the heat has been turned up on the democrats as well. >> in a lot of ways. it's steamy here and you mentioned a lot going on in the democratic party with the abrupt resignation of the head of the democratic party, that's going on. we have this new poll that shows trump leading the race, that same poll had him many points behind clinton a week ago. we're here at independence mall in front of the historic independence hall. this is a city of course steeped in history. about 20 minutes south of here the wells fargo center where the convention will be held the next four nights. and matt, in case you wondered the declaration of independence was signed there at the wells fargo center, in 1776. i've been studying. >> you got a little mixed up but most is right. we'll be back with you in a second. let's talk about this breaking news overnight, though, another deadly shooting at a florida nightclub, this time ft. myers. kerry sanders made his way to the scene.

what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, matt. at least two are dead and the death toll could climb, 16 wounded in a shoot-out here right in front of a club called club blu. this comes six weeks after the shooting in orlando. this is again another florida community on edge. terrifying moments overnight as gun fire erupted at a nightclub in ft. myers, florida. >> automatic gun fire at club blu. people are scattering. >> reporter: police responding to the shooting in the parking lot of club blu bar and grill. found several victims suffering gunshot wounds. two people died and at least 14 others were shot with injuries ranging from minor to life threatening. authorities say three people have been detained for questioning, one of them five blocks away from the nightclub where shots were fired. this morning police say the motive is still unknown, and they are actively canvassing the

area looking for other persons who may have been involved in this incident. the authorities are continuing their investigation here. meantime, the club has issued a statement that says in part, we are deeply sorry for all involved, we tried to give the teens what we thought was a safe place to have a good time. there was armed security as well as full security inside and out. among those wounded in this, children as young as 12 years old. the authorities are saying this has nothing to do with terrorism, but in the light of what's happened in orlando, of course, this has people quite concerned. matt. >> two dead, 14 others injured. thank you. let's go back to savannah now. >> ahead of today's start of the democratic convention there is a new poll out this morning as we mentioned shows donald trump getting a big bump from the republican convention in cleveland. look at these numbers, trump now leading hillary clinton 48 to 45.

clinton led in that exact same poll by seven points a week ago. and the convention is kicking off today amid controversy. debbie wasserman schultz announcing her plans to step down rather unexpectedly. andrea mitchell is here with the latest. good morning. good to see you here in philly. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. debbie wasserman schultz was booed off the stage at a caucus of delegates from her state of florida undercutting the party theme of the convention opening united together. bernie sanders supporters marching in philadelphia demanding revolution. what they got was a stunning resignation under pressure of congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz. the party chair who will step downpour once the convention is over. only 24 hours earlier she was headlining the miami rollout of the new clinton/kaine ticket. >> i'm with her. >> reporter: now taking the fall

for a trove of e-mails posted by wikileaks showing apparent party evidents to sabotage the sanders campaign. one from wasserman schultz saying sanders isn't going to be president. another from a staffer suggesting they play up that sanders is not a religious jew writing i think i read he is an athei atheist. clinton disavowing to "60 minutes" any knowledge of the messages. >> i didn't know anything about it and i haven't read those but i'm adaptly opposed to any one bringing religion into our political process. >> reporter: the sanders campaign saying party leaders must be impartial during the primaries and this year were not. >> clearly, what we experienced during the campaign was real bias. i this i the chairwoman did the right thing. >> reporter: another for sanders who will speak at the convention. clinton's choice of tim kaine. >> his political views are not my political views.

he is more conservative than i am. >> reporter: kaine in an intervideo conducted mostly in spanish tried to smooth over differences. >> after a campaign there's going to be bruised feelings. >> reporter: donald trump relishing the infighting tweeting the democrats are in a total meltdown. after the republicans bashed clinton for a week she told "60 minutes." >> i seem to be the only unifying theme that they had. there was no positive agenda. it was a very dark, divisive campaign. >> when i see this, you know, crooked hillary or the lock her up, it's ridiculous. >> reporter: now democrats are trying to keep wasserman schultz off the convention stage hoping speakers from michelle obama will get them back on message. savannah. >> new jersey senator cory booker a finalist for the vice presidential pick is scheduled

to speak tonight. senator, good morning. good to see you. >> you as well. >> in steamy philadelphia. let's talk about what's going on with the party. was it the correct decision for debbie wasserman schultz to resign? >> absolutely. i think looking forward we need to unify. we don't need folks that are a lightning rod for division. >> she is chairing the convention, include her taking the stage, gaveling it in and out. her statement she plans to address the delegates. you think she should or that might create a moment not unlike ted cruz at the republican convention? >> i don't know the details how that is going to play out but my hope is that we are going to show america who we are, which is two candidates bernie sanders, hillary clinton who have come together and focus on leading america in a unified way. >> to push you do you have an opinion whether or not it would be productive for her to take the stage? do you worry about a moment that shows anything but unity? >> i think that the reason why she resigned was try to take

that off the table and i think she's going to do the right thing by the party. i believe she's not trying to be a point of division. i think how it works out in a way that benefits our party uni unity. >> you think this e-mail scandal which shows the dnc had the finger on the scale for hillary clinton dhaugs disturb this fragile party unity? >> i play independent lots of games where i felt referees were benefitting the other team. doesn't stop the competitors. two that ran a great campaign. hillary clinton got millions of more votes. i think happened was the right thing of it bernie sanders agen. i have seen her incorporate bernie sanders' ideas and one of the pillars important with me, with elizabeth warren making college more af forwardable, the things that we see as major pillars of our campaign, i think is a good thing.

a great contest of ideas and in many ways it was a melding of our party. >> before i leave this, hillary clinton's campaign manager said something interesting on a show yesterday that he thinks the russians who are accused of actually being behind this hack, are trying to influence the american election because they are hacking into dnc e-mails but not rnc e-mailings. you have information or opinion? >> i no idea. i'm not worried about the russians. the biggest threat is donald trump's candidacy and what that will do. >> there is a new poll out that shows trump did get a convention bump up 3 points. but more significantly, a 10-point swing. he was behind 7 a week ago. are you nervous? >> i'm not. this is early polls, i have seen them go all ways. this is a time our country is going to have to choose which way to go. we've seen what the republicans offer, a dark view of america, a lot of vile and negativity, it's time we elevate our nation for

look, the only piece of good news out of this for democrats, jeff weaver, bernie sanders campaign manager told me yesterday the best thing is her resignation. and that could calm the waters today, without her resignation today could have been worse or as the assumption, could be worse. let's see. sanders' team may be satisfied that they finally got her resignation, something they have been calling for. i think we have to find out what sanders delegates respond. we'll find out today. >> we don't know whether she is going to gavel in the convent n convention, plans to address the delegates. you can have a moment on the floor. >> in talking to the sanders delegates, they are happy that she's resigning but believe me, you put her on that stage today, they are not sitting on their hands. she said in that statement, you were asking senator booker, she intends not to gavel to order but address the delegates. there is time to reconsider, time for somebody to get in her ear and say you might want to

think about what that's going to look like. if she thinks she can get out of it i gave a speech, that's going to be a scene. >> by the way she's -- may lose re-election. she has a primary, by somebody who sanders supported. that moment offing booed at the convention. that's a tv ad ready to be made. it would be a big political mistake. >> those thinking that this is inside politics, what's the bottom line? if the dnc had been more impartial would that have made a difference for bernie sanders? >> i asked the sanders campaign. do you believe this cost you the nomination? and nobody will go that far. but you know what, go back, remember the primary calendar and the debate calendar, the fact that the republicans were looking for prime time t democrats looking for saturday morning can tune venues, but you go back there and you can't help but wonder if you are a sanders person what if the debates had been a bigger deal. and then you never know.

also this morning germany has been shaken by a fourth attack in the past week, this time an apparent suicide bombing in the city of ansbach. officials say a 27-year-old syrian who had been denied asylum blew himself up sunday after security workers barred him from entering the festival. 12 people were injured. officials said the bomber's request was rejected a year ago but he was allowed to remain in germany because of the strife in syria. the attack comes two days after a gunman killed nine people at a mall in munich. ap out of control wild fire that's raging north of los angeles. it's already destroyed nearly two dozen homes and forced thousands from their homes. on the front line, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, mattment evacuations here have continued to expand, there are now more than 20,000 people that have been forced from their homes.

this fire also claiming one life. and overnight fire crews holding back flames in several communities still in this fire's path. in the hillside towns north of los angeles another sleepless night. hundreds watching a ridge as it turns into a wall of flames. >> it's like a war zone here. and you can't stop looking. >> reporter: the so-called sand fire going through brush at incredible speed. the burn area tripling over the weekend, nowhere close to contained. >> like someone threw a switch, all of a sudden the wind changed and picked up by 20 to 30 miles an hour. >> reporter: hundreds evacuated and homes are burning. so far at least 18 houses destroyed, while firefighters and homeowners saved hundreds of others. >> another five minutes. >> reporter: frank protects what cannot be replaced. >> no time to wait for a trailer. >> reporter: some of the scenes surreal.

sort of excessive heat warning or advisory. so what is it going to feel like? through philadelphia if we hit 98 that could break a record for today. but the feels like temperature when you factor in the humidity will feel like 106. new york city like 101. in new england it's going to feel like between 90 and 100 degrees. down south it's even hotter, temperatures in raleigh today about 97 degrees, norfolk 100, the feel likes closer to 110. there is a cold front starting to cool things down back through the midwest. minneapolis will drop to 88, chicago 84. still humid but you'll notice improvements through the next couple days. st. louis will drop down in the 80s by the end of the week, chicago, beautiful on thursday at 82 degrees. in the northeast we'll start to see things cool down sooner than across the mid-atlantic. it stays hot all week through d.c. and philadelphia, new york city we should drop to 88 by friday. your local forecast is coming up in 30 seconds.

it's 7:30 now. monday morning. 25th of july, 2016. we have a happy crowd starting the week with us at rockefeller plaza. they're happy because matt is back in new york holding down the fort. by the way, we're here at independence hall here in philadelphia. this is where the democratic national convention kicks off today and those are six of my closest friends, matt. i expect big crowds when you come later this week. >> it's early. the people attending the convention are just arriving in philadelphia. i was listening before on our in-house audio system and i heard you asking for a look at the liberty bell. have you found it? >> i did. i wanted to compare my current size to the liberty bell.

>> did you find it on ground level in that building there? >> there's a big crack, did you know that? let us set the scene in this historic city. we're here on independence mall downtown philly five miles north of the wells fargo center. that's where the actual convention is taking place. it's normally home to the philadelphia flyers and the 76ers but this week the democrats have the floor. just like we saw at the rnc, each night of the convention has a theme. supposed to showcase the clinton's campaign vision of a united america. tonight's theme, united together focusing on struggles and future of american families and there are some heavy hitters among the speakers tonight. senator elizabeth warren, first lady michelle obama and vermont senator bernie sanders and of course sanders supporters will be a major headliner at the dnc all week long. this morning republican nominee donald trump is trying to court sanders voters while weighing in on a number of things including hillary clinton's choice for a running mate. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is on the convention floor with that part of the story. peter, good morning.

>> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. we've now moved up into the stands next to the vermont delegation seats. this of course is bernie sanders' home state. his appeal has grown wider than that. as sanders gets prepared to take the stage tonight, what he says could go a long way to bringing together the democratic party even as donald trump tries to stoke the party's divisions. after trying to unite his own party, donald trump look to divide and rile up sanders supporters. >> the choice of tim kaine was a slap in the face to bernie sanders and everybody. i was shocked. i love it from my standpoint. >> reporter: trump unleashing a weekend tweet storm predicting sanders' supporters will fight. if not, their blood, sweat and tears was a waste of time. kaine stands for the opposite. the kaine pick is a sore spot for progressives. >> his political views are not my political views. he's more conservative than i

am. >> reporter: still trump is hardly the kill them with kindness strategy. days after name checking with the rnc. >> just like it was rigged against bernie sanders. >> reporter: ripping into him as exhausted, weak and pathetic. what will sanders primary voters do? a recent poll found 11% back trump. 76% for clinton including sanders himself. >> my job is to see that donald trump is defeated and hillary clinton is elected. >> reporter: trump now taking sides in another public battle defending roger ailes who is ousted from fox news and accused of sexually harassing at least two dozen women. accusations ailes denies. >> it's very sad. he's a good person. i found him to be a very good person. >> reporter: already facing a major deficit with female voters, trump questioning the accusers' credibility. >> when they write books recently released saying wonderful things about him and now they say horrible things about him.

>> trump is teasing about a potential ailes partnership. >> a lot of people think he'll run my campaign. >> reporter: donald trump has not said whether or not a lot of people are right. as for bernie sanders, what's best needed to help unify the party may have just happened. at least according to sanders' campaign manager jeff weaver. he says that's the resignation of party chair debbie wasserman-schultz and that may bring bernie delegates over and more inclined to support hillary clinton. savannah? >> peter alexander, thank you. let's go back to chuck todd on this whole issue. trump has not exactly been subtle. he's going after these sanders' voters. there's a subcategory of those voters who like the rhetoric on bernie sanders. could trump get a cache of sanders voters? >> it's not about being upset at the party. he's trying to woo them on an issue and trump said it, trade.

if you look, that's where there was common ground. and that is where there is sort of a similar message which is, hey, globalization has been bad for america. sanders was making a version of that case and so is trump. this is more than trump needling. this is trump looking for numbers and by the way, he does need them if he's going to win. >> sanders was on your show "meet the press" yesterday. it does seems like he's trying to send a clear signal to supporters that trump is not your guy. >> if you're the clinton folks, you're relieved that he's doing that. he never took that bait. for a long time during the primaries, trump would try to sort of put his arm around sanders and sanders always pushed it away. >> he mentioned sanders in his acceptance speech. >> again, it goes back that there is common ground. >> do you feel like sanders is being a good soldier? even though he registered his discontent with what had happened at the dnc, he didn't seem to be fanning the flames.

while the focus is on democrats here in philadelphia today, on the republican side donald trump who is back out on the campaign trail is seeing a bit of a bounce after his convention. a new poll out this morning, savannah, now shows him up three points over hillary clinton. >> all right. hallie jackson inside the hall. let's go back to new york and the other morning's top stories from sheinelle jones. good morning. >> just six weeks after the orlando nightclub massacre, police in florida are on the scene of another deadly club shooting. nbc's kerry sanders is in ft. myers. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. gunfire broke out at a club known as club blu. two people were killed. at least 16 wounded. tragically, this was teen night so some of the victims are as young as 12 years old. the authorities say at this point there are no indications of terrorism. the club has released a statement that says in part, we are deeply sorry for all

involved. we tried to give teens what we thought was a safe place to have a good time. there was armed security as well as full security inside and out. but as you point out, this is yet one more tragic shooting at a nightclub. it does not appear to be terrorism related as was the case in orlando where 49 people were killed and 53 were wounded just six weeks ago. sheinelle? >> so sad. thank you. police in dallas are investigating the death of a 3-year-old boy found inside a hot car sunday in a church parking lot. the outside temperature was at least 98 degrees. officials say the boy's family was at a bible service when the parents realized one of their five children was missing. the father ran outside and came back with his unconscious son in his arms. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. there was tragedy this weekend at a wildlife park in china. a siberian tiger killed one

woman and severely wounded another. >> reporter: a family of four, a man, two women and a child were touring beijing's 6,000 acre wildlife world. it's the largest safari park of its kind in china where animals are allowed to roam freely and visitors can drive through in their car. the man and one of the women both seated in the front got into an argument. at that point she gets out and calmly walks to the driver's side. the driver opens the door and they start talking. the woman doesn't appear to realize the danger until just a split second before the tiger pounces. the man jumps out to help. while the first woman is being attacked, the second woman also tries to help. but the tiger goes after her. within seconds, park staff arrive on the scene but it's too late. the first woman is badly mauled. sustaining serious injuries. the woman who got out to help was killed by the tiger almost instantly. according to officials, visitors

are forbidden from getting out of their cars. a spokesman for the park had no comment on the attack. both the man and the child are said to be okay. two years ago a security guard at the same park was killed by a tiger after he stepped out of his patrol vehicle. amazing video shot this weekend shows the moment when a small plane with mechanical problems fell from the sky over connecticut. it crash landed on the roof of a house. look at this. people at the scene were able to pull the pilot from the wreckage and stabilize him before he was air lifted to the hospital. nobody on the ground was injured. guys? >> that tiger. >> i can't watch that video. >> heartbreaking. >> sheinelle, thank you very much. coming up next, a bizarre jersey destroying outburst that landed a star baseball player on the bench. plus those hacked dnc e-mails revealing why air ana grande wasn't allowed to perform. >> "the price is right."

with filling in there. if i didn't, i would scrap them with my teeth and eating the filling. we add just a little bit of butter. >> this is a healthy recipe i can tell already. >> if i were doing this for real, i would take two tablespoons of this cookie set aside for later and it's a magical ingredient. get that nice and moist. you take a little bit to make sure it sticks together so it will work. you just put it inside -- >> how thick do you want that to be inside? >> you just want to make sure there are no moist clumps or dry clumps. >> thick in terms of here? >> you want to go up the sides. thin enough layer on the bottom that you have enough cookie to run it up the sides. it doesn't have to look perfect up top. jagged edges. make it look evil. >> what's in here? >> that's heavy cream, sugar and salt. you get it just to a boil and as that's happening, you have some

milk and gelatin and you want to sprinkle gelatin evenly over cool milk. it helps it set up. we'll put chocolate in there, too. the gelatin just gives it smoother mouth feel and when you cut it, it stands up to attention and looks gorgeous. >> we have people downstairs digging into this. >> it's so good. i need a big glass of milk. >> going right to hell. >> that's why i did it. >> look how cool that looks. a pattern on top. >> now it's bloomed in this one which means that the gelatin is saturated. if it doesn't get like this, you'll bet hard bits of gelatin. after this comes to a boil, you take it off and add your gelatin and stir that up. thank you, sir. you add vanilla. and then this is vanilla bean paste which is my favorite. you can use regular. you can use other extracts. if you like orange, chocolate, that's perfect. dump in that chocolate. i'll do that and you stir.

you just make sure that gets melty enough that it is melted. melty is pretend. here we have it. you want to strain it. here's espresso powder that makes it more chocolatey. >> did you chill something here? >> yes. i bake the crust for ten minutes. you don't have to bake the crust. if it's hot and you are like, forget it. i'm not going turn on the oven. ten minutes to make it crispy and then sieve it into the crust. and it will come right through. and if there are any bits of gelatin leftover, they'll get stopped by the sieve. it will go a lot faster in case you're impatient like i am.

this is swiss meringue. i add a little bit of salt. i do. i swear. >> it's humid. >> and then you put it on top of hot water and whisk it until it's melted and reaches 160 degrees because that kills the nasty in there. no raw eggs. and then you whip it on high until it's nice and fluffy. and you just dump this gorgeousness on top of the pie. you could pipe it and be fancy. no. i just like to do it. you can also torch it. >> i want to take a piece. guys, what's the verdict? >> unbelievable. >> it's so indulgent and delicious. >> and there are other options. put peanut butter mousse or strawberry mousse on top. >> that's attractive, matt. >> this is really good. >> we saw that. >> i didn't want it to fall on the floor. thank you so much. fun to work with you. we have recipes for this and

==topvo== bay area fighterfighters are now helping out on the good morning. 8:56 on your monday. bay area firefighters are out helping on the front lines of a massive wildfire burning in monterrey county north of big sur. the fire has burn good 11,000 acres so far. right now firefighters say it's only about 5% contained. that fire has destroyed six homes since it started on friday in the state park in the carmel valley. about 1,600 homes in total are

it's a very, very wet heat. and that's why we have these heat advisories in effect. when you add in the humidity, it feels like it's that much warmer. we could even break a record high temperature today in philadelphia. the forecast is about 97 degrees. again, it will feel like it's 106 later on today. new york city will feel like 101. hartford will feel like 100. you go farther south, it's warmer and more humid and it feels even worse. it's important to note that you need to drink a lot of water, stay inside during that 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. time frame and watch out for pets and elderly, too. we do have a cold front that will help cool us down. it takes until the end of the week before it hits the northeast. back through the midwest, chicago should hit 84 we are in for some clouds that are quickly clearing along the coastline and some sunshine inland. it's 62 degrees right now in san francisco and the trivalley 66 degrees and a mild 57 for the
