"today in the bay" continues right now. to infinity and beyond and to kari hall. i was starting with kari because it is heating up. once again. >> yes, it will be another hot day. poor air quality, high ozone, all of that we've been dealing with with pretty much all this week. so it will be pretty warm again. we're expecting the highs to top out near 100 degrees in the

valleys. right now as you head out the door in the north bay, nice and cool. 50 degrees there. while 65 degrees in the tri-valley. the peninsula at 57 degrees. and 90 in the peninsula in the tri-valley expect the high again over 100 degrees and 77. nice and warm in san francisco. i'll detail the high heat that continues into the weekend. that's coming up. mike has more details on what's going on in pleasant on the. >> we check that out. look at the map first of all and show folks this is a pleasant drive right now. earlier crash in san jose has cleared to the shoulder and most for 101 at 880. over here this is also on the shoulder but there may be a gas leak after a single car spun out and crashed a couple other vehicle s looked like they pulld over to help. this distraction going on. i want you the notice foothill road. that's the road that most at locals know they're not going to like that i point it out but it does travel alongside 680. a lot of folks like to use that. might be an option for you this morning. if you're not familiar though,

stay on of because that is moving fast scene. so is 880, slowing down toward union city and san mateo bridge. let's show you oakland because the traffic sensors are not showing problem and live camera shows no more problem after all lanes open. northbound 880. there was however a tragic crash here early morning for that, pete suratos is on scene. pete, i will hand it off to you for that early morning incident. >> reporter: yes, that deadly pedestrian crash momentarily shut down these 880 northbound lanes near coliseum way. it's back to normal. we're being told by chp this pedestrian around 4:00 a.m. was walking in the fast lane over there with the flow of traffic. now they're saying they don't know the identity of this person but they do know that the driver is the one that called 911. was driving the speed limit and hit this pedestrian. now, i talked to chp. said the pedestrian was p pronounced dead when they showed up. i asked if this male pedestrian was a transient who made it on

the freeway. >> due to the clothing and the identification on the person, it did not appear on the a transient at the time. >> reporter: now the driver was heading home from the airport and at this time chp says it does not appear that the driver was under influence. back to you guys in the newsroom. oh, my gosh. that's so cool. >> i've never seen anything like that before. it's still going. >> yeah, everybody talking a it this morning. did you see it from the bay area and beyond? as far away as utah and idaho. people frantically grabbing their cameras, just to capture the moment. bright lights streaking across the sky about 9:30 last night and this morning we're learning a little more about what it might have been. for starters, it's not a natural meteor shower. it was in fact debris or space junk. we're not yet sure about the source of the space junk but it may have been from a chinese rocket launched last month. 2016, politicians lighting

van ness. update now to breaking news in the south bay. a small brush fire that popped up overnight is now out in san jose. there's some video though crews putting out the flames only a few hours ago. it happened near capitol expressway in mclaughlin avenue right behind the los lagos golf course. it was 100 by 100 feet and we're told that crews are going to remain on scene for a little while longer just to make sure that the hot spots stay out. no homes were threatened. >> also keeping a very close eye on a developing story on a deadly wildfire that continues to tear through parts of monterrey county. evacuations have been expanded from the soberanes fire which started six days ago north of big sur. here's what we know. the number of homes burned has expanded to 34. firefighters say more than 2,000 homes are still threatened. and 3,500 firefighters are banding together to try to contain this fire on the scene. yesterday we learned that a forest worker died when his or

her bulldozer overturned while trying to clear open space. soberanes fire is still only 10% contained. damian trujillo is there live coming up in the next hour. in southern california a large section of the angeles national forest is now off limits. the closure was ordered down late yesterday from the sand fire burning about 30 miles north of l.a. there is good news here. firefighters are making some progress. the fire is now 40% contained. more than 38,000 acres have burned. sadly, one man died when the fire reportedly caught up to him as he tried to evacuate. concord police are investigating a death after a man's body was found on the side of a busy road. the discovery was made around noon yesterday. police say there were no signs of trauma on the victim. he was found on the side of willow pass road a few blocks from monte garden elementary school.

police say the victim is a man in his late 20s. no word yet on the cause of his death. laura, there are growing concerns this morning on a bay area college campus normally a quiet summer session at the university of san francisco is interrupted with campus crime. campus police e-mailed the bulletin out to students warning about what they're calling a random attack at the university center monday morning. police say a man acted as a lookout while a woman attacked two students as they were studying. punching them in the face and taking their belongings. >> this is normally a very safe atmosphere for the students, whether they're studying or socializing. so again, a very random act. >> campus police say the thieves also stole a laptop from another building before those assaults. san francisco police officers are reviewing video evidence hoping to identify the man and the woman. it is 6:08. if you're a soccer fan here in the bay area tonight is your night. >> the best of the best are going to be on display in the mls. they're showing off their skills

welcome back. thieves are striking construction sites in the bay area and now a regional auto theft task force is searching for at least one person who is stole huge piece of machinery. that task force tracked down some of the stolen equipment including four bobcats at a lot in fremont and a property in morgan hill. officials also found large stolen trailers and confiscated several firearms on the fremont

property. business owners say they are stunned. >> very strange nowadays to steal this kind of equipment. i'm glad they didn't hit me. i have a lot of expensive equipment in my shop. >> the sheriff's office released this picture of the man they say is the main suspect they're looking for. he's identified as 38-year-old vincent hodge. it's a prior mug shot. at this point investigators are not releasing what construction sites were targeted. well, it's looking like the most important fastest growing company in silicon company isn't apple or google. >> no, it's facebook. scott mcgrew, they had a huge day yesterday. >> yes, sure, apple is worth more, sam. google has more employees. but it is facebook everything is talking about. the company absolutely knocking it out of the park with earnings. they hit a triple. earnings tripled from a year ago this time. 1 3/4 billion people using facebook. the company made 2 billion in profit in the last quarter. not revenue, profit. that works it to $33 million a day in profits for facebook.

other news, we got word oracle is baying san mateo based net suite for $9 billion. they make software for businesses they can access anywhere. we call that software as a service. it's an interesting payoff for oracle founder larry ellison who invested in it very early. let me point out this is a win for him on both sides of that deal. stocks were largely flat wednesday. the fed did as we said it would, did not raise interest rates. facebook is the stock to watch. the dow fell for the third straight day yesterday. silicon valley and the computer industry in particular dismayed by donald trump's request that the russians hack hillary clinton. we played that sound bite for you earlier where he says russia, if you're listening, "the new york times" points out it is the first time in american history a candidate for president has asked a foreign government to interfere with his own political rival. that has led people to ask on

6:17. this for the u.s. women's water polo team heads to rio and one final tune-up before a electrified crowd at stanford last night. they hosted russia last night in front of a sellout crowd. team usa took it 16-7. four years ago the americans won gold and they're favored again. the team is led by danville's own maggie stephan considered to be one if not the best player in the world. fans say since many of them can't go to rio they're very thankful they could still catch some of the action in person. >> great. great to have the rio spirit here in palo alto and that it that we're able to experience some of that here. a lot of us can't travel down. this one and another little one down there, it will probably be cold, so we can't get away at this time. but they come out. >> palo alto a little easier road trip than all of the way to rio. team usa's first game in rio is coming up on august 9th against

spain. of course, don't forget you don't have to travel all of the way there. we sent jessica aguirre to do the heavy lifting for us. checking in live with her from brazil with reports starting next week. you have to imagine the pool is going to be a very popular place to go this week. >> most certainly. it has been, if you don't have one, somewhere cool is a great idea. these hot temperatures continue. >> yeah. and it's been really rough this week. it looks like this weather continues though as the stagnant weather pattern just kind of hangs around for the next several days. as we get a live look outside now, in san jose, we will start out with mostly clear sky. and the smoke once again an issue as you've seen the haze. and right now it's 61 degrees, heading up to 95. so, yes, another day with some poor air quality and hot temperatures well above average. it will be only a few degrees lower this weekend and much cooler near the coast. so if you're making plans make sure you head somewhere cooler. maybe to the beach. and next week we will still have

some 90s inland while it will be in the 60s in san francisco. so looking at the "spare the air" alert, once again today, what this means is that you should probably catch public transportation if you can or carpool as it will reduce some of the ozone levels, especially in the south bay and the east bay. and we also have the smoke mixing in from that wildfire that is in monterrey county and the winds moving from south to knot will bring that right into the south bay and the east bay. and our winds won't be that strong so it will be trapped as the air is sinking due to high pressure. tomorrow we will have more of an onshore flow and maybe slightly better air quality. hopefully it continues to improve as we go into the weekend. it will be up to 98 degrees today in los gatos. 89 in redwood city and castro looking at a high of 77 degrees. 95 in santa rosa. oak oakland, 83. 102 today in livermore.

later on this evening nice weather for the giants game at at&t park at 7:15. at first pitch right at 70 degrees and dropping back to 67. a few clouds moving in later on this evening. once again, high pressure has kept it hot and also just pretty much the same weather pattern throughout the entire week. but this will slowly move off to the east allowing for an ore of low pressure to move into the pacific northwest. it will still be above normal with 60s along the coast and 90s inland. and we will see the 60s by sunday in san francisco. meantime for the next three days, we're still in the low 70s. 100 degrees in the inland areas today. and in the 90s into the weekend. it just comes down slightly and we'll continue to see that trend into the start of next week. now as we head over to mike, another update on what's happening as some of those slow spots on the roadways. >> we're seeing more of those because the traffic build is typical schedule. we'll look to the south bay and also to hayward and the tri-valley. we talked about the slower

trends. we're going to zoom in towards san jose. you guys mentioned, laura and sam, the fire over at los lagos, the vegetation fire. two lanes westbound east capitol expressway is blocked by the crews. that will restrict the traffic flow. heading away from 101 and santa rosa or highway 87, that's not typically the direction of the traffic flow out of residential area but that will restrict east capitol expressway or westbound direction. that's confusinconfusing. going that way on capitol expressway. the rest of the south bay and rest of the bay moves well. bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are on. let me show you the san mateo first moving well across that flat section. and we'll show you that bay bridge toll plaza where we talked about and as you would expect, all lanes backed up. the left approach still just about mid parking lot and no problems for the east shore freeway. back to you. >> thanks, mike. all right, at 6:22, a lot of people hoping for the lucky number. powerball jackpot keeps on

officers killed 11 days ago in a shootout. three other officers were injured. tomorrow attorney general lynch will participate in a community round-table and hold a meeting with first responders. it is nearly 20 years later and authorities say they still don't know who killed a man near live more. but the alameda county sheriff's department released a new image yesterday hope that that would jeb rate new leads in a decade's old case. on may 27, 1997, decomposed torso was found along unincorporated livermore. 19 years later authorities say with the help of new technology, dna collected from that torso allowed them to determine the victim's hair and eye color, gender, and ethnicity. detectives believe the victim is a man in his 20s of western european decent. >> using computers and science they're able to turn that dna into a picture and basically put you back together and give us an image of the person that you

are. >> investigators are hope that that picture will jog someone's memory. if you know anything surrounding this case, please contact the alameda county sheriff's department. now to the latest developments out of monterrey county. a story we have been covering closely all week. 14 more homes were destroyed in a fire that is still raging out of control, not far from salinas. that brings the total number of homes burned up to 34. at least one person has died. "today in the bay's" damian trujillo is live from salinas. this firefight is far from over. 3,000 plus firefighters battling the flames. >> reporter: that's right, sam. good morning. briefing begins at 7:00 this morning for the firefighters here. they will get their assignments and then head out to the front lines. many of them spent the night in their fire trucks, resting up for their long and hot shift today for the next 24 hours here in the soberanes fire in monterrey county. the last report from cal fire has the containment still at

10%. that's partly because the fire is in tough terrain and a difficult area to get to. sometimes crews have to hike for three miles just to be able to get to the incident. cal fire worries fatigue might be a factor with some firefighters, especially with the heat. they are keeping a close eye on the crews. more than 2500 firefighters -- or 3500 firefighters are still on the front lines. many of them are from the bay area. so far as you mentioned, 34 homes have been destroyed along with 10 out buildings like barns. those who lost everything say it won be easy starting over. >> that was my home. that was my home. so i lost everything i own. >> 300 foot flames. just absolutely shaken. i'm still post-traumatic. say good-bye to my motorcycle and everything. >> reporter: the crews who are here at base camp started waking up about 5:30 this morning.

as we head into the weekend, that's coming up in less than ten minutes. mike's got a mostly normal commute right now. >> that's right. looks like mostly sunny a coup of spots that we're watching. over here looking at a smooth flow of traffic and the south bay has normal trend, lighter than usual though for this thursday and that crash north 101 at 880. still on the shoulder. we'll talk about that more in the next report. want to make sure we get the try valuely, north 680 shows that unusual slowing because four vehicles on the shoulder and some crews that are coming to help out with four different vehicles with flat tires. still trying to get more information on what that cause may be but we heard of no others since those first four. meanwhile, arrows point in the traditional slowing southbound for 680 and 880 coming through the east bay. across that san mateo bridge, we have the build and toward the bay bridge also out of the maze we have that congestion. look, the east shore freeway close to the limit and the metering lights did turn on this week. may be the pattern we're starting to see. give t another week or so to sort out. meanwhile, at the bay bridge toll plaza, lighter volume

back here at home, google, more properly alphabet, will report earnings this afternoon. we'll talk to executives on the conference call. hope to hear something about their massive expansion plans in mountain view. shares in facebook just hit an all-time high after that company absolutely stunned investors with a fabulous earnings report. facebook making by our calculation $33 million a day in profits. on that conference call they talked about how they have more ads than they have space to put them. the fed did as expected, did not raise interest rates the next opportunity to do so comes at the regular meeting in september. we just got first time jobless claims a couple minutes ago. a data point the fed looks at showing slightly higher but a strong economy. if you're headed to work at net suite, you have a new owner. they bought net suite for $9 billion. the two companies have always been close. oracl oracle's founder is one of the net suite's founders.

it will be a few degrees lower as we go into the weekend but not by much. much cooler though along the coastline. and next week we're still talking about 90s in the forecast. and 60s in san francisco. as you head out now, this is what you're feeling. 65, the warmest temperature is in the livermore. cool is now in santa rosa at 50 degrees. winds coming in from the south. brings in that wildfire smoke, effort south bay and the east bay. winds are not that strong coming in at five to ten miles an hour. maybe 10 to 1 for parts of the east bay. and the valleys as well as some of the hilltops. but into the day tomorrow, more of the same. a light southerly wind. and it will be hot today reaching 98 degrees in los gatt los. pacifica, 66 degrees. 95 in santa rosa. 103 in walnut creek. a wide range in temperatures in the coastal ears to the tri-valley. so in the inland areas, that's where you want to head to the

pool. find someplace to cool off. so especially you're not running as much air conditioning because we're trying to conserve energy. it will be up to 106 degrees later on today. so a dip in the pool definitely ideal. just take a look at the -- make sure you put on a lot of sunscreen. it will be hot and hazy into the next several days. as this high pressure stays across the region it's slowly takes its time moving off to the east and our temperatures will slowly back down. we are looking at highs in the upper 70s today in san francisco. some upper 60s through next week. and that's where we will see the most cooling. meantime in the inland areas, in the valley, it will be up to 100 degrees today. and we'll drop it back to 93 for you for this weekend. let's head over to mike now, really focus on spots in pleasanton and san jose. >> that's right, kari. we had that unusual slowing in pleasant on the. the rest of the commute shows a typical pattern. in fact, just now starting to build. so that's a little bit late for a thursday. but again, summer months we tend to see that.

here we don't tend to see this, northbound 680 is jammed up. we talked about earlier there was a crash there. a spinout. one of the cars had a punctured fuel tank. small gas leak. sounds like that's been stopped up. a total of four vehicles on the shoulder and they all have flat tires as chp and other crews arrive, more of a distraction, more of a build. not unusual slowdown, unpredictable i guess the northbound side. meanwhile in san jose talksing at this as well. unusual. an issue for eastbound -- east capitol expressway in the westbound direction away from highway 101. we talked about an overnight vegetation fire near the golf course that will distract flow. not typically traveling in that direction for most of your commuters. but still, affects you getting over towards santa rosa as well. but the typical northbound commute is slowing for all of your directions including 87 and kicking in that crash 101 at oakland road still has activity

open this morning after a car hit and killed a person who was walking on the freeway. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: the fatal pedestrian accident took place around 4:00 a.m. right me with hind me here on 880 northbound near the oakland coliseum. according to chp the pedestrian was walking with the flow of traffic in the fast lane of the freeway and that's when the driver hit this pedestrian. the pedestrian was pronounced dead when crews showed up and it was the driver who called chp and called 911. now, i asked chp if this male pedestrian may have been a transient that made it on to the freeway. >> due to the clothing and the identification on the person, it did not appear to be a transient at the time. >> reporter: now, according to chp they say the driver was on his way home from the airport. and at this time it does not appear that that driver was under the influence you. in oakland, pete suratos, for
