"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. a clear start so far to your friday morning. kari hall joining us now. you've been clear all week that it's going to heat up. >> it starts today a little bit for the inland areas but our temperatures actually right at about average for this time of year. but it trends well above average in to the next couple of days. as you head out the door in the tri-valley it's 53 degrees. all nice and clear with highs today reaching 90 degrees. upper oughtitys for the north bay and south bay. and san francisco up to 69 degrees. still nice and cool along the coast. we will talk about beach weather for the weekend. that's coming up in a few

minutes. let's head over to mike now. more changes for the bay bridge. >> on a most days that's not a good thing at this time of day. but on a friday we have a chance for improvement. we're looking over here. we don't need much improvement. san jose just a little blip north 101. tiniest bit of slowing because the tiniest bit of traffic. a smooth there dploe, slowing through hayward and no problems upper east shore or the north bay. bay bridge, heading eastbound. crash cleared. over the last ten minutes, at speet. bay bridge toll plaza, backup and over the last ten minutes traffic starts to ease. the cash lane is looking lighter. fastrak is built up right around west grant. back to you. breaking news. this is what's left of a car after another driver crashed into it and then took off. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo live in san jose near the hear of hillsdale. damian, the driver is under arrest but how are the victims? >> reporter: the victims should be okay at this hour, laura. actually police cleared the

scene about an hour and a half ago. it happened here just after 2:00 this morning. we're along the capital expressway auto mall in south san jose in front of the nissan dealership here in this part of town. the victims' car was mangled when police responded to the call that came in as a single car accident. there was an uber and lyft sticker on the window of the car but police say it's hard to say right now if the driver was actually carrying a fare or if he was simply driving with family members in the car. they told police a car hit them and took off. officers were able to track the hit and run driver to nearby carson elementary. he will also be tested for drugs and alcohol to see if they may have been contributed to the crash. the official cause of the crash is still under investigation. >> so the vehicle left the scene and drove a mile, mile and a half to this location where officers located that person and he's got injuries and so he also was transported to the hospital.

>> reporter: the sergeant on the scene also tells me the victims were teaken to a nearby hospita after they complained of minor pain but he believes all of them will be okay. after the suspect is released from the hospital then he will be booked into santa clara county jail on hit and run charges. we're live in south san jose, damian trujillo, "today in the bay." i am the law and order candidate. >> donald trump chanling his iner richard nixon, he delivers the longest convention acceptance speech if more than four decades, clocking in at 1 hour 15 minutes for those keeping track. trump painted the picture of america crime hidden, under attack from terrorism and economically depressed. there were several themes as we mentioned in that speech for foreign policy, trump says as president he will focus on america and not on globalization. he reiterated his promise to roll back trade deals which he

says will bring back jobs. and the most important theme of his speech was defeating hillary clinton. >> this is the legacy of hillary clinton, death, destruction, terrorism, and weakness. >> trump also called for building a border wall between the u.s. and mexico. the gop nominee did not provide any details as to how he is going to deliver on his promises or how much they'll actually cost. trump was introduced by piece daughter ivanka trump. >> he will fight for you all the time, all the way, every time. >> ivanka trump tried to hammer home her father will specifically fight for equality for women. now the rnc is in the books the attention will soon turn to the democrats. we're getting our first look this morning at the stage for next week's democratic national convention. new video just in to our newsroom within the last couple of hours, the dnc gets under way

monday in philadelphia. and we may find out as soon as today who hillary clinton will pick to be her vice presidential running mate. two high ranking democrats say clinton could make her announcement later today. in an effort to shift attention away from the end of the republican convention. and build momentum heading into next week's democratic convention. virginia senator tim kaine is believed to be the front-runner. the 58-year-old has been active in the senate on foreign relations and military affairs. kaine has also built a reputation for working across the aisle as virginia's governor and mayor of richmond. sources also note that while kaine is the favorite, mrs. clinton has not yet made a final decision. breaking news this morning from overseas, a massive search is under way after an indian military plane carrying 29 people goes missing. the plane was taking passengers to islands in the bay of bengal when it lost contact with the air force. the flight was supposed to take three hours but the defense

ministry says there's no contact with the plane beyond four hours with the arrival time. the aircraft can only go four hours without refueling. new this morning, what hey shah, australia, and china have agreed to suspend the search for airlines flight 370 once the area is completely scoured. the airline was malaysian, most of the passengers were chinese, and the suspected crash site is off the coast of southwestern australia. the boeing 777 vanished more than two years ago while on a flight to beijing. the current search operation is expected to wind down by december. back in the bay area now, and police are calling the death of a woman found inside her gilroy home suspicious. about 2:00 p.m. wednesday police say they received a call from a woman saying that her daughter was driving recklessly around their neighborhood. so officers responded and when they arrived on scene they found the daughter who told them her mother had shot and killed herself unside their home. the police have not yet identified the whom who died.

san mateo county sheriff's investigators say a man tried to kidnap a 12-year-old girl in redwood city yesterday. a white man between 30 and 40 years old rode up to her on a bike at douglas and fair oaks avenue about noon. he asked if she was lost, then tried to grab her. police are providing no solid details about the man's description other than what i just told you. a former bay area police officer is behind bars and the accusations are severe. he is accuse of raping and sexually assaulting women while he was on duty. noah winchester seen in this mug shot as former san mateo police officer. he now faces nearly two dozen felony charges including rape, kidnapping, and sexual battery. authorities say that in addition to raping a woman while he was on duty, winchester also sexually assaulted at least four other women including a 17-year-old girl. the alleged assaults happened when he was a police officer for the loss rios community district in the sacramento area. >> they're supposed to be people

to be here to protect us. >> you expect more in someone like that. so it is disappointing. >> the 31-year-old was, as we mentioned, a san mateo police officer for ten months and reportedly passed extensive background checks. at 6:08. new details on the new york city police officer accuse of being drunk when he drove his car into a group of pedestrians killing a bay area college student. we've now learned that officer has been fired. the victim, drew, was from hills berg. he was a senior at m.i.t. and was interning in new york. there's a picture of his facebook page. he was walking with friends in brooklyn when rookie officer nicholas drove on to the sidewalk early saturday morning. he is basing a slew of charges including man slaukter. he was due at work four hours later. raiders linebacker aldon smith is expected to be back in a son jose courtroom today to be arraigned for violating his probation. smith was arrested last august for allegedly driving drunk, hitting a neighbors car, and

then taking off. investigators say that that violates the terms of his probation stemming from a prior conviction. smith is expected to enter a plea later today. he was of course cut from the niners following his arrest only to be picked right back up by the oakland raiders. another shark sighting in pacifica. some beachgoers feeling uneasy. for the second time in a month one spotted at the popular beach. the sighting was reported yesterday about noon. about 80 yards off the shore at lyndon moore beach. surfers saw the six-foot-long shark swimming near a group of whales. anyone headed into that water is to be extra aware of their surroundings. >> i was always told by my parents the sharks are way out past the heorizohorizon. kari hall has aing loo t your forecast. >> a lot of people will be heading to the beach, sam and laura. something that will need to be monitored indeed. a live look outside now, san jose starts out with clear skies at 61 degrees and heading up to

87. as we go into the rest of the day, it will be mostly sunny and temperatures starting to turn hot. so make sure you have that sunshine. and then this weekend it will be even hotter with highs reaching into the 90s. inland areas will see the highs in the 90s. that sticks around through all of next week. we'll talk about all of that and what to expect as we also look at the coastal areas, too. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. mike went hunting for a slower drive in the tri-valley. >> i had to hunt for a lower drive. friday night around the bay. the bay bridge eastbound cleared up. westbound, the backup at the toll plaza. we don't have any slowing for hayward for 880 but the castro valley was. a little bit of build. we do have your traditional patterns. 680 moves through sunol off the dublin interchange. there was slowing until just a couple of minutes ago here westbound 84 coming down from basically overnight road crews look like they've cleared because those speed sensors just picked up close to the limit

m. 6:14. new details on that community center fire we brought to you as breaking news all morning long yesterday. fire officials say it could be arson. the flames started just before 4:00 yesterday morning on lincoln circle in mill bay right next to taylor middle school. firefighters did everything they could to knock down that fire. they even used a drone to check for hot spots from above. authorities say someone had been setting small fires in that area. neighbors are worried. >> when the neighborhood we've been dealing with a lot of robberies. and so this seems just like another layer of concern. >> dozens of after school and summer programs that use the community center are now being moved to other locations. online center to bring people together facebook of course is known as a business for doing that but some are now accusing the social media giant of being a bad neighbor in the real world. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in menlo park to

explain. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning. facebook wants to expand here in menlo park, city of just 33,000 people. but before that happens, two non-profits say the city of menlo park has to make its own demands so that the company does not mike the affordability crisis any worse than it already is. let's show you the area that facebook wants to develop. it's an area known as the west campus, formerly, cheen chilco street and building 20. from this perspective you can see how big it really is when you look at those little cars on the freeway. the aclu and the non-profit public advocates group posted a strongly worded letter to facebook on facebook and also on an open blog claiming the expansion could further displace low-income people. facebook's proposed expansion would add to that 60-acre project site 126,000 square feet of office space, and a 200-room

hotel. additionally, facebook says it is committing to spend $7.8 million toward affordable housing and $3 million to mitigate traffic congestion and they want to build 1500 housing units at some point, 22 of which would be subsidized for eachers and firefighters and 15% of the total number of units would be sold at below market rate. the ac wil krrkaclu and the non wants to make sure menlo park doesn't worsen the affordability already impacting this city and others in the region. the city council will revisit the environmental impact proposal in december and we did talk with the mayor of menlo park yesterday. she did say that there is a big commitment on her part to make sure that people can continue to afford and live in menlo park even if they don't work at facebook. >> kris, thank you very much. one of facebook's earliest investors made history last

night at the republican national convention. >> peter thiel is the first gay to take the stage in ten years. >> and the first openly gay man in ten years to say he is gay. that's the first time it happened, to say i right in the convention speech. probably more remarkably only major silicon valley name to openly support donald trump. the billionaire talked about our special spot in the economy last night. take a look. >> where i work in silicon valley it's hard to see where america has gone wrong. my industry has made a lot of progress in computers and in software and, of course, it's made a lot of money. but silicon valley is a small place. drive out to sacramento or even across the bridge to oakland and you won't see the same prosperity. that's just how small it is. >> now to be fair the median home price in oakland is $423,000. but thiel's larger point is worst talking about. still those who still have not felt the effects of the economic

boom. despite the fact the unemployment rate is at historic lows there are still those left behind and they have become donald trump's most passionate supporters. peter thiel made his money founding fafound ing paypal. also one of the earliest investors in face pook. he sits on the board of directors at facebook as well. here's a billionaire who doesn't like donald trump at all. jeff besos, founder of amazon, third richest person in the world according to bloomberg billionaire index. richest person in the world is bill gates and then followed by amancio ortega of spain, clothing magnet. and then you've got jeff bezos and i would be far down on the list. the other thing this morning -- >> would we be on the list? >> it does appear as if verizon has the winning bid on yahoo! this according to bloomberg. i don't know if we will hear anything in the next 12 minutes or so before the market opens.

shamrock shake. >> true. >> those gilroy garlic festivals is coming up next weekend. it's going to be just in time for that. >> all comes together. >> it does. >> it's going to be hot for that festival? >> it looks like it. start out with the heat building this weekend. it just sticks with us for several days. so looks like the 90s will be hanging around for the inland valleys for a while. and you want to enjoy today. we still have a low clouds and fog rolling back in san francisco. here's the view of the golden gate bridge. you can't see the top span of the bridge but at least the drivers are making it through with some clear visibility and that is what you can expect for a couple more hours before it clears out. and we are going to see those highs reaching into the upper 60s today. up to 69 degrees. right now it's 55. oakland is at 58. 46 in napa. temperatures cool down there. we have more of a northerly wind coming in today and as we go into the rest of the day the wind speeds pick up to 10 to 15 miles an hour but it's not the onshore flow bringing a nice

cool breeze. these winds coming in from the north will be very warm and dry. and that's the kind of wind that will allow our valley temperatures to really heat up this weekend. so in san jose this is what to expect. up to 80 degrees. by noon. and then it turns hot at 4:00 as we see those highs reaching into the upper 80s. all of our microclimates will be up to 90 in the south bay and los gatos and half-moon bay it will be at 70 degrees in the marina district, 63 degrees today. 85 in napa. oakland, 75. and livermore today a high of 89 degrees. so high pressure continues to build. and that will cause the heat to first start in southern california. and then move into the bay area as we go into this weekend. 90s and with unh un100 degrees, that's what you can expect for the inland temperatures. in san francisco not much of a change. it still stays nice near the close line. low 70s this weekend. a lot of sunshine. and then in the valleys we're uk aing up to 95 degrees by tomorrow. you'll definitely want to find

something to try to cool off. upper 90s continue into the start of next week. now as we head over to mike, you're looking at some slowing at a short stretch. >> very short stretch. in fact, probably our shortest interstate on this whole map. at the bay, smooth flow. south bay, volume increase for 101. nothing dramatic. no slows for the peninsula, either, or getting there on the san mateo or dumbarton bridges. even this is improving. the armily burst showed a big slow down at the castro valley y. interstate 238. that's the whole of it right the there. and looking at a slower drive just a bit down toward wynton and hayward. let's just call it that stretch right there. meanwhile approaching the bay bridge, nice flow of traffic as well. bay bridge toll plaza, that has a slow stretch as well. oh, look at that over by the toll plaza. we have the fastrak lanes here and overnight road crew, morning road crew, there's our spider on the lens. that's the most activity going on because folks driving in to san francisco are looking just

6:25. nbc bay area responds to another successful week of putting money back into people's pockets. >> here is a consumer investigator chis chmura to recap two closed cases. >> brian in novato agreed to buy the hurricane mop 360 for $67. but his credit card was charged $81. brian says he asked to be refunded the difference. but was refused. when we contacted telebrands it said we spoke with the customer service team and it appears there was a system glitch. telebrands gave brian a full refund. he's ecstatic. he said this may have appeared to be an inconsequential case but for me it was huge. it was about principal. about right and wrong. and since i watch every penny i spend it was quite significant. we agree. and that's why we're here. our big fish of the week was helping dori hess. she paid 18 grand for a used acura but the dealer never registered it.

"today in the bay's" damian trujillo is there speaking with investigators. amids the national protesting right now grief and reflection today. the first of three funerals will be held for the baton rouge police officer shot and killed sunday in an ambush. authorities expect members of law enforcement agencies from across the country to attend today's funeral for officer matthew gerald. the 41-year-old was a former marine and blackhawk crew chief. and he was a first year police officer. he leaves behind a wife and two children. funerals for the other two officers are scheduled for tomorrow and monday respectfully. san francisco police investigating a new threat against their own officers just days after a separate threat came against the chief. investigators say an anonymous caller phoned the station aid said he would offer a $15,000 reward for anyone who kills a

member of the sfpd. that has the department on high alert after the deadly shooting of officers in dallas and baton rouge. tension over recent police shootings of african-american men boiling over on to the streets of oakland once again. >> hundreds of people took to the streets last night. it was in a. national day of action in 80 cities across the u.s. black lives matter protesters marched from police headquarters to city hall. there have been weeks of tension since the high profile killings of black men at the hands of police. protesters want to make sure the community is demanning change. >> for a lot of people of color it's something that's -- you were grown in to. you grew into a discomfort around police. >> we want to defund the oakland police department by 50%. we want that 50% to go toward other programming that we know from the research and data actually leads to safer communities. >> organizers say that there will be more protests and calls of action in the weeks to come. international news now. french authorities say the man behind the deadly bastille

attack in nice did not work alone. candles flickered at a memorial marking one week since 84 people were killed during a beachfront celebration turned massacre. a paris prosecutor says the truck driver who carried out the attack had been plotting it for more than a year. authorities rounded up five other suspects who were all now behind bars. they face preliminary terrorism charges and were linked to this case through cellphone calls and text messages. kensington police are offering a new $15,000 reward in an unsolved homicide. early in 2011erik elliott was sleeping in kensington park when several attackers beat him to death. family members say they're grateful police are not letting this case grow cold. >> it was tough. i've then erik for about five years. since i started with this department. it was tough for me to get a call to that location not knowing who it was and finding his body there. >> police say that these cars may be the key to cracking the

case. they are particularly interested in a dark colored four-door honda civic or dodge neon with a white racing stripe. laura, a second life now lost in a family tragedy out of vallejo. a mother succumbed to her injuries that she suffered from a house fire in play. the woman and her 5-year-old son were inside the home when the flames engulfed the house killing the boy. the boy ea's father is accuse o intentionally setting the fire. firefighters now say two separate fires burning at the altamont landfill could burn for a few more days. that landfill is on the outskirts of alameda county between livermore and tracy. the first fire started wednesday, the second last night. no word on how they started but firefighters say a burning pile of landscaping feels is helping the generate a larger amount of smoke. brush fires will be a kirn this weekend as we head into higher temperatures, kari. you've got your forecast for us. >> hot and dry for a prolonged

period. yes, fire danger will be going up. we've seen the clouds moving in san francisco. here's the view from over the clouds from san bruno mountain. it looks like we're in an airplane. temperatures are in the upper 50s and 69 degrees. there will be clearing as we go through the day. the clouds hang out earl lid and then sun nid and warm later on today. this weekend it will be heating up with little to no morning fog. and we've been talking about the heat moving in. but in san francisco we'll have some perfect beach weather with highs reaching near the 70s and we will have some upper 90s inland. we will talk about all of that and the temperature spread. that's coming up in less than ten minutes. heading over to mike to see what's happening as you head out for the commute. >> not a lot happening. the south bay is showing a build. so we'll focus on that for now because the bay bridge metering lights are on but nothing dramatic. to the south bay with the only real change in the sensors other than hayward and 880. 87 and 101, the biggest change. a little blip here for 280 at

two major developments related to the zika virus. florida health officials are looking into the cases. two florida cases appear to have no connections to travel to zika-infected areas. so far all other cases in the u.s. are from people who were infected while outside of the country. it comes as brazilian scientists express fear they may have found a second species of mosquito that can transmit the virus. if you're trying to get out of the country this summer and you don't have your passport already, you may really have to scramble. there's a backlog of passport applications. the wait is six weeks more.

high bid. bloomberg now reporting verizon is the likely winner. and that will we'll hear something in the next few days. if the announcement were to happen soon, it would likely come this afternoon after the closing bell. companies generally don't make big announcements while the markets are still open. speaking of verizon, the company says if you use too much data in its unlimited plan it will switch you to the limited plan which means someone either the company or the customer, doesn't seem to really understand what unlimited means. verizon says we are notifying a small group of cuss hers on unlimited plans who use an extraordinary amount of data that they must move to one of the new verizon plans by august 31st. the dow snapping nine-day winning streak on thursday. the markets are mildly lower again today. twitter just signed a deal to carry hundreds of college football games. it's not helping twitter. the stocks down better than 2% this morning. japan just started playing pokemon go. the game finely released there.

we're starting to see some 90s appear here on the map. with mostly some upper 80s for concord, livermore, as well as san jose and morgan hill. the 90s will become more common. so if you are looking for a perfect weather in san francisco this morning, as you head out, in san francisco we will be 54 to 60 degrees. perfect dog walking weather. and looking at today's forecast, heading to the beach. in pacifica, low 70s. winds in from northwest at five to 15 miles an hour. half-moon bay at 70 degrees. a little bit warmer down in santa cruz with a high today of 76 degrees. very comfortable. not so comfortable though in loss gatt toss "play of the day." 90 degrees. 83 and 63 in the marina district. oakland will be at 75. and pleasanton, high of 90 degrees. if you know anyone or are planning to head to hawaii this weekend, well, we are looking at tropical storm darby. and this is expected to move

very close to hawaii. may even produce some very heavy rainfall over the next several days. and then it starts to curve to the north. so something that may be making some headlines around there. and may also delay some flights. looking here in san francisco, nice calm weather. highs reaching into the upper 60s today. low 70s for the weekend. and in the inland areas, up to 89 today but tomorrow and sunday will be hot with mid 90s. and staying there as we go into next week. so the high temperatures will take a long time before they get out of here. as we head over to mike now, he's tracking the crash now in the north bay. >> won't take a long time but it will slow you down a bit to get past this one. the south bay, we showed you a little build, typical patterns for the northbound direction for a friday. dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge. build off 880 coming out of the east bay. north bay, southbound 101 does have a good deal of slowing

a driver is under arrest accused of a crashing into a car - and then fleeing the scene in san a driver is under arrest accused of crashing into a car and fleeing the scene in san jose. >> "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live where the crash happened. damian, by looking at the video we've seen this morning it's hard to believe the victims inside one of the cars survived. >> everyone is pretty lucky after that accident. it happened here in front of the nissan dealership on capital expressway. police cleared the scene a couple of hours ago. we're at the capital expressway auto mall where it turns into hillsdale avenue here in san jose. the victim's car was pretty mangled as you see right after the accident. this is capital expressway auto mall again. there was an uber and lyft sticker on the window of the car but it's hard to say if the driver was carrying a fare or if he was simply driving with family members in the car. they told police someone crashed into them. police were able to track the other driver to a nearby carson elementary. he will be tested for drugs and

even upper 90s for the end of the weekend. >> mike had just been pointing out a traffic accident up in oakland. >> so this is going on in oakland. another one also in the north bay. so two crashes. but overall traffic flows lightly. we'll shee you first of all the live camera by the coliseum and we do have it zoomed in toward the crash northbound 880 as you get toward oakland. i put the wrong camera code in. they're sorting that out. oakland northbound 880, fast lane blocked by the coliseum. jamming up from just about 66 up to the scene but the growing commute shows more slowing there. that's the worst of it for the east bay. and then as we zoom out you see no major problems there. there's the slowing for the east bay from the coliseum up towards the crash. and then we see in the north bay southbound, slowing but looks like from the traffic pattern the crash may have cleared in the last couple seconds. that is a struggle from san leandro -- san rafael, i should say. once your south of there a little bit of fog at the golden
