atheist. there's been a riff along. bernie sanders campaign believe it was rigged, as he said, in the beginning in favor of hillary clinton with the debate schedule. is this a problem this week? >> it is. it confirms the central intuition behind why a socialist movement was able to get pretty far and why a white nationalist movement has captured the political party on the right. and that intuition is that remote, unaccountable in places like new york and washington are changing the country behind the country's back. when you have 19,000 e mails coming out that show that was what was happening it doesn't help. sanders is out of the game. i think in a weird way it helps the remaining extremist movement that is remaining in power and the trump campaign that now can go to people again and again and play to people's fears and take the true intuition, which is

true, and leverage it to start making a bunch of false and very dangerous and frankly unconstitutional visions appealing to people. >> and the trump made that argument explicitly in cleveland, which is to say the system is rigged so the people in charge like hillary clinton. now bernie sanders makes that argument. this sunday between the two conventions, i think a good time to take a deep breath, pause, figure out where we are in the race. we've gotten through cleveland. i want to read a tweet. a guy who has gotten it right and data driven. he writes don't think people are really grasping how plausible it is that trump could become president. it's a close election right now. you put stock in it? >> absolute my. a lot of voters are viewing it as a lesser of two evils. it depends on who you like better or least in terms of going to the voting booth. i want to go back to the point about the dnc with the wikileaks. it's not a meta narrative.

it's about ethics and the democratic party. the dnc are supposed to be neutral in these proceedings, and the wikileaks dmonl straits it might not have been the case as going all the way to the stop there's early reporting that wikileaks -- debbie wasserman schultz possibly being taken off the list. >> and you have trump invoking bernie sanders speech. saying i said the things that bernie sanders. >> there's a feeling and there's a weird feeling growing over these years, i think, people feeling powerless because of a lot of economics shift. that feels is accompanied by a feeling there's a conspiracy somewhere that is causing this in my life. it doesn't help when that proves true. >> and the message they're both delivering. bernie sanders and donald trump, there's a rigged system is impactive for people in that

position. you know, trump even this morning tweeting about bernie sanders tweeting about what happened. he's very on top of the news cycle in that regard. i think when you look at the race, when you look at what nate silver is tweeting and where things are not necessarily nationally, we see more distance between clinton and trump but in the battle ground states like, for example, ohio. i think back to my year and change covering the primaries. at the beginning nobody thought donald trump had a chance. we're now at the beginning of the general election season donald trump said to me and others my campaign didn't start until after the convention. this is it. let's see over the next month where the polls go in places like florida and pennsylvania. >> i would add donald trump has been consistently trying to reach the bernie sanders voters by talking about the system being rigged. for the past couple of months i would think, he's probably not going to get the burner bros who might be angry about what they saw in wikileaks but he might get the disenchangetized voters. >> unless those people stay

supporter, should you be worried she's going to lose? >> i think it's a fair -- a real enough possibility, as nate silver, the deity of those predictions said this week. for the dnc stuff, for the sanders people holding out, for the people who think tim kaine's speech body is not good enough. >> there's people? >> there are those people. i think we all need to focus a little bit. because we're in the game of trying to be neutral and fair. i read and i've been a journalist for 11 years and played by the rules in fairness. this time there is on the ballot a gu log referendum. but it's not about hillary. this election is supposed to be about hillary. it's not about hillary. it's not about kaine or the dnc or gary johnson. the liberal american constitutional order we have taken for granted for a long time is on the ballot in a serious way. that kind of ugliness you saw is funny and there's a lot of scary

things behind it. and i don't -- i struggle to figure out how to talk about it. i think we all do struggle in a way to talk about it that is honest and fair but provides a fair warning. this is not normal times, and this happens to perfectly good countries. we have to be very careful in the next three months. >> how much of that, amy, is the power of donald trump's message versus the inadequate of hillary clinton and her campaign and the fact that 30% of the country thinks she's honest and trust worthy. there are a lot of people in the democratic party that said we found the one candidate who couldn't beat donald trump >>well, that's right. you talk about the constitutional order a lot of conservatives put hillary clinton, you know, in that bucket or, you know, on the ballot as somebody who is challenging the constitutional order. >> do you think they are equally threatened? >> i think it depends on your perspective. i'm no fan of donald trump. don't get me wrong about that. but neither am i a fan of

hillary clinton and a lot of voters are in the same place. and you talk about even in the democratic party only 40% of democrats would call her trust worthy. >> what does a voter like you do? >> that's a good question. i'm still searching for the answer. i think i might bring in my mom. >> you think they're equally a threat to the american constitutional order? >> i think hillary clinton has tendencies that undermine transparency, that undermine rule of law, that undermine separation of powers in terms of the executive branch. we know when she tried to be in charge of health care as first lady she did it behind closed doors. there's a long list of bull let points. i think donald trump has authoritarian tendencies that scare me. i feel like we're looking at two not appealing choices. >> last time at the table we talked with somebody who didn't know what they were going to

we finish this morning as we do at this time every week with some predictions for the week ahead. as we've been talking about all morning, the democratic national convention begins tomorrow in philadelphia. we predict hillary clinton will attempt to borrow some of the magic of the repub can convention with a wwe style entrance and a wednesday night diss speech from ted cruz. today is the induction ceremony for the new class of the baseball hall of fame where ken griffey junior and mike will achieve bronze. he won't be inducted again this year, pete rose will have a big day of his own down at the otb with a hot tip on a nice philly in the third race at aqueduct.
