california. right now an intense manhunt is under way for the suspect. >> tonight we've reached a milestone. the first time that a major party has nominated a woman for president. >> hillary clinton officially accepting the democratic party's nomination for president and sending a strong message about what she can do for america and what she says donald trump cannot. plus, thousands of people getting ready for some garlic mania. the gilroy garlic festival is kicking off this morning. it continues into the weekend. right now at 63 degrees in the tri-valley and 56 degrees in the peninsula we have some coastal fog. most of the inland areas are mostly clear. and a lot of sunshine still some poor air quality for parts of the east bay and tri-valley with highs hitting 100 degrees and 71 degrees today in san francisco. as we head back over to mike he has an update on that deadly crash in the south bay. >> i do want to show folks this video from the crash scene. just to show you the severity. overturned vehicle had five people inside. this is in sunnyvale and matilda avenue on rach to eastbound 237 where the car ended up. one person died. four other people in that car, minor injuries is what i've been told. my goodness, that tragedy. third morning as we look at your map that we've had a deadly crash to report. so be careful. getting back out to the maps. this crash was blocking the on-ramp to eastbound 237 at matilda avenue. the car went off the highway and ended up at the on-ramp.

clear no impact to the traffic for now but following that as well as the rest of the south bay, of course, folks heading down toward the gilroy garrick festival. the rest of your bay very light commute, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we are following some pretty intense breaking news out of the san diego this morning where an officer is dead and another seriously injured after gunman opened fire. it happened about 11:00 last night in the city's southcrest area. police are releasing a few details about what led up to the violence but they say it happened shortly after the officer's conducted a stop. we also know one suspect in that shooting is in custody. the police are still on the hunt for a second suspect and there's been a manhunt under way. the injured officer was rushed to a hospital and has undergone surgery. we'll also know hearing the officer is expected to survive. we'll be following this breaking news all morning and bring you updates as we get them. violence here in the bay area as well continuing a trend in san jose. now to developing news in san jose. a deadly late night shooting.

"today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is following that story for us. sharon, san jose pd is not releasing a lot of information about this shooting accept that one person was killed. what are you learning? >> reporter: that's right, sam. a lot of investigators out here still collecting evidence. you can see behind me in the last shot we were talking about they were doing a lot of activity behind that blue tarp. that's on the sidewalk there. they had their flashlights going on behind the blue tarp. turns out they just removed the body from the scene. that's what was behind the blue tarp. and so a lot of activity along here on willow street. police responded to a call last night around 10:00 on a report of a person shot. they discovered an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. investigators are still combing through the white mercedes. police are still looking into a motive and have not released any information on suspects. there have been no arrests so this shooter is still on the loose. and back here live as you mentioned, this is a 29th

live. she has that good samaritan to everything that. >> yes, that victim is safe and she can thank that good samaritan who stepped in and saved the day. we did speak by phone to 23-year-old and he said he was leaving his apartment heading to work when all this took place and according to san leandro police a 23-year-old woman was heading to work near washington street when a man jumped out and attempted to drag her into his car. that good samaritan we were just talking about saw this unfolding and stepped in. >> pulled her ankle. she was like -- almost completely in the vehicle. she was just -- we were running around his car. >> she could have ended up the next body dumped somewhere else. no way to know. >> reporter: a very close call there. and now want you dpis to look at this sketch of the suspect. he's described as a male, 25 to 40 years old, last seen wearing a collared shirt and black sweater with a white stripe

around the middle and black pants and black shoes. he was last seen driving a silver nissan ultima with tinted windows. if you have any information, contact san leandro pd. >> thank you so much, pete. it is 5:07. happening today the man accused of killing sierra lamar will be back in court ahead of his scheduled start of the trial. trial is supposed to begin on monday. today he is scheduled to appear in a san jose courtroom for a pretrial hearing. the judge is expected to hear motions on some of the evidence that may or may not be presented during the trial. 15-year-old sierra lamar disappeared in 2012 while walking on her way to school in morgan hill. her body has never been found. some sports news now. the giants are trying to get their mojo back after they lost 10 out of last 12 games. last night they beat the giants at at&t park. >> some help is on the way.

giants acquired all-star infielder eduardo nunez from the twins in exchange for a minor league pitcher. nunez will helped the banged up infield. he can also play the outfield. not bad. >> not just some flash in the pan, laura. speaking of, stuff in the pan. >> that's right. a lot of garlic going to be going on in the south bay this weekend. gilroy garlic festival kicking off. nothing says summer like the gilroy garlic festival. and of course baseball. >> baseball. they're both particular fabrics of our summer experience. more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event. there's the fire, there's the action. this after the champions of charity cookoff will take place. that's a competition between four teams of south bay first responders, all of them trying to win $3,000 for the charity of their choice. as usual, there's plenty of garlicky food. live cooking demonstrations and lots of family fun throughout the coast of a full weekend packed with garlic.

>> p.s., there's a lot of traffic going on down there, too. start early. they're going to have shuttle, i believe, too, from the park. >> try to pack the people in, a lot of interests, a lot of heat that's going to be out there this weekend. >> yeah. typically this is always such a hot weekend for the festival. >> i was there last year and it was unbearable, especially right there in the middle of the field with all that sunshine just beam down. just be prepared for that once again. as we start out this morning, it's in the mid 50s near the coastline and mid 60s for the inland areas. highs this afternoon once again will be very hot up to 96 degrees in morgan hill. and livermore 102 and 108 in fairfield. palo alto, 85 while san francisco will be at 71 degrees. we'll take a look ahead to the weekend and some activities going on. that's coming up. mike has a a new crash in sunol. >> a quick note about this garlic fest this year caltrain is running one garlic train heading down in through the area out of san jose, continuing down toward the area of gilroy.

so keep that in mind. check their website for the details. one special train there to reduce some of the traffic. not a lot of traffic right now but we'll go over toward the tri-valley where there is that one crash. southbound 680 right around the off-ramp. no lanes reported blocked. i don't see any slowing. that's our incident for the tri-valley. look over here, a live look out up to the dublin camera and you see westbound. no problems. you're expected volume here and eastbound traditional. give the warning that friday tends to be getaway through this area eastbound starts about 2:00 and then you will see things start to slow from dublin in towards livermore and altamont pass. coming up, speculation is over. conspiracy theories can stop for definitive answer on what flashed over the night sky this week.

we say, we'll fix it together. >> reporter: today clinton and tim kaine kick off their midwest bus tour in battleground pennsylvania. mike pence is back home in indiana, then ohio. donald trump campaigns today in colorado. trump actually says he watched the democrats and expect they will probably get a bump in the polls after this convention like he did. tracie potts, nbc news, philadelphia. >> 3 1/2 months away from the election. tracie, thank you. new criminal charges stemming from the water crisis in flint, michigan. back in april michigan's attorney general filed charges against three state and city workers he said played key roles in the crisis. he also promised more criminal charges would be coming. those charges are going to be outlined during a news conference scheduled for later this morning. the water crisis in flint started two years ago when corrosive water ate through the city's pipes causing lead to seep into its drinking water. a mexican drug lord convicted of killing an american

drug agent is being released from pri so. ernesto coreo kidnapped and tortured and killed him in 1985. now, 86 years old he has nine years remaining on a 40-year senten sentence. he will serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest. the drug lord was cofounder of the guadalajara cartel. pope francis met with several survivors of the auschwitz camp in poland. one by one the pope stopped, shook their hand and bent over to kiss each elderry survivor on both cheeks. pope francis also took time to speak with those survivors. he then carried a large white candle and placed it at the death wall where prisoners were executed. francis becomes the third pontiff to visit the place where nazis killed more than a million people, most of them jews. as evidence grows that the russians were ahind the hack of the democratic national committee, also seeing evidence

that information finally confirmed by the u.s. military. >> the rocket's red glare, there you see it. red hot is what we've been feeling lately in the temperature sglsz we're not going to let go of this heat just yet. so i guess we just might as well get used to it. try to manage throughout these next several days. as we get a live look outside now in san francisco, we start out with some low clouds in spots and we will see that clearing out as we go through the day. the bay bridge is all clear for now. the sand looking good. seeing fog rolling across the golden gate bridge. 55 degrees there heading up to 71 degrees. here's what to expect. the morning clouds and the fog will be clearing out with a nice breeze. another beautiful day in the city. this weekend it will be staying comfortable with morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. and next week we'll still have the 60s along the coastline and hot weather for the inland areas. and we do still have this "spare the air" alert day in effect mainly for the east bay where it

will be the most unhealthy. a little bit more on -- we're seeing the air quality improving for the south bay but still moderate and good for the peninsula in the north bay. the reason why we've had a slight shift in the wind direction coming in southwest, it will be breezy. but coming in from that monterrey fire we'll have the same thing again tomorrow. and it will be more of an onshooan shore flow that will help bring the temperatures down for the evening hours. a look at all the microclimates. morgan hill today up to 95 approximately palo alto, 85. san francisco, low 70s. 89 in san rafael. hayward, 80. and still in the triple digits in the tri-valley. if you are heading out to the garlic festival, it will be in the 90s, even upper 90s. hot and hazy, remember the sunscreen, the bottled waters and the mints. we'll talk about what else is going on. that's coming up a little bit later. mike is giving us an update now on that crash in palo alto. we're looking over here. as you see traffic flows well

except for i'm going to zoom in on the map. it doesn't show a whole lot on the sensors but the live camera does show what's going on southbound 101 from the university on-ramp. look at the flashing lights. made progress. looks like they still have two lanes blocked but they're moving some of the equipment over to the right. consider just half of your freeway open right now southbound and 101 bogs down. clearing by the time you get to oregon expressway. jump on south you're okay for the bay shore freeway and the south bay. talking about the south bay traffic flow. northbound is the morning commute. but this weekend starting today we're going to have all of these folks heading down toward christmas hill park. and also one cal tran, one a day goes down toward the area as well. check their website. a lot of crowds through this area. congestion 152 and 101. bay bridge toll plaza. no backup but more traffic flowing. even on a friday you often see the metering lights. we'll track it, guys, back to you. it is 5:22. coming up, take you to rio. a week to go before the games

hooks up to your smartphone. it stores and remember yours symptoms as they change and can notify doctors and teammates of your fever history. kinsa is offering the product for free to any athlete or family that's is headed to rio. as for the olympics it was a sight many athletes didn't want to see. gas leak and electrical problems in the olympic village. the problems have been caused by unhappy workers try to sabotage the massive compound. 400 rooms in the complex had to defect but repairs are being done. on a lighter note. last night a dress rehearsal of sorts lit up the sky above rio's most famous americana stadium. details of that ceremony are under wraps but volunteers say preparations are coming along very well. as for security, the total of 85,000 members of the armed forces, military, civil and federal police are in rio for the smu summer games. the latest on breaking news

you made it to friday. good morning. happy you're joining us today. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. you made to it friday, now you have to make it through friday just to get to the weekend. >> we're halfway there, right? hot weather this weekend. we're still in the thick of this and it looks like it does hang around for a few days. all of our microclimates we have spread anywhere from 50 degrees in the north bay to 62 degrees in the tri-valley. coastal fog in the peninsula and 57 with a high headed up to 85. still in the 90s for the north and the south bay. triple digits for the tri-valley. poor air quality there, too. and nice pleasant 71 degrees in san francisco. we'll talk about the weekend ahead but we still have now some b.a.r.t. delays? >> that's right. we go from minor overnight delays which we often have when pick up around the bay area to 20-minute delay. system wide reported.

"today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us. she's following the story. san jose police are not releasing a lot of details about the shooting except one person with was killed. >> reporter: that's right, laura. investigators were out here all morning and you can see right now that the white mercedes that was at the center of this investigation is now just about being towed away and about half hour ago we saw the body being taken away from the scene. police responded to a call last night around 10:00 on a report of a person shot. they discovered an adult male suffering from one gunshot wound.

both are accuse of attacking an armored car guard in windsor two weeks ago. the guard was shot multiple times and did not survive. both men miles away in calistoga. investigators say the suspects are also connected to two more crimes that happened in southern california. we're leaning more about what led up to arrest of an man accused of shooting an open police sergeant as she was sitting in her patrol car. police tracked the suspect down 70 miles away in stockton where they say the man barricaded himself inside a home before ultimately being arrested. police say that four children were inside the home during that standoff. a gun was also recovered inside. oakland police say they're still not clear on the motive but the suspect did make statements that may be in line with recent anti-police sentiment that's been expressed in national protests. >> the overall narrative that's going on nationally. >> even though trying times with our strained relationships with

the community and law enforcement throughout the country, the citizens of oakland have stepped up. >> that police officer was just sitting in her patrol suv after a car crash she had been in last saturday when someone came up and shot at her. the officer was not hit by the gunfire but she did suffer minor injuries in the crash. this is a stunning turn of events. the man once convicted of killing chandra levy will be released from prison. it was a crime that captivated the country 15 years ago. prosecutors say they are dropping all charges against ingman guandique. they convicted he om murdering levy. that verdict was overturned. sandra levy was from modesto working in d.c. as an intern. she was also romantically lichked to then congressman gary condit of modesto the. prosecutors hoped to retry guandique. yesterday's news stunned levy's mother. >> basically emotion that day very pell.

and that's why i've not been answering phone calls or anything from anywhere. i just -- it's kind of like puts you back to the level of grief that you originally had. >> gary condit's attorney released a statement that said in part, quote, the failure of authorities to bring formal closure to this tragedy after 15 years is very disappointing but in no way alters the fact that mr. condit was long ago completely exonerated by authorities. some hope at last of containing very stubborn flames as firefighters are making progress on the wildfire still burning in monterrey county. the soberanes fire is 15% contained. we are also learning that that fire has prompted the closure of six state parks along the central coast. at least through august 6th. the fire has now grown to more than 29,000 acres and 41 homes have been destroyed. those are the latest figures. cal fire has identified the bulldozer operator who died fighting the fire as robert reagan from fresno county.

so this evening at at&t park we'll have another game and it will be cool and breezy. first pitch will be at 67 degrees and then dropping back to 64. as high pressure continues across the region it still brings in that hot and stagnant air and it will be slowly moving off towards the south and west as we go into the rest of the weekend. and early next week. so our temperatures will stay in the 90s even as we go into the next several days. if you're looking for somewhere to go to enjoy the nice warm weather in sonoma county it will be in the low 80s. even mid 80s heading into the rest of the weekend. monterrey bay will be nice and cool with some upper 60s there. and santa cruz stays in the mid 70s for both saturday and sunday. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. mike has the tip for drivers out of palo alto. >> that's right. need to help these folks who are stuck here getting on to 101. look, this, folks, is 101 itself. jamming up just past the university avenue on-ramp. look, it's all jammed up as well

now to an investigative exclusive. how schools rely on campus police officers is about to change at over 30 schools. it's all the result of reporting by our investigative unit. >> our series over the course of the last year raised serious questions about why children are getting criminal records for what some describe as childish misbehavior. we explain how his reporting is impacting thousands of students. >> guys, good morning. we discovered that in the bay area most schools that pay police officers to regularly patrol campus don't have guidelines on when to involve police. over the last year we've shown you how that can leave children and teens with criminal records. now after our reporting the san jose police department is working to outline the roles of campus officers in a pilot program that will be unveiled during the upcoming school year. the change will impact over

city's pipes causing lead to seep into the drinking water supply. if you've been to lake tahoe recently and thought the water felt more bearable, you're right. lake tahoe's average surface temperature was the warmest ever recorded. at 53.3 degrees. that's according to a new report released yesterday by uc davis. scientists say the lake's water over the past four years has been warming at a pace 15 times its historic average. while they say the lake may be easier for visitors to swim in the warmer waters could threaten its clarity. resulting in the growth of more algae, silt and invasive species. high honor for the late san francisco supervisor harvey milk. not only came from a nef family but served as an officer during the 1950s. this morning the navy is naming a ship after milk. the vessel seen here provides support for other navy ships at sea. milk of course was assassinated in 1978 short by after becoming the first openly a gay

keeping it coastal might not be a bad idea this weekend. >> not bad at all. it will be hot for the inland areas. and then really cool along the coastline. pretty much the same weather we've had since last weekend. it's still continues into this weekend. so now it's 50 degrees in the north bay. we had low clouds, fog in san francisco. and 60 degrees now in the south bay with a high expected up to 97. 92 in the north bay and still some triple digits with poor air quality in the tri-valley. we'll talk about the weekend ahead and check out a couple of events that's coming up. nike has some delays for both roads and the rails. >> that's right. give the good news first. for b.a.r.t., the rails were having a ten-minute delay and continuing to recover. there was overnight track maintenance. that's not unusual but 20 minutes is longer than we expect there. clearing up. over here in the peninsula, the roads, this is the biggest issue right more. southbound 101 jammed up down from willow all of the way to just shy of embarcadero road.
