your weekend on this friday. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we are opening up to some hot weather coming our way as well. >> yes, we are about to open those doors and just let the heat just rush on in. >> great. >> getting ready for a hot weekend. today will be right at about average for most of the bay area. azawi start to see that warming trend kicking in, it's now 55 degrees in san francisco. check out the north bay, it's 48 degrees. a little bit cool in spots but the highs today will be up to 88 degrees there. 78 degrees in the peninsula. and the east bay up to 81 degrees. we will talk about how hot it gets as we go into the next several days. that's coming up in a few minutes. heading over to mike weir looking for a light friday commute. >> we are. that's what we're finding but it's also a 5:00 commute so we will see how things shape up. typical on a friday, though, you don't have any big developments happening early in the morning commute. this is the upper east shore freeway and the maze. you're at speed. the north bay. i did see a little bit of fog registering for a couple of minutes on the roadway.

in the north bay. it's not a problem. in fact that cleared from all of our read. that may have been a blip on my system there. looking at smooth drive. this is san rafael, clear drive to the golden gate bridge. back to you. not a clear drive earlier this morning as breaking news we're to following in the south bay. hit and run investigation. it's happening at the area of ha hillsdale in san jose. >> that is where we find "today in the bay's" damian trujillo live from the scene. damian, police had to search down the person who did this and they found him. >> reporter: yeah, they did, sam. it happened just after 2:00 this morning here in san jose. police cleared the scene just a short while ago but it was quite a scene here. the wreckage from the victim's car here on hillsdale avenue. it happened right in front of the nissan dealership here on capital expressway as it turns into hills day. the victim's car was mangled when police responded to the call that came in as a single car accident. there was an uber and lyft

stickers on the car but it's hard to say if the driver was fairying a fare or simply driving with family members in the car. they told police a car had hit them and took off. officers were able to track that car down to a nearby carson elementary in san jose. the driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol to see if any illegal substance was involved in this collision. police are still trying to determine the cause of the accident. >> so the vehicle left the scene and drove a mile, mile and a half to this location where officers located that person and he's got injuries and so he also was transported to the hospital. >> reporter: the sergeant on the scene also tells me the victims were taken to a nearby hospital after they complained of minor pain. he believes all of the victims in that car will be okay. three people total were in that victim's car here in san jose. we're live along hillsdale avenue in san jose, i'm damian

trujillo. more breaking news overseas. a massive search is under way after an indian military plane care riggs 29 people goes missing. the plane was taking passengers to islands in the bay of bengal when it lost contact with the air force. the flight was supposed to take three hours but the defense ministry says there's still have been no contact with the plane. three hours beyond its arrival time. the aircraft can only go four hours without refueling. new this morning, malaysia, australia, and china have agreed to suspend the search for malay that airlines flight 370. once the current area is completely scoured. the three governments are involved because the airline was malaysian, most of the passengers were chinese, and the suspected crash site is off the coast of southwestern australia. the boeing 777 vanished more than two years ago while on a flight from to beijing. it's expected to wind down by

announcement later today. in an effort to shift attention away from the end of the republican convention and build momentum heading into next week's democratic convention. virginia senator tim kaine is believed to be the front-runner. the 58-year-old has been active in the senate on foreign relationing and military affairs. he was the governor of virginia prior to that. kaine has also built a reputation for working across the aisle as virginia's governor and mayor of richmond. sources also note that while kaine is the favorite, mrs. clinton has not yet made a final decision. former bay area police officer is behind bars and accused of raping and sexually assaulting women while he was on duty. noah winchester is a former san mateo police officer. he now faces nearly two dozen felony charges that include rape, kidnapping, and sexual battery. authorities say that in addition to raping a woman while he was on duty, winchester also sexually assaulted at least four other women including a 17-year-old girl. the alleged assaults happened

when he was a police officer for the los rois community district in the sacramento area. >> they're supposed to be people to be here to protect us. >> you expect more with someone like that. it is disappointing. >> 31-year-old was a san mateo officer for ten months and reportedly passed extensive background checks. it is 25g 08. new details this morning on the new york city police officer accuse of being drunk when he drove his car into a group of pedestrians killing a bay area college student. we've now learned that officer has been fired. the victim drew was from hills berg. he was a senior at m.i.t. and interning in new york. there's a picture of his face book page. he was working with friends in brook len when the rookie officer drove on to the sidewalk early saturday morning. vodka is facing a slew of charges including manslaughter. he was due at work four hours later. police are now calling the death of a woman found inside her gilroy home suspicious.

around 2:00 p.m. on wednesday police say they received a call from a woman saying her daughter was driving recklessly around their neighborhood. officers arrived on the scene and found the daughter who told them that her mom had shot and killed herself inside of their home. police have not identified yet the woman who died. san mateo county sheriff investigatoring say a man tried to kidnap a 12-year-old girl in redwood city yesterday. the girl reported a bhit man between 30 and 40 years owed rode up to her on a bike at douglas and fair oaks avenue at noon. he asked if she was lost and then tried to grab her. police are providing a little more details about the man's description or they're not providing that much. if we get any more we will bring them to you. we have been getting descriptions all weekend long on the weather forecast that's awaiting us and usually involve something to do with hot, steamy, and triple digits. >> yes, we're getting ready for hot inland temperatures near the coastline. that will be nice and cool. as we start out this morning in san jose, it's 61 degrees and heading up to 87. and here's what to expect today.

law enforcement agencies from across the nation to attend today's funeral for officer matthew gerald. the 41-year-old was a former marine and blackhawk crew chief. he was the first year officer. he leaves behind a wife and two children. funerals for the other two officers are scheduled for tomorrow and monday. san francisco police investigating a new threat against their own officers days after a separate threat against the chief. investigators say an anonymous caller phoned the ingleside station and says he would offer an award for any person who killed an officer of the pd. tension over recent police shootings of african-american men boiling over into the streets of oakland once again. >> and all over the country. hundreds of people took to the streets last night. it was a national day of action in 80 cities. black lives master protester

marched from police headquarters to city hall. there's been a week of tension since the high profile slayings of black men at the hands of police officers. protesters who want to make sure the community demands change. >> a lot of people of color it's something that you are grown in to. you grew into a discomfort around police. >> we want to defund the oakland police department by 50%. we want that 50% to go toward other program that we know from the research and data actually leads to safer communities. >> organizers say there will be more protests and more calls of action in the weeks to come. happening today, organizers ramping up the push to make city college of san francisco free for everyone who lives or works in san francisco. community members will hold a rally to educate san francisco voters of on the the free city college november ballot measure. a new tax on the city's most expensive homes would pay for that plan. fighting not just a political campaign but also a legal battle. donald trump's lawyers today will ask a san diego judge to toss out a lawsuit against trump

university. the case is one of two class action lawsuits accusing trump university of false promises including the claim they could teach success in real estate. the university no longer exists. trump argues the case lacks merit. trump is also claimed the presiding judge is bias due to his mexican heritage. going back to last night the final evening of the republican convention, donald trump was not the only person making history. silicon valley billionaire peter thiel also did so last night at the convention. >> the first openly gay man to speak to take on republican stage in ten years. scott mcgrew, the first person to say he was gay ever. >> the first person ever ever to actually stand up there and say i'm gay, thiel started that speech he was outed involuntarily by the gossip block gawker years ago. last night thiel who is not a regular public speaker started

hey, there is a techie the spider making an appearance there on the camera lens for san jose. it's 59 degrees in oakland. and concord, 56 degrees. livermore, 55. and san jose at 57 degrees. a nice cool start as we go sba the rest of the day. look at these inland temperatures. really starting to warm up. but we're still just right at about average or just slightly above. and then as you head toward the inner bay and coastal areas it still feels nice and cool. oakland will be up to 75. and san francisco, 69 degrees. as we go throughout the day in san francisco we may see the low clouds and fog rolling in for a little while but it rolls out to give us sunshine today. it will be 64 degrees at 1:00. 5:00, nice and sunny. some low clouds returning later on tonight. so the pool forecast will be up to 91 degrees later today. sunny and warm once again. as we go into the beach, you may be heading to the beach today. 72 degrees in pacifica.

half-moon bay, 70 degrees. and in the mid 70s for santa cruz. that will be one of the warmer spots in places to enjoy the warmer weather, especially as it continues to heat up inland. so was we look at the forecast and what to expect, high pressure builds and that will give us some hot weather as we head into the weekend. as well as early next week our pattern will be slow to change so we're talking about some 90s to 100 degrees inland. i'll talk more about that coming up. now, mike's checking in on a crash near the bay bridge. >> i thought maybe it was a duplicate report and that looks like what it is. the scene itself, the berkeley curve has completely cleared. let me show you the sensors as they play out around the bay. nothing but green to really speak of. way back at the altamont pass off the 205, 580 merge where we see speeds down toward 50. this issue here at the berkeley curve had cleared. new incident reported closer to treasure island. that might be where the fender bender is. i'm waiting for the bridge crew to give us confirmation. from the pattern it might be on

weekend. we have clear the shelters. we've been talking all about that. we are also approaching the dog days of summer. >> perfect. >> yeah, it's going to be hot. today will be that last day where we're at near average temperatures. and then it heats up for the next several days and it looks like it just continues on for a while. it's now 55 degrees. as you head out the door in san francisco, 48 degrees in the north bay. cool in spots, but of course it doesn't stay that way. we'll be up to 88 degrees today in the north bay. 87 in the south bay. tri-valley will also be hot, hitting the low 90s. while san francisco will be at 69 degrees. we'll talk about how hot it gets coming up in just a few minutes. mike says there's a traffic break out of san francisco. >> slowing we saw on the bay bridge eastbound getting on to the lower or on the lower deck, we'll show you that. the map shows you overall, smooth. couple incidents have popped up on the south bay. no major issues so far. this over here, getting toward treasure island you see the

slowing eastbound 80 you still have your eight two lanes blocked. left two are open at if treasure island tunnel. earlier fender bender and a tow truck may have arrived on the scene. crash in san rafael by our camera but the camera shows southbound where the crash is clear because that crash is at the san pedro off-ramp just outside of our view. we go to the south bay and breaking news there where a driver is behind bars this morning after he's accused of colliding into a now crumpled car and fleeing the scene. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live where all this happened overnight. what can you tell us? >> reporter: it happened right here in front of the nissan dealership at the capitol expressway auto mall in south san jose. police cleared the scene just a short while ago. about an hour ago here in this part of town. it was quite a scene earlier this morning. the victim's car was pretty much mangled right here on capitol expressway when police arrived. this is the auto mall where all the car dealerships are at on

mall. we're live in south san jose, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." i am the law and order candidate. >> republican presidential nominee donald trump delivers the longest convention acceptance speech in over four decades. clocking in at one hour and 15 minutes, trump painted the current picture of america as crime ridden, under attack from terrorists, and economically depressed. trump closed the republican convention last night. there were several themes in his speech. foreign policy, trump says as president he will focus on america and not globalization. he reiterated his promise to roll back trade deals which he says will bring jobs back and the most important theme of the speech was defeating hillary clinton. >> this is the legacy of hillary clinton, death, destruction, terrorism, and weakness. >> trump also called for building a border wall between the u.s. and mexico.

the gop nominee did not go into the details of how he will deliver on his promises or how much they will cost. trump was introduced by his daughter ivanka trump. >> he will fight for you all the time, all the way, every time. >> ivanka also tried to hammer home that her father was specifically fight for equality for women. during his speech trump spotlighted the bay area in connection with san francisco's controversial sanctuary city law in the deadly shooting of cait steinly. >> my opponent want sanctuary cities. but where was the sanctuary for cait steinle? >> steinle was the young woman shot and killed allegedly by an undocumented immigrant deported five times from the u.s. trump renewed his pledge to build that great border wall, as i mentioned already, to stop illegal immigration. back now in the bay area and

facebook wants to expand its menlo park campus, the city of menlo park wants to allow it, two non-profits are saying not so fast. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live from menlo park with what the community advocates say must be an essential part of this plan. kris? >> reporter: good morning, sam. yes, there are two non-profits, want to make sure when facebook expands its footprint here in the city of 33,000 people that it happens as responsibly as possible. let's give you a look at the area we're talking about. the proposed expansion at the west campus as it was formerly known, building 20. looking above from our chopper you can see the cars on the freeway to put that size in perspective. now, the aclu and the non-profit public advocates posted a strongly worded letter to facebook, on facebook, and also on an open blog claiming the expansion could displace low income people. facebook's expansion would add

to that 60-acre site, 126,000 square feet of office space and 200-room hotel. dushlly facebook says it is committing to spending $7.8 million toward affordable housing, $3 million to mitigate the traffic congestion in the area, and they also want to build 1500 housing units, 22 of which would be subsidized to help teachers and firefighters and other workers live in community and 15% of those units would be offered below market race. the aclu and non-profit advocates want to make sure menlo park doesn't worsen the crisis and the displacement services impactsing this city of menlo park and the bay area. city council will revisit the environmental review coming up in december so certainly a long-term conversation. in menlo park, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it is 5:36 . firefighters say two spate fires

burning at the altamont landfill could burn for a few days. it's between livermore and tracy. the first fire started wednesday. the second last night. no word on how they started. firefighters say a burning file of landscaping material is helping to enerate a large amount of smoke. a second life now lost in a family tragedy in vallejo. police tell us on wednesday a mother succumbed to injuries she suffer fred a house fire in may. the woman and 5-year-old son were inside the home when the flames engulfed the house killing the boy. the boy's father is accuse of intentionally setting the fire. he turned himself in to police in the days after that blaze. new details now on a story we first broke yesterday morning on "today in the bay." a fire in millbrae that destroyed a community center might be arson. that is according to fire investigators who say the department did everything that it could to fight the flames. even using a drone at one point to check for ways to knock the

fire down. it broke out just before 4:00 yesterday morning on lincoln cirque until millbrae. it's right next to taylor middle school. someone has been setting small fires in that area. neighbors are concerned about it. >> neighborhood we've been dealing with a lot of robberies. and so this seems just like another layer of concern. >> dozens of after school and summer programs are now being moved to other locations. there's been another shark sighting in pacifica and it has beachgoers feeling uneasy. for the second time in a month a shark has been spotted at a popular beach. the siting was reported yesterday at noon. 80 yards off the shore. surfers saw the six-foot-long shark swimming near a group of whales. anyone heading into the water is to be cautious and aware. >> or just stay out of the water in that area. people will be looking for a cool place to dip their toes though this weekend. >> yes, i think so. and we've had a lot of shark sightings near our beaches. so that will be something you

will have to be concerned about and keep an eye out for. and as we head out this morning we start out this friday with temperatures in the mid 50s but this is where we're headed. up to 70 degrees at half-moon bay. morgan hill and san jose will be up to 87. concord today, 88 degrees. starting to see some 90s popping up on the map. you'll see that today in fairfield. that will become a lot more common for the inland valleys as we go into the weekend. i'll detail that coming up in less tan ten minutes. heading over to mike now. still tracking that crash on the bay bridge. >> kari, that is getting out of san francisco. we'll show you the sensor reads over there. show you these sensor reads. only a little bit of change north 101 at san jose. that's a typical pattern as we pass the 5:30 mark where traffic starts to build. getting out of san francisco we had that traffic break, traffic flowing once again but only in three lanes. still have the slow lane blocked at treasure island eastbound getting into the tunnel. that will be the lower deck. meanwhile over here in oakland we have the westbound commute and the look at the toll plaza
