more hot weather. we'll talk about that air quality coming up. let's head over to mike tracking an issue on highway 24. >> most ft bay looking good. most of the freeways and how ways as far as your speeds go. zoom in over toward highway 24. it's eastbound getting away from the 13 interchange and the maze. but there is annish issue, disabled vehicle from what i understand. and that could be a factor. but again, light traffic flow counter commute and not in the caldecott tunnel so that's better news but heading over in that direction. meanwhile, the rest of the bay moves well. no backup at the toll plaza. no problems except for a little fog across the golden gate bridge. back to you. new this morning, the south bay one person in the hospital after a truck fire that spread to an adjacent hillside. this is video shot overnight from stevens canyon road in cupertino. fire crews say when they arrived they had to launch an aggressive attack to contain the fire. the driver of the truck suffered burns. the severity of which is not yet

known. breaking news out of europe at this hour. two attackers storm a french church taking hostages and murdering a priest. now within the last few minutes france's pts francois hollande said the islamic state group is behind the attack. police killed the attackers armed with knives. the suspects apparently entered the church during morning mass in normandy. a second hostage was also seriously hurt. once again, french authorities say the attackers were killed and a priest was among the casualties. the identities of the suspects and their motive have not been released. hillary clinton will make an outstanding president, and i am proud to stand with her tonight. >> a desperate call for unity, plenty of cheers and jeers at the democratic convention last night as senator bernie sanders took the stage to endorse hillary clinton. a. >> a love look inside of wells fargo arena in philadelphia after tonight a rough start

wildfires here in california. this is the very latest video coming out of the fire on the left, burning in monterrey county and the sand fire on the right scorching areas north of los angeles. it's destroyed at least 20 homes, within,000 more homes are still in danger. some 16,000 acres have burned and thousands of firefighters are still on the front lines. as the fight to contain the flames continues. smoke is just lingering around surrounding areas. including here in the bay area. now some communities in the bay area starting to feel a lot of that impact. a live look outside over san jose. the smoke certainly can be seen and smelled. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san jose and it comes amid another "spare the air" day, kris. >> reporter: i don't know which picture of san jose you were looking at but we are in south san jose where you can definitely get a whiff of that wildfire smoke from time to time. folks in san francisco were also smelling it and sieeing it clinging to the skyline.

tike a look at this picture from space that monterrey county fire is putting off so much smoke it is visible from a nasa image. the plume there in the mid is a smoke drifting up from the fire. you didn't need a satellite to see the smoke yesterday. the haze was clinging to the san jose -- >> okay. it looks like we -- looks like we apparently lost the audio. showing you some shots across the bay area. that's from oakland, to san francisco where the air quality has been very, very bad all because of these fires that are burning south of us in monterrey county. we're going the check back in with her. take caution if you are exercising at all. get out there -- well, it is probably best to stay indoors. go to the gym if you have a membership or what not because the air quality is bad and of course check on your elderly and keep the young folks in as well. >> it's not just of course the soberanes fire but in southern california a huge fire there.

the sand fire north of los angeles continues to rage this morning. fire crews say the sand fires burn more than 35,000 acres and remains just 10% contained. shifting winds of sand, the flames destroying at least 18 homes and threatening more than 1500. at least 10,000 homes have been evacuated. and several roads remain closed leaving many people stranded. >> breathtaking. you can't breathe. you can't see and the soot gets in your eyes. so it's just horrible the fire is intense. depending on the wind factors and what have you, you know, it takes its toll on many lives. >> the fire started on last friday. investigators say that one death has been confirmed as a result of the sand fire. in the meantime, about 3,000 firefighters are battling the flames right now. a health warning for people in discovery bay. contra costa health officials are warning everybody to stay

out of the delta water after preliminary tests showed abnormal amounts of bloo you green algae. exposure to you or your pets can be dangerous. >> toxins can produce both gastrointestinal problems, skin problems, and also neurological problems. and that's some of the concerns why we don't want folks to go in the water right now. >> environmental officials say final tests from the water samples should be available in about a week. scientists have now wrapped up necropsy. they believe it was probably struck by a ship. humpback whales reason sighted along the san mateo coastline recently. they're feeding as their migration patterns bring them north. time to check microclimate forecast right now with kari. talking about a hot day. >> hot day and a lot of people will be heading to the beach if they can to find a place to cool off. we are starting out with some 50s and low 60s this morning.

will be still poor until they put out that fire near monterrey county which is supposed to take a while. this weekend it will be much cooler and breezy. at least in san francisco but not so much for the rest of the bay area. and we've been also keeping an eye on what's been happening in monterrey county with that wildfire there. you can see the smoke extending farther inland. and yesterday we did have a westerly wind. that's what in satellite imagery showed but we are going to see a shift in the wind direction today and that may carry that smoke in different areas. also be very light and really not a dominant wind direction to help us clear out the air. it is a "spare the air" alert day. very unhealthy in the east bay and south bay and moderate in the peninsula. here is loo ak at the microc microclima microclimates. gilroy, 99 degrees. pacifica, 65. mid 70s in san francisco while santa rosa is up to 95 and triple digit temperatures in the tri-valley. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up.

mike is talking about the east shore freeway. >> that's right. if folks were watching last week, paying attention, you know what's coming. we'll hold that for a second. the rest of the bay. smooth flow of traffic. we still have that debris reported by chp on 101 just south of 880 but not a problem. no slowing and no traffic break. you're getting a break over here approal plaza. no real backup plaza itself. east shore freeway through berkeley and richmond. the live shot, showing you westbound 80 with all the headlights. look, flashing l showed up on the eastbound side. i think that's the road crew clearing. we'll double-check on that. westbound getting on to the freeway itself. you'll have the metering lights that were all green last week. now cycling red and green. traffic getting on the east shore freeway is a factor. we'll see how that affects the morning commute. the fog will affect you as kari showed you. fog across the golden gate bridge. not unexpected but here and along the coast just use caution. back to you. >> somewhere there is a bridge.

a follow up on two deaths that launched the investigation into a criminal sex scandal at the oakland police department. when accusations broke that several oakland police officers were having on and off duty relations with a sex traffic teenager, mayor libby shaft promised a full investigation. the da's office is confirmed the

deaths last year of officer brendan o'brien and his wife were, in fact, suicides. it was o'brien's suicide note that launched the investigation into sexual misconduct in the oakland police department and at least two other agencies. the brand new santa clara courthouse is about to open but court clerks might be walking off the job. about 330 clerks are poised to go on strike after talks over wages and staffing ended without any resolution. the latest round of negotiations broke down late yesterday. clerks say they have not had a raise in eight years and no contract for the past two years. they claim the stalemate has led to hundreds of workers leaving which is now creating backups throughout the court system. >> we notice that people get frustrated when they do come to the court because there's long lines. there's not enough staff to help them. >> some clerks argue the county is more focused on the $200

million new courthouse than it is on hiring. it is 5:25. caught off guard. people in one pleasanton neighborhood are disappointed after waking up to construction fences surrounding their beloved park. [ chanting "save the park" ] >> neighbors rallied yesterday at the pleasant on the tennis and community park where it's being replaced by two tennis courts. the park already had has ten tennis courts but the city approved 12 in 1985. well, yesterday the city decided to start construction on the two remaining courts. neighbors say the city did little to inform them. >> the only notice we had was when the fences went up on thursday and everybody started talking about i, what's happening, what's going of here. >> so i totally understand that. so we are trying to make sure that we hear from both sides. >> pleasant on the's mayor continue say the construction of the court will stop but he agrees better notice should have been given. construction crews did back away yesterday and it's not clear when they will be back.

live look outside now, we started out with a nice h morning. and a few clouds here and there. some fog along the coastline. it's 60 degrees now in the tri-valley and the north bay. 53 degrees but it will be heating up quickly as we grough. a lot of sunshine and also some smoke drifting across the bay area. up to 102 degrees in the tri-valley. and 76 degrees in san francisco and along the coastline. we will talk about how hot it gets and the air quality coming up. mike has couple of updates now for the east bay commute. >> look at the entire bay and you will see no major surprises or patterns. we do have a crash in the altamont. i'll check on that. right now focusing in this section of the east bay. looking at the bay bridge and and the east shore freeway. bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. last three minutes, filled up. all the lanes are back to the end of the parking lot. berkeley as well, this is a main feeder route to the area.

metering lights are turned on when you get on the east shore freeway this morning. that will be a change for folks. eastbound we had those flashes lights cheer. no problem. back to you. mike, thank you very much. all new this morning, overnight truck fire sends fire crews rushing to douse the flames and lands one man in the hospital. >> "today in the bay's" chuck is live in cupertino where it all happened. chuck, we're told some good samaritan s jumped in to help? >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura and sam. we are still trying to find the name and the age of the man who was in that truck seen by witnesses behind the wheel of it as the truck was on fire, rolling in the hills above cupertino. sources tell us that the victim was brought to valley medical center's burn unit. nor do we know the extent of his injuries. the fire happened in very steep terrain near stevens creek reservoir. so steep that firefighters had to lean their ladders against the hillside to reach the flames. three young men say they saw the truck on fire on stevens canyon road near montebello.

they pulled the driver out of the truck to safety as the hillside caught fire under extremely dry conditions. >> it's so dry and so hot today, lucky that there's no wind right now. the terrain certainly made it a challenge because the fire engulfed very quickly. pretty close to the station. so we had engines on scene right away. >> reporter: as we mentioned, they were assisted by those three young men as well. the driver of the truck was taken by ambulance to the hospital. the fire was limited to about 40 square feet. very small area. no homes were threatened. now arson investigators are checking to see if that truck fire was somehow deliberately set. reporting live in san jose, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." it's 5:32. now to a developing story, the flames that are scorching metropolitan ray county right now. more than 16,000 acres have burned. fire crews are racing to save homes. >> the impact of this fire is

even reaching here in the bay area. a live look right now at san jose this morning as haze is lingering on the horizon. kris sanchez is joining us live with more on concerns over air quality and this is going to be a very bad day for that, kris. >> reporter: right, sam. we showed folks picture from downtown san jose. the haze there. we're a little bit farther south. you can smell the smoke as it goes through the a air. it was also visibility in san francisco. if you look at this picture that we found taken by nasa, you can see that the fire in monterrey county is putting up so much moek smoke it's visible from space. this image from nasa shows the plume there in the middle, that is smoke drifting up from that soberanes fire. yesterday, the haze clung to the san jose skyline and to the north it was polluting the views of the bridges and other san francisco landmarks. california fire experts predict that 16,000 acre fire will continue to grow in monterrey

county given the conditions so the impact on air quality will also continue. so today is a "spare the air" day. it is the second one in a row. it is the tenth one of the year. the wildfire smoke is combining with vehicle exhausts and that's part of the problem. and that alone with the heat and the light winds mean the smog is not moving out of the area. the bay area air quality management district is asking people to limit outdoor activity during not hours during the day. carpool or use mass transit instead of driving solo. the weather is going to be a big factor in the firefight and thus in the air quality picture. and kari hall is going to be talking about that in just a bit. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you very much. we return to politics. democratic national convention resumes tonight where delegates will pick their presidential nominee and it will follow a bumpy ride to this point. beginning with last night as

bernie sanders supporters cre e created a raucous atmosphere. they booed and chanted after they heard hillary's name mentioned. this comes after wikileaks shows clear favoritism to hillary clinton. the dnc supposed to be impartial in this process. bernie sanders was last night's key note speaker. he urged the supporters once again to unite behind hillary clinton. >> by these measures, any objectionable jury will conclude that based on her ideas and her leadership, hillary clinton must become the next president of the united states. up. >> while last night's speaker included new jersey's cory booker and elizabeth warren it was first lady michelle obama whose speech many say stole the show. >> and because of hillary clinton, my daughter and all our sons and daughters now take for

fund-raiser. while on the campaign trail, trump is focused on the recent leaks of the democratic national committee e-mails that appear to show dnc favored clinton over sanders. it shows it was rigged, he says. new detail on a knife attack in japan that killed at least 19 people and injured dozens more in a home for the disabled. this happened in the city of sagamihar ark just west of tokyo. a 26-year-old man who was a former employee at the facility carried out this vicious attack. police say many victims were asleep when they were stabbed. the suspect later turned himself in to police. the motive remains very unclear here. we're told there are no immediate links to terrorism. the search continues for the man who shot in an oakland police sergeant over the weekend. the officer was trapped inside her patrol car after a crash when she says someone walked up and fired and missed. the gunman was not connected to

that crash. oakland police say they're now looking at other ways to keep officers safe. >> i think this is a very cowardly attack by someone who took advantage of a situation where an officer was essentially trapped in her vehicle to take a -- literally take a potshot at a police officer. >> i just got shot at. i was in the car at -- oh, i can't get out of the car. >> after the recent ambush necessary dallas and baton rouge, opd is requiring officers to ride with a partner. in this case the sergeant who was targeted was alone because she's a supervisor. opd is considering supervisors have partners as well. a former san mateo police officer has been officially charged in connection with rape, assault, and kidnapping. noah winchester was in court yesterday. authorities say that in addition to raping a woman winchester also sexually assault at least four other women including a 17-year-old girl. that alleged assault happened

when he was a police officer for the los rios district in the sacramento area. he worked for san mateo pd for ten months last year. he's expected to enter a plea next week. improved fire protections for san francisco renters will be the focus of a hearing today at city hall. some supervisors are calling for updates to the city's fire code. that includes requiring building owners to provide tenants with a written notice of smoke alarm requirements yearly. also land lords would have to provide the county annual statements confirming fire alarm testing has been done. a string of fires over the past two years have destroyed buildings in the mission district including strict -- six structures in just one fire last month. fiery conditions for most people in the bay area today. san francisco might be the lone exception to the rule here, kari hall. >> and it will be, especially along the coastline where we start out this morning with fog. but today we have an offshore wind. and that also allows the coastal areas to heat up a few her degrees. ends with are light and
