4:00 am
it's wednesday, july 27th. coming up on "early today," another first for american politics. >> i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> and just like that, another glass ceiling is shattered. the big guns were out on the second night of the democratic national convention including bill clinton's personal message about his wife and one donald trump. >> one is real. the other is made up. >> plus, we asked president obama if he thinks the russians are trying to elect donald trump. also, new details on the chilling murder of a catholic priest.
4:01 am
"early today" starts right now. well, good morning, glass ceiling broken. a woman is a major nominee for president of the united states. hillary clinton is the first female in american history to reach this massive milestone. she thanked convention goers for the nomination. >> what an incredible honor that you have given me and i can't believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet. and if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, i may become the first woman president, but one of you is next. >> it was senator bernie sanders who ended the roll call vote with his formal request.
4:02 am
>> i move that hillary clinton be selected as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the united states. >> however, despite sanders active unity his most ardent supporters stormed out of the hall protesting clinton's nomination, but the show went on with bill clinton taking the stage to give a year by year description of his wife. >> she's the best darn change maker i have met in my entire life. this woman has never been satisfied with the status quo in anything. she always wants to move the ball forward. that is just who she is. how does this square with the things that you heard at the republican convention? what's the difference in what i told you and what they said? how do you square it? you can't. one is real, the other is made
4:03 am
up. >> the former president also reached out to demographic slices of the community, seemingly alienated by republicans. >> if you love this country, you're working hard, you're obeying the law and you'd like to become a citizen, you should choose immigration reform over somebody that wants to send you back. if you're -- if you're a muslim, if you're a muslim and you love america and freedom and you hate terror, stay here and help us win and make a future together. we want you. >> then you had howard dean reenacting one of the most memorable moments from his own presidential run in 2004. >> because this race is going to be won on the ground and it's going to be won in colorado and iowa and north carolina and

4:06 am
and the american people, you know, have their say, we don't know. >> are you worried? >> you know, as somebody who has now been in elected office at various levels for about 20 years, i've seen all kinds of crazy stuff happen and i think anybody who goes into campaigns not running scared can end up losing. well, the president was also asked about whether he believes the russians were behind the dnc internal e-mails made public. both the dnc and clinton aids say russian agents are behind the hacking that led to those documents and while that has not been verified there is fresh scrutiny into the motives of the russian president vladimir putin, namely his relationship with hillary clinton. here's what president obama had to say again here. >> do you believe the russians are number one, behind that hack and the release and that they're trying to interfere with the u.s. political election?
4:07 am
>> i think the fbi is still investigating what happened. i know that experts have attributed this to the russians. what we do know is that the russians hack our systems. not just government systems, but private systems, but you know, what the motives were in terms of the leaks, all that, i can't say directly. what i do know is that donald trump has repeatedly expressed admiration for putin. >> sounds like you might be suggesting putin might be motivated to prefer trump in the white house. >> i am basing this on what mr. trump has said and i think that trump's gotten pretty favorable coverage back in russia. >> is it possible that the russians will try to influence the u.s. elections? >> anything's possible.
4:08 am
>> and you can see much more with the president coming up on "today." he addresses the dnc tonight. he'll be joined by joe biden and tim kaine making his address to the counted. the coverage begins tonight at 10:00 eastern, 7:00 pacific right here on nbc. isis has crossed into new territory after two of its so-called soldiers burst into a french church in normandy yesterday. they slit the throat of an el r elderly priest who was celebrating mass. they used hostages as human shields before being shot and killed by police. the attackers survived some kind of sermon by the altar before carrying out their heinous acts. it appears to be the first time the group attacked a church in the west. after speaking to pope francis, french president said to attack a church, to kill a priest is to
