good morning. thank you for joining us on this thursday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. a busy morning already for computers. let's get to mike inouye with breaking news and major stretch of roadway. >> that's right. the nimitz freeway past the oakland coliseum. with human factor involved there, someone was killed as a result of this crash. but i'm going to talk about the technical details affecting your traffic flow. it is 880 through oakland which the only impact for folks' commute this morning. around hagegenberger where folk hit the brakes because traffic is backed up as their forced off the freeway at 66. there's a front of your road, a roadway called coliseum way between oracle and the freeway. folks are able to get off the freeway and on at the very same 66th avenue on-ramp. we suggest you get off earlier at 98th and take san leandro street past the scene. right below our camera, activity here for the crash. there's our nbc van. there's coliseum way.

pete suratos in the same area. pete, you're on the scene. what's the very latest? >> just expand where mike is talking about. what's happening here, you have the cars being directed off the coliseum way in the area heading 880 northbound as they deal with this fatal crash. they're telling us a pedestrian was hit around 3:41 a.m. the driver made the call and of course that pedestrian was pronounced dead. that driver is not dead. we're being told by chp that they're going to open up this roadway, these lanes again in the next five minutes. and they're going to give us an update shortly in roughly about ten minutes to tell us exactly how this pedestrian ended up on the freeway. for right now they're telling us in five minutes these lanes should open up and traffic should resume as normal here on 880 northbound. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> we'll check back with you shortly. in the meantime, following more breaking news. small grass fire still burning in the south bay.

here's video in fro overnight where fire crews are on the scene. it's behind the los lagos golf course in south san jose by the capital expressway and mclaughlin avenue. fire is 100 by 100 feet and moving slowly. at this point no homes are threatened. police are in the area directing traffic. we've got a crew on the scene keeping an eye on that situation. we're doing to bring you updates throughout the morning. to the south a larger fire, massive one continuing to burn in monterrey county leaving behind a path of destruction in its wake. a number of charred homes now stand at 34. >> "today in the bay's" damian trujillo live in sethis morning >> good morning. we're at base camp here in toro park. these crews, it's been a tiring few days for them and they still have a lot of work to do. in fact, they've even gotten re-enforcement over the last few days and they might need more.

last report from cal fire has containment at 10% in the soberanes fire. that's partly because the fire is in rough terrain. a difficult area to get to. sometimes crews have to hike for three miles just to be able to get to the incident. cal fire says it worries fatigue might be a factor with some firefighters, especially with the heat. so they're keeping a close eye on the crew. total response was about 3,000 firefighters but 500 more arrived recently. many of them from the bay area and so far, 34 homes have been destroyed along with 10 out buildings like barns. those who did make it out say now they have to start from the ground up again. >> yeah, that was my home. that was my home. so i lost everything i own. >> these are like 300 foot flames. just absolutely -- i'm shaken. i'm still post-traumatic. say good-bye to my motorcycle and everything.

that was it. >> reporter: the crews who are here at base camp this morning will be briefed on the task ahead today. then they will head out to relieve the crews who have been up on the ridges overnight battling those fires. exactly a cold morning here in the salinas area. you get that monterrey peninsula so maybe that will be good news for the fire crews. >> thank you very much, damian. in southern california a large section of the angeles national forest is off limits. the closure was handed down late yesterday from the sand fire burning 30 miles north of los angeles. there is good news here however. firefighters are said to be making progress. the fire is now 40% contained. more than 38,000 acres have burned. sadly, one man died when the fire reportedly caught up to him as he was trying to evacuate. ♪

trump committed treason. even house speaker paul ryan warned trump that russia is, quote, a global menace led by a devious thug, end quote. did you see this from the bay area and beyond? as far away as utah and idaho people frantically grabbing their foebs to capture the moment. bright lights streaking across the sky at 9:30 last night and this morning we're learning a little more about what it might have been. for starters it's not a natural meteor shower. experts say it was debris or so-called space junk. we're not yet sure about the source of the space junk but it may have been from a chinese rocket that was launched last month. >> so it's not a meteor shower. we're not seeing showers of any kind. >> we need a little relief. >> it would be great. it's been very difficult conditions. kari hall has your microclimate forecast. >> the coast has been nice and cool and the place to go to cool off. another day of some high heat in

san jose as the high will top out at 95 degrees. as we start out though at 62, we will have some poor air quality again today. as the temperatures heat up this weekend, it will only be a few degrees lower and cooler at the coast. the next week we're still talking about some 90s inland. while san francisco will be in the 60s. so once again, there will be some relief in some parts of the bay area. i'll detail that coming up in less than ten minutes. heading back over to mike, still watching the nimitz freeway. >>s a it reopens right now in front of us looking at these pictures that just got pick up. there's the crew. look at that. still a few more flares to be picked up but they are reopening all lanes of northbound 880 as we speak. folks, we're getting off at 66 because of a deadly crash. as we look at your map this affected the entire area from 98th north up toward the coliseum. recovery and slower speeds as more cars hit the road. pedestrian was hit and killed. pete surratts to is out there following details as chp will

a dramatic and deadly screenplaying out on the streets of los angeles as that car you see there is lodged in someone's home after a driver slammed into it last night and then ran from the scene. firefighters are now saying that entire episode happened during a prayer group meeting inside of the house. one person inside was killed. at least 11 others were injured. witnesses ran in to try to help out the victims. many of whom are elderly. and some of whom were pinned underneath the car. there's no word yet on what caused the driver to hit the house but authorities say the woman who was behind the wheel is still on the run this morning. at 5:13, an investigative unit exclusive. went when a child misbehaves in class should the student get

we've got a power alert as well. hot temperatures. >> hot temperatures. they're just saying limit the time that you're running the air conditioner between 5:00 in the afternoon. that's another thing to consider. maybe a good time to head out of the house and find somewhere cool to go while it is sizzling for inland areas. as we get a live look outside now over san jose, we start out with some breaks in the clouds. and also some temperatures have feel nice as you head out. once again we talked about that "spare the air" alert. and it will be most unhealthy in the east bay and south bay. once again, because of that wildfire smoke drifting in from the south. the peninsula and the north bay will be fairly good today. and we will have a light southerly wind coming in. and it's still traps a lot of that ozone and that smoke in the valleys today with the winds only coming in at about five to ten miles an hour. maybe a little bit more breezy for parts of the east bay and also for the hills. but expect the same thing again tomorrow as well as the weekend.

so right now as you head out the door it's 52 degrees in napa. 56 degrees in oakland. and 57 degrees in palo alto. and we will see the temperatures rising from the mid 60s in san jose at 8:00 in the morning to lunchtime temperatures at 87. as you get ready to head home it will be hot, up to 94 degrees. a look at all the microclimates in the highs to expect today. up to 89 degrees in redwood city. the castro will be at 77 degrees. and santa rosa, 95. oakland, 83. and dublin, up to 98 degrees today. still this hot, high pressure. very slow to move across the region. and into the weekend it will slowly start to move off to the east. allowing for some low pressure to move in to the pacific northwest but we will still be above average with 60s along the coast and some 90s inland. this is the way it shapes up for san francisco. over the next seven days, highs in the upper 70s. and it will be 70 degrees on saturday. still very nice there and

comfortable with some 60s next week. but we go from the triple digits today into the agent 80s and 90s for the next several days and this weekend still looks pretty hot. heading over to mike now. still with an update in oakland and alert for san jose. >> wee will take in a quick one for oakland. nimitz freeway reopened. cliff's notes version, hold on for a second. south bay, we had an earlier car fire. that cleared incident. on the shoulder. shell of a car. no one reported on the scene or involved there. here, earlier vegetation fire. this ended up affecting two of your lanes on westbound capitol expressway. westbound east capitol exfres way will restrict flow. a lot of residential area and that would affect you if you're taking 101 coming over toward 87. most folks don't do that but we wanted to report that to you as well. the rest of the south bay moving

i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. mike inouye has break news on 880 but good news now. >> the second morning in a row we had major problems in the nimitz freeway in the east bay. let's show you the map. all commuters a second. we will zoom in toward the area by the oakland coliseum. the good news is just about 20 minutes ago just shy of 20 minutes they reopened all lanes traveling north past 66 where there was a deadly crash this morning. just about 90 minutes of investigation by chp and the backup that we saw back to about 98 quickly cleared up because traffic flows light. we're going to show you the live shot and what i just saw minutes ago the last of the flares burned themselves out as you're traveling north. no more evidence of that except our crews out there and chp as well. our own pete surratts to is out there with more details. >> reporter: mike, as you mentioned, this traffic is back to normal on 880 northbound. get to some of that video as we

give you details from chp. they tell thus was a deadly pedestrian crash. they don't know if this pedestrian was a transient but this person, a male pedestrian, was walking in the direction of the traffic heading 880 northbound and driver struck the pedestrian. the driver made the call to 911 and that's when they showed up and pedestrian was pronounced dead. we do know the driver was heading from the airport and chp transported that driver to their family. they're shaken up. it's not every day you see a pedestrian walking down the street. that's all the details they have at this time. as i mentioned, traffic is back to normal here on 880 north in oakland. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you very much. following more breaking news, small grass fire fully contained in the south bay. this is video from over night. fire crews on the scene for hours looking at hot spots behind the los glagos in san

jose. no homes were threatened by the flames. two westbound lanes of east capitol expressway are expected to remain closed for about two hours. now to our south. a huge fire continuing to rage in monterrey county leaving behind a path of destruction. the number of charred homes at this point now stands at 34. >> "today in the bay's" damian trujillo live in salinas this morning. this fire is raging out of control, damian. >> it is. good morning. crews are just waking up this morning and ready for this shift here at base camp for today. it's going to be another long and hot and tiresome day up for them in fighting the soberanes fire down south of carmel in monterrey county. at this point we do have the one fatality of the dozer operator from the other day. the last report from cal fire has the containment still at 10%. the fire remains in tough terrain, difficult area to access. sometimes crews have to hike for three miles just to be able to get to the incident.

shootout. three other officers were injured. tomorrow attorney general lynch will participate in a community ran table and hold a meeting with first responders. concord police are investigating a suspicious death after a man's body was found on the side of a bid difficult road. the gruesome discovery was made noon yesterday. police say there were no signs of trauma on the victim. the body was found on the side of willow path road and linwood drive a few blocks from elementary school. someone passing by saw the body and called police. police say the victim is in his late 20s, a man. no word yet on the cause of his death. follow-up to breaking news we brought you yesterday. on and off-ramps of davis street on 880 have now reopened. it took pretty much all day and all night after a tanker truck crashed and caught fire right before the heart of yesterday's morning commute. that truck was carrying refined used motor oil. the driver died instantaneously. still no word on why the driver

lost control. it's 5:39. the criminal case against pg and e is now in the hands of a jury. after six weeks of testimony attorneys wrapped up closing arguments yesterday. prosecutors accused pg&e of maximizing profits over safety which contributed to the deadly san bruno explosion in 2010. defense attorneys insists utility did not commit a criminal act. pg&e faces 12 counts of breaking federal laws. if convicted on all counts, fines could top half billion dollars. as the fires continue to our south, so, too, does our heat which has been here in full force all week, kari hall has a look at your microclimate forecast. >> it still will be hot today. we're still tracking some low clouds and fog right now in the peninsula as well as san francisco. temperatures in the 50s and even some low 60s at this point. as we head through the day we will be up to 77 degrees in the city with north bay up to 95 degrees. the same in the south bay while the tri-valley still hitting over 100 degrees today and the peninsula, a high of 90 degrees.

he made those comments as he visits poland. the pope reacting to the killing of an elderly priest in france this week by two isis followers. he said we must not be afraid to say the truth. the world sat war because it has lost peace. the pope also stressed the war is not a war of religion. there have been several recent attacks in germany. that country is cracking down on extremists. police have raided several buildings. those raids come after a series of terror related attacks over the past ten days. a mosque, the german officials believe is a hot spot for terrorists was also raided. germany's interior ministry says the targets were eight leaders of a militant group. there are reports the group is part of a network of ult ultraconservative islamists. the mosque was saefred as investigators focus on banning the group. the next hearing in the fight over music icon prince's estate takes place later this morning. prince who died in april from an

overdose did not leave a will. his sister and at least five half siblings believe they should be the heir to the icon's estate which is estimated to be worth $300 million. a hearing last month discussed the best way to go about giving dna tests. that could determine possible heirs. this next story may change how you feel about some of the more popular supplements out there. according to consumer reports, a team of doctors analyzed ingredients in common supplements and found some do more harm than good. risks they found include organ damage, cancer, and cardiac arrest. here are some of the ingredients specifically that you should be avoiding. caffeine powder, green tea extract powder, red yeast rice, and germonder. pre-existing medical conditions a abuse must be factored into the supplement risks. growing concerns in a bay area college campus. normally quiet summer session at the university of san francisco is interrupted with campus crime. campus police e-mailed a

bulletin to students warning about what they're calling a random attack at the university center monday morning. police say a man acted as a lookout while a woman attacked two students as they studied. punching them in the face and taking their belongings. >> this is normally a very safe atmosphere for the students, whether they're studying or socializing. so again, a very random act. >> campus police say the thieves also stole a laptop from another building before the assault. san francisco police are now reviewing video evidence hoping to identify the man and woman. the head of the fbi this morning pushing for access to criminal secrets on their phones. >> scott mcgrew, the nfbi says hundreds of cases are locked up because of encryption. >> 500 phones last year the fbi couldn't open because the person on trial wouldn't or in the case of the san bernardino shooter couldn't give them the password. comey just completed discussions on cyber security. you will recall he was also the face of the fbi as apple and the

fbi met with congress to fight over the future of locked phones. comey told the "wall street journal," quote, the fbi should not tell people what the answer is. neither should companies. we have to have a conversation in this country about where we want to be. other news, just moments ago we got word oracle is buying san mateo based net suite for $9 billion. it makes software for businesses that can access anywhere what we call software as a service. it's an interesting payoff for oracle founder larry ellison who invested it early. nothing wrong with the deal but it's a win with him on both sides of that deal. stocks were largely flat on wednesday. the fed did as we said it would and did not raise interest rates. facebook blew away investors with this report. we'll talk more about that later. dow fell for the third straight day. donald trump, you've heard of him, was on san francisco based reddit last night doing what they call an ask me anything where users ask anything and the person answers.

to catch the bus or a train or some type of public transportation or carpooling. and our winds coming in from the south at about five to ten miles an hour. once again, drifting the smoke into the bay area. pretty much the same thing tomorrow but a slight shift in the wind direction will make eight little bit farther off towards the east bay and then as we head into the rest of the weekend, still a very light wind. so it will still be very warm. we're up to 102 degrees for the high today in morgan hill. and palo alto, 90 degrees. in at&t park. 92 in san rafael while hayward is at 97 and 10 2 degrees today in livermore. so it's a great pool day for the inland areas. it will be anywhere from 95 degrees once again to 106 and be sure to wear the sunscreen while you're out there. later on this evening the giants take on the nationals at 7:15 it will be 70 dries dropping back to 67 with a few clouds and high

hit a fuel truck and burst into flames. four people were onboard and they all died. no word yet on the victims' identities and airport officials say they don't yet know where that plane was flying from. also a dramatic and deadly screenplaying out on the streets of los angeles and ending there inside a house when a driver slammed through the front of that home last night and then proceeded to run for the scene. firefighters are now saying the entire thing happened during a prayer group meeting inside of the home. one person inside was killed. at least 11 others were injured. witnesses ran in to try to help the victims. many of whom were elderly and were pinned underneath the car. some of them. no word yet on what caused the driver to hit the house but authorities say the woman who was behind the wheel is still on the run this morning. at 5:58. investigative unit exclusive. when a child misbehaves in class should the student get sent tote principal's auchesz or police? our unit discovered the answer can vary school to school and
