yesterday. the wind starting to come in onshore. that will bring it down near the coastline. also keep us in with the low clouds and the fog around half-moon bay and san francisco. but in san joses, nothing but sun today. starting out at 60 at 8:00. up to 81 degrees at 4:00 today and dropping back into the upper 60s later on this evening.

mild and breezy for now. also for tomorrow but then this weekend, a hot area of high pressure will build just to the west of us. and creating some 90s and even 100 degree plus temperatures in the valley. and that increases our fire danger. we will also not see the morning clouds and the fog. over the next seven days in san francisco, some 60s there. some low 70s for saturday and sunday. and next week also not looking bad. but it will be very hot from 85 today up to 95 saturday. 98 degrees on sunday. once again, those mid to upper 90s will feel very hot and dry and it continues into next week. now as we head over to mike you're still track that crash on the bay bridge. >> that's right. it's a concern because although know lanes are blocked you will see the slowing. looking over here, the rest of the bay, no slowing evident from our sensors. even the tri-valley we had earlier slowing through pleasant on the is cleared. the bay bridge toll plaza up the

an unbelievable act of determination and team work helped save the life of a very lucky man. look at this incredible video. a driver in south care lost control of his convertible and you saw it flip over there. trapped underneath he waited for help and take a look at all those good samaritans. they just started pushing that car completely over.

that team pushed and pushed until they were able to flip that car back over. and amazingly, look at him. that driver was okay. >> absolutely incredible. >> i was not expecting to see that many people just standing there just watching and one lady was praying throughout the whole thing. and people are giving me hugs. >> it can't imagine he wasn't crush p crushed. the driver was wearing a seat belt which certainly helped save his life. heartbreaking loss of a father and daughter killed in hawaii. we're hearing from the man who saved mark horner's other two daughters. >> horner was on a family vacation in oahu visiting from berkeley when a rogue wave swept his 6-year-old daughter out to sea. horner tried to go after his little girl as his two older daughters were clinging to rocks. trying not to get swept out also. that's when scott kato, a stranger, jumped in to try to save them.

>> honestly don't consider myself a hero. you know, mark is a hero. he was going to get her no matter what. he was not leaving that ocean or even thinking about his own safety. >> unconditional love for his daughter there. horner and his 6-year-old daughter later died at the hospital as they were receiving care. the cal graduate, an attorney, leaves behind his wife and his two older daughters. happening now, at least 75 people are dead or missing in northern china this morning. amid some of the worst flooding in years. heavy and constant downpours continue to batter parts of the country causing wide spread damage. as all that water pours in traffic into beijing has been disrupted and hundreds of flights have been canceled. i'm bob redell, live on the scene of breaking news here on the peninsula where a fire at the millbrae community center is now grown to four alarms. we'll have that story coming up. and talk about bad luck.

highs today reaching low 80s for the north bay, south bay, and the tri-valley. san francisco, a breezy 63 degrees. it will be heating up. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. mike's taking us back to that crash now on the bay bridge. >> that crash still there and that started early slowing on the approach to the toll plaza. the rest of the bay shows an easy light drive as you would expect at 5:31 in the morning. zoom over here and looking at no problems for the berkeley curve but that may start to build. let's look over here from our emeryville camera. train over towards that crash and still we have the big rig and what looks like a big rig tow truck arriveington scene. seeing shadows running around back and for the. three chp cruisers. blocking the slow lane. folks are funneling over and that the getting it of the bridge and filling in the toll plaza for the 880 overcrossing. we just mentioned it at the top of our show. breaking news. flames ripping through a community center in millbrae. >> firefighters are trying to

figure out how it happened as they bat the flames. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. what can you tell us, bob? >> good morning. that fire department has been fighting this fire here to millbrae community center for well over an hour and the flames as you can see behind me are still bursting through that roof. i just spoke to a battalion chief to ask him what the biggest challenge is and the problem they're facing right now is that this fire has already extended into the attic which is underneath the roof. so trying to access this fire with those flames makes it difficult. this is a three-prong attack. they have hose lines on the side of the building burning. you can see those squirts of water, those streams of water coming up from time to time. they also have a firefighter positioned on the tocht roof on the ladder. and then they have firefighters who are actually inside the building with their oxygen masks trying to do whatever they can do from the inside. i spoke to a firefighter who was i side. i asked him what it's like. he said the visibility is

horrible. cann cannot even see the hand in front of your face. it was his impression that this fire started on the outside of the building. of course it's too early to tell. battalion chief didn't have any information with regards to that. we did speak with somebody who is a resident who has lived in this area very familiar with the community center and he saw the smoke coming out of the building around 3:50 and it was under his impression that it started in the kitchen area. again, nothing confirmed as far as the source or the cause of this fire. that resident however says it is sad to see this figure piece of the neighborhood go up in flames like this. >> this center is important to everybody. i come here every year for the easter egg hunt. used to in high school. and i think this is an important part of our community. and to see this is kind of surprising to me, if not just shock. >> this fire has grown as you can telling us earlier, sam and laura, within the past 30 minutes to a fourth alarm. that means that the fire department had to call for --

command had to call for backup three times. get extra units out here. three agencies at least out here. millbrae, south county, and central county which covers the millbrae and sam bruno fire department out here as well. so you have a lot of firefighters out here again trying to put out this fire that's been burning for well over an hour here at the millbrae community center. reporting live in millbrae, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they get a handle of it soon. new this morning shs wild chase on the peninsula ends with a suspect jumping a fence right on to jail property. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live there in redwood city. that's where the pursuit ended. kris, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam and laura. this is the new maple street correctional facility where the suspect was arrested and where he may end up once again after he's booked at the san mateo county main jail. here's a look at that pursuit. i know you saw some of it. begins after the driver of that bmw refuses to stop.

the chp officers pursued him from that initial stop on veterans boulevard near woodside road on to highway 101 south off the highway on to marsh road back on the highway but this time headed northbound. now, when the suspect finally came to a stop on blomquist it could not have been in a more ironic place. >> ironically enough we are near the entrance of the women's -- brand new correctional facility here. >> reporter: the suspect was arrested on the spot here at the maple street correctional facility for failing to stop for that officer and also on a warrant for a suspected dui. now, it is possible that the suspect didn't even know where he was because this facility is so new it doesn't even show up on some of the maps. in fact, it on started accepting male inmates about mid april or so-and-so the suspect could end up back here. the bookings are still done at

the main jail. arrested by chp officer here on the grounds of a san mateo sheriff's department and just across the street is the redwood city police department. so very bad day for that guy. in redwood city, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it was another wild night in cleveland last night. ted cruz, he's smiling there. he only seems to be the subject of conversation for everyone today. here's why. the texas senator took the stage at the republican national convention last night and many believe veered off course. cruz never endorsed donald trump and by the end of his speech that created quite the mayhem scene on the convention floor with delegates boo'ing and chanting "we want trump." take a listen. >> we want trump. we want trump. we want trump. >> ted cruz called on republicans to vote with their conscience. the end of cruz's speech was not only interrupted by boo's but

also donald trump as he entered the arena seeing what was going on. now, there were also reports that heidi cruz, ted cruz's wife, had to be escorted out of the arena by security after hecklers were going after her, too, yelling goldman sachs, where heidi cruz works. the main event last night was supposed to be gop vice presidential nominee mike pence and his address. pence was the headliner, officially accepting his nomination and delivering his speech to try and heal and soothe over some of the fractures in the republican party. >> and my fellow republicans, when donald trump becomes president of the united states of america, the change will be huge. >> the indiana governor said donald trump picked hip to be his vice president to add balance to the ticket. tonight is the rnc's grand finale with donald trump himself taking the stage. 5:37. santa rosa man is under arrest for pledging allegiance to eye

sis and making threats. according to the chronicle authorities say 27-year-old elias isaac called police and claimed he wanted to join militants in the middle east. police say the sudan native vowed to abstain and use an assault weapon if he was not deported. isaac was released from prison july 6th after serving a four-year sentence for weapons charges. he will appear in court today. menlo park police search for a group of thieves for a taste for fine wine. mercury news reports burglars snatched 48 bottles of wine from wine and spirits last wednesday. bars were just pulled off the front door and glass smashed just to get in. the store which is set to close saturday after 134 years in business had recently brought in some high-end wines from the attic and placed them on the shelves. the thieves certainly went after those wines. taking some bottles wot more than $1,000. >> a lot of money. 5:38. missing east bay man is found

dead in nevada county. now police are investigating the case as a possible homicide. deputies found the body of michael mahony tuesday night. family members in union city first reported the 67-year-old missing several days ago. now investigators are calling his death suspicious but they're not revealing exactly why. an exact cause of death has not yet been determined. let's take a break from the news just a tad and check in with kari. she's got a look at that forecast for us. >> it will be another great day all across the bay area but starting to warm up for those inland areas. right now as you head out the door we have some mid to upper 50s. the same way we started this entire week. and was we look at today's high temperatures, 88 degrees in fairfield and concord. and livermore, 85 degrees. while oakland is at 68. palo alto is 77. and san jose up to 81 degrees. we'll talk about that weekend warm-up coming up in less than ten minutes. help you make weekend plans. heading over to mike, progress

back to braking news that we're following in a great different angle for you from up overhead. this is a four alarm community center fire that's been burning in millbrae since this morning. fire crews have had a tough time tackling this one. they've had to call for backup at least three times. this is a community center. they don't exactly know how it started. reports that it started in kitchen but firefighters say the visibility is so poor it could have started outside the building. that investigation no doubt will continue. right now they're just trying to bat the fire that has now spread to the attic.

to 15 miles an hour. and then as we go into the evening it does become breezy up to 15 miles an hour. and breaking it down for san francisco, nice and breezy there. another cool day. highs only reaching to low 60s. we will have some time of sunshine. look at the microclimates. 84 degrees. 77 in palo alto. the i'm berk der ro. oakland will be at 68 degrees. and pleasanton, 87 degrees. so it's not bad at all but we're in for some changes. this area of high pressure will build and we won't have as much of an onshore flow. northerly wind. the high heat will build in the valleys. over 100 degrees preside. try valley will be in the upper 90s. that will increase the fire danger, hot and dry. in san francisco, expect the highs to reach into the 60s for today and tomorrow. still very nice. this weekend we'll be in the low 70s and compare thatvalleys.
