it continues into the weekend. right now at 63 degrees in the tri-valley and 56 degrees in the peninsula we have some coastal fog. most of the inland areas are mostly clear. and a lot of sunshine still some poor air quality for parts of the east bay and tri-valley with highs hitting 100 degrees and 71 degrees today in san francisco. as we head back over to mike he has an update on that deadly crash in the south bay. >> i do want to show folks this video from the crash scene. just to show you the severity. overturned vehicle had five people inside. this is in sunnyvale and matilda avenue on rach to eastbound 237 where the car ended up. one person died. four other people in that car, minor injuries is what i've been told. my goodness, that tragedy. third morning as we look at your map that we've had a deadly crash to report. so be careful. getting back out to the maps. this crash was blocking the on-ramp to eastbound 237 at matilda avenue. the car went off the highway and ended up at the on-ramp.

clear no impact to the traffic for now but following that as well as the rest of the south bay, of course, folks heading down toward the gilroy garrick festival. the rest of your bay very light commute, guys. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. we are following some pretty intense breaking news out of the san diego this morning where an officer is dead and another seriously injured after gunman opened fire. it happened about 11:00 last night in the city's southcrest area. police are releasing a few details about what led up to the violence but they say it happened shortly after the officer's conducted a stop. we also know one suspect in that shooting is in custody. the police are still on the hunt for a second suspect and there's been a manhunt under way. the injured officer was rushed to a hospital and has undergone surgery. we'll also know hearing the officer is expected to survive. we'll be following this breaking news all morning and bring you updates as we get them. violence here in the bay area as well continuing a trend in san jose. now to developing news in san jose. a deadly late night shooting.

"today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is following that story for us. sharon, san jose pd is not releasing a lot of information about this shooting accept that one person was killed. what are you learning? >> reporter: that's right, sam. a lot of investigators out here still collecting evidence. you can see behind me in the last shot we were talking about they were doing a lot of activity behind that blue tarp. that's on the sidewalk there. they had their flashlights going on behind the blue tarp. turns out they just removed the body from the scene. that's what was behind the blue tarp. and so a lot of activity along here on willow street. police responded to a call last night around 10:00 on a report of a person shot. they discovered an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. investigators are still combing through the white mercedes. police are still looking into a motive and have not released any information on suspects. there have been no arrests so this shooter is still on the loose. and back here live as you mentioned, this is a 29th

live. she has that good samaritan to everything that. >> yes, that victim is safe and she can thank that good samaritan who stepped in and saved the day. we did speak by phone to 23-year-old and he said he was leaving his apartment heading to work when all this took place and according to san leandro police a 23-year-old woman was heading to work near washington street when a man jumped out and attempted to drag her into his car. that good samaritan we were just talking about saw this unfolding and stepped in. >> pulled her ankle. she was like -- almost completely in the vehicle. she was just -- we were running around his car. >> she could have ended up the next body dumped somewhere else. no way to know. >> reporter: a very close call there. and now want you dpis to look at this sketch of the suspect. he's described as a male, 25 to 40 years old, last seen wearing a collared shirt and black sweater with a white stripe

around the middle and black pants and black shoes. he was last seen driving a silver nissan ultima with tinted windows. if you have any information, contact san leandro pd. >> thank you so much, pete. it is 5:07. happening today the man accused of killing sierra lamar will be back in court ahead of his scheduled start of the trial. trial is supposed to begin on monday. today he is scheduled to appear in a san jose courtroom for a pretrial hearing. the judge is expected to hear motions on some of the evidence that may or may not be presented during the trial. 15-year-old sierra lamar disappeared in 2012 while walking on her way to school in morgan hill. her body has never been found. some sports news now. the giants are trying to get their mojo back after they lost 10 out of last 12 games. last night they beat the giants at at&t park. >> some help is on the way.

giants acquired all-star infielder eduardo nunez from the twins in exchange for a minor league pitcher. nunez will helped the banged up infield. he can also play the outfield. not bad. >> not just some flash in the pan, laura. speaking of, stuff in the pan. >> that's right. a lot of garlic going to be going on in the south bay this weekend. gilroy garlic festival kicking off. nothing says summer like the gilroy garlic festival. and of course baseball. >> baseball. they're both particular fabrics of our summer experience. more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the three-day event. there's the fire, there's the action. this after the champions of charity cookoff will take place. that's a competition between four teams of south bay first responders, all of them trying to win $3,000 for the charity of their choice. as usual, there's plenty of garlicky food. live cooking demonstrations and lots of family fun throughout the coast of a full weekend packed with garlic.

will be the most unhealthy. a little bit more on -- we're seeing the air quality improving for the south bay but still moderate and good for the peninsula in the north bay. the reason why we've had a slight shift in the wind direction coming in southwest, it will be breezy. but coming in from that monterrey fire we'll have the same thing again tomorrow. and it will be more of an onshooan shore flow that will help bring the temperatures down for the evening hours. a look at all the microclimates. morgan hill today up to 95 approximately palo alto, 85. san francisco, low 70s. 89 in san rafael. hayward, 80. and still in the triple digits in the tri-valley. if you are heading out to the garlic festival, it will be in the 90s, even upper 90s. hot and hazy, remember the sunscreen, the bottled waters and the mints. we'll talk about what else is going on. that's coming up a little bit later. mike is giving us an update now on that crash in palo alto. we're looking over here. as you see traffic flows well

right, and stepped? >> you know, pulled her ankle off. she was like -- almost completely in the vehicle. she was just facing me and we were running around his car. when someone is in danger you got to step up. do anything you can to, you know, judiffuse the situation. >> boy did he step up and do the right thing. take a good look of the sketch of the suspect. described as a male, 25 to 40 years old. last seen wearing a collared shirt and black sweater and white stripe around the middle. black pants and black shoes. driving a silver nissan ultima with tinted windows. if you have any information on this contact san leandro pd. >> just brave for that man to step in. happening today, two men acruised of shooting a armored car guard during a robbery are expected in court. surge jay and ivan morales will appear in court there morning.

both are accuse of attacking an armored car guard in windsor two weeks ago. the guard was shot multiple times and did not survive. both men miles away in calistoga. investigators say the suspects are also connected to two more crimes that happened in southern california. we're leaning more about what led up to arrest of an man accused of shooting an open police sergeant as she was sitting in her patrol car. police tracked the suspect down 70 miles away in stockton where they say the man barricaded himself inside a home before ultimately being arrested. police say that four children were inside the home during that standoff. a gun was also recovered inside. oakland police say they're still not clear on the motive but the suspect did make statements that may be in line with recent anti-police sentiment that's been expressed in national protests. >> the overall narrative that's going on nationally. >> even though trying times with our strained relationships with

the community and law enforcement throughout the country, the citizens of oakland have stepped up. >> that police officer was just sitting in her patrol suv after a car crash she had been in last saturday when someone came up and shot at her. the officer was not hit by the gunfire but she did suffer minor injuries in the crash. this is a stunning turn of events. the man once convicted of killing chandra levy will be released from prison. it was a crime that captivated the country 15 years ago. prosecutors say they are dropping all charges against ingman guandique. they convicted he om murdering levy. that verdict was overturned. sandra levy was from modesto working in d.c. as an intern. she was also romantically lichked to then congressman gary condit of modesto the. prosecutors hoped to retry guandique. yesterday's news stunned levy's mother. >> basically emotion that day very pell.

and that's why i've not been answering phone calls or anything from anywhere. i just -- it's kind of like puts you back to the level of grief that you originally had. >> gary condit's attorney released a statement that said in part, quote, the failure of authorities to bring formal closure to this tragedy after 15 years is very disappointing but in no way alters the fact that mr. condit was long ago completely exonerated by authorities. some hope at last of containing very stubborn flames as firefighters are making progress on the wildfire still burning in monterrey county. the soberanes fire is 15% contained. we are also learning that that fire has prompted the closure of six state parks along the central coast. at least through august 6th. the fire has now grown to more than 29,000 acres and 41 homes have been destroyed. those are the latest figures. cal fire has identified the bulldozer operator who died fighting the fire as robert reagan from fresno county.

i want to check the forecast root now with kari as we approach now our weekend finally. >> yes we will still have poor air quality in spots. because of the wildfire in the east bay, it will be moderate in the south bay and good in the peninsula and north bay. but the "spare the air" alert issued once again as the winds come in from the southwest and this will bring in more of that low quality air into the east bay. and it does pick up later on this evening. more of an onshore flow kicks in tomorrow evening and that will help cool us off but still hot throughout the day. looking at the high temperatures this afternoon. reaching 96 degrees in morgan hill. still the triple digits for the tri-valley as well as fairfield. while oakland and san francisco will be in the 70s. we'll talk about that weekend forecast coming up. mike has an update on that crash in the peninsula. >> delays 101 as well as b.a.r.t. system we still have 20-minute delays reported system wide. overnight track maintenance.

all right. now to some bad news. a startling report on american gd prk out just moments ago showed much less growth than expected. much less. 1.2% versus 2.6% expected. this is brand new data. we're still trying to make sense of it. but even as we try to pick apart the report we can say one thing. it's evidence there are two economies. one here in northern cal that's red hot, other parts of america may be just barely warm. that's certainly reflected in our politics. one party pointing to opportunity and the economy, the other pointing out not everybody has been included. strangely, flip-flopped, this year. here's one thing we can agree on, guys, and that's love. tinder says 57% of tinder uses in philadelphia this past week were not from philadelphia. 82% of the people using tinder included last week were visitors to cleveland which we can assume means that those are the delegates themselves. now, we don't have numbers on

so this evening at at&t park we'll have another game and it will be cool and breezy. first pitch will be at 67 degrees and then dropping back to 64. as high pressure continues across the region it still brings in that hot and stagnant air and it will be slowly moving off towards the south and west as we go into the rest of the weekend. and early next week. so our temperatures will stay in the 90s even as we go into the next several days. if you're looking for somewhere to go to enjoy the nice warm weather in sonoma county it will be in the low 80s. even mid 80s heading into the rest of the weekend. monterrey bay will be nice and cool with some upper 60s there. and santa cruz stays in the mid 70s for both saturday and sunday. i'll have another look at the forecast coming up. mike has the tip for drivers out of palo alto. >> that's right. need to help these folks who are stuck here getting on to 101. look, this, folks, is 101 itself. jamming up just past the university avenue on-ramp. look, it's all jammed up as well

now to an investigative exclusive. how schools rely on campus police officers is about to change at over 30 schools. it's all the result of reporting by our investigative unit. >> our series over the course of the last year raised serious questions about why children are getting criminal records for what some describe as childish misbehavior. we explain how his reporting is impacting thousands of students. >> guys, good morning. we discovered that in the bay area most schools that pay police officers to regularly patrol campus don't have guidelines on when to involve police. over the last year we've shown you how that can leave children and teens with criminal records. now after our reporting the san jose police department is working to outline the roles of campus officers in a pilot program that will be unveiled during the upcoming school year. the change will impact over

city's pipes causing lead to seep into the drinking water supply. if you've been to lake tahoe recently and thought the water felt more bearable, you're right. lake tahoe's average surface temperature was the warmest ever recorded. at 53.3 degrees. that's according to a new report released yesterday by uc davis. scientists say the lake's water over the past four years has been warming at a pace 15 times its historic average. while they say the lake may be easier for visitors to swim in the warmer waters could threaten its clarity. resulting in the growth of more algae, silt and invasive species. high honor for the late san francisco supervisor harvey milk. not only came from a nef family but served as an officer during the 1950s. this morning the navy is naming a ship after milk. the vessel seen here provides support for other navy ships at sea. milk of course was assassinated in 1978 short by after becoming the first openly a gay
